You know, whenever I eat a good meal at home then go out and drink I do fine.  It's the bar food that always kills me.  I couldn't resist the $0.25 wings the other night and I'm still feeling bloated!  lol

Had a random beautiful day in New England yesterday (75 degrees), went for an hour walk along the beach.  But alas, the weekend is bringing only rain and thunderstorms, so I'll have to exercise doing housework and at the gym.

Yesterday made me want to drop some serious lbs asap for summer time.  Why do I always seem to procrastinate???  So has anyone tried any of those workout programs you see on tv?  The ones where you order the videos and start doing the workouts and "lose inches and pounds in 10 days".  I'm so tempted but not sure if any of them are worth it.

foxylady, good luck with the move.  A new country . . .  sounds so exciting!

Wow, so much to comment on.  Hello to all the newcomers, you're always welcome.  And I agree, this thread is a great support tool.

Paige, I love the Wii!  My friend has one and I've actually worked up a sweat on some of the games.  Granted I'm probably just out of shape, but regardless I have so much fun with it!  Keep up the good work, and just to reiterate what the others have said, remember to do this for yourself and no one else.

Foxylady, good luck with the 'house guest'.  You could always just tell her that you haven't been spending enough quality time with the dh.  I think she may get the hint and uninvite herself.  But as always, honesty will set you free.

vp, glad to hear you're getting better.  When I got sick I completely fell out of sync with the diet/exercise, so I give you a lot of credit for getting back on the horse.

Some general comments:  You know, my boyfriend has mentioned (well tried to anyways) about my weight.  I understand how hard I make it for him because I want honesty, but only if it doesn't hurt.  So he came up with a good way of motivating me and I'm not even sure if he realized the effect his actions would have on me, but they worked.  He started working out and dieting on his own (he was getting a little belly around the middle).  He's making some great progess, and now instead of offering to go out for ice cream after dinner, he invites me out for a walk on the beach.  It's really helping me want to be better myself because I see his results.

Have a great week everyone and keep the spirits up, the warm weather is almost here!

Hello everyone! Paige I'm just happy to hear from you, and our hearts are with you. I second the notion of a boxing class. Kick boxing is awesome and relieves stress wonderfully. I hope everything works out in the best way for you. My humble advise (relationships are not exactly my strong point) is focus on your children and yourself to get your spirits back up, which it sounds like you've been doing already.  Best of luck to you, and congrats on the all of the healthy steps!

I have a general question for everyone.  What's the deal with this Stevia stuff?  I tried it over my friend's house this past weekend and it was pretty good, but are there any side effects or catches to it?  I know using Splenda will eventually do bad things (those aritficial sweeteners scare the crap out of me), and I crash hard when I have real sugar in the morning.  So woe is me, what is a women to do to sweeten her morning java these days?

Easter did me in.  My pants are hardly fitting.  But on a good note, I walked into work today and saw a couple of the girls making oatmeal.  I've strayed from my usual 3/4 cup of oatmeal every morning but today I revisited it.  It was so satisfying and warm and good!  I guess sometimes we just need to see someone else being good to jumpstart our own healthy eating.  It makes me think too that if I eat healthy, the other people around me (at work and home) will be tempted to do the same.  Yep, I'm going to be a regular trend setter.  :)

Glad to hear from everyone.  Keep up the good work and I'll be thinking about some low-sugar, no egg breakfasts to recommend.

So I survived the trip to VA, and I've come to the conclusion that my Goddaughter is the happiest, cutest baby I've ever seen.  She kind of reminds me of the Gerber Baby in a way.

I ate fairly healthy all week, except for the White Castle we had on the trip home.  Man those little burgers add up!  But other than that little mishap, I made healthy choices and still enjoyed myself.  We went into DC on Saturday and toured the monuments.  We did it on our own and walked to each one.  I probably walked about 2-4 miles that day.  It felt good, but it was hard to put on strappy heels the next day.

I've been struggling over nutrition at home because my brother loves to eat anything and everything, and I have little will power around good tasting food.  But my brother recently reenlisted in the Army and has to lose some weight for his PT test.  So now I have free rein in the kitchen and it's nothing but healthy food and exercise for both of us!

Hope everyone had a good weekend, and here's to a great week ahead.  Paige . . . we miss you!

Welcome to all the people that just posted for the first time.  You've all come to the right place.

Nikpez, I hurt my back too and completely tanked on the exercise for a while because I was afraid of doing more damage and it hurt when I worked out.  I spoke to a couple of doctors and they told me that sitting and doing nothing is the "old school" method for back injuries and that being active will help to keep your back muscles strengthened and less likely to get reinjured.  So it sounds like you're on the right track with the walks.  Keep it up!

vpireiner, I'm definitely in for some group motivation.  Congrats on the dh coming home.  That type of support will be a great motivating factor.  Maybe venison stew?  I've found some great crockpot recipes right on about.com.

I'm taking a roadtrip to VA for my Goddaughter's Christening this weekend.  I've been fairly okay all week so for road trip snacks I've opted for bananas, trail mix, water, and pb sandwiches on whole wheat.  And all of it still tastes good, so hopefully the boys won't complain!

My mini-goal is to be active.  Whether it's walking, running at the gym, or playing tennis in 3 layers of clothing (it was 35 degrees yesterday when I played), I want to be active at least 3 times this next week.  I really feel great today and I only played tennis for 30-45 min yesterday.  Wow, this heathly living thing really does work!  Who would've thought???

Thanks for being there, and have a great weekend ladies!!!

Yaahhhh!  My friends are back!  Great to see all the posts.  I heard something on the radio today that I wanted to share.  It talked about cravings.  Apparently, if you're craving sugar your body needs a boost of energy.  It suggested going for a quick walk.  A 10 minute walk can boost your energy for 2 hours.  If you're craving salt it's because your body is dehydrated and needs water.  Your body craves the salt because salt holds water into your body, so the study suggests if you crave salt to drink a huge glass of water instead.  And now for the hardest one . . . if you're craving chocolate it's because your body needs to relax and chocolate has magnesium it in which calms the body down or something.  The study suggests nuts that also have lots of magnesium.  Or if you want to have chocolate do it in moderation because a little dark chocolate everyday is supposed to be good for you.

That's my tip for the day.  Thanks for posting everyone, it made me smile (and want to eat my carrots instead of chips from the vending machine!).

Where have all the regulars gone???  What's happening to everyone (not just us here).  Even in my office and my friends trying to lose weight I've been seeing the same disinterest.  I haven't worked out or eaten right in what seems like forever (probably more like 4 weeks).  It's weird but it just doesn't seem like a priority to me anymore but I want it to be.  The only time I think about it now is when I see myself in the mirror or have to pass over my favorite pants that don't fit anymore when getting dressed in the morning.

I cannot "go back" to where I was when I weighed less or had more muscle.  There is a little saying I have about life . . . no backing up - severe tire damage.  Just like in those parking garages you see occasionally.  But it's true.  Life changes and you can never be 21 again or go back to that time in your life when you were really happy.  The only thing I can do is make something new with my body and with my health.  So here's to creating new bodies, new outlooks, and new goals.  Good luck to everyone, and try not to be a stranger.  It's okay to post even when you're not living up to your own expectations.  It can only help everyone in the long run.

Thank you all for being there with your motivation and honest words.  Have a great week!

Thank you Vpiriener.  You know I didn't realize it until I read the last few comments, but I've been focusing on hating myself for not doing anything rather than why I'm doing this in the first place.  I think some time to myself and some soul searching will bring me back on course.  Congratulations on reaching those goals!

So who the heck invented french fries anyway?!?  I had a crappy weekend eating wise, but have maintained the weight (153, still only 5 lbs since the beginning of the year).  I've packed my lunch for today (tons of fruit and veggies for snacks) and want to make a fresh start just like you vegetariangeek.  I've been trying to stay strong through the little frustrating moments of life.  I overslept this morning and just spent the past 2 1/2 hours in traffic due to a really bad accident.  Got to work and burnt my english muffin.  Cry  The fresh start isn't looking so good, but I know I will feel better if I stick to eating healthy rather than letting frustration be my excuse for eating junk.

I know this may be a little TMI for most but I ordered these special cookies from a company in Canada.  They're called Bowel Buddy Cookies and boy to they live up to their name!  22 grams of fiber in 2 cookies.  And they don't really taste that bad either.

Hey ladies, I'm a few days away from my weigh in (on Sunday) and had to stop by the thread for some good ol' motivation.  And of course like always I have found it.  Jenprays, holy crap!  14 lbs. in under 2 months!!!!!  Now I think would be a good time for everyone to look back on their overall achievements as well as weekly.  That's definitely sparked me to do better (not that I'm doing too terrible).

vpireiner, great advice!  I'm trying to change my outlook on the whole dieting thing and that makes me think of the Little Engine That Could. Takes a bit of the dieting edge off.  Thanks!

Went to the gym 3 days so far this week and will probably go tonight and tomorrow despite the snow storm hitting New England.  Feeling great about exercising again even with the back pain, I just know I have to take it easy and rest afterward.  I noticed my pants fitting better already!  Good bye ghetto bootie!!!!  Laughing

Hey everyone!  I'm like the other brave souls that admited a less than spectacular weekend.  I ate a whole bunch of sun chips (yeah the commercials make them sound wholesome and good for you but they still have 6g of fat and 140 cal per serving!), went out to breakfast with chocolate chip, banana pancakes (don't knock it 'til you've tried it) and the list goes on and on.

But ladies, now is the time to look at the positive.  Don't let yourselves get discouraged.  Granted I didn't eat strictly this past weekend but I did a ton of moving around.  My wonderful brother let me know Friday night that he invited about 15 people over for dinner on Saturday.  After I was done screaming I went into super-clean mode.  I spent 3 1/2 hours cleaning the house on Friday, and then another 4 hours on Saturday morning (it was REALLY messy!).  Went shopping for ingredients, and carried and set up tables.  All together I burned about 2000 calories.  Of course that probably only balanced out all the pasta and meat I ate but it made me feel good.  I walked on the beach on Sunday in the wicked cold (another 200 calories burned) and I opted for the black tea instead of the hot chocolate when we stopped at DD to warm up (small triumph).  I went on the elliptical for a half hour yesterday and thought I was going to die, but I made it (525 calories burned).  Bottom line of all my rambling is if you know you're not in the mood to count and measure and be a diet angel, spend a little time moving around, playing with the dog, chasing the kids or something and it will at least negate the crap we feel like eating when we get a chance to unwind from the week.

To all of you who read through this, bless you.  I know it's a lot to take in first thing in the a.m..  Keep it up girls, we can do this!  Weighed in at 153 at the gym yesterday w/ shoes on.  No loss, no gain.  Still feel good that I have you all behind me to keep me going.

And Samiaz, you burn 122 calories per hour studying, so you did exercise this weekend!

I have the same problem exercising.  It used to be fun for me, but now I just get bored with it.  Who's up for a challenge?  Why don't we all try to do at least one activity this weekend that lets us get some exercise AND enjoy ourselves.  We can post on Monday (or Tuesday due to the holiday) and see what everyone did to get some different ideas.

 Any takers?

Thank you all so much, I really needed that reassurance.  I think I've finally gotten over the initial shock and am just going to trust in my own judgement with my weight loss and exercising.  Heck, I've been doing this for so many years now that I should know what's best for me better than a person that only sees me once or twice a year.

I do carry a lot of muscle, even though I haven't been able to pound the weights for over 2 months (sad face), but surprisingly as I do more cardio my muscles are starting to show again.  I knew they were in there, they were just hiding!!!

haveyjb - you're making a good arguement for me getting an Xbox, I've always wanted one!  You really do come up with some great ways to have fun and exercise.

I've been fighting a cold for the past few days and I'm afraid it may be the flu.  Looking at the positive of being sick, at least it is motivating me to eat healthier.

Paige - the before and after pics are a GREAT motivation to everyone.  I carry a before pic around in my car and one in my office.  People look at it and then look at me now and just ask how I did it.  It helps me remember where I was, what I went through, and makes me feel great that I could offer others help.  So you know you're not alone I'll scan my before pic and post it too.

Thanks again to everyone for being my motivation and helping me keep a level head!

Hey everyone,

It feels good to be a part of this group and that everyone's doing well.  Congrats on all the losses.  I went for a physical on Monday, and I got some shocking news . . . I'm only 5'2"!!!!!  And 1/2 inch of that was only after I made the nurse remeasure because I was sure the scale/height check was broken.  Well, I've come to terms with my actual height at 5'2" (even though my license says 5'3").

Good news from the physical:  I'm healthy, and my doctor loves my enthusiasm to eat right and take care of my body.  Oh, and I weighed in at 154!  Down another 1.5 for a total of 4 lbs in January.

Bad news from the physical:  I asked the doctor if it would be healthy to lose 15 lbs.  She asked my height and weight and said that I should lose at least 25 lbs.  So of course I went home and binged at the news.  Has anyone else found this whole BMI thing a crock, or am I just upset that I have farther to go than I thought?  At my skinniest I was 137, and for me I looked anorexic and sick.  Girls I need some advise, should I listen to my doctor (who's thin and beautiful btw) or stick with my original goal of getting down to 140?  Thanks for any responses.

Congrats to everyone again, yall are doing great!  And thank you for being my motivation.Smile

Hey everyone!  I missed my weigh in on Sunday (I've been using a friend's scale) and I decided to not weigh myself until the end of this week.  Hopefully I'll see some results . . . and I'm buying my own scale tonight so there won't be anymore excuses!

Paige, today is a new day.  I think we've all had those days where we binge and just can't get enough food.  The hardest thing for me was to own up to it and actually put EVERYTHING I ate on CC.  But I ended up using it as motivation.  Seeing the numbers push 2500 or even close to 3000 cal/day kind of woke me up.  The day after always leads to making better choices, so those "bad days" we all have are just par for the course.  I'm happy to see you're sticking with it.  I've said it before, but you all truly are the best motivation for me.

haveyjb, congrats on the activities.  Sounds like you found a good way to have fun and exercise at the same time!  I find it especially hard to do activities in the winter that get me up and moving, but bowling and dancing sound good to me.  Thanks for the idea.

Innocent sin you'd better be getting ready for the gym tonight!!! Good for you for getting back into it.

I made it!  Burned 500 calories at the gym, stretched my aching muscles, took a nice hot shower and felt great.  Thanks for keeping me accountable, I need that!

missea, I get the same thing some times.  My body just CRAVES more food, usually carbs.  I have an idea though.  Try going out for a nice juicy steak and have veggies on the side or a salad.  Maybe it's my upbringing, but it seems to me some red meat always makes me feel better.  Or, if you're watching the meat intake, try just making a whole pound of veggies, drizzle some EVOO on top with a little seasoning and go to town.  Yeah, it's a huge portion, but the calorie count is minimal.  Good luck everyone!  I love hearing about everyone's experiences.

Wow, everyone's sounding great!

Paige congrats on the test results and regular work outs. You are definately an inspiration.

Vegetariangeek, that's a great suggestion. I always have trouble eating out. Thanks.

Kelly, I've found that even walking will build muscle. I say blow a few bucks at the gym to get a body fat test done, then retest in about a month. If you're going to be training, that is a great way to track progress and it's less stressful that the scale (for me anyway).

Just keep up the workouts, you all are giving me the itch to go back to the gym regularly. I went on Wednesday and got yelled at by everyone I know there for being MIA. I owned up to making excuses and now I'm going back tonight. Wish me luck!

Does anyone have any suggestion on weight machines at gym vs. using dumbells or doing taebo/pilates? Also, my problem is that I don't feel like going to gym after work and I am not an early riser either. Once I am at gym, I love it and not in any rush to go home. What do you all to get motivated to go to gym?

Hi sab120, I love sleeping late if I get the chance, and like you I don't really feel like going to the gym after work, I'd rather just go home and relax.  When I was a regular in the gym, I worked out with the "Big Boys" pounding heavy weights and I learned a key phrase, "When in doubt . . . go heavy."  Well of course being a woman and not wanted to completely lose my boobs, I modified the phrase to, "When in doubt, go to the gym."  When I'm coming up to the exit for the gym, to quiet the going home and relaxing rationale inside my head I repeat the phrase to myself and just go to the gym.  So my trick is, just make it like going to work, there is no question about whether or not to go, just go.  And relaxing afterwards will be that much better!

Now if I could only take my own advice and get back to the gym, I'd lose these 20 lbs. in no time!

Weighed in yesterday, 155.5 down from 158!  Great to see something less on the scale.  Thank you all for your support and great tips!  Keep it going!

One more thing, Paige congrats on the bread switch!  It's the little changes we make that add up to so much.  I just wanted to recommend that while you're in a switching mood, if you're trying to watch your sugar intake for diabetic reasons, rye bread is great.  It's a few more calories than whole wheat, but has a lot less sugar.  I went to have a colonic and the technician told me that rye bread doesn't "back-you-up" as much either.  Which was great for me to hear!  Okay, I'm sure that was too much info for most, so I'll get back to work now!

Jan, I know exactly what you mean.  My boyfriend is constantly moving all day at work where I sit on my ever-growing behind!  Both of our eating habits have gotten so bad, that now even he is gaining weight.

A question for all you ladies (and the token gentleman):  I find myself eating later and later each night, which I know is not good for me.  But it just gets so hard to work 9 to 5 all day, go to the gym (on those good days!) and then by the time I go home and cook & eat, it's after 7:30 or 8 sometimes.  Does anyone have any advice on how to get dinner on the table at a reasonable time while still being healthy?

Oh, on the subject of vegetables, I know there's nothing like nice fresh veggies but in a pinch the frozen kind can work great too.  I steam them until just tender, drizzle some EVOO on top, salt, pepper, garlic power and sometimes adobo and toss everything around to coat evenly.  Even my brother (the burger and fries guru) loves the veggies because they taste savory, but are still pretty good for you.  Just a thought for everyone.

Thanks for all the motivation.  I think this whole losing weight thing might actually work this time for me!  Three more days 'til weigh-ins!

Hey hilary,

I know it seems obsessive to log EVERYTHING you eat on the website, especially when you have to spend time finding exactly the right things to click on, but it honestly helps to keep me accountable.  And it helps me to not just eat whatever's around the house, because I know I have to log it all in.  I'd give it a shot for a week, and after that see how it effects you.  Welcome to the group and good luck with everything!!!

Okay, I was dreading adding this post to weigh in.  The last time I weighed myself was right after Christmas at 158, and I'm sad to say that I weighed in last night at 158 still.  Although I suppose that's good since last week was my first week watching my calorie intake and I went nuts during the weekend (can't resist IHOP on Sunday mornings!).

Just want to say thank you to everyone on this post.  I spent all last night disgusted with myself after the weigh in, but having other people out there seems to help ease the blow.  Thanks again, and now let's all go out there and work off some calories for week 2!

Hi paige98,

Some advise for when you get to the cruise . . . stay busy!!!  During the cruise and when you come back.  I just got back from a cruise over the holidays, and while I felt fine on the cruise because we were always active, I kept up the "carefree" attitude when I came home.  However, it's not that easy to be active in the winter when you live in New England.  The weight just seemed to appear out of no where.  Just a tip, but make sure you enjoy yourself above all else!

Hello Maryyy,

Girl, we ALL get unmotivated!  I've been at this for a few years now (between losing and maintaining my weight).  A few things that have helped me along the way are get a "before" picture and keep it in the car so you'll drive past McDonalds and you won't stop, or keep it at work so you won't be tempted to order out.

Also, try different recipes.  Get a low-cal cookbook, or check out Weight Watchers recipes.  Make exciting dishes and be prepared so you won't have to try and be healthy on the spot.  There's more than one way to diet and exercise, so try something different.  You've lost 32 lbs. in about 8 months!  Do you know how amazing that is!?!?!?!?!

I'll probably be black-listed from this forum for this next piece of advice, but whenever I get frustrated or lose motivation I change my outlook and I stay away from the scale.  I work out and eat healthy foods and focus on how I FEEL, not the number under my feet.  Isn't that what we're all after anyway . . . feeling better about ourselves?

Okay, I'll step down from my soap box.  Keep up the good work, and invite someone whose company you enjoy out for a walk.  That always helps (and it's exercise too!).

I've been using CC on and off for the past 6 months, but I just joined as a member today!  I am 25, 5'3" and weigh in at 158.  I gained a ton of weight in high school, and lost most of it (50-60 lbs.) through Weight Watchers and changing my activity level.  Over the last few months, between a back injury and my brother coming to live with me (he loves to cook) I've put back on 10 lbs.  My goal is to lose 20 lbs. by mid year.

I love exercising, but would like some different ideas for cardio since I cannot lift weights for a while.  I get bored with the treadmill or eliptical all the time.

Also, does anyone have any advice on how to deal with family members who are not dieting?

Thank you all for your inspiration.  It's so comforting to know that there are other people in the same situation out there!  Good luck, and remember how good you'll feel the next morning if you don't eat that midnight snack!
