Hi. Can I join your 30-day goal thing? I'm on binge-free day five (purge-free day nine) and I think it's going to be a struggle! I need to keep this up because in a couple of days I'm going home for three weeks and that is a huge trigger for me and there's so much more temptation (dried fruit, nuts, bread, peanut butter, semolina, sugar, oats, cake ingredients - all my favourite binge foods, basically!). If I've been binge-free for over a week prior to going home then I know that I'll be so much more motivated to continue during the Easter break. SO ... I'm not going to have a binge, I'm going to go for a walk (with no money on me!) and then go to the library. And I'm going to come off this site ... because thinking about food really isn't beneficial!

I feel such a lot stronger having reasoned with myself like that! I hope you people have a great, successful day. If not, I hope that you're able to move on and not let it ruin your hard work. Good luck!

I don't like any milk chocolate, especially junkie candy bars. Dark chocolate, at least 70% cacao, is the only chocolate for me.

Here in England I have discovered one of the best chocolate companies, Montezuma's. They make heavenly chocolate!

I like that as well. The chilli-flavoured one is lovely. You'd think that it wouldn't work, but it always hits the spot.

Vegetarian 500-calorie vegan dinner menus? Mar 11 2008

  1. Rice, dal, vegetable curry
  2. Rice, vegetable and tofu stir-fry
  3. Spag bol (TVP, mushroom, onion, tomato) or pasta with lentil sauce
  4. Large salad with nuts and seeds
  5. Bulgur wheat, cous cous, rice or pasta with various beans and various veggies
  6. Chilli or ratatouille with baked sweet potato, small salad
Those are the kind of things I usually eat (I like carbs, as you can see!) and my tea is nearly always under 600kcal. It's about portion control more than what you eat, in my opinion!

Original Post by jndimaria:

what you probably need to do is retrain your stomach and metabolism. give it a good 300 cal meal for breakfast lunch and dinner, and take snacks along with you. it's best to eat 5-6 times a day... although sometimes i eat 8 times! if you're on the go a lot, take things that are easy to eat like protein bars or the carrots or fruits (as you mentioned).

That is what I try to do! That's the problem. I'll eat all my snacks and meals in one go. It's horrible! Yesterday wasn't so bad, but today it's 11:26 and I'm already at my calorie goal  and feeling disgustingly full. Annoying! Thanks anyway.

I'm vegan ... so obviously dark, but I'll leave that out of it! It's weird ... if I'm overindulging in chocolate for emotional reasons (I'm a girl, OK!) then it's got got got to be dark, but if it's the occasional bar as a treat I do sometimes prefer the soy alternative to milk chocolate (full of saturated fat ...) just for the smoothness and sweetness and I probably enjoy that more than I enjoy eating dark, but I have to be in the mood. Mmm ... I don't want to make this decision lightly ... but I'd say dark is my favourite.

Green & Black's Maya Gold is my favourite, actually!

I was going to bring up the Peter Kay thing as well - I'm not really a fan, but that had me in stitches. Anyone who's ever dunked a Rich Tea and a Hob Nob (which is everyone, surely?!) can't fail to be amused. Hob Nobs and Aero, though? Is that British cuisine? LOL.

Have you ever had rooibos tea? You say you hate normal tea, but this is 1) not tea! and 2) not as bitter. You can drink it brewed and then chilled and you could probably add sweetener, if you wanted to. It's much, much better for you than processed "tea" drinks and is calorie-free.

giasbash6260, don't you ever treat yourself? It doesn't have to be unhealthy ... a few dates, a banana, some houmous? LOL. Each to one's own, I guess! I eat a lot of vegetables, too (always have), but I don't think I could live with your diet!

I've always hated salt. Strange, actually ... since trying to eat healthier I've actually increased my tolerance for it. I can now eat soy sauce and stuff which I previously thought were way too salty. The other week I went over 2000mg for the first time evvvveeer.

Reading these is really interesting

Weighing yourself after eating way too much won't give you any real idea of how much you weigh ... so it's pointless. It's very unlikely that you ate enough to gain more than 1-2lbs, so I really wouldn't worry about your weight.

I am NOT condoning fasting because I know NOTHING about it (medically) but, in my experience of it ... it can be a good way to clear your mind etc. and I've also found it effective in putting an end to periods of overeating. On the other hand, it can leave you very weak and very miserable (passing out in the bath and bursting into tears because I couldn't find the book I was looking for in a shop, for example!).

Butternut squash soup is especially comforting and warming!

I make my low-cal hot chocolate by mixing a couple tsp unsweetened cocoa powder with 50ml soya milk and then topping it up with boiling water (40kcal in total), but I think most people use the packaged sachets (some of these are only 25kcal).

- A glass of wine
- A calorie-dense treat - a few squares of anti-oxidant-rich dark chocolate?!
- Nuts/seeds
- Dried fruit
- A glass of milk/juice
- Add avocado to salad
- Ditch the diet products
- Cook your vegetables in olive oil

 ???

I'm sorry, but there really isn't any excuse ...

Thanks. No, I don't like living like it! And ... no, it isn't really binging (I do have big problems with that, so I know the difference!), but it also isn't eating normally. The trouble is that I have to prepare all the food for the day in the morning and on days when I don't go straight out after breakfast I'll just eat it all on the trot. I know it sounds as if I simply lack self-control (which I do!), but it's worse than that ... somehow. Maybe it is a sort of binge? Only it's not enough calories for that, really ... and it's too ... slow?, enjoyable? jndimaria, like you say, the fact that I'm hungry from not having eaten for a long time must make it worse, too. I guess I'll just have to make sure that I go straight out after breakfast each morning. The worst that can happen is that I get more uni work done or have a nice walk/go swimming. Hahh.

That's interesting. I knew that something like that was true (hence the thread), but I thought that the correlation between skipping breakfast and being overweight was more down to people coming in from work starving hungry and then pigging out.

Believe me, I don't want to continue eating like this. Eating until you're uncomfortably bloated in the morning and then being kept awake by your hunger at night obviously isn't ideal.

Anyway. I don't want to mess up my metabolism any more than it already is. Thank you for your info!

Thanks. That's very helpful.

It is more of a lifestyle thing than a one-off, but I really can't seem to do anything about it! I know it's ridiculous. (BTW, today was over 1200 and had an OK amount of protein and fat. I know it wasn't really "balanced", but that's not the point ... it's the fact that I ate it all at once that was bothering me.)

Foods Favorite Type Of Protein... Feb 27 2008

I can't choose just one either:

  1. Nuts and seeds (not the best source of protein, but definitely my favourite! I eat them on their own or in muesli/porridge or salads)
  2. Beans (usually in my main evening meal - sooooooooooooooooo many options here that I couldn't possibly list them, but chick peas in houmous, lentil and vegetable dal and butter beans added to salad are a few favourites)
  3. Tofu (in sandwiches, in stir-fries) and other soya products (milk in drinks, yoghurt as a snack, TVP in pasta sauce)
  4. Grains (bread, oats, rice, pasta etc. - not perceived as a protein source by a lot of people, but provide a significant amount of protein [and pleasure] in my diet)

I agree that people shouldn't do it. It's very unhelpful and inconsiderate. Some people just seem to be attention-seeking rather than anything else, which is especially annoying. On the other hand, there are going to be "triggers" everywhere you look, both online and in the real world, and I think that part of recovery is accepting that and overcoming it - at the end of the day, it's down to you.

Weight Loss Snaking Feb 25 2008

It's expected that you'll feel hungry when loosing weight - you're taking in less calories than your body needs, that's the point!

If you think that snacking will stop you from binging, then I'd go ahead. 1500 really isn't a lot of calories, especially if you're doing exercise, so adding 200 calories or so a day in snacks shouldn't make you gain weight. Grapes are a bit of a hazard for me, but baby carrots, sugar snap peas, raw broccoli, cherry tomatoes, berries and so on are great "gap-fillers".
