I really appreciate everyone's responses. I do normally count the olive oil or anything else I cook with. I guess I was hoping I would not ingest as much as I thought I was actually going to - wishful thinking. Just nice to get other perspectives.

The comment about sodium boiling at 883 celcius - you must have been really paying attention in Chemistry class!

Thanks again!

Fluffydragon - thanks for your input! I don't think olive oil "magically" loses it's calories, but when you cook with a tablespoon of it, I cannot imagine you ingest the whole tablespoon when eating as there is plenty left behind.

With regard to chicken/beef stocks - I was specifically asking about the sodium content of it. I did not mean it to sound like I felt they were calorie dense even though I said it that way.

This is a site about a book that Dr. D'Adamos has written called Eat Right For Your Blood Type. I have read alot and checked out the lists of foods that are both good for you and the foods to avoid. I have RA and Fibromyalgia, both causing inflammation, and I found that if I avoid the foods that are on the avoid list for type O positive, I don't have as many flare ups. I don't believe everything I read, but am willing to try things that will help me naturally instead of taking meds.

It is a shame Fibromyalgia is not as popular in medicine as some of the other human ailments. My mother has it and until just recently, no one even really talked about it. At least now science is making an effort to learn more about this debilitating disease. Good Luck

I get the ready to eat ones from Trader Joes and the bag says 120 Calories per 1/2 cup (75g) "shelled." Based on the servings in the bag, I think it means in the out of the pod or just the edible bean. I have a food scale and the math never works out when I weigh them in the pod.

ahaha what is this steak and apple cleanse? I thought we'd heard them all by now.

Well, it is a little cleanse (one or two days) and it is aimed at ridding the body of excess water, in addition to being a foundation for a more rigourous eating routine than normal. It actually helped me to lose my "sweet tooth" - I have not desired my normal binge food since doing it. I am on day two of my more strict eating plan and have not had the desire to deviate to "bad" foods. Maybe it is a little "mental" thing too.

It is not for the purpose of quick wieght loss as most loss will only be water. I learned about it from a personal trainer freind of mine who has clients do it before starting a "clean" diet.

So..? he is 230 now, 220 in august. One can put on 10 lbs by december!

My point is that he has the idea that he is going to gain at over 1800, but he is gaining anyway.  I am acutally the same height and build as he is and even at 155, I won't gain on 1900.  We even have similar exercise patterns. There is just no way that his numbers add up to 1800-1900 calories a day. I have to agree with hammer, starvation mode is likely the culprit.

I think there is a little misunderstanding here. I have fluctuated calories since August - eating 1,800, eating 2,200, eating 2,500 etc... Most of my days since August have not been good eating days - hence the 10 - 15 gain since then. I have calculated some days to be over 3,000 calories too. I beleive in order for me to get to a goal weight of 190 - it will require very strict eating (clean) of no more than 1,800 - 2,000 a day.

I am about 6 1/2 years into my marriage and gaining and losing weight has been consistent throughout.

Figured I would add the family factor into this posting!!! Good luck to all the newlyweds and soon to be parents.

Weight Loss Can't seem to start! Oct 23 2008
07:45 (UTC)

I feel your pain - a male version of you so to speak! I get on CC almost every night to track food and the pattern is the same every time. A few good days and then when a bad day starts, it becomes two days, three days and on and on. Forget about the weekends! These have become my downfall!

On a positive note, I enjoy exercise and joined Equinox for their great equipment and classes. I try to compensate by burning 600-700 a workout 3-5 days a week and even then, I have started to slack off on exercise days. Used to get up at 6am to do HIIT on the treadmill and now find it hard to even look at the treadmill.

Mood is a huge factor. I also have other variables that dictate "falling into poor habits" over and over. A bad day at work, an argument with the wife, a day at home with my little girl (fridge is within close proximity) and a new baby due in February (beautiful time in my life, but not without consequence of losing "me" time for the gym). I need structure and regimine in order to stick to a plan. Our environment and personal predicaments dictate otherwise at times.

I hope to break the cycle for good soon and knowing there are "others" who fight the same battles gives me some level of comfort. Good luck to you!

Yoliechula - any of the Polar HRM. I currently use the F6 and it is fantastic. I don't know how many times in the past I have mistakenly hit the STOP button on a treadmill, losing all my information of the workout. A HRM gives you this added bonus of keeping your information. Obviously depending on what you like to do, Polar has all kinds of HRM and even some with GPS and distance.

Good Luck!

Health & Support Heart Rate Oct 04 2008

I am a 37 year old male, 220 lbs, 5' 9" and have about 28% body fat. I have a fairly large frame. I have been working out for years and my resting heart rate is around 40-46. I am fit "cardio" speaking - had a doctor stop a stress test, because he couldn't get my heart rate up past 154 BPM - Think running up a ladder by the time we called it quits. He seemed to feel I was very athletic.

It usually goes something like 60 BPM Walking, 90 BPM Stairs, 110 BPM 5.0 Jog, 123 BPM 7.0 Run, 140 BPM HIIT. I never get into my max range near 185 or even get close for that matter. Has to be good, right? Once I checked my RHR I got nervous and thought something was wrong.

Interesting tidbit - I had an Echo and a small trace leak was found in one of my valves. Common from what I hear. This was about a year ago. I really started to focus on more cardio and was doing HIIT quite a bit. My last Echo not too long ago couldn't even pick up the trace leak anymore - it was gone!

Moral of the story is I don't believe weight, height, bodyfat or size has anything to do with heart rate (heart size is another story as I have what is considered an enlarged heart, but I have been told it is due to my size and years of lifting weights) - Doing regular cardio can and will strengthen your cardiovascualr system and protect against disease. I agree with one of the posts here that "the less beats the heart has to pump blood at rest or work, the longer it's going to last."

There are days (most) where working out gives me a "high." Energetic, invincible, exhausted, calm are just some of the many feelings I have. I know when I am not 100% either, because my exercise suffers - such as a cold coming on.

I get all thrown off track if I don't keep to my 5 or 6 day workout routine. It keeps me feeling great throughout the week. Have you ever had THAT workout that puts you seconds away from feeling like you want to "throw up" your guts! That's a great workout!

Ankow mentioned an average heart rate of 176 - that's like my max and I think I would have to be on speed to get that high. My resting can be as low as 49 BPM - a walk gets me into the 70-80 range - a 5-6 mph jog gets me into the 110-120 range. I did a VO2max test, beat out the maximum minutes of the test and only got to 154 BPM. I also took a stress test jogging 5.6 mph at an incline just shy of a fireman's ladder (probably around 30 %) and I still only got to 158 BPM. I don't know what it would feel like to have 176 BPM, but I bet I would feel like I was in someone else's body!!!

Go whenever you can and ENJOY the endorphins that come with the territory!

Weight Loss Is It Really How Many Calories You Eat? Aug 15 2008

Sheibar80 - Thanks for all of your insightful comments. I definitely know what to eat, but you shed some light on the fruit thing, which I do not eat much of and if I do I was told to eat it early in the day! I guess what i am most confused about is the calorie intake. According to my BMR it runs about 1900-2000. If I include sedentary activities (I like to put my own in) it goes up to 2400. I am afraid to eat more than 2000 calories (I certainly do when I am not watching myself) when I am eating "clean" for fear of not losing weight.

According to http://www.phord.com/cc/ I should consume 1900 or so calories and burn 2900 calories a day to lose 2 lbs per week. Someone here said I should be eating 2700 - I feel like that would make me gain weight.

I guess what it boils down to is understanding it takes more than a day or two to institute an eating change and the scale is soon to follow. I have to eat on the weekends as clean as during the week and allow myself that yogurt maybe one night a week. It sure is frustrating as I have the exercise down, which is half the battle, but I need to get the food under control.

I appreciate everyones comments!!

Weight Loss Is It Really How Many Calories You Eat? Aug 14 2008

Original Post by kukua:

But to answer your specific question about what you eat, no, it doesn't matter what you eat in terms of actual calories.  A calorie is a unit of energy, and by eating fewer then you burn, you lose weight.  Theoretically, you can lose weight eating fast food and nothing but, as long as you burn more then you eat.

I don't know about this! I have tested this theory and when I eat 1,800 calories a day and much of it comes from sugar and carbs, I tend to gain weight. You probably have a point about sodium, because I see that from week to week on the scale.

Maybe I have not given myself a fair shot at losing the wieght. To be brutally honest I eat well during the week, track calories and all, then do not track on the weekends, eat out a lot, but still try to watch my intake. Could I be sabotaging my efforts on the weekends and eating way more then I think I am? Maybe my body just does not burn calories efficiently? Is my weekend eating really enough to counteract a 1,000+ deficit the 5 other days of the week?

Losing weight is all about burning more than you consume - you can burn the calories any way you want, and the more you burn, the more you can consume, and still lose weight.

There is nothing you have to do (except maintain a deficit) and no food that you have to avoid to lose weight - use the tools on this site to figure out how much you burn in a normal day, add in any exercise you do, and subtract between 500 to 1000 calories from that number to figure out how much to eat - as long as you are eating at least 1500 calories (for a male) you should be good.  A 500 calorie deficit gives you 1lb lost per week (a pound of fat = 3500 calories), and a 1000 deficit loses 2lb per week.

Granted, if you only eat crap and beer, you'll not be as healthy and you'll probably be more hungry than if you fill up on veggies and lean protein.

You might want to also consider weight lifting, which some studies suggest can be more effective than cardio for fat loss (helps maintain muscle, so the body doesn't start burning it).

I have to disagree with your statements in this post. I have been on this site since Feb and have lost 12 lbs. I am 5' 10" 213 lbs now and have a 1,000 deficit or more most days. At 2 lbs lost per week, I should have been at my goal weight of 190 lbs by now. My BMI is 2030 (2400 burn/sedentary) and I log in from 400 - 700 calories burned about 5-6 days a week. My calorie intake averages about 1893 every week.

I am doing everything possible (even according to what you care claiming here) and even have had many weeks where I eat "clean" (50P, 20C, 30F) with main carbs coming from veggies, protien from lean meats and fats from olive oil etc. Everyone is different and the standard formula does not work for everyone. Just my opinion.

Weight Loss BF % and Belly Fat Jun 28 2008
07:39 (UTC)

leiela: thanks for your insight! I really appreciate it and agree with your comments. My BF% went down from 38% to 28 - 30% now. However, the scale has not moved down too much, so neither has the BF%. I do weight training 3 days a week and the other days I do mountain biking and HIIT on the treadmill. I guess as the scale hopefully heads south again, the BF% will shortly follow. I still wouldn't mind swapping an even 5 lbs of muscle with 5 lbs of fat either.

Sometimes I do feel like my body composition WANTS me to be 215 forever, because this is where it likes to be. I think I read somewhere one time that there is a "comfort" level the body holds onto when we wreak havoc on it trying to lose weight.

Fitness Body Fat Percentage vs. BMI Jun 27 2008

I agree with smartjock256. For me to be at a healthy BMI, I would have to be at 145 lbs for my height of 5' 9". Maybe I can come back in my next lifetime as 145 lbs, but I am 215 lbs, with yes, some baby fat still (can you say that when you are 37). My goal is 190, because I have a fair amount of muscle on my large frame - think 46" chest! As my BMI stands now I am considered medically OBESE! Boo Hoo

Weight Loss BMR and Calorie Count Jun 27 2008

I spoke to a trainer about this today. I am 215 lbs, 5'9" , 37 yrs old and have a large build. My BMR is 2030. However, I eat between 1500 and 1900 calories a day (it varies from day to day). I keep reading about eating your BMR at a minimum and "starvation" mode.

Basically the answer I got was if I feel good and I can get through my workouts (6 times a week) with enough energy than I am fine. My goal is 190 lbs down from 245 a year ago, so I am doing well. Since I want to lose, there is no reason I can't have a calorie deficit of over 1,000, especially if I am burning the calories through exercise. I sometimes do not lose in a week, but I just think it is because I am not really sticking with the lower cals (weekends tend to be my sabatoge - eat way too many bad calories)

Does anyone else agree there is too much information out there and you have to know your own body and figure out what works for you through experimentation. You have to lose 3,500 cals to lose a pound - the rest is up to you.

I have a "cooler" black lunch bag (absconded from the Zone Delivery Diet years ago) and it keeps everything cool during the day.

Breakfast: 5-Egg White Omelette with Mushrooms (Everyday)

Snack: Green Peas and a can of Tuna

Lunch: Some Protein left over from dinner the night before (Chicken, Fish or Meat) Mixed Vegetables

Snack: Either a Premier Protein Shake and Veggies or 4oz Turkey and Veggies

Dinner: Chicken, Fish or Beef and Veggies - Soybeans or Asaparagus I also slice Roma tomatoes and sprinkle with Olive Oil, Balasmic and Italian Seasoning.

I try to eat later in the evening so I do not have much room to think about food that is going to get me into trouble. My weakness is Golden Spoon frozen yogurt with Rainbow Sprinkles. I could eat it every night.

This is my "Clean" program and expedites fat burning and weight loss and I try to keep it up seven days. If I am maintaining, I throw oatmeal and brown rice into the daily mix (eat freely on Sat and Sun) Lots of water!

I know, kind of boring and static, but there is something to be said about knowing my daily menu - wards off deviation.

Lynn - thanks so much for the insight. I have already implemented a change in diet (mostly protien and veggies for 3 weeks, then add one carb like oatmeal or brown rice the next 3 weeks). My weakness is frozan yogurt with Rainbow sprinkles - yes, RAINBOW sprinkles. Needless to say I don't feel like much of a man when I blurt it out at the store.

For weight, I always switch up my routine. However, I am now implementing HIIT on the treadmill and then Mountain Biking every few days or so. I have also increased my weight training (starting today) following the Body For Life program.

Hopefully all of this will help break my funk! I appreciate the link and thanks again!

I wrote a journal entry many weeks ago complaining about nausea. I had switched from Sweet N Low to Equal. I have about 5 packets a day (Coffee and Oatmeal) and for many days after starting Equal I would have nausea. I am pretty sure it was something in Equal, because I "tested" everything else I was putting into my body.

I now use Splenda and have tried Stevia, but Stevia has a "funky" taste to me. Splenda seems to be fine and I have not had issues since. Personally, I would love to completely get away from "fake" sugar, but then I guess if you have one vice and this is it, it probably will be okay.

I met the owner of this company back in January at a trade show and his product satisfies both issues. Good luck!

Fitness bicycling for cardio Apr 26 2008
07:55 (UTC)

I have just started incorporating biking into my routine. I live in Agoua Hills, California and we have amazing trails (mountain) and every road has a "bike" lane. During the week I ride my mountain bike on the road with "clip in" shoes to help build endurance. I do about 8 -10 miles in 45-50 minutes almost 1/2 uphill and 1/2 downhill. The downhill is a nice reward. I also incorporate "interval" training i.e. High Intensity.

I have noticed my knees are much better off on the bike, because I do run/walk some of the other days on a tredmill and the knees get a bit sore. I haven't lost the weight I would expect from riding, but I have increased endurance, leg muscles and overall fitness. I always wear a heart rate monitor and the most interesting thing is my heart rate is much more hard at work on the bike than any other exercises. I think biking is great.

I am looking forward to a 2-hour Sunday ride up on the mountain trails here (weather to be a balmy 95+ degrees) and I have my new High Sierra water hydration pak to try out! Good riding!
