wow, reading these posts really makes me thankful.  Not that my parents didn't pass me any bad habits because they did a few, but they always taught me that vegetables were great.  Vegetables were an important part of every meal and were rarely covered in cheese/butter. they were usually just enjoyed for what they were. I'm surprised and sad how many of you missed out on an early love of veggies!

Also, say what you will about the south, but I definitely live in the south and the only fried food my parents ever made was the very occaisional batch of fried okra.

I love my vet's office because if your pet is fat, they tell you and tell you what to do about it.  The last time I brought one of my cats in he was 3/4 of a lb overweight, and she told me so. The other cats I brought in was the perfect weight, and she told me so and encouraged me to keep it up. This is what vets should do.  I have a friend with an obese cat, and I asked her how her vet reacted to his weight; she said that the vet had never said anything! We're talking OBESE cat! I had to tell her that she was killing it and how much she needed to feed him. It's sad that vets are either afraid to tell you or just don't care maybe?

I don't know if this is anything like what you mean, but junk food makes me feel physically bad.  I generally eat pretty healthy foods, I just eat a little too much and I have a thing for pasta and bread =P. Anyways, I eat very little sugar or greasy foods, and when I eat a large serving of either it often makes me feel bad.  Greasyness, like potato chips or fast foods give me stomacheaches, and sugar makes me tired later.

It also makes me feel mentally bad a little, even if I premeditated it, like your brownie. Even if you want it so bad, once you've satisfied yourself you no longer have that urge pushing you to want it, and your hindsight says "did you really need that? did you really want that?" Hindsight messes with you that way, don't feel bad.

Foods Low-Calorie, No veggies please!!!! Apr 07 2009

My bf and I pride ourselves on our healthy dinners, and each night there is some form of vegetables.  First of all, potatoes and corn are starches! We do not count them as veggies, although they are technically so. If we have these for dinner, we need another green veggie (or red or purple, i guess).

My bf is a great cook, and he has gotten many people to like vegetables that were 'picky' eaters and didn't like them. He's also gotten my sister who HATES cheese to like foods with cheese. It's all about preparation! I LOVE vegetables, but they aren't always good. Try new recipes, or like someone above said, sneak them in. My mom used to make the most amazing lasagna with spinach and carrots shredded into the ricotta. It adds the nutrition and is delicious, but without seeming like you're eating vegetables.  My bf and I will make soups or stirfrys with frozen chopped spinach mixed in. You really can't even taste it and it cooks down so small it looks just like spices, but it adds so much nutrition! Also, try spaghetti squash. It's delicious and easy to make.  You can add things like cheese and butter and it's really not vegetably. Of course, it's healthier with less fatty things in it, but you can work your way to that. =)

yep...I've been doing good on my diet but went out drinking with my friend last night.  I didn't have too many calories of booze, so I was proud of myself. Unfortunately, my designated driver and the other person in the car wanted to stop at whataburger on the way home. I couldn't help myself! Oh well! It's SO much harder to resist food temptation when drinking... And I don't know about you, but I often crave greasy kinds of foods when I get hungover.

Foods Anybody else HATE Walmart?! Feb 19 2009

I HATE walmart!!!! Sometimes it is the best place to go for certain things and I'll go, but I end up saying "I hate Walmart!" at least 3 times before I leave the store.  None of the employees know where merchandise is, they don't have things that they definitely should, and so much of their stuff is crap! They do have some good deals and good things, but is it worth it? I don't know. *sigh*

I also really hate how they put nearly each item in it's own bag! They give you so many bags! I once bought a gallon of milk at my local walmart and I had to argue with the cashier to let me leave without a plastic bag! It has a handle on it! But nooo she says "they might think you stole it when you try to leave!" So give me a receipt! jeez.

That was my anti-Walmart rant...calm now Laughing

Health & Support does smoking lead to weightloss? Feb 19 2009

I've never been a smoker myself, but I know lots of people who do or at least used to.

It seems to temporarily reduce the appetite when one is hungry, but unless you smoke all the time, it wouldn't be really effective.  I personally know one person who started smoking for the purposes of losing weight and it didn't actually help her much.  It helped her avoid some really bad junk food cravings and such, but it was not really good as a diet aid.

One of the real problems with people who smoke for weight purposes is that if you quit, it's difficult not to put weight back on. In fact, lots of people who quit gain weight, at least initially, from having their appetite back.

One more point: I've met many very overweight people who are chain smokers. It really can't be that effective.

So...it really wouldn't help you that much unless you smoked all the time and had no intention of quitting...bleh! You're right: the health issues and nastiness are not worth the slight appetite suppression.  Caffeine does that too and is less unhealthy, although still can be if you have too much.

Weight Loss Unhappy with my body but always hungry? Feb 16 2009

I've noticed that when I start eating less/eating smaller portions I feel really hungry during the first couple of weeks. I think this is because I've gotten used to more food and heavier foods. I try to eat a lot more vegetables to counteract that.  After a couple week of smaller portion sizes and less food (1300-1600 calories for me) I find that I feel fuller easier and longer because I've gotten used to that amount of food.  Meals that were filling but finish-able I now can't finish. Give it some time.

Eat lots of vegetables! Fill up! I don't deprive myself of anything. I just eat smaller portions of the not so healthy stuff (or stuff that's healthy in moderation, like rice) and stuff myself with veggies.  I also bring baby carrots out with me in case I get hungry.  I end up snacking on them all day, so I don't ever have to get really hungry.

Weight Loss Is my calorie counting obsessive? Feb 14 2009

I count basically everything. I'd definitely count a sugar packet for coffee or a ketchup packet.  Little things can turn into big things so I go ahead and count it.  The only things I don't count are tiny tastes of things (like one fry or 1 chip), but I don't let myself do that more than once a day.

Smoke weed everyday? Not amazing for you, but not seriously detrimental.

Cocaine every day? Horrible.  It's not good for you on an occasional basis, and it's life-destroying on a daily basis.  I had to deal with a very close friend deal with a very serious addiction recently, so believe me.  Like someone above said, one gram starts as enough, but soon you'll need more and more and more. It starts as something you think you can control, but it doesn't stay that way long, especially if you do it often.

Please, if you do one thing, stay away from cocaine. I've seen too many people be ruined by it.  Some save themselves in time to not completely ruin their lives, but many don't.

Weight Loss Drinking is killing my diet Feb 12 2009
04:42 (UTC)

I've definitely had some of the same issues. I'm 22, and I love to go out and drink with my friends! First of all, I now ONLY have one night of drinking all week.  Any other night, only one drink if I want it.  To stay under my cal goal though I usually don't drink at all during the week (also for school and work!).

Choose what you drink carefully! That margarita sounds awesome, but a rum and diet coke would be better.  Or light beer.  One thing I'll do to cut back on drinks sometimes is get a drink and sip on it slowly, and then do an occasional shot.  The shots give you a buzz to have fun with, but you hardly drink any mixers.  Also, if you're carrying a drink and drinking out of it, people won't try to push drinks on you or make them for you.

I've also learned that I can have a good time at parties and bars with my friends without getting drunk sometimes.  At bars I'll buy one drink and sip on it, and at parties sometime I'll bring a coffee or bottle of sparkling water.  That way I have something to sip on and carry around without getting drunk or ruining my diet.  It's actually funny to watch them, and it's nice getting up the next day and knowing your the only one who doesn't feel like crap =D.

I've also found that when I drink less often I get drunk on less booze (ie, less calories!)! 3 light beers quickly and I'm ready to party!

Do you have a moe's or a qdoba? You can get burritos without a tortilla. They  put all the stuff in a bowl.  I love doing that, and depending on your topping, it can be pretty decent calorie wise.

I also agree with the Panera idea.  They have all their nutritional info on their site, and there are a lot of pretty healthy choices.

These things take time, and 12lbs is quite a lot for the time period you're talking about.  A lifestyle change should really be more about health than losing weight anyway.  We all get frustrated...wouldn't it be lovely if we could instantly be skinny? *sigh*

Original Post by sarahgordon:

guys have a higher metabolism, and especially if he's a lot taller and bigger than you, it can be tempting to fall into over-eating when you see him eat a ton.

oh I've had that problem! lol. I'm 5'6 and my boyfriend is at least 6'4 and a big guy. The calories I burn in a day is usually 1700-2200, depending on what I do, and he burns more like 2500-3500. He'll sometimes question why I'll be concerned about things, like only wanting 1 cup (8 oz) of milk or why I want low cal substitutes and I just try to explain to him that 100 calories is a lot more to me than to him! I wish I could lose weight eating 2500 calories a day!!! lol

Fortunately, he is extremely supportive of my dieting/healthy eating and tries hard to make healthy meals for me.  He's actually really proud of his healthy cooking. =)

Just let him know how happy it makes you to feel healthy (not necessarily skinny, because he probably likes you the way you are, but no one can argue with healthiness!) and maybe he'll want to get involved. When you're happy, he's happy!

I have issues with evening junk food eating too though.  I try and keep really bad stuff out of the house, like potato chips, except for special occaisions. Instead I get things like rice cakes, fruit, and sugar free jello. Even if you mess up and go crazy on them, it'll only be a couple hundred calories. If we do have something like chips or crackers and I eat them, I measure how much I actually want to eat, put it in a bowl, and leave the rest in the kitchen. That way you know how much you had, and you have to make a conscious decision to get more.  Don't know how helpful this is, but goodluck!

How much were you expecting to lose in 10 days? You can lose much more than that in that time period without doing unhealthy things (thereby losing the weight unhealthily). Keep it up and give it time. You'll make yourself crazy if you focus too hard on it. It takes some time for your body to adjust and react to diet/activity changes.  Try to think of how everyday you're getting healthier rather than how little you've lost. You'll do fine.

Weight Loss My birthday is coming up....help! Jan 13 2009

Well, I do have to voice my personal opinion that calories don't count on your birthday but...

Rum and diet cokes are good. Almost like a rum and coke, but way lower cal. I also heard a girl order a vodka with water and lime juice the other day at a bar. That's very low cal as far as drinks go, and she said it was good.

Other than that, shots!

Weight Loss "But you don't need to lose weight!" Jan 13 2009

The exact same thing happens to me. I know part of the reason isn't just because they're being polite, but because I'm already healthy, just with a little extra. Also, I carry my weight well even when I'm a bit heavy I look better than some with similar stats...we all carry our weight in different ways.

Our culture has some very funny preconceptions and double standards about diets and being overweight. If people feel like you look normal but you say you want to lose weight, they sometimes assume you have body image issues and judge or want to tell you that there's nothing wrong with you. Well, I know there is nothing wrong with me, I just sometimes want to get into a little better shape. To avoid the annoyingness, I don't tell people except good friends that I'm dieting. I just say I've already eaten, I'm not hungry, or I don't like whatever the food is, and leave it at that. It's really annoying what people think is thier business.

Foods Finding Filling low calorie Snacks Jan 13 2009

Quaker makes oatmeal-to-go bars that I love. They're really hearty and have a lot of fiber (which fills you up!).  They're larger than you're average bar, so they're 220 calories. They aren't super low cal, but they really are more filling than any other snack bar I've ever had.

Also, you can open a corner of the package, put it in the microwave for 10 seconds, and you have a delicious hot breakfast/snack!

Foods Another thread about healthy eating in college Jan 13 2009

I love rice cakes. They have great flavors, and they're pretty low cal.  Also, the 90 cal special k bars are pretty tasty. There are light cheese sticks that are good, and way healthier than the regular ones. When I want something hot I like instant oatmeal. They have low sugar flavored ones. All of these things are pretty cheap.

I get why you're looking for more foods. I prefer to eat very often in small bits all day, and then have a good sized dinner. I eat 1-5 different snacks a day, and it's easy to get bored. If I get bored, I don't eat my snacks, I get super hungry, and I eat something I probably shouldn't. Since I'm usually on campus, that means crappy food! Variety is good!

Foods A look at 1200 - 1300 diets Dec 14 2008

breakfast- oat meal or oat meal bar (quaker oatmeal-to-go!) ~200 cal or yogurt (~100 cal)

coffee, black or skim milk

snack-apple sauce cup (unsweetened, i think its better than the sugared stuff any way, and you can put cinnamon in it to make it even better) ~50 cal, or special k bars 90 cal

lunch- soup/sandwich/salad- ~300 cal

snack- rice cakes, or some kind of cracker, or light string cheese~100 cal

dinner-

usually chicken breast, grilled steak, ground turkey, or turkey sausage (3oz of meat)

one small red potato (maybe with 1 slice of cheese), cup of corn, or tortilla with the meat and veggies inside for starch

try to fill up on any veggie, usually no oil or butter, just seasonings ( i love lemon pepper on broccoli!

~400-600 cal

dessert- apple (100 cal), applesauce (50 cal), sugar-free jell-o (10 cal!), or if Ive been really good, cookies (100+ for a couple of them. the hard part is only eating 2!)

hope this helps! its always hard at first figuring out what to eat when you're trying to drop calories. There are lots of awesome foods out there that are healthy and low cal though. good luck!

yeah, you'll be fine.  When I got my wisdom teeth out in Sept. I only ate a couple hundred calories a day for a few days and not even a thousand a day for the next week because I was in such misery (and I'm used to ~2000 a day).  I was feeling pretty weak, but when I could eat real food again I recovered just fine.  You really can't hurt your metabolism from a few days of sickness-induced undereating.  I just ate a lot of soup/broth and smoothie kind of things-pretty healthy stuff.

Foods Are bagels bad for you? Jun 03 2008

It depends on how big the bagel is, and what kind of cream cheese. look up the kind of bagel you ate.

Bagels are bread. If it's whole wheat it has more nutrients. if not, its not too good for you, but it's not necessarily bad.

just look it up.
