Thanks for the info, bubbasgirl! I do take calcium supplements every day, so I'm not sure if that's the cause.... although I'm curious if they aren't working! I hope it's not peri-menopause. I AM going to the dr in a few weeks, so hopefully she can clue me in to what's going on.

Weight Loss Struggling to lose weight Aug 07 2009

I wouldn't put too much trust into the amount of calories the machines tell you you're burning, either! I used to go for an hour and it would say I burned 800 cal on the arc trainer for that hour. When I finally got my heart rate monitor, it told me I burned 430!! I'm going to assume the calculations with my HRM are correct!  But I'd think you weren't eating enough calories, either. I'm a female, 34, 5'6", 125 and maintain at 1600-ish cals a day. If I exercise, I usually eat 2000-2200. Good luck!!!

I say if it works for you, keep it! You might want to hold onto the receipt for 30 days or whatever just in case. My problem was just that it wouldn't give me a heart rate if I was moving at ALL, and that's pretty pointless since the whole reason you want the HRM is to tell you your heart rate WHILE exercising! Good luck! I hope it keeps working for you.

That's pretty funny, sandlizard! Well, sounds like most people have had good luck with their Polars. I think I'll just be happy if I get one where the heart rate monitor works correctly!! (and for longer than 3 weeks.) You'd think manufacturers would make the HRM's a little better... then again, everybody's just out to make a buck! Thanks for the responses!

My grandparents have been to Australia twice and LOVED it, so I definitely want to go at some point!! Yes, this trip this summer will be short & sweet - just enough really to get our feet wet with traveling outside of the US. My boyfriend just started a new job in Jan and won't have many vacation days by then, plus we don't want to spend a ton of money right now. So we might opt for something like an all-inclusive place in the caribbean or somewhere else not too far away. I forget how much time flying someplace takes up! We'll definitely be saving money and vacation days over the next year so hopefully next year we can go somewhere fabulous!!

Thanks everybody for your posts! I agree - 5 days isn't a lot of time to do a whole lot. South America or Mexico sounds like it might be more what we want for a short/cheap trip. Then we can save more money and vacation days for an extended trip next year!

Yeah, I had considered Mexico, too, but my boyfriend said he's heard about a lot going on with abductions lately. But I'm sure it just depends on where you go. The Yucatan Peninsula would probably be ok.

I usually weigh myself every morning right after peeing. I log that ONE time for the day, then at the end of the week, I take an average for the 7 days. It really helps you see how much your weight can fluctuate during the week due to water retention, etc. But at the end you get a better picture that overall you might have only gained .5 lb or so, not the 3lbs you THINK you gained! It's hard not to be so obsessed with the numbers, but I feel like this has helped me a lot! Good luck!

Health & Support Average shoulder width for a woman- what's yours? Nov 11 2008

Don't worry - I think you're more normal than I am! My shoulder width is 19" - I'm 5'6" and according to the wrist test I'm small frame. It kind of sucks because when I buy button-down shirts, the smalls fit fine EXCEPT they're too small in the shoulders of course! So I always have to go up a size. I'd be curious as to what's normal, too...

The Lounge Gas Shortage in SE States Sep 27 2008

Yeah, I'm in Athens, GA. I drove to the beach for a few days mid Sept, then on the way back I didn't have to stop for gas, thinking I would just fill up when I got back into town. Well, as I drove into town, every gas station I passed had bags over the pumps, and I thought, "What the heck is going on?" I finally got to a gas station that had gas - $3.95/gal which is cheap right now - and they had a limit of 10 gals. All week it's been that way, (prices ranging from $3.99/gal to $4.39/gal) although it seems like the past couple of days I've seen a few more gas stations with gas. HOWEVER, this weekend is the UGA/Alabama game, sold out - an extra 95,000 people coming to town. An OIL EXEC was pushing to postpone the game until we get more gas coming in, but the governor said he was just being dramatic. I've seen the big bus-motor home things heading into town and am wondering how they're going to get any gas to go home! And what WE'RE going to do once they're gone!

Fitness Less Leg? Sep 26 2008

Well, I guess I'll just live with it. I'd rather have big muscular legs and keep exercising than sitting on my butt not doing anything and then not be able to eat much for fear of getting fat again! Thanks for the comments....

Well, I didn't really lose it FAST, but I guess it was just a realistic goal of losing the final 10 lbs in 6 months. I logged pretty much EVERYTHING I put in my mouth every day - stuck to around 1400 cals per day. Then any exercise I did I logged into my activity log. I would usually walk about 50 min 3-4 times a week then go to the gym on weekends. My calories from eating and alcohol went up to about 2000 on weekends, but I would spend a lot of time at the gym on those days, so it pretty much evened out. So you can certainly have cheat days here & there, but make sure you exercise regularly. Also, upping your calorie intake here & there keeps your metabolism from stabilizing. Good luck!!!

Maintaining I need a hug from my fellow CC maintanence members..... Jun 30 2008

We all need a splurge day every once in awhile!! I know how the guilt is, though. But you sound like you have it totally under control normally, so don't worry about last night. I do the same thing - during the week I'm always very strict and log EVERYTHING. Weekends are a different story! I don't go too overboard, but pizza, fries and alcohol usually figure in somewhere. I figure I watch what I eat and work out a lot during the week so I can have some fun on the weekends! Just don't make it a habit.  ;)

Maintaining Maintenance Confusion - How many calories? Jun 29 2008

I'm right there with you! I'm finally averaging right around 125 so I decided to switch to maintenance mode today. It told me, too, that I would need 1200 to maintain which I know is crazy! So I'm just going to try and move my calories up to somewhere between 1600-1800 and see how that goes. It's funny, though, I feel like I've been in 'weight loss mode' for so long I'm not sure how to maintain! Good luck on your maintenance!!!

Health & Support How to help my mom May 27 2008

Kristicro is right - there really isn't much YOU can do. It sucks because really the only one that can change the situation is your mom herself. Maybe instead of everybody telling her what she NEEDS to do, she might respond better to positive feedback? Next time you see her eating the right foods (if you do OR don't see that she's lost a few pounds) tell her she looks good, ask if she's lost some weight, things like that. Maybe ask her to go for a walk, that way you can get her to at least exercise a little. It's hard watching other people go through this when YOU'VE done so well, and you know how to make it happen! Not sure if that helped at all, but GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Weight Loss How many times do you step on the scale to get your weight? May 12 2008
21:49 (UTC)

My scale tends to give me different readings most of the time! Sometimes by just a .1 of a pound, other times by a whole pound. So some mornings I'll just get on once if I like the first number... other times I'll get on 2 or 3 times and see what numbers are the same. And then my boyfriend's scale always says I'm 2 or 3 pounds less than mine does! They're both digital, different kinds though go figure. I DO weigh every day, but I keep a log and take a weekly average so the little highs and lows every day don't freak me out.

Weight Loss Gaining 2 pounds...water weight or the metabolism ruined?? May 12 2008
21:06 (UTC)

I think the main thing is, don't stress over small day-to-day fluctuations. There are many factors that can make the scale be up or down by a couple of pounds every day - if you drank a lot of water, if you haven't gone to the bathroom yet (bm), etc. Sometimes I'll even notice the scale says I'm up 2 or more pounds if I just had a more dense dinner (pasta) but DIDN'T go over my max daily calories. Try to weigh yourself at the same time every day - I weigh myself every day and write it down and then take an average at the end of the week. That way the day to day fluctuations don't bother me as much and I'm able to see a steady "average" of the real weight I'm gaining or losing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not too far from my goal weight, so I guess I'll stick it out until I get there and then up the calories to maintain. At least it's almost summer, right?   :)

Snacks are always a good idea. Nuts or fruit would be great just as a little something that will keep you going 'til bedtime, that way you're still keeping it healthy, too!

I actually went through my closet and drawers and am FINALLY going to get rid of all the shorts and skirts that are too big. I hate to do that - I really like some of those things. I'm nervous to get rid of the stuff, though, 'cause I keep thinking I'll gain the weight back - I've always kind of yo-yo'd. But a good friend of mine gave me good advice - GET RID OF THE TOO BIG CLOTHES! That way I won't even give myself an option of gaining weight - if the smaller clothes start feeling tight, it's time to watch what I eat again. The main problem right now is money... I really don't have the money to buy any clothes right now!

Birth control pills for men, eh? Maybe I'M not the one that needs to be looking into alternate forms of birth control!  ha....  Thanks for the tip. I appreciate what you're saying, scjf! I do love my boyfriend very much - I know he's totally the one for me. I guess I would question things more if I only felt this way with him, but it's like I just have no desire to be sexual at ALL - with myself, either. I don't even look at guys thinking they're attractive and feel things stirring up inside, you know? Well, I go to the gyno next month, so hopefully I'll figure something out! I'll let you know what comes of it!

I wish birth control wasn't so complicated! There are SO many different kinds out there you'd think there would be at least ONE that worked great for each person! If only it didn't screw up your cycle switching between different kind of pills. (sigh) Thanks for the comments, ladies. Maybe one day they really WILL come out with a pill that doesn't kill your sex drive. Of course by that time, I'll probably be menopausal!  ;)

I'm in the same situation! I'm 5'6", 2 years ago I weighed 157. Last year at this time I was 140, now I'm averaging 135. I would like to lose 10 more pounds, and it's just going SO slow. I walk 50 min 3 or 4 days a week, and do about 2 hours of cardio plus arm weights at the gym 2 days a week. I try to stick to 1400 calories a day, but the weight is just sticking. Guess I'm in a plateau, also...?
