I use to say I was making a lifestyle change, but too many people thought that I was "coming out" as a lesbian... lol. So, I use diet in the vernacular. I understand what I mean. I am making a change for life. |

My 4 year old does not lift weights, but I am amazed at how much she can lift and carry. She routinely helps me with the laundry, full baskets she carries to the laundry room and it is at the end of our apartment complex. She will carry the detergent, bleach... I have even seen her tote a 15lb bag of rice in the house from the car. Only after she carries it does she complain it was heavy. I just thought she was strong... you may have a strong one too.

I skimmed through, but may have missed a few things. i do not think that this was mentioned... THE COST OF FOOD AND RESIDENTIAL SEGREGATION. Are two of the primary causes of obesity... especially in less affluent communities. I actually studied this in school so hear me out. We live in cities that make it nearly impossible to walk anywhere. The store is miles... not blocks away. Our jobs are hours, not minutes away. As such we have engineered a society that makes us more mobile... but not physically mobile... technologically mobile. When is the last time you walked to the store...? How long is your commute? The cheapest and most convenient food, is the worst for us, and is more readily available than the healthier food... not to mention it is packaged to fit our "tech mobile lives... hence the drive through. When is the last time you saw a walk up window? Grocery store chains avoid less affluent areas, but fast food joints abound. The ratio in some poor areas is 3 to 1... or even 3 to 0. Yes... some neighborhoods do not have anything more than a convenience store... emphasis on "convenience". It is a social problem and an individual problem. We need to take personal responsibility, but we also need to take social responsibility for the problem. |

| Weight Loss | You know you have been dieting too long when... | May 17 2008 00:38 (UTC) |

Thank you for this post. I so needed it. I just asked my dietician this week if i was developing an eating disorder, or an unatural relationship with food. I do everything you guys do... and that makes me feel better than i am not alone in my insanity. The "20 minute rule". Okay... so you eat, and afterward you are still feeling hungry. But, rather than eat more of whatever you sit for 20 minutes, and drink water... if the hungry feeling passes you stop eating. If it does not... you can eat more, but only if you quickly recalculate your totals to make sure you do not go over. The "blue bag rule". I can only eat what is in my "blue bag" ... as I pack my lunch, dinner and snacks for the whole day. I actually get excited when i see the blue bag... I guess it is like dogs... when you open the dog food bag. You will actually not eat anything you do not know the caloric value of. You check the website of every restaurant for the nutritional and caloric values of their menu. You will not eat there if they do not have one. Or, you make the manager take the nutritional information plaque off the wall, so you can see it before you order, and then chastise him for not having it in a hand out form. [ i actually did this.] You take a 1/2 and 1/4 measuring cups to family functions... so you can be sure to control your portions. You freak if you do not exercise more than 5 days a week. The insanity goes on... |

| Weight Loss | I HATE THE scalee | Apr 25 2008 02:12 (UTC) |
|
Scales are often like husbands... useful, but can really get on your nerves. I weigh daily... and get frustrated too. venting helps... just think about all the times the scale did move and how you felt. the only scale i really hate... is the one in my doctors office. i get up in the morning and weigh x... and by the time i get to the office fully clothed and post breakfast i weigh y. I understand why the difference... but, i hate that they write that number on my chart... i feel like hey... i weigh 2-5 lbs less than that... and i worked damn hard to get there... can i get some credit for that please...
i understand... feel free to vent anytime.

I have come to love the compliments. As... I am doing this alone [with the exception of you lovely people here] it is all the encouragement I get. The only problem is that I do hate it when people ask for #. It is great to tell them I have lost 28lbs, but embarrassing to admit that i still weigh 199. I get the "OMG she is/was a fat cow look" ... or the ever sympathetic... "you do not even look it." comments. |

| Weight Loss | What are you most looking forward to? | Apr 25 2008 01:58 (UTC) |

1. Light between my thighs. 2. No more blood pressure medication. 3. feeling as sexy as my husband thinks i am. 4. shopping!!!! Specifically, never again shopping at Lane Bryant. i too have given up on Victoria's Secret... they discriminate against chesty women. No matter how thin I get... they do not sell bras in my cup size... EVIL... EVIL store. So I will just have to keep buying their scents and dream. 5. loving me. 6. being an inspiration to my family... to do stop giving lip service to their health, and start doing something about it. 7. wanting to have my picture taken. 8. the respect and admiration of my children... and the example it will set for them. 9. no bikinis too many stretch marks... but looking good in a one piece with a sarong... yeah! I could actually swim with my kids... i did not at all last summer... to embarrassed. |

| Weight Loss | So very confused... | Apr 25 2008 01:45 (UTC) |

I work out 5-6 times a day [avg daily exercise burn 500-600]... and burn about 2600 BMR. I consume 1500 a day... but that is low... CC puts me at 1850, 1750 if I mark myself as sedentary. My dietitian wants me to stay closer to an avg of 1500... so, it does not sound too off. I am finding that I am hungrier. But since I eat in a range 1500-1750... I can adjust for days when hunger is an issue. What is a weight loss specialist doctor called? I just see a dietician... she is really good. But, I wonder what a doctor could tell me. |

| Weight Loss | Question for those of you not counting calories really closely...?? | Apr 25 2008 01:38 (UTC) |

Thank you for the congrats... I realized that I still have not mastered eating out. I also learned that I have not mastered family functions either. I did manage to eat a Red Robin Cheesburger last week, with fries... and stay on target. I just ordered a plain burger w/ out mayonaise, and relish, and only ate one serving of fries. However, I had checked the website before I went out...so I had a good idea how many calories i was getting. The problem is the impromtu stuff... last minute... that I can not plan for. Additionally, I have been unsuccessful at getting my family to work with me on my weight loss... as such every family function has a tone of food that even in moderation... will put me way over. Since our family functions usually run several hours... it is hard. I have tried not eating before... and tried eating before... the results are the same. No matter how little I eat... I am over. it is just the type of foods that are served. Weekends... and cooking for my family are other triggers. It is really hard to stay on target... when you have three kids and a husband to cook for... and they are not always interested in eating what I eat. Just curious what others were doing... and how they made it work.

| Weight Loss | My Longest Plateau Is..... | Apr 25 2008 01:24 (UTC) |

Great question... about 2-3 weeks for me. Yeah I know not a long time...but. torture none the less. For me it was just really watching my calories more closely, varying my intake and exercise routine and increasing the intensity of my work out. I know eat in a range 1500-1750... and my 15 minute mile is pretty intense... I hope am dreading a plateau like the ones people talk about here. Do you think there is a way to avoid one? It seems that everyone admitted to not being so strict during that time. I know I was tempted to fall off the wagon when the scale was not moving. |

| Weight Loss | Dash Diet | Apr 24 2008 20:50 (UTC) |

I am using the DASH diet too. I have hypertension. My main weight loss goal is to get off of medication. My blood pressure yesterday was 100/68 the lowest it has ever been... on medication. I just got my dosage reduced. The DASH diet is really easy... I found that I was already making many of the choices on it already. However, I do struggle with keeping my sodium intake lower. I work two jobs... and therefore often use prepacked things to help make up my lunch and dinner. My dietician has helped me make better choices in the prepackaged department. Health Choice... is really low in sodium. There cafe steamers are to die for. I was really suprised at how good they taste. I saw other links here, but you can also try Kaiser Permanente's Health Encyclopedia... at www.kp.org. I do not think you have to be a member to access the health information. Hope this helps... |

the reason i started walking 3mi instead of my cardio kickboxing... is because well, I was bored, wanted to be outside...and did not think it was working as well. so i hope that change will help. as for the calories... eating more? Maybe... but, why? if i burn 2600 just breathing...add in the 600-700 i burn in my daily routine... and I eat 1500-1600, that would put me negative...right? Am I too negative... is that the point? |

| Weight Loss | walking away the pounds | Apr 14 2008 02:45 (UTC) |

I started with a walking DVD... in front of the TV. I did it for a month... and lost about 8lbs... however, I coupled that with calorie counting and restricting my caloric intake. After the first month... I added a cardio kick boxing type routine; also on DVD. Now that the weather is better... I walk outside. The DVD came with a CD that converted the workout for outdoor use. I walk 3 miles a day... and about another 2 miles, just walking around for daily work. I have lost a total of 22lbs since January 5th. However, I have been at a plateau for the last 3 weeks... A lot of people think that walking in front of the TV is "weird"... i do not think it is any weirder that a treadmill... hell, you walk to nowhere on that. it has worked for me... hang in there. |

| It is really simple. The surgery immediately reduces the size and capacity of their stomach. It can not hold more than that. That is the purpose of the surgery to reduce the amount of food a person can eat at one time, in hopes of surgically reducing their caloric intake. Over time, they are able to increase the calories, and "stretch" their stomach. They also have to be careful, because the have sutures on their stomach. Anyone who has had the surgery, please correct me if I got it wrong. That is what my good friend had to do... hope that helps | |||

| There are hundreds of post on this site everyday. Some nonsensical, some serious... some a repeat of much of the same. Everyone here is just reaching out and sharing their feelings, thoughts and questions. I realize when you post something in a public forum you invite comments from any and all who may view it. Whenever, I come across a post that makes no sense to me, or that seems ridiculous... I simply do not post. Why could you have not done the same? Trying to lose weight is hard enough with out comments like this. It took you at least 20 seconds to post this... you can definitely have that back. | |||

Thank you for your concern...but, not at the moment. We are looking to make a change, but will not be able to do so until June. I do not know where you live, but the cost of living out here in CA... is way out of control. Our childcare cost run about $1600 a month. That would be the case even if I did not work the second job, because I do not get off my "day" job in time to pick my oldest child up from school, and the babies "2 & 3" would have to be in childcare during the day. My husband communtes 2 hours each way to work daily. My commute is only about 20-30 minutes, 45 on a bad day. We can not work where we live. If you know anything about CA, the jobs that pay well enough...are all in the major metro areas, unfortunately they do not pay enough to live in the same area... so everybody commutes. I am looking to quit my day job and just work nights when the school year ends, and take the kids out of childcare. It will mean that we will not be able to buy a house...[median home price here is 400,000 even with the down turn]. So we will have to stay in our cramped 2 bedroom condo with the 5 of us...for at least another year or two until the babies are old enough for kindergarten. We have cut all we can, and really live with in our means. Living just cost so much... to make matters worse, we have a lot of debt. School loans, and the fall out from my husband being unemployed for a year... and me missing a lot of work due to my son being born premature. [All I believe are factors in my weight gain.] A lot of things have just put us in a tight spot. there is light at the end of the tunnel...but, for now this is what I have to do. So, I have to make it work. Dragon to answer your question... my deficit is usually 500 or more...rarely less. |

Where do you think I can get that Walden DVD? On-line? Bookstore? Because of time I can not take a class...but a DVD would be great. I went to a class once years ago, and quit, because I could not do the poses and there were few modifications. I will definitely try the DVD. |

| Weight Loss | Baby Belly | Feb 21 2008 19:33 (UTC) |
|
| I have had three children...now 10, 4 and 3. I have never gotten my body back. I have a substantial pooch. I noticed that it was worse after #3 who was born by c-section. I had #2 and #3 very close together. I think that had a lot to do with it. I did not have a lot of time to get back into shape or lose weight before baby #2. Baby #2 was 6 months old and nursing when I found out about #3. I think genetics has a lot to do with it to. My girl friend who has always been model thin... got her body back quickly. She is a little heavier than she was pre-baby. But, 10lbs on her frame, just gives her nicer curves. Her stomach though FLAT. So i think it is a combination. Most women do not go back to what they were completely, and after several kids...surgery is probably necessary to retract the skin...unless you have really good genes. I just know that bikinis or suits with out a sarong are out for me. | |||
| Weight Loss | BMI... the scary future no one is really talking about. | Feb 21 2008 19:10 (UTC) |
6 |
| You are correct about the operative risk of being overweight. I agree wholeheartedly, and would have lost weight whether there was a BMI requirement or not. To be honest I am surgery phobic. After my c-section, I know how much harder it is to heal a wound when you are obese...especially an abdominal one. I just think it is not fair for them to set an arbitrary BMI number. To be honest I have not weighted 140lbs since I was in high school. And that last time I was 170 was before I had my 2nd child. It just seems so daunting. I wish they would take it case by case. I can not even talk to the plastic surgeon for a consult...until I lose all the weight. He may look at my frame and think that 20 lbs or 30 lbs may be enough... not over 40lbs. I just hate the fact that I have to remain in pain until I lose weight. greater motivation I guess. Hey...maybe i will lose so much weight I will not need a reduction. Although i doubt it ...i have had large breast my whole life...even when I was 140lbs. | |||
| Weight Loss | Went to doctor yesterday... frustrated... mini binge...help!!! | Feb 21 2008 18:07 (UTC) |

Thank you all... no the BMI is not a law. But, my HMO requires a BMI of 29 or under before your primary provider can refer you to the plastic surgeon for evaluation. Even if you have "medical needs" for the surgery, and not cosmetic. So... since I am not rich I will have to lose the weight to get the surgery I need...and rid my self of back pain. I checked it at a BMI of 29 I would need to weigh 170lbs. That is 43lbs less than I weigh now. To reach my target BMI I would need to weigh 140lbs. I was shooting for 150, but after checking the chart, that would still put me in the high end range...as such getting life insurance would be near impossible. Thank you for the encouragement. I am not going to quit. Just have to retool and work at it. |

| Weight Loss | Double shifts as a waitress in a kitchen all day! Help! | Feb 21 2008 03:32 (UTC) |

| Sandwiches are good. It seems stupid...but, it is true. You can always make or buy a large sandwich cut it in half and eat it at a lunch and dinner. Side salads are good too... cut up veggies. 100 calorie packs are really easy ... the granola bars are good. Slim fasts are great quickies...freeze them, by the time you are ready to eat...they will be defrosted, still cold and will help keep you lunch cool. I have the same issue. I have to pack my lunch/dinner for the whole day... just a few things. Sometimes you just want something hot too... have you tried looking at the nutritional information for your restaurant if it exists. Or, but a pocket calorie count book and guesstimate your choices. You can also just make healthier choices at the restaurant. I have probably been no help....but, I tried. | |||
