Karey- Hope your feeling better!

Yesterday I took a Jujitzu class for the first time. My gym has just started offering mixed marshal arts. It was pretty cool! I got to toss this girl around like a rag doll! lol. I think I'm gonna like this. ;) I also did 45 minutes on the elyptical, so had a good workout. My diet is really good right now too. I have been really successful in staying away from the processed carbs and sticking with plenty of lean protein and high fiber whole grains, fruits, veges, and beans. My weight is starting to come back down again, although slowly.

I am definately with you Soraya on not overindulging over Thanksgiving! I am headed to PA to visit family and friends for the week and I already told them NOT to worry about having all my favorite foods waiting for me, like they usually do. My sister almost always gets me my favorite pizza with mushrooms and extra sauce the first night I am there and I eat 3 pieces that night (with lots of wine) and 2 for breakfast the next morning (with coffee). It is soo good! But, not this year... :( I plan to take it easy and focus on moderation. Last time I went to PA I litterally came back 8 pounds heavier and have not lost it all since (that was in August). It's so not worth it! I am going to drink a little wine and cook and enjoy my time relaxing and not thinking about work.

Tomorrow Brock and I are planning to do 10 miles on the trails. It's going to be a little on the cold side, but hopefully no rain. The rest of my weekend will be spent packing and getting my animals and house, etc. ready for me to be away for a week. It's really hard for me to leave my dogs for that long...I worry about something happening to them. But I know Brock will take good care of them for me. :)

What are everyones plans for Thanksgiving?

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Karey- Sorry you're still feeling crappy! I agree with the Tamaflu, also rest and herbal tea.  Soraya- Of course, it is most likely a viral infection, so antibiotics would not do anything. Antibiotics are for treating bacterial infections, not viruses.Feel better soon!

Soraya- OMG girl, I am supposed to be getting a call from my ex, Kelly, tonight...I had a weak moment this weekend and texted him and asked him if he wanted to talk and he said he would call me tonight. Ugh! I don't know what I was thinking. I am sure we will not get back together, so why am I stirring things up? I'll let you know what happens if we do talk...Drama!

Sarah- Welcome back! So sorry about your miscarriage. Best of luck to you and your husband for a safe and healthy pregnancy in the near future. ;)

Megs- I finally made it back to the gym today too! I have been mostly just running outside, but now that it's dark at 4:30 I have no choice but to hit the old gym. It's a good thing that your stomach has shrunk and you get full faster. I know how you feel about wanting the weight to come off quickly, but Soraya and I can definately relate to how you feel. We have very similar diet "personalities". We will lose a couple of pounds after weeks of hard work and then stick there for weeks, only to end up getting discouraged. But, hang in there! It will happen!

Stephanie- Stick with the New Rules thing. I think it's a great workout. You may need to tweak the calories to meet your needs a little. The recommendations made are just generalities and, of course, everyone is a little different. Just keep monitoring your weight and if you continue not to lose over the next couple of weeks you may need to adjust it a little. I think Karey had some good success with New Rules.

wtf?? lol If i could binge on apples i'd be thrilled!!! lol

Apple are really healthy, I think they even have negative calories(it takes more calories to digest the apple than are actually in the apple) so you may even be losing weight!!!

Nope...Wishful thinking. The average sized apple has about 100 cals. There is nothing "negative" about the energy in an apple. Believe me, I wish there was! ;)

Girls!!! I'm back!! Finally got my home computer up and running again!!

Karey- Glad you had some fun in Vegas, but I can understand you liking SanFran better...So do I! Vegas does have some of the best restaurants in the country, but I am not a gambler and the crowds got to me a little after a while. Sorry you're not feeling well.

Soraya- I'm right with ya on the not working out for a few days...I did run the trails on Sat by myself, but didnt do anything sunday or today since I had to go pick up my computer after work.

I feel out of the loop a little with all the new people...Forgive me! I will try my best to catch up and to be able to coherently answer everyone personally.

Hey Girls!! Still have not gotten my home computer fixed...so only can write a little bit on my work computer. :(

I've sort of been taking a little "mental health" break this week. Haven't worked out for the past 2 days (since Sunday). Have been eating way too much as well. Today i got my diet back on track...Yeah! But, i have absolutely no motivation to go to the gym. All I want to do is trail running and now that it gets dark at 5pm I can only do that on the weekends. I need to find some new motivation to get back into the gym for the winter. Last winter we did p90x and that kept me very focussed. Maybe I can talk Brock (my workout partner) into starting another round of that.

Hope Karey is having an awesome time in Vegas Baby!!

It's Friday!! Woohoo! I'm still at work, of course, and still have no home computer, of course... But, the weather is absolutely spectacular right now here in AL and Brock (my workout partner) and I are planning to do a 10 mile trail run tomorrow and Sunday at the state park. For me, there is no better way to do interval training than trail running/hiking. i never get bored and it doesn't hurt my lower back and knees the way road running does.

Soraya- It was nice to talk and catch up with you last night on all the recent drama! lol.

Wish I had more time to post to respond to all the new girls individually! Megs, Lossfast, danielle, tenderleigh, Bee... Did I miss anyone?? ;) So glad the group is growing again! But....Karey! Where are ya girl? and Cherry??

Anywho... For the new people, my name is Gina, I am a reg. dietitian and I am also a confessed food-a-holic!! I love to cook food, study food, eat food, etc, etc...It's not only my job, but my passion. I am really into natural, whole and organic foods, but, I actually have literally NO food dislikes...so I will generally eat whatever is put in front of me, which sometimes gets me in trouble with trying to maintain my weight.  I am a bit of a fitness fanatic at times, but generally because I can't restrict my intake enough consistently in order to maintain my weight without it. I'm currently 5'5" and about 130# give or take a few any given day. :) My goal is to lose some body fat and to maintain my weight consistently in the 120's...Unfortunately, my bodies set-point is between 130-135#, so it's a constant battle for me.

Hope everyone has a great and healthy weekend! I probably will not be able to post much if any since I don't have my home computer.

Hey Girlies!!! Listen, I'm totoally STILL HERE, I have just still not been able to get my computer fixed and have litterally NO free time at work to post! :(

I'm doing well. Diet is ok. Eating healthy, but nowhere near my goal wt for my PA thxgiving trip! Brock and I are doing a 6 mile run at the lake tonight! Didn't workout last night bc friend came over to try to fix computer...unsuccessfully...He says I will probably have to completely "nuke" it and start over. Sucks! I'm gonna lose everything I have on it...pics, music, files, etc. Might have to actually upgrade and by a new computer. We'll see. I don't have the $ to do that now, but I am trying to sell my truck so if that happens things will be a little better.

Karey, Soraya...Love you girls! xoxo

To all the new girls that are joining this week...WELCOME!!! ;)

I promise I am keeping up with reading, just haven't been able to respond much.

Well, girls, it's Monday... I made it through my 1st weekend dateless in a while. :) I went to Birmingham and went out with my friend Tammi for Halloween. Some of the costumes were incredible! I will post a couple of the pics I have on my profile. There were these guys dressed like Kiss members and I swear so many people were convinced they were the real guys! Actually, Kiss was playing in Birmingham last week, so who knows? They were being totally mobbed by people so much that they had to leave. Weird...

Karey-  Oh! When I read about you not making close girl friends easily, all I could think was, that's totally me too! I have a few close friends that I've had for years, but, in general I have never been part of a "clique" or group of girl friends. I feel like people often don't "get" me either. I am even more sure we would get along great now. ;) Sounds like you are fairly close to your sister, like i am with mine, but she lives far from you, like mine. My best friend in the whole world lives in PA...I miss her alot some times. I think you are a very genuine, unique person and are not willing to "act" or "be" what others may want/expect, just to have lots of "friends" (hope that makes sense) Anyway, sometimes you can meet friends by joining things outside of the home, like a gym or exercise group to meet like-minded people. Glad you and hubby had a good weekend shopping and eating out! Sounds like fun! I think having him hide the candy corn was a great idea too. Out of sight out of mind. BTW, thanks so much for saying all those nice things about me...I consider you a friend even though we have never met. ;)

Soraya- How was the weekend at work? Are you almost done working there? Being is broke sucks! Why can't we all just be independantly wealthy?? Seems like we work so hard and get nowhere most of the time. I am trying to figure out where I can cut back on my expenses to take some of my finacial stress off. Think I'm definately gonna have to try to sell one of my horses and my truck. :( Sucks, but those are the only things I have that are worth more than I owe right now. And, you are right about me focussing more on career things now instead of the relationship stuff. I know that's what I need to do, but the dating is such a good distraction from the stressful career stuff! lol. I can't even get back on match to find another date since my computer is STILL screwed up! My friend has rescheduled for Wed. night to try to fix it. If he can't then I'm gonna take it to a computer repair shop. I need it back!

Hi girls. My computer is still not fixed. My friend that was going to try to fix it ended up canceling at the last minute yesterday. :(

I'm fighting depression and an urge to isolate...Kieran called and ended things between us last night. Why? I don't know. I didn't ask. What's the point? He just said he has thought about it and although "we have alot of good things between us", he realized that it's not what he wants long term. I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering he has NEVER had a long term relationship ever. I guess I just really sorta liked him and had a good time with him and thought we had a pretty strong connection developing...Guess I'm back to just me and my babies (animals) again. I am sad and feel sort of defeated. Of course, you know me, last night began a binge cycle. On top of that, my tires on my car went bad (all 4 were shot) and it was $500 for 4 new ones today. I didn't have the $ and ended up having to borrow it from my mom. I'm tired of being broke.  Brock is away for the weekend visiting his sister at college.

I'm supposed to go top Birmingham tomorrow night to go to a Halloween party with my friend, Tammi. I will go bc I told her I would, but I really don't want to go anywhere.

Food today- (B) 2 scram eggs, 1c grits, 1/2c fiber one, coffee. (L) veg. salad with balsamic vinegar, sunflower seeds, black beans and dried cranberries, grilled chicken with tomato sauce. (L #2) 100 cal yogurt, 2 cups honeydew, 1/2c chicken salad, 6 crackers (S) Beef/cheese raviolli with tomato sauce, 1c corn. It's only 6:20p and I have eaten all my cals for the day and then some...and DO NOT want to workout tonight. Yesterday I probably ate like 3000 cals (most after 5pm). It started when I gave blood and they gave mea plastic pumpkin filled with "fun size" packs of M&M's...I ate 6 packs before I gave the whole thing away to one of the nursing stations.

Sorry I'm so focussed on me today...I'm sorta getting sick of myself. Yuck! I feel fat and squishy, like I've never worked out a day in my life. lol.

Soraya- Hope your daughter is feeling better and you too!

Karey- I am super, super impressed with the pull-up! I can't do one at all. And I don't understand why bc I got up to being able to do 48 push ups with out stopping by the end of p90x and still couldn't do one stupid full pull up! Brock started out being able to do 3 pull ups at the beginning of p90 and got up to 9 by the end! Good for you girl! Superstar Karey!!! You rock!!! BTW, Soraya says you and I have the same voice on the phone and say alot of the same things. lol. I'll bet the 3 of us would have so much fun hangin out together. It's too bad we are at 3 different corners of the country.

Happy Candy Corn Day!!!! Have fun whatever you all do this weekend. Sorry you have to work Soraya!

Foods if gum says it contains 2 g. of "sugar alcohol" does that mean you log it as alcohol? Oct 30 2009
15:22 (UTC)

No. You do not log "sugar alcohol" as "alcohol" on cc. As gijane said, sugar alcohols are a form of artificial sweetener, but they are in no way the same thing as " ethanol" which is the alcolhol in alcoholic beverages.

Also, do not log the gum at all. "Vitamin" gum is just a marketing thing...it will not provide an appreciable amount of nutrition. Just chew it and forget it...

Happy National Candy Corn Day!!! lol.

Hey Girls!!! My computer is STILL not fixed but my friend is coming over again tonight to try to fix it, so keep fingers crossed!

Hope everyone is doing well...I'm good. :) Brock and I went trail running yesterday. The diet is pretty good, although not currently on the weight loss trend I was hoping for. Current weight 130#...

Soraya- Eggplant parmesan is my specialty! The key to good eggplant is to salt the slices and press it between papertowels for about 30 min to draw out the moisture and bitterness. I will usually lay the slices out on a couple of paper towels on a cutting board and place more papertowels on top and another cutting board on top for weight. If you want to cut down on the salt you can rinse it and pat it dry after before you cook it.

Gotta go give blood at our hospital blood drive! xoxox

Girls!!! Hey! OMG, I haven't been able to post since Oct 22 and there has been like 25 posts since my last one...

My computer at home is completely hosed with a virus call "windows police pro"...it sucks! I can't use the computer at all! My friend has been trying to fix it when he has time, but hasn't been able to yet. I am posting from my work computer, which I don't think I'm allowed to do really so I just have a minute!

Wanted to say "hi" and let you all know I have been reading your posts daily!

Soraya- Ummm...I seem to remember telling you something to the effect of "you need to go easy on yourself and you have to love yourself and have confidence in yourself"... ;) I'm glad others are telling you too! You are an amazing person, you just don't always realize it. xo! And Karey is soo right, confidence IS sexy! ;) We need to talk and catch up! give me a call tonight if you are not at work and have time.

Karey!! I saw that tea at the Publix on Sat. and almost bought it, but then i got some organic ginger tea instead. Is it good?

Cassie- Welcome!!

Wish I had more time to catch up! I'll write more tomorrow! xoxo! Gi

K- Your calories and carbohydrates look good, but you do seem to be lacking some in protein and healthy fats. Try adding in things like, beans/legumes, nuts/nut butters, eggs/egg whites, lean meat/fish/chicken, Greek yogurt, soy products (tofu, edammame, soy nuts), oils (olive, canola, peanut), avocado. Also, to make room for the cals in those foods, cut back on the unhealthy fats found in things like: butter, mayo, dairy. (I saw you had 300 cals listed from butter). What type of anemia do you have (iron deficiency, B12 def.)? If you are clinically anemic than you should be replacing the iron or B12 via supplements as prescribed by your doc. What I mean to say is, anemia should be a relatively temporary thing for a normal, healthy young girl like yourself as it is easily treated. When is the last time you had your blood drawn for "anemia profile"? If this has not been done in the past year, ask your doc for it. ....Oh, if I seem to have alot of "opinions" about food and nutrition, it's because I am a Registered Dietitian.

Soraya- Stupid Gummy Bears! lol. How did work go last night? Did you bring your dinner with you? Did you workout yesterday? I ran the 5 mile trail at state park with Brock, even though my horse kicked me in the knee the night before and it was killing me. But, I couldn't miss a beautiful day to run the trails! i don't know how many more i will get this year. When is the fall time change? My weight is back down 3 lbs. as of today. wootwoot (as Karey would say). Finally got that water weight off again.

Gotta go there is a patient nocking on my office door... :0

Weight Loss Diet and Amount of Fat Oct 21 2009
20:11 (UTC)

Actually, these are the current guidelines with regard to fat in the average American's diet:

Current dietary guidelines, including those of the US government [Dietary Guidelines (USDA/DHHS, 2005), Dietary Reference Intakes [reference DRI macronutrient book], National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP, 2001)], American Heart Association (AHA, 2206), American Diabetes Association (2006) and the American Cancer Society (2006), are all relatively consistent with respect to dietary fat. The emphasis is generally on encouraging the consumption of diets moderate in total fat (25% to 35% of calories) and low in saturated (<7% of calories) and trans fatty acids (<1% of calories), with the balance provided by unsaturated fat, either monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. The actual recommendations among organizations differ slightly, largely dictated by their intended goals. In all cases the guidelines/recommendations couple the dietary advice with that for physical activity, with the intent to encourage achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight.

The Lounge Looking for an answer... Does anyone know why this is...? Oct 21 2009
03:57 (UTC)

I can answer that for you! :)

Yes, there are 9 cals per gram of fat, 4 cals per gram of carb and pro. You do need to subtract the grams of fiber from your total carbs in order to calculate the cals. So, just subtract 43 from 134... Fiber does not breakdown into simple sugar and therefore does not provide food energy (ie: cals)

K- Welcome to our group! Sounds like you will fit right in with us! I think your new w/o program sounds great. I love the idea of doing several different classes at the gym. That way your body doesn't get used to one thing and you will continue to work different muscles and gain benefit. I agree with the other girls that 1300 cals may be a little difficult to maintain long term. How do you feel eating this amount? Do you feel like it gives you enough energy for your workouts?

Soraya- I know you and Karey are right about the water weight. I am working on cutting back on my sodium intake, which is one of my major issues...I am a saltaholic! I think I tend to replace sugar in my diet with salt to get the taste satisfaction. Today, I did a 5 mile trail run and my diet was very clean. Came in just under 1400 cals for the day and kept the salt in check too! Yay me! I'm hoping I'll see some change by tomorrow. As for 35 miles equalling 1 pound of fat? Well, if you burn 3500 cals more than you need to maintain by doing 35 miles, than, yes it would by 1 pound loss! So, heres to hoping I burned more than I ate! lol. Sounds like you are doing great too! You and I both have to focus on portion control. ;)

Karey- You're right about me and the scale! haha. It almost never says what I want it to. But, believe me, I know about measurements and clothing fit...unfortunately those things went up as well this time. :( But, I am definately in a great mindset right now and doing what I need to do, so it's all good. Tonight, drinking chammomile tea.. I did see TBL tonight! It was good...except for the crying. I love watching the part where they go home and how they react differently to the food at the restaurants and what their families eat. The girl that got sent home looks so good! It's definately motivating. Brock loves that show too! Sorry your shoulder is still killing you! Maybe it's time to go get it checked by the doc? Maybe you can get some good muscle relaxers... ;)

Weight Loss Weight loss and eating carbs at night? Oct 20 2009

Original Post by dove2424:

I always forget how many people are here that are just plain mean.  I aplogize for getting my terms all screwed up.  I am obviously NOT a nutritionist.  I was sharing the information that I got.  Why?  Because I thought it might be nice to get some information out there.  Why is nutrition so messed up.  I could find articles about the evils of carbs and find JUST as many that sing carbs praises.  Where do we get REAL education?  How do we REALLY know what to do?  I went to a friend, nurse and dietition.  This is an ON-LINE forum.  People LIE online.  I don't know what your qualifications are.  I only know what you tell me, but I can go into my friends office and SEE her degrees hanging on her wall.  I can talk to her, and rather than make me feel like a ****, she is patient, kind, and explains to me what I wanted to know.

I am NOT going to be firing my trainer.  I DO know that what I have been doing is NOT working.  I DO know that my clothes are not fitting the way that they were.  I haven't gained a lot of weight.  (1 pound.)  I DO know that I can see (this could be in my head) mor fat on my body.  I DO know that I have been eating 1400 to 1500 calories on days that I work out (6 days a week.)  I DO know that I haven't lost an ounce of weight.  The only thing I DON'T know is why.  I am going to try what she says and eat the bulk of the carbs that I do eat in the day time, and minimize them at night.  I am NOT cutting them out.  I am 30 and I work out 6 days a week.  I know that I need carbs.  I just don't think that I need to eat bread at night.  I am going to give this a shot and see how it works.  If it does work, GREAT.  If not, I will try something else.  I am consuming the SAME amount of calories.  I am consuming the SAME amount of carbs, just changing the times that I DO consume them.  I REALLY don't see the harm in that.

Wow. I continue to be amazed at how people come on here asking for advise and then when they actually get advise from a licensed professional, they are defensive and incredulous...Again, I ask myself, why do I waste my time? And, my dear, why, pray tell, would I want to lie about being a dietitian? Believe me, it's no fantasy job... In the age of google everybody's a quasi "expert". I also didn't tell you not to eat or to eat carbs at night. I was just trying to help you understand some terminology. I, myself, avoid alot of carbs at night. Not because they "turn to fat at night" any more than any other macronutrient, but because they stimulate my appetite and make it difficult for me to stay within my calorie goal overall.

BTW, thanks for gettin my back amethyst!

Soraya- That salad sounds like my kinda food! Yum! Glad you seem to be getting back into the swing of healthy eating again. Glad you got a great w/o too! What did you do? lol...crying over Lifetime? Oh, man, thats too funny. :)

Karey- I love you new pic too! You are definately a hat person. I love hats too! I just don't know if they look right with my pixie haircut or not. I looked for that tea (honey van cham) at the organic store the other day, but she said they were out of it. I'll have to get it next time I go to publix. I'm drinking some Good Earth green tea with some lemon right now. Good job stickin to the small serv of froyo and staying in your cal goal too! Hope that back thing works itself out soon. maybe hubby should give you another massage. ;)

Me- Well, Brock and I did another 10 miles on the trails on Sun. (thats 20 miles in 2 days) and we actually even beat our fastest time on the Lickskillet trail (the hardest 5 mile trail) twice in a row! We were like an unstopable force! lol. I also ate very well all weekend and then...got on the scale this morning and my weight was UP 4 LBS.! WTF, yo? I had to have burned like 1600 cals over 20 miles and did eat well too. I must be retaining some mad water for some reason! I was sooo upset by the scale this morning that I ended up binging on anything and everything all day at work up until i had to go teach my diabetes class. :( I did go to the gym tonight though and did a 1/2 hr abs/core class and walked 3 miles on tm, but that's it. Didn't eat anything after that and, yes, the lock is back on the fridge... I am going to have to really cut back on my salt intake. (I am really salt sensitive) and up my protein over the next few days to get this water weight down. But I got cheered up when Kieran called me tonight after he got back from his tennis matches. :) I complained to him about the scale going up and his reaction was "Um, Gina, you do know you have a great body, right?". I was like, "well, no, but that is so sweet of you to say." That actually meant alot comiong from him because he really does not throw compliments around and he is in phenomenal shape.

Oh, BTW, I have a MAJOR virus on my computer and most likely will not be able to use it for a while. Will have to take it in to get fixed. It is working about 20% right now...so if I don't post as much for a few days, that's why! But I still have the work computer.

Have a great night.

Weight Loss Weight loss and eating carbs at night? Oct 20 2009

Original Post by dove2424:

Thank you all.. This is the most response I have ever gotten from a question here, and I have been on calorie count for the last 6 years.  (wow.. I can't believe it has been that long, it sure was easier to lose weight when I was 24!)

I spoke to a nurse who also has a degree in nutrition.  She kinda said the oppisite of some of you, but I am gonna share anyway.  She said that as we get older, carbs at night are the enemy.  Complex carbs that is.  The reason is, Complex carbs turn to sugar to be burned off, but then you go to bed so instead of it all getting burned, a small amount gets burned, (you burn calories sleeping) and the rest goes from CC to sugar to fat.  That is why I have noticed an increase of fat around my midsection.

Her advice is NOT for me to cut out carbs, because I do work out so much I DO need them.  Her advice was to cut them down at night.  (good by fat free frozen yogurt.. I will miss you!)  She said that I need to eat the majority (2/3) of my carbs BEFORE I go to the gym.  She also said that people eat WAY more carbs than they think they do.  She says, at night I need to eat no more bread.  I need to stick with protein (for my muscles) and Simple carbs like veggies.  This way the small amount of carbs that I am eating (in the veggies) are being used (when I sleep) and there is not a bundle that is not being utilized.

Most importantly, she said that EVERY BODY IS DIFFRENT.  Your body may utilize complex carbs diffrent than mine.  But lucky me, I log what I eat every day and she took a look at my account.  The only reason that she can see that I was gaining fat (as much as I work out) is the bread that I eat at night.  She told me to try this and check back in a month and a half.  She is confient that this is the ticket, but if I am still not losing weight, I may have to go see my doctor.  I have a deficit calorie wise, and if this isn't it, I may have a thyroid problem (I don't think that is likely since I get a blood test every year and that came back fine.)

Thank you to everyone that posted.  I'll let you know if this works, eating most carbs during the day and fewer at night.  Be advised this is not a low carb diet.  This is me shuffling around my complex carbs to something that is better for my body.

I can't tell who's more confused, you, the trainer, or the nurse with the so-called "nutrition degree"...Not sure where to start with this one. I am a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator with a masters degree in nutrition...so I will try to quickly clear some of this up.

First, the terms "simple carbs" and "complex carbs" are not used in the "real" nutrition world (ie: by Registered Licensed Dietitians) because they are terms that have been historically misused and are therefore confusing to the lay-person. The term "simple carbohydrate" by definition is a "Monosaccharide" a simple sugar; a carbohydrate that cannot be broken down to simpler substances by hydrolysis, e.g. glucose, fructose and galactose. A "Complex carbohydrate" is a "Polysaccharide" consisting of a chain of glucose molecules, ie: starch. Whether somthing is a simple or a complex carb says nothing of the actual health value of the carbohydrate, nor does it delegate how quickly it enters the blood stream (ie: glycemic index)...so, by definaition, white flour contains complex carbs just the same as a whole grain but they are obviously not nutritionally equal and an orange "contains" simple carbs just as coke/pepsi does, but they are in no way nutritionally equal. Vegetables would certainly NOT be considered "simple carbs" (as you said in your post above)...but they can contain some "single molecule" sugars (ie: simple carbs). Again, those two terms should (and have been) be thrown out of our nutrition vocabulary.

Consider replacing those terms with "whole, unprocessed carbs" and "processed, low fiber carbs".. and stick with mostly "whole, unprocessed".

Now, as far as the "carbs turning to fat" at night issue, well, using that logic, then ALL calories you consume at night would turn to fat, because you are not burning much energy at night. So why would the calories from fat or protein be utililized any differently than the calories from the carbs?

Bottom line...balance your calories out throughout the day. Get a good balance of calories from whole, minimally processed sources of fat, pro, and carbs. Choose high fiber carbs over low fiber carbs and if you haven't reached your calorie limit for the day by the time you get home from the gym at night, then EAT SOME HEALTHY FOOD. It does not significantly matter to your "belly fat" whether the calories at that specific time of the day are coming from pro, carbs, or fat.

Wow. That actually seems sorta creepy to me. Let me guess, she also cooks all your meals, does your laundry, and makes your bed? I guess I feel that way because I was brought up to be fairly independant by the age of about 15.

Thanks Jane.  It's time this has been brought up.  It is to the point that I don't even open half the posts because it looks like it is one of the ED posts.  We need to push the Mods to keep this site as a Healthy Weight management site.  Thanks again.

Agreed! Thanks gi-jane for bringing this up..

I posted a question about this product a few months back. Didn't get much response then. Maybe it's becoming more popular now. I agree it's a little nuts to spend $46 to have it shipped. I'm hoping it will start to be available in more local stores so I can try just one pint first.

Unfortunately parts of this site are becoming overrun with people with eating disorders.  The 'Health and Support', 'Maintenance' and 'Weight Gain' boards are out of control.   And I think this is putting people like you off.... which is quite wrong, in my opinion, and I'm getting quite fed up with it.   It started off that CC members would only support people in active recovery but the mods seem to let anything go these days.  (Mods take note)

The CC message board rules state "Promotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited"  So if you see an eating disorder post feel free to report it as a violation of the rules.

GI Jane- I agree! I was just talking to another cc member/friend of mine about this very thing last night...I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. Seems to have balooned over the last few months. I think it's a "chain reaction".

Karey- Stick with me girl and your food horizons are bound to be expanded! Haha. Click on this link and you will see what polenta is... Polenta is a traditional Northern Italian staple food, even moreso than pasta! If you click on their "products" tab and then click "100% Organic" tab you will see the "sun-dried tomato garlic one, that's the one I made yesterday. Polenta can be served creamy, almost like grits, or firmer and cut into little cakes, like the kind I had yesterday. But, it's so good and versatile, just like pasta, rice, potato...Try it! I know they sell it at Publix. There are some recipes for it on the link below too.

As for the private practise, yes, I would love to be able to just do that exclusively, but I think it will be a while before that happens. I need to focus more on it though. I am thinking of getting into the "corporate wellness" feild. It's something that is huge right now (where companies offer wellness programs to their employees as part of their insurrance incentives). But, I'm still in the early stages of planning, so we'll see!

mmm...that "take the cake" icecream sounds too good. I definately will NOT be buying any! haha. Good job on avoiding the bread basket (it's a major calorie killer!) I think it's good that you took a rest day. Hopefully your neck and back will feel alot better today!

Soraya- Are you back at work again today? No fast food for you today! Plan ahead...bring something to work with you or be sure to order something healthy. It was good to catch up with you last night! I've got that book saved on my Amazon "wish list".

It's a beautiful day here in AL today! Woohoo! A little chilly still but the sky is pure blue! Brock and I are going back to the old state park trails again this afternoon. We have plans to do a 5 mile trail ("Lickskillet trail" known to us as..."Lick-suck-it" haha) and another 2.5 mile trail.

Have a great, healthy day girls!!

Girls!! It was so COLD here today and spitting rain, but Brock and I did 10 MILES on the trails anyway!! We BROUGHT IT!! It only got up to a high of 48 degrees. We were cold but sweating at the same time. Kinda sucked but still an awesome workout.

Then we went to the organic country store and bought some organic almond milk, pearl barley, and organic polenta and some yummy wheat free organic baked goodies that the lady that owns the store made. We got one vanilla cupcake (made with spelt flour) a sweet potato tart and a blondie brownie and split them and ate them with some organic fresh brewed cappuccino (Yum!). Then we came back to my house and made some baked polenta and heated up some of the lentil soup I made and froze the other night and made some kale chips to go with. Karey, kale is a green leafy veg kinda like turnip greens or collard greens. It is really good added to soups or sauted in some red wine and olive oil too.

The lady that owns the organic country store agreed to promote my private practise nutrition counseling servise to her customers if I promote her store to my clients. Could be a good business partnership! So I am going to take some flyers and business cards over to her this week. I also got a private practise client this week who booked me for 2 hrs of counseling up front and says she wants to see me on a regular basis. (At $65 per hr) Hopefully I can get my private practise built up more in the next few months. :) I do need to get my home office set up a little more business like though.

Thats cool! Do you have to leave something when you find something? Do you think it's a good way to get a workout or more a brain workout? I love hiking, but I have never used a GPS. Does it take alot of prep-time outside of the actual hunting on foot?

I just googled "canned chicken resipes" and found this list of 20 recipes on allrecipes.com. My vote is for the "6 can chicken tortilla soup". Sounds easy and good and relatively healthy.
