the advice that is usually given is - increase distance and then speed. in fact, if you work on your distance, you might find that increasing speed comes easier. as the other posters have said, be careful about overdoing it. pain will follow. if you just started running and you're doing 6mph comfortably for 10 minutes, then you're doing well! |

the past 3 winters i have transitioned to indoor treadmill running when real winter set in -- because of the cold and the dark (during the week i can't run during normal daylight hours). i am determined this winter to stay outside. we'll see how far i make it. :) nowadays i'm only running 3 days a week, and i won't have any excuses (except that it will be cooooollld). |

turkey chili, chicken tortilla (although, i don't really want a lot of 'tortilla' in this soup), and hearty tomato are at the top of my favs.

i used to weigh daily. now i weigh twice a week - monday morning and friday morning. i get to see how my weekend habits impact my weight, as well as how capable i am of recovering during the week (or perhaps getting worse). i've been doing this for about 4 months or so, and it's an interesting trend. |

Original Post by marsha_t: i can relate. when you go a large portion of your life feeling 'bigger' than those around you, it takes awhile for your brain to register that you finally accomplished your goal. and, while it's up to you to decide how you dress and wear your hair, i hope you won't ditch the cooler (others may say 'younger') style. we may be 30, but that just means we're old enough to know what's best for us, rather than abiding by rules that others create for us. layered tanks are fun... :) |

| eating when you're bored is a sign that you tie your eating habits to your emotions. force yourself to wait for 10 or 15 minutes when you feel a craving. sometimes that helps you fight it off. also, now that you know you're doing this, plan a better snack for yourself at this time of day than what you're having now (fruit instead of junk). it just takes time to get over habits like this. you're doing well - hang in there! | |||

i haven't run any races, so i'll leave guidance on that subject to another runner out there (it's a goal of mine, though!). i can tell you that the grade on the road you are running is probably making a bigger difference than what you'd think. you might have the treadmill's grade set at 0 or 1, while the road may be 2 or even higher. it may look flat, but that doesn't mean it's a 0. try running on a treadmill with the grade set at 2 - that's what i do, and i think it helps transition from treadmill to outdoors. plus it helps my endurance. good luck in meeting your goal! |

i think that the behaviors behind splurging $$ stem from the same parts of us that cause us to splurge on food. i even read somewhere that when people diet they tend to spend more $. i know it's been true for me. i've been living a healthier life now for a year and a half, but i've spent way more $ than i should have. i think we can only concentrate on changing one part of our life at a time, and if we feel restricted in one aspect, we over-compensate in another. good luck! no advice from me, because i'm not a good role model in this area! |

lol, schnooder! i get the same thing! i've been told, 'good gracious, eat a biscuit or something'. he was a friend, so i forgave him, but...come on! as for the pretty face comments, i think it's all in the tone. said with emphasis on the right words, it could definitely sound like a back-handed compliment. of course, i'm sure there are times when people say it and it's an innocent compliment. |

maggieann makes some interesting points. it is quite the experiment to lose weight and sit back and watch how differently you are treated by both sexes (for better or for worse). also, sarah and catherinerich rightly pointed to society's norms. the expectation is out there everywhere. plus, women can't help but compare themselves to each other. we develop this skill very early in life and by the time we're teens, it's deeply ingrained. |

| ohlala - people hate to see other people succeed at anything they have failed or fear they may fail. you're successful, so you're a target. and people love to say 'i knew it' or 'i told you so'. sounds like you know to brush it off... :) | |||

ser25 - remember, everyone has their own opinion of everything. if it's not your weight, it would be something else. do you get a lot of feedback about your weight? i find that the first couple of times i got a 'negative' comment, i was in shock and defensive. now it's starting to roll off my back a little more. and you're right, it's always those people who should be taking a serious look at themselves that are first to offer an opinion. i've received a few of the 'you're losing too much weight, you need to gain some back' comments. i just got some over the holidays from family members. they're just used to seeing me one way, and have to adjust to seeing me another. i just laughed it off. i mean, the people who were saying those things about me are rail thin! good for you that you're watching your bmi and wanting to stay within a healthy range! take his opinion for the 2 cents its worth and brush it off. and don't worry, behind him are lots of others who are waiting to tell you what they think... |

| Weight Loss | Food Entries on Logs - Editing them? | Jan 06 2008 23:56 (UTC) |

hi, all. while we're talking about tagged items, is there a way to add a tagged item when you're in the tagged item section? i always have to go out to food browser, find it or create it, and then tag it. then if i want to add another, it's wash, rinse, repeat. didn't know if i was missing a link on the page somewhere... i'm new to this site, so i'm adding everything into my tagged list now and this seems to take the long-way around. (also wish the food browser screen had a search menu when you first open it, instead of having to go into a category and then search). oh well, i'm just happy that i have such a great tool to log what i eat now! |

i would support a friend who lost a lot of weight and wanted to do this - i would just want them to get a good dr and seriously look into it before they went through with it. me, personally, i'm not sure. i think i would have to give it some time just to see what changes my body would do on its own (i hate going to the dr). but i admit, i've only lost about 35 pounds and there are times when i would love to 'erase' some areas and start anew. like you said - i worked hard for it! |

hotpink - my sessions are usually 3 to 4 miles. how much are you running? december was a rough month for me. i like to run outside and i usually hit a wall of adjustment when i go from running outdoors to running on the treadmill. plus, i've had a couple of 'bugs' that made it hard to run. i saw a post earlier that someone was looking to run a 1/2 marathon this year - was that you? i would love to run a 5k or larger race, but i haven't worked up the nerve yet. i have much respect for all those out there who do the 1/2 and full marathons! congrats on your weight loss! you sound just like me 2 years ago. i was in the mid to upper 140's (i hated the scale, so i don't really know what i weighed when i started). at one point i wanted to be 135...then 130...then 120. my goal just kept dropping with my weight. its doable, just keep it one day at a time and be proud of your successes! |

used to do this several times a day, but i got a little obsessed with it, so i've cut back. now that i'm on this site, i will be logging my weight daily, but i'll try to only do it once a day. i try not to obsess too much over the numbers! (try) |

sarah- i've had a hard time through december. i've been sick (recovering from a 'bug' just this week) and so busy. i've probably averaged running twice a week throughout the last month. by the grace of god i maintained my weight through the holidays, but i am eager to get back on track. i usually run a few miles a day. congrats on losing the 15 pounds! don't brush that off, it's a great accomplishment, and it's a third of what you want to lose. stay with it! i think if you find time to exercise regularly, you'll start to see a difference. when i started running, it took about 2 months for me to see any real differences on the scale (i didn't change my eating habits that much at first), but i saw the difference in how my clothes fit me and how i felt. that was enough to keep me going. |

| i can't run with very much on my stomach, so i prefer to eat after i run. plus, i've read lots that says you should re-fuel after you run to replenish your body. i know others who eat before they run, they are just very choosy about what they eat. if you feel that you must eat, try healthy lite snacks like yogurt or a half a bagel or maybe kashi cereal. i don't believe i am actually hurting my body by running without eating - that's based on how my body feels when i'm doing it. | |||
| Weight Loss | Loose skin after weight loss... | Jan 05 2008 17:52 (UTC) |

lose40, jim, and justlaura have done a good job of giving guidance - i just want to add that this can happen at any amount of weight loss, not just those who lose over 50 or 75 pounds. from what i've read, slow weight loss is the best way to prevent it. also, don't be discouraged if you try all methods and you still see the loose skin immediately. i read that a lot of cosmetic surgeons encourage their patients who are looking to remove loose skin to wait a full year after weight loss before they try the surgical option. this is because your skin can tighten up after you've lost the weight, it just takes time. (i am not encouraging cosmetic surgery after rapid or considerable weight loss - just sharing some information that i read that supports the fact that the entire weight loss process and its aftermath just takes time to equalize---and we're usually too impatient to wait for it to work its course!) |

hi, all. i'm glad to see this thread. i'm a newbie to this site...but not weight loss. i barely meet the age requirements (you can throw me out later this year when i enter the land of 30-somethings). over the past year and a half i met weight goals that i once thought were impossible. i'm 5'4'' and this morning weighed 116. i owe it all to running. i was on and off the exercise/diet band wagon for about 4 years (well, really my whole life), and one day i just decided that i was going to take a little time each day for myself. i mean, really, what else was i doing?? i've had bad days, bad weeks, and bad months, but i just would remember how good it is to see and feel the results of exercise, and i would get started all over again. it took me about a year to lose 35 pounds, but i did it and now i've maintained it for 6 months! i won't go back to my former body for anything. this year will be about healthy eating (my food choices are my biggest weakness) and toning my body. looking forward to giving support to all of you in your healthy endeavors, and getting a little support every now and then when i hit a rough spot! |

hello, megain44. i am in my late 20's, and my goal this year is to maintain my current weight and learn to eat healthier. i'm 5'4'' and around 120lbs. i've done weight watchers, too, and i boomeranged just like you. the only thing that has worked for me was running. i lost about 35 lbs very slowly - over about a year. but the daily running has kept it off so far. not sure if i should be in your group, because i'm not looking to lose, but wanted to wish you the best just the same. good luck! |
