| Foods | What kind of yogurt do you eat? | Sep 02 2009 07:27 (UTC) |

I love yoplait light thick and creamy yogurt. I know it is processed and has artifical sweetners...blah, blah, blah...but I am 105 pounds and have maintained my weight for a year and a half eating yoplait light and other processed "EVIL" foods. So eat what you like, so long as it fits in with your calorie count. People on here are very judgemental about processed foods, but they haven't killed me yet... |

| Foods | F/F Donuts, Muffins, Cookies- Too good to be true? | Sep 02 2009 07:24 (UTC) |

I've ordered the products from that site, so I thought I would give you my opinion. I ordered that fat-free sampler that came with muffins, donuts, and cookies. The muffins were good, similar to regular muffins. The donuts were good, but I could see how some people might think they taste too diety..but I really liked the Chocolate with sprinkles and the Cinnamon glazed. The cookies were not very good at all...I would not recommend them. I would recommend checking out Chatila's Bakery, if you are looking for low-calorie breakfast treats. They have muffins that are sweetened with agave nectar for 120-130 calories apeice and sugar-free donuts sweetened with splenda, I believe for 100 calories each. I personally find their products to be superior to others I have tried. As far as making your own goes, try making muffins with prepared muffin mix and a can of diet soda. I had great results making Fiber One banana nut muffins with a can of diet lemon-lime soda instead of the eggs/oil/ect. |

| The Lounge | Annoying question about Should I try a Relationship | Aug 26 2009 08:00 (UTC) |
11 |
I had to comment here, because I've seen so many threads about girls feeling like they have to be in a relationship and if they aren't there is something wrong with them. Why can't it be normal to not want a relationship. I'm 23 and I too don't like relationships. Don't be in a relationship just because you think that is what you are supposed to do. Guys always think that I have been hurt or something because I don't want anything serious, but honestly I just get bored and annoyed when I am obligated to hang out with someone all the time...I have my own life...I'll call when I feel like it. Also, I don't get the exclusivity factor. I think alot of people feel this way, hence why so many people cheat in relationships. (By the way, I hate the word "cheat" when used in that context.) I think relationships are unnatural. I'm picky as hell, but I'm not going to be attracted to just one person. Basically, people are jealous and insecure, and can't handle someone they like being attracted to anyone else. I know I'm going to get attacked for this post, but I had to express my opinion. Not everyone wants the same thing out of life. I don't see why it is socially acceptable to be gay, bi-sexual, trans-gendered, etc...yet no one can accept the fact that there might be people out there who don't want an exclusive relationship with one person. Disclaimer: I know the aforementioned groups are discriminated against by some people; however no one accepts that anyone could ever WANT to be single. If you don't want a relationship, don't be in one. You're young, enjoy it while you can. -Kat |

I don't know if this would be pumpkin overload for you, but I like to make a pasta sauce with a little bit of canned pumpkin, chicken broth, sage and salt. It's really good over pasta with a tiny bit of strong flavored cheese, like Romano, sprinkled on top. I have also made pumpkin ravioli with tomato sauce. I saute some mushrooms and peppers with garlic and a little bit of plain tomato sauce. This is especially good if you add some proscuitto as well. |

| Foods | Chatila's Sugar-free Muffins | May 05 2009 06:44 (UTC) |

I'm back with an exciting update on the sugar-free muffin front.... I was browsing the Linda'sdietdelites.com website, and found the following regarding Chitila's sugar-free new generation muffins. (Linda's is a distributor of the brand.) "Recently, the bakery switched to Agave sweetener and as a result increased the calories on these mufins. Fortunately, after only a couple weeks of baking the new version they have decided to continue to bake the low calorie, original version for Linda's Diet Delites only. So, don't worry, your muffins will be fully available soon. We will be restocked in all the flavors by the end of the week!" I'm so excited. I tried to make my own muffins but they don't have the same wonderful crumbly, yet moist texture as the Chatila's ones do. I however, only used soy and all-purpose flour, not almond flour. I think if I want to re-create the Chatilas muffins, I will have to purchase pastry flour, almond flour and xanthan gum, all ingredients present in the muffins, which might cost me more than just purchasing them online. Oh well, I am purchasing tons and tons of muffins come the end of the week!!! |

I'm so glad to find some fellow artificial sweetener fans on here who feel my pain over the loss of our beloved sugar-free baked goods. I feel like I never want to post on here because people are always getting attacked for their food choices. I like processed foods...so what.. I too have been searching desperately for alternative muffins. I hate Vitamuffins..they are possibly the most overrated food item ever, so that's not an option. I found a couple of really, really expensive sites that sell sugar-free muffins. (I used to order from DiabeticFriendly.com. Their muffins were really expensive at $12.99 for 6! I considered ordering from them again until I found out that they are a franchise of Chatilas.) I also found a site that sells fat-free muffins that supposedly have around 100 calories a muffin..it is called SimplyScrumptious.com. I ordered their fat-free sample pack. The donuts are good, but they are different than the Chatilas ones. They are glazed instead of filled. I could see how some people would think they taste diet-y though. I haven't tried the muffins yet. I'll let you know how they are. I think Chatila's really messed up here. Their muffins were delicious and not at all diet-y tasting as they were. They were better than any sugar-sweetned or sugar-free muffins I've tried. They claim Agave will improve the flavor, but the flavor was amazing as is...I believe the proper sentiment here is "Leave well-enough alone" Sigh.. I'm going to experiment with making my own sugar-free muffins with soy and almond flours. I'll let you guys know if I can re-create a muffin similar to what Chatila's sold. |

| Foods | Zone Bars | Jul 18 2008 19:28 (UTC) |

I eat zone bars everyday too. I love the dark chocolate ones. I'm 5'1" and 104 lbs, and I don't gain weight from eating them...However, I think I may go broke eating all these expensive nutrition bars all the time. A calorie is a calorie, as long as you don't eat more than you burn you shouldn't gain weight. Zone bars may contain sugar, but they are high in protein and I think they are low glycemic, meaning that they don't cause a spike in blood sugar levels. If you are concerned about sugars or artificial sweeteners, you might want to try LaraBars. I like the apple pie (180 calories) and cherry pie (190 calories). They also have other flavors with between 200 and 220 calories a bar. LaraBars contain no sugars or artificial sweeteners, just fruit and nuts. They also make some chocolate flavored bars called Jocolat, which also contain cocoa, and about 190 calories a bar. Also, as a sidenote, depending on your height and weight, 1200 calories a day might be too low. 1200 is the minimum calorie intake. For example, I'm petite, but I eat 2800 calories a day to maintain my weight because I am very active. |

| Foods | "Low Fat" Muffins? | Jul 08 2008 08:34 (UTC) |

Muffins that you get at a bakery are usually rediculously large. Look at the size of those muffins compared to the ones you make at home. Therefore, even if they aren't loaded with fat and/or sugar, they are going to have pretty many calories. I personally wasn't too thrilled with VitaMuffins. However, I really love the sugar-free muffins from Chatila's sugar-free bakery. They have a bunch of flavors that you can order on-line. Supposedly the New Generation muffins have 80-90 calories each. However, the nutrition facts are based on a 75 gram muffin. When I weighed my muffins, they were actually around 90 grams. However, this still comes out to about 110 calories per muffin...You could eat 4 of these for less calories than the Dunkin Donuts muffin. |

| Foods | Good Snacks under 200 calories | Jul 08 2008 08:27 (UTC) |

dLuna Bars 180-190 calories each. My favorite flavors are: Carmel Nut Brownie, Chocolate Raspberry, Iced Oatmeal Raisin, and any of the Luna Sunrise Bars. Luna also makes Mini Snack Bars that I found at Target. They snack size bars have only 80 calories each, but they are pretty small. Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cinnamon Coffee Cake Bar--160 calories Lara Bars: I just tried the Apple pie flavor this morning...it was awesome. And Lara Bars are all natural...just fruit and nuts, not sugar or artifical sweetener. The Apple Pie flavor has 180 calories and the Cherry Pie flavor has 190 calories. Zone Dark Chocolate Bars: These are so good. I love the Double Dark Chocolate (190 calories) and the Strawberry (180 calories). Atkins Caramel Dark Chocolate Crunch Bars...these don't have that icky protein-bar taste that alot of the Atkins bars have. They are 160 calories each. 2 Slices of Lite Wheat Bread and 1 fat-free Cheddar Cheese single--A 100 calorie grilled cheese sandwich. Kashi TLC cookies (130 calories)..the Dark Chocolate Oatmeal is delicious. 1/2 cup fiber one cereal (60 calories) and 1/4 cup Unsweetened Almond Breeze (10 calories). Plain fiber one cereal is actually really tasty. I just tried it for the first time a few days ago, and I love it! Sometimes I like to have a small bowl of fat-free reddi whip for dessert. 40 grams is just 40 calories. Combine that with a cup of strawberries for a dessert under 100 calories. Skinny Cow Sundae Cones are really good. They are 150 calories each, and they have that big hunk of chocolate in the bottom of the cone. Dannon Light and fit yogurt has only 60 calories. Sometimes I like to mix some in with 3/4 of a cup of Kashi Go Lean (110 calories). 3 Trader Joes Light String Cheese sticks--180 calories 1 Trader Joes Whole Wheat Mini Croissant--130 calories 3 Trader Joes Turkey Meatballs--150 calories 4 Trader Joes Chicken Drummettes (like chicken nuggets) (150 calories) and 1/4 cup Heinz reduced sugar ketchup (20 calories) 1 1/3 cups of frozen peas--140 calories 2 slices lite wheat bread with 1 tbsp Better-N-Peanut Butter and 2 tbsp sugar-free jelly (140 calories) 2/3 cup of Cheerios Snack Mix--120 calories This stuff is really good. It's just like Chex Mix, except that it has Cheerios also. 1/2 cup of black beans--120 calories Newton Fruit Crisps--100 calories per pack. These might not be the healthiest thing ever, but they are a pretty good size for the calories, and they kinda taste like pop tarts...reminds me of being a kid. South Beach Diet Cereal Bars--140 calories each 30 grams of Dry Roasted Salted Almonds--170 calories 1/2 cup of Egg Beaters, 1 Laughing Cow Cheese Wedge, Salt, Pepper and Mushrooms (120 calories) Banana Smoothie: 1 small banana (90 calories) 1/2 cup skim milk (45 calories), and a sprinkle of cinnamon and four ice cubs. Combine these in a blender for a refreshing treat. You can also experiment with different flavors. Sometimes I like to use coconut extract in my smoothie. Strawberries and Chocolate Syrup are other good additions to this recipe. 2 Pillsbury Reduced Fat Breadsticks--140 calories 1 Trader Joes Chicken Sausage 100-180 calories depending on the flavor. Some of my favorites are Spinach and Fontina (140 calories) and Fire Roasted Red Pepper (120 calories) and Mushroom Asiago (180 calories).

| The Lounge | Breast implants - Do they look good or not? | May 02 2008 20:53 (UTC) |

As a young fit 21 year old with breast implants I wanted to comment on this one. I have never had babies, cancer, ect. I went from a small c to a dd. I got breast implants because I wanted to be more confident in myself. Now when I got out to the bars I can feel like I look good and I can have a good time. I didn't do this to seek approval from guys. Trust me, I got plenty of male attention before my surgery. But the difference is that before when I guy would tell me I was beautiful, I would think...yeah right, you're so full of it. Because when you don't feel good about yourself, it doesn't matter what other people tell you, its not going to make you feel any better. Is it selfish to get breast implants? Maybe. But people spend money on extravagant things to make themselves happy all the time. Why is it any more frivilous to buy boobs than it is to spend thousands on a new Lexus or a luxury vacation? Life is too short. People should be allowed to do whatever they want to make themselves happy, provided they aren't hurting anyone else in the process. Another point: For those of you who say that it is only okay to get breast implants because you've have children or a masectomy, that is like saying that you should only be able to workout if you are clinically obese. On the jealousy topic. I think that alot of naturally larger breasted women resent the idea of implants because it enables any woman to go and level the playing field. I think that women who are truly confident in themselves would not care about other women getting implants. I feel like large-breasted women have never experienced what it is like to have smaller breasts. Therefore, they really have no business having an opinion on the matter. If it doesn't affect you personally, why do you care? For those of you who are considering surgery, yes there are risks. But I think it is a gross exageration for certain people in here to say that plastic surgery is "mutilating your body." The truth is that it is a relatively simple outpatient proceedure. The only surgery I've ever had is plastic surgery, and I have to say that it was much less scary that I thought it would be. You'll be in some pain for a few days...but nothing major. I was driving within a week. And you can usually exercise again within 6 weeks. Complications do exist, a friend of a friend of mine got capsular contracture (formation of scar tissue around the implant which causes it to feel hard). However, you have to weigh the costs and the benefits. To me it was worth it. And I have had no complications. My breasts don't interfere with my ability to exercise. I run and use the elliptical every day. So, to conclude this I just want to say that surgery has given me so much confidence. I applaud those of you who can be confident with yourselves just the way you are. But you don't have the right to criticize people for their personal decisions. |

| Foods | Malitol; what is it? | Apr 27 2008 14:47 (UTC) |
17 |
Malitol is what is known as a "sugar alcohol." It is a sweetener commonly found in sugar-free baked goods, ice creams, candies, ect. Malitol contains only 2.1 calories per gram as opposed to 4 calories per gram in sugar. I'm not all that familiar with sugar alcohols and what they actually are. But I'm pretty sure they aren't transfat, since fat contains 9 calories per gram. If you want more information, you can try googling sugar alcohols. I hope this was helpful. -Kat |

Thanks everyone for all the positive comments. I actually talked to my dad. He sent me an email saying he was concerned about me. I told him I weight 103 and that I am eating. He apologized for upseting me and said he was just overly concerned. I really think my parents feel guilty about having ignored my eating disorder the first time. I was 15 at the time, I'm 21 now. I have been doing weight training for awhile now, but I think I will try to increase the amount of weight I am lifting and eat more protein. Thank you all again for the support. It really is encouraging. Now I'm off to study for final exams. Comprehensive finals..ugh... -Kat |

See, I don't think you guys understand how intensely I workout on this thing. I pretty much am dying by the end of my workout. 11.5 mph is really fast. Like I said, people are literally amazed at my pace. I also run at 7.5 mph for 1/2 hour at a max incline of 6, minimum incline of 1. I can run at this pace and incline for 1 hour with no problem. I'm thinking cc probably thinks a fast pace is around 8 mph since I have never seen anyone besides myself go much faster than that. There is a site where you can calculate the calories you burn on the Precor EFX by entering your strides per minute. However, the strides per minute number only goes up to somewhere around 180. I am somewhere above 300 strides per minute (I probably average around 320), so I can't even calculate my calorie burn. The term "vigorous effort" is just so vague. I wish they would define exactly what that means, you know? Thanks for the help. -Kat |

Thanks for the help guys. I did try changing the batteries, which helped somewhat, but I think I need to buy a scale that won't fluctuate so much. Skaredsic, does the Chefmate scale measure in grams? Someone on the amazon customer reviews stated that it only measures in ounces. The ability to measure in grams, as well as ounces is really important to me. Thanks again. -Kat |

| Maintaining | Maintaining---Replacing fat with muscle??? | Apr 02 2008 07:35 (UTC) |
|
Hello, First of all, lets clear this up....you can't replace fat with muscle. You can shrink your fat cells and you can build up your muscles, but one cannot turn into the other. Turning fat to muscle would be like turning lead into gold. To lose fat you need to do cardio. If you are burning 1900, you need to eat fewer than 1900 to lose weight. Eating 1700-1800 you should lose weight, but it will be slow going, with only a 100-200 calorie deficit a day. The more intensely you exercise, the faster you will see results. However, be sure not to cut your calories back too far, otherwise your body could go into starvation mode. Hope this helps. -Kat |

Do you have an Aldi near where you live? They have their own brand of low-fat foods called Fit and Active. I like their yogurts and frozen entrees. They also have a great selection of canned and fresh fruits and veggies for way less than grocery store prices. Trader Joes is also a good place to go to buy healthy foods at low prices. They are not as low-cost as Aldi, but their prices are better than the grocery store. |

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have tried almost all kinds of "diet" desserts. I am just looking for some variety. I'm sick of plain chocolate, ice cream, pudding, ect. I may try the Smart Ones desserts, even though alot of you say they are small. What is small in terms of serving size is after all pretty subjective. On another note, I just bought some Kashi TLC oatmeal chocolate chip cookies today. They are really good. It is pretty hard to find tasty packaged cookies. I also enjoy Sorbee sugar-free soft-baked chocolate chip cookies. Thanks again for the responses. -Katie |

| Foods | crystal light and the negative effect on weight loss. | Feb 17 2008 06:46 (UTC) |

| I am so sick of hearing how artificial sweetener makes you gain weight. I am a size zero or sometimes a one, and I drink tons of diet soda and eat tons of artificially sweetened foods. They are much better for weight-loss than foods containing sugar. Remember....real sugar = tons of calories. One cup of sugar has 720 calories, one cup of splenda has only 96, but it is ultimately up to the individual which choice to make. They only justifiable argument I could see for artificial sweetener making a person gain weight is if it increases their cravings for sugar and then they go out and eat sugary foods. But if you have the willpower to avoid sugary foods, then it shouldn't be a problem. | |||
| Foods | pasta, potatoes, bread-where do they fit in a 1400 calorie diet, I'm starving without them! | Feb 11 2008 06:48 (UTC) |

I know 1400 seems like so few calories, and believe me I've been there. I am now maintining, and exercising like a feind and can eat closer to 1800. However, I can offer you some tips. As far a bread goes. Buy Schwebels Light Wheat Bread. It has 35 calories a slice. You can make a turkey sandwhich with 2 slices of bread, a slice of fat-free cheddar (30 calories), and 2 oz of turkey (50 calories) and mustard for only 150 calories. Also, if you make burgers (veggie or otherwise) buy Schwebels light buns which only have 90 calories apiece. I have heard of these noodles called Shiritaki noodles. They are made from tofu, I think and only have 20 calories in a whole bag. I don't know if they are any good, because I have never tried them. However, there is a website called Hungry-girl.com that has a few recipes using these noodles. You might want to check out that website. The girl who runs it has some really good suggestions for ultra-low calorie recipes. Hope my suggestions were helpful. -Katie |

| Fitness | Confused and Need Help, Question about Calories Burned on an Elliptical | Jan 30 2008 06:02 (UTC) |
4 |
| I would say the calories on the machine are probably more accurate than the 851. I am 5'1", 104 lb, 21 years old. My machine has a weight input, and I do level one resistance for an hour at a speed that varies between 10.5 and 11 mph. The calorie counter on my machine says I burn about 830-850 in an hour. According to CC for elliptical at rigourous effort it says I burn only 566 calories. Are you sure you entered your information right? If you are only going 2.45 miles per hour, you are probably not burning 851 calories, even if you do weigh more than me. | |||
| Weight Loss | OK to do cardio twice a day? | Jan 14 2008 06:37 (UTC) |
2 |
I think it is fine. I do cardio twice a day everyday. Every morning I do an hour on the elliptical machine at 10+ mph. Two days a week I go back in the afternoon and do another hour on the elliptical at 10+ mph. Five days a week I go back in the afternoon and do a half an hour of running using an interval program with speeds ranging from 6.5-7.2 mph and inclines from 1-5% grade. I also do 1/2 hour of toning 5 days a week, and 25 minutes of weight-lifting 3 days a week. I don't think it is possible to do too much cardio, as long as you are eating enough to prevent your body from going into starvation mode. Also, make sure to keep yourself well-hydrated. I don't know how many calories someone your height and weight needs to eat to lose weight, without going into starvation mode. I am a 5'1" 104lb female and I eat about 1800 calories a day to maintain my weight. Your calorie range may be a little low for that level of cardio depending on how intense your exercise sessions are. |

Thanks for the replies. Jillmenow, thanks for the advice. If my knee pain doesn't start improving soon I will look into that. Lovlilynne, Yes I do run on the treadmill. I do an interval program with varying grades and speeds 1-5 incline and 6.5-7.2 speed. I have added a more extensive warm-up and cooldown. And my shoes are pretty new, so I don't think they are the problem. My knees felt okay after running yesterday, so hopefully my body just needed to adjust. Thanks again. -Katie

| Foods | Calories in Cheese- WOW | Jan 12 2008 06:45 (UTC) |
|
In cooking, try using fat-free cheese. Kraft fat-free shredded cheddar and mozzarella work well in eggs. The cheddar is yummy on top of chili or in a quesadilla. And the mozzarella makes a good, low-cal topping for a homemade thin-crust pizza. Fat-free cheese singles come in cheddar and American flavors and can be used in grilled cheese sandwiches and on top of burgers Fat free cheese does work best as part of a recipe; it tastes kinda funny if you try to eat it as a snack (the texture is weird). However, light string cheese is a good snack option. I like the kind from Trader Joes, which has 60 calories per cheese stick. |

| Foods | Artificial Sweeteners? Is there a catch? | Jan 10 2008 06:59 (UTC) |
|
I can't see how anyone can say that real sugar isn't horrible for your body and especially for your weight loss. It doesn't contribute anything nutritionally, and it contains 15 calories a teaspoon for a whopping 720 calories per cup. Splenda granular, on the other hand, contains only 2 calories a teaspoon for a total of 96 calories per cup. Sugar has 7x more calories. Substituting artificial sweetener in backed goods reduces calories by about 50-100 per serving, which is quite alot. I think the catch is that artificial sweeteners aren't actually calorie-free. To be considered calorie-free a food product has to contain less than 5 calories per serving, which sweeteners like splenda do. I don't know about the calories in other sweeteners, splenda is my sweetener of choice. The other thing is that artificial sweeteners and products made with them are more expensive than sugar and sugar-filled products. They have tests proving that all kinds of things are bad for you. If you avoided everything that some study said was bad for your health, you would never be able to eat anything. Consider how foods like eggs are coffee are considered good for you one minute and bad for you the next. I just ignore the studies and eat what I want. |
