Motivation In a major depression slump. Any suggestions on how to get out? Apr 14 2009

good morning!

glad to hear things are looking better to you.  even your message sounds like you are feeling better

egg hunts and flying kites - how fun!  your kids are very fortunate to have a mom that will do things like that with them and take them to the zoo

your sweet potatoes and tilapia sounds so yummy!

and wow - your gym routine sounds like it's a blast!  I would try to make it to a place like that every day, too -

lists - I love lists - for everything!  and you're right - being able to cross something off is VERY empowering

if you're up for it - let us know how it goes @ your doc's, and what's working for you

keep it up - you're doing great!

my - you do sound like you have quite a bit on your plate!

I do like the suggestions above, especially about checking w. your doc for medications that might be out of whack.  while you're at it, get your thyroid, blood sugar and hormone levels checked too!

also the red, the CHOCOLATE, and not being to hard on yourself!

I was going thru some MAJOR depression issues last year, moods all over the place, couldn't get a handle on work or home - crying, frustrated, devastated most of the time

couple of things I did - maybe one or two might help, or get you going in the right direction?

  • I quit drinking soy milk - my aunt suggested this after she had some major whackiness going on and her rheumatologist suggested it to her - I think this has made the biggest difference
  • I broke everything down to the simplest parts of what I felt like I could deal with at the time - the thought of trying to clean the entire house over the weekend was too much, but could I take 5 minutes to put the towels away? yes - and it made me feel better, whether I kept going or not
  • I quit the gym - now I am using mapmywalk.com to schedule walks with my husband, and I found some simple pilates dvd's @ half price books for $4 - and I have made more progress in three weeks than I did in two months at the gym

good luck with everything!  check back in and give us an update!

we are all rooting for you!

Weight Loss wondering what to do - stay the course? set new goal? Apr 10 2009

slimabear: SAN ANTONIO Spurs -

yes, I know we dropped to 5th place in the Western Conf - but I still hold out hope!  I have to!  I am a diehard Spurs fan!

UPDATE on the weight loss - I decided to increase my calorie intake yesterday to 1750 - it was actually kind of hard eating that much - and guess what - the scale was down this morning!

Guess it's just going to take a bit of playing around to get it right -

THANKS!

ok - point taken - that does make sense

because I am logging my walking, I changed my activity level to sedentary to keep from counting it twice

so my new burn meter is 2290 for non workout days, and 2590 for workout days

to maintain a 500 calorie deficit for each day puts me at a 1790 intake and 2090 intake, respectively

as I have been steady at around 1700 to 1800, shouldn't I still be seeing some kind of results?

and yes, I pay very close attention to portion size listed on labels and due to not seeing any changes I have become obsessive about the measuring cups (driving my husband up the wall!)  if I am unsure about the true size or calorie measurement,  I always choose the bigger one listed on CC!

I just turned 33, am 6'2" and have a large frame

CC puts my BMR @ 2240

I do have a desk job, but am also wearing a pedometer to make sure I move around during the day - I take walk breaks two or three times a day and have maintained a daily step average of about 12000

with activities added in for walking and pilates, I usually wind up with a burn of around 2400 on non-gym days

I go to the gym at least twice a week for an hour and a half to two hours for treadmill, elliptical and weights, which usually puts me at 2800 burn on gym days

I am consistently staying at or below 1800 caloric intake, with the Sunday before Memorial Day being my only day over (I had about 2800 due to some mixed drinks!  yes - I log those too!)

so for non gym days I usually have a 500 min deficit, and gym days a 1000 min deficit

eggs, kashi, or oatmeal for breakfast

chicken breast and veggies, or grilled chicken salad w. low fat/cal dressing for lunch and dinner

bananas, pears, grapes, carrots, walnuts for snacks

if I do eat bread (max of two slices per day) it is light whole wheat @ 40 cal per slice

at this point my only vice is wine, and I think that is probably the only thing keeping me sane -

cesty8 - so refreshing to hear!  I am not fond of the tiny mess making little grubbers either!

everyone is always "blah, blah - you'll be a great mom!  look at how you take care of your dogs!"  yeah - that's because my dogs eat, poop, and sleep when I tell them too!

I'm 32, about to be 33 - and no, the "biological clock" thing is just not happening here.  I am very lucky that my husband agrees with me on this - we're just not willing to procreate.

I know it is not the ideal situation you are finding yourself in right now, but I think it is extremely healthy and smart of you to recognize and take in to consideration your HONEST and TRUE feelings instead of caving to what you "should" do - it will ultimately create the best situation for you  - and the baby.

good luck with everything - feel free to msg me (I'm from Houston, too - living in San Antonio now Smile)

OMG - on the way home and before dinner are HORRIBLE for me too!  I hit the house and head staright for the pantry!

I have managed to change this habit - so there is hope!  If I can do it - anyone can!

Now, before I leave work to go home I'll have some fruit - an apple, pear, banana - to stave of the tummy grumbles.

And I have made myself get "snack" stuff out ahead of time for when I get home - baby carrots, or I'll leave grapes in a bowl on the counter, or chop up some celery sticks - something easy to see and easy to grab when I walk in the door or while I'm getting dinner together.

Also, I've made myself a stash at work to keep the mid-day munchies at bay and give myself better choices but still snack.  I keep the 100 calorie packs of popcorn, cheese nips, quaker mini bites, and Kashi cereal.

Changing your habits won't happen overnight, it's a step at a time.  You'll get the hang of it!

UPDATE -

after much discussion w. my husband and research, I decided to stop the pill two weeks ago.

I am still counting my calories and working out, and despite having visited the coast this past weekend where all we do is fish and eat, I have still managed to lose 2 pounds in two weeks, where previously I had been stuck at the same weight for almost two months.

COINCIDENCE?!?!?

maybe - maybe not - but I think I know what is working for me.....

I do the same thing on the weekends, but my problem is wine....

give it a day or two  - if you're back on track for Monday and Tuesday, I'll bet you see a loss by Wednesday am.

amount aside, all the spices and whatnot for the seasonings has TONS of sodium, so you're probably retaining water just from that

all in all - crawfish are a pretty healthy dinner, including the potatos and corn!  it's the other stuff that goes with it - the beer! - that'll kill your weigh in

did you at least have a good time?

WOW - minimal caloric intake for any woman should be 1200 - that is what your body needs to just sleep 24 hours a day

are you under the care of a doc that advised 1000 calories or less?

Thanks to all of you for replying - Smile

I have not weighed myself since posting, and have decided to set a schedule for maybe Wed mornings - still working on that.....

I do usually drink about 70 to 80 ozs of water a day (my job offers unlimited supply of 1pint 7oz Ozarka water bottles- lucky me!), but the end of last week I had been drinking more than usual.

I also went back and checked my sodium intake, which for Thursday and Friday was REALLY high - I didn't realize that......

And I had not been sleeping well - and I'm pretty sure I'm PMS'ing, but since starting a new bc pill, my cycle is all out of whack -

put all of those together - and well - I can see five pounds!

Today is a work out day, so I am eating little snacks (1/2c of dry Kashi cereal in between b-fast and lunch, low fat/low cal yogurt for in between lunch and dinner) to try to get my calorie intake up -

And found the BMR formula and calculated it myself - 1664.7 - so most days I was not even giving myself enough fuel just to breath.......Embarassed

I'll check back in here with an update on my Wednesday morning weigh in! Wish me luck!

japmonks - thanks -

after numerous hours of research on the internet and discussing it with my husband - and spotting for the past five days having not even actually starting my period yet -  I have decided to stop taking my pill AND to find a new gynecologist.

I figured I'd give myself a month or two to see how things go with my cycle and my weight and my libido, and then decide if I want to try a different pill.

and I have planned a "get-away weekend" for me and hubby this coming weekend...... and yes, we will be using other forms of protection!

courtbarb:

sounds like you're having dissention between what your mind knows and what your heart (body) wants......

You are very fortunate that you are in a position to make a decision about having a baby (instead of finding out you're having one!) and also that your husband is thinking along the same lines.

You said you are in school, working and building a house - those are some big things going on in your life already!

Maybe if you and hubby sat down and set some goals with timelines that you feel you should accomplish to put BOTH of you in the optimal position to get preganant it might help (graduate in May, finish the house by Aug, have this much money in savings by Sept, etc... then try for baby in DEC!)

Setting a goal and working your way to attaining it can sometime calm those crazy "I want it NOW! and I can do it NOW!" thoughts/feelings, plus it really sets down the right foundation to make sure everything works out right and falls in to place.

Plus, setting goals and working your way toward them seems like something you're probably good at - your school and your weight loss!

Just a suggestion - but glad to know you're putting thought and effort in to bringing another person in the world!  (and no poking holes in comdems! that's not fair!)

pgeorgian - no offense taken -

but that's my point - if the pill increases appetite, and increased appetite causes weight gain....

then yes, the pill does cause weight gain by way of increased appetite (or water retention, or craziness, or whatever else would not be happening if the pill weren't in the picture.....)

I think you gave yourself your own answer in your last sentance.....

Cutting off all communication and ignoring is what he's doing to you - don't play his game!  Plus, while it will give the "upper hand" for a little bit, you will probably only wind up feeling guilty.  After all, he is your son.

But just because he is your son does not mean you should compromise yourself.  If you feel lying - to anyone for anything - is wrong, then don't.

Maybe you could tell him you appreciate the fact that he is trying, but this is the consequence of his actions.  You will help, but you will not be taken advantage like in the past.  And decide exactly what you are willing to do or not do BEFORE you talk to him - that will make telling him whtaever you have to tell him much easier.

MILLIONS of 20 year-olds have done this before him, and most without the support system of a dad and a mom.

You already feel manipulated - don't allow yourself to be put in that position again.  Yes, he's your kid, but he's also an adult now and needs to start acting like one.

Wow - these links aren't much help -

"The main reasons for weight gain due to pills have been fluid retention, increase in appetite and extra fat laid down."

That says right there that it causes weight gain. How can it be a myth if they are saying it's true?

yes - it is possible - currently battling this problem myself....

I started on Yaz last year and actually dropped a few pounds the first two weeks,  but then about six weeks in I just went crazy.

SO - I went back to the doc and was switched to Zovia.  I gained 8 pounds the first 14 days.  I added another few over the holidays, but have lost those.  These last 8 pounds I cannot get rid of.

anyway to find a new gyn at/near your school?  or maybe just going to see a gen practioner?

I'm thinking about making another appointment to ask for a switch......

anyone notice any other changes?  like sex drive?

I'm usually ready to go at least a few times a week (I've been with my husband for six years, so I figure a couple times a week is good), but the past three/four months it has literally dwindled to the point that I just don't care.  I realized two weeks ago that it had been a week and a half.  I was getting a bit concerned until I found a website listing some of the side effects for my brand of pill - Zovia - as decreased libido and bloating.  It's the only site I found that listed those, and now I can't find the site again.

my period has also increased from 5 to 6 days of normal flow, to about 4 days of "heavy" flow and an additioanl six or seven days of spotting. so going through that takes up about two weeks out of the month.....

bufflara - thank you SO much for getting this going!  it helps that my bf is 5'11", but sometimes just knowing that there ARE other women out there going thru the same "height" issues makes it easier to deal with the too small/too short pants, shoes, sleeves, shoulders, no leg room on planes, theatres, restaurants, not being able to get in compact cars and all of those other wonderful things that make me remember I am certainly not average!

Weight gain with birth control is NOT just a myth - the effects are different for everyone.

I started with Yaz the end of last summer, and actually lost about 4 pounds the first week.  The only problem was about six weeks in I just went crazy.

I went back to my gynecologist and she switched me to Zovia - and I gained 8 pounds in 14 days.  Not water weight, not swelling, not bloating - those 8 pounds stuck, and over the holidays I added about 3 more.

I'm not crazy now, but I also can't get rid of this weight despite joining a gym and regulating my calories very closely.  Avoiding alcohol and drinking more water than usual (almost 30 oz per day -  oops!  that's supposed to be 70 oz per day!) tends to help, but I continually feel bloated and it is worse when I have my period.

I'm going to give it one more month to see some normalcy (my cycle is completely out of whack) or improvements before I got back to my doc.

If you're not feeling "right", please by all means go back to your doc.

muttlover - you might keep growing!  Enjoy it!

I was only a bit over 6' when I went to college.  My sophomore year I went to Italy and Europe and when I got back I had hit 6'2".  My brother - who is now 35 and 6'7" - kept growing until he was 22.  (by the way - northern Germany and the Netherlands - the land of our people!  I was an "average" size woman there!)

I had a hard time with guys in H.S.  I went to a small private school and the only guy there taller than me was my own brother.  College was a big change, not only with the men but with me "growing" in to myself.

I dated jocks, muscians, geeks, gearheads, bikers, artists, dropouts, etc....  tall and short alike.  The entire time I was having fun and and figuring out what I liked and what was important to me.  Being tall can certainly get you attention, but being tall and confident is what gets you the positive attention.  And of course the endless "do you play basket ball?" "are you parents tall", etc.....

I'm 32 now, and my husband and I just celebrated our 6 year anniversary.  He's 6' - but I didn't realize that until we had already been together a few months and someone showed us a picture.  I asked him why he wasn't standing up straight and he said he was.  I'm 2" taller than him but never noticed.  When it all boils down, it just wasn't something that was important.  (by the way - he is the shortest person in my family now except the girl my brother married who is 5'9")

I certainly see it as a blessing - until it comes time to shop for jeans!

And by the way - I love wearing heels, and my husband loves it too!
