Weight Loss For those who have managed to lose 20LBS before.. questions.. Dec 01 2008

It took me about 4 months to lose 20 pounds.  I took short walks every day, but mostly focused on my food intake, which was 1200 calories.  I was very disciplined and never went over this amount.  I stopped eating in restaurants except for maybe once every two weeks (and saved lots of money!) and even then, I planned my entire eating around that meal so I wouldn't go much over 1600 calories, even though I was eating out.

For the record, I am 5'3, in my 30's and currently weigh 134 (after Thanksgiving).

I had a salt-free rice cake with sunflower butter on it (like peanut butter).  The rice cake is 35 calories and the tablespoon of sunflower butter was 85 calories.   I agree with maru29, sounds like maybe a different activity other than running would be good to look at, too.  Even just fast walking with light weights in your hand has huge benefits.

Fitness HIIT Heart rates? Sep 25 2008

Yes, after 10 minute warm up/cool down and 10 30second/90second intervals, I was all wobbly when I got off the elliptical!

Do you think 30/90 intervals are ok, or should I do 30/60?

Thank you!!!!!  I was thinking, jeez, I don't know if I can keep my heart rate at 170 for 30 seconds!!!!!

So, it's ok that I don't drop down too much during the low intensity part?

Obviously you do HIIT, I would be curious as to how often you do it, and what your time intervals are?  And, it is normally to feel "tingly" for a couple hours after completing the workout?

Answers from everyone would be helpful :-)  Thanks!!!!

Fitness Question about those who have the wii fit... Sep 18 2008
02:20 (UTC)

I am in decent shape and use the Wii fit on the days I don't do the elliptical.  It is my "ligher" work out day, although I do agree, with the stepping as well as the free step, you do get the heart going!

There are also strength exercises that I like a lot, and the Wii fit "knows" if you are not doing it right (and it tells you)!

My husband and I do the yoga a few times a week together (he uses the board, I just use the floor).

All and all, I think it is a great supplement to other workouts you are doing, or on its own it has a lot of value.

Foods What's cookin?! Need some dinner suggestions... Sep 18 2008

I made pesto and pasta last night.  There is a good recipe for low cal pesto on the recipe section.  Tonight, we are having a crockpot beef roast with some potatos and a salad.  Oh, and I made Jambalaya with chicken sausage the other night, it turned out good (crockpot) with only 250 cals per serving!

All this talk about dinner is making me hungry :-)

Nakedsoul, sweetie, you need to eat more.  I saw your photos, and you are not seeing what everyone else sees.    It is not good for your body to only eat 500 calories, you need at least 1200 per day, minimum to live.

The last post has some great points!  I tend to gain right in the middle, which makes it hard to find clothes that fit well, never mind that annoying muffin top!

It is easier said than done, I am sure most people are still working on it, but the best thing you can do when you look at your body is focus on what is pretty, not what you don't like (easier said than done, I know).

I am no expert on eating disorders, but my guess is that your body is now trying to "hold on to" any food it gets, which is why you see the weight gain.  I would imagine it will take some time for your body to adjust to your new way of eating.  In the meantime, eat healthy and get healthy!  Consider working out a few times a week as you recover, as this will help build muscle, too.  In your pictures, you are good looking guy, and will be even better looking with 30+ more pounds on ya!

I think we need to get out of the habit of thinking "bad" foods.  I was on Jenny Craig a couple of years ago (lost 20 lbs) and this is one thing they stress.  Have pizza, have ice cream....or whatever you like, just don't eat the entire pizza or carton of ice cream.  You can have a little bit of anything (i.e. vegie pizza) you like, just don't overdo it.

When we say we can't have the "bad" foods we like, it is much more likely when we get to our goal weight, we will binge and end up gaining weight because we have been missing out.

I say, go for it, eat a little pizza or whatever you love, but limit the amount you eat (i.e. two slices).

As another post mentioned, eating out is more than providing nutrients to our body, it is also a social experience, so while you may want to say no to your husband some of the time, it is also heathly to say yes a lot of the time, too.

I love the Wii fit!  I can't say that it is helped me lose weight, but I do feel better, stronger.  It also puts exercise in the forefront of my mind-and makes it fun.  I also think more about my posture since I started playing it.

Health & Support IBS? May 14 2008

My thoughts on this, since I, like many experience IBS:

--Try accupunture.  It really helped me with stress management-and helps me to "go"  It is covered by many health insurance companies.

--Fiber, daily, at night.  I take the chewable sugar free "Fiber choice" type

--Lots of water

--Wake up early enough so you are not in a rush in the morning.

Good luck to you and everyone else-IBS is manageable yet still challenging!

Health & Support What to do when you've lost your period... and *don't* want it back? Jan 29 2008

First, I understand how you feel about not wanting to have kids.  Everyone told me that I would change my mind.  I am 34 now and haven't.  As a result, I have to use birth control pills, and I don't have my period any more!  Not even spoting after the first couple of months.  It is the best of both worlds-don't have to worry about having kids AND don't have to deal with the period.

For those posting about "periods aren't that bad," please keep in mind you don't know what kinds of periods she has......and I have seen them very, very bad-not able to get out of bed for 4 days-bad.  So I think it best we don't judge her for not wanting a period (we all hate it, right?) and try to provide any advice we can as *older* women!

The company adds more sugar to make it taste ok with less fat.  As long as you are not having a lot of other sugars, it should be ok.   I personally, like them.  They seem to help me lose weight, because I get my sweet tooth satisfied.
