| Weight Loss | How do I get out of this place? | Jun 04 2009 19:04 (UTC) |

I feel your pain. I was there too, the self loathing , the shame and to make it worse, you lose some weight and people comment and then you put it back on and then you have the humiliation of being back where you started, and people asking what happened?? It's a vicious cycle and it hurts and the more you hurt- the more you eat....Now for the good news though. In January 2007 I weighed 257 pounds, now I weigh 145, check out my gallery for before and after pics. I came to this site everyday and logged every single thing I put in my mouth, including 5 calorie sugarless gum. I have maintained this weight for almost a year now and still check in here everyday to make sure I stay on track. This site saved my life...I could not do it alone and was too embarassed to reach out to friends and family, they were thin and just didn't "get it". Peer support was vitally important to me in this journey. Stick with it and listen to the great advice from those who went before you. You CAN do it. Just do it one day at a time, just like giving up drugs and alcohol, you can beat the bulge and you will feel awesome !! Good luck, and keep us posted! |

Thanks for the comments everyone, Just a little confession, I am 42 and my new boyfriend is 29, whoop whoop! I know he's a little too young for me, but so decadent! Anyhow, I do NOT deprive myself, I eat all the time, but never go over 1400 calories per day. I know it is very limited but when shopping, I don't even go down the aisle where my trigger foods are, like potato chips or ice cream. I simply do not have them in the house, not even for an occasional treat. I nibble fruit, crackers, lean meat, beef jerky, sugarless drinks, gum etc. I eat huge meals of steamed veggies in low calorie sauces like teriyaki or lemon ginger with single servings of lean meats, like chicken breast or roast beef. I honestly am not hungry and if I do get hungry- I like prawns dipped in salsa; I will also make my own tortillas chips with flat breads and a little Pam in a frying pan, seasoning salt or garlic salt will flavour them up for dipping, very low calorie and very filling. Also try dipping rice cakes in salsa, so good! I don't use mayo or butter, only eat the whites of eggs and my omelettes are filled with good stuff like broccoli and green onions or mushrooms and ham (very lean) It may not sound like it but I also go easy on salt, and drink tons of water or sugarless juice mixes like Crystal lite. I exercise but only in ways that matter to me, like for example I chop and pack my own firewood, clean my yard, do my own rototilling of the garden and shovel my own snow. Even though it is tempting to just hire some man to do it, it is good for me and I really do enjoy it once I get going. I simply can not sit on an exercise bike or jump up and own in front of the television, I would feel stupid. Being healthy is my focus now, so the weight loss has slowed down dramatically, weighing myself every day is the ONLY way I am able to stay on track so don't forget to do that! It will keep you acountable every day for what you put in your mouth. Hope this is helpful!!

I have before and after pics on my profile. I have lost almost 100 pounds so far so I am actually smaller now than in the after pic. It took me a year as I started counting caloies on January 7th 2007. I hadn't been under 200 since my pre-teen years. so , yeah I am sooo excited that this site worked for me!! I hope this is motivating for you!

| Foods | crystal light vs plain water | Jul 01 2008 01:06 (UTC) |

I also struggle with plain tap water,YUCK, but I have found that if I buy a case of Dasani bottled water , we all, even the kids, drink more water; especially if it's ice cold. I am of the same school of thought as your dad, if you add anything to water it is not water anymore. I feel that clean water flushes the liver and kidneys unlike other prepared drinks. So, I try to make sure that we all drink as much "actual" water as possible. Though sometimes if I feel like something different, I will add a drop or two of Realemon and Splenda. |

| The Lounge | I just wanna like, you know, live dude. | Jun 29 2008 01:27 (UTC) |

This might like like tripe to you but I am over 40 and I like, lived dude, when I was young. How did I do that? I worked the night shift! For ten years I only worked from midnight to 8 am and I had loads of time to meet people, and believe it or not save money. I would sleep from 8am-2pm each day and then the rest of the day was mine. I made some wonderful friends while lazing around the beach all day. Most people work during the day, those who don't are either on welfare or are wealthy and/or retired, and those are the people I would naturally gravitate to. I joined a golfing club and reading clubs and met wonderful people who often extended invitations to visit with them to Mexico or Italy etc. ( I eventually lived in Veracruz Mexico for a year) I saved a lot of my money from work, and travelled for a full year before I settled in British Columbia Canada, and now? Ah..This is the life!! |

My husband told me a long time ago that he liked my "bouncy" walk when he first met me. I alwyas kind of thought about hat when ever I walked towards him, but then he told me some time later, after I had gained about 60 pounds that I didn't walk like that anymore. THEN just a few days ago, after a major weight loss, he said that I had that "bouncy" walk again. I asked exactly what he meant by "bouncy" walk (because frankly I thought I was especially bouncy with the extra weight) He said that now only my boobs bounced and that was what he first noticed...LOL men! |

| The Lounge | What do you do when nobody's home? | Jun 26 2008 03:48 (UTC) |

Oh yeah I forgot about the walking around in my old pyjamas with my hair unbrushed...AND yesterday's make-up on my face ICK. But then I get really embarassed if the uncle and aunt show up for a visit with the poodles. My driveway is way too short to wet the hair and wipe the face before they knock; they always look at me with pity and disgust and tell me I need to get out more. |

I use the rare occasion home alone to practice new songs on my guitar, because, for some reason, my kids get attitude when I stumble through the same verse 11 times and still don't get it right. Also I watch real crap on Youtube, like Poison, Skid Row or Motley Crue videos. Oh yeah and sometimes I listen to old classics on the stereo that the kids would bust if they got their hands on them; like Fleetwood Mac, Ozzy, Supertramp and The Scorpions OK -now you really know who I am!! LOL |

I personally don't wear rings, but the first place I noticed my weight loss was in my wrists and ankles. My daughter however is like a melting snowman, it goes from her shoulders first and then drops off down her body, kind of frustrating for her as her main issue is her butt/hips. |

| Weight Loss | I have had it, I give up (Updated) | Jun 24 2008 19:37 (UTC) |

I am 41, 5'4" and was stuck at 187 for three weeks, BUT look at my gallery and you will see that I've gone from 257 to 187 in one year (from 247 to 187 just since January) Oh yeah, plateaus suck, but if you are going to get fit, thin and healthy it needs to be done right, that means slow and steady. The first few pounds spoils us into thinking that it is always going to be fast like that, but alas, that is just not the case. I am just beginning to lose again after that 3 week plateau and I have found that drinking the water REALLY does matter, fat is flushed in urine-so drink up. Remember, as you reach a plateau, your body has adjusted to the new routine and weight loss slows down..so shake it up! Go dancing, try zig-zagging-eat more one day (have the gravy and biscuits! just make sure you log it), and then less the next day, go to the zoo and walk ten miles, choose the stairs for a solid week regardless of how many floors you are travelling, yep- go jogging, or speed walking, - have fun with the kids on the trampoline.... whatever you can do to mix things up and get the body working again will help you through it. Don't give up, think about your goal and keep your eye on the prize! Good luck!!
Editted to add this regarding your comment "my gut is gross" . Excuse me if I am being too presumptious, but I am thinking that since you are about my age, you most likely have kids?? I too have a lot of issues with my belly and have discovered that there is something called post-natal abdominal separation which is basically a separation of the abdomenal muscles due to pregnancy. Crunches and sit-ups will actually make your belly protrude MORE. If this is your case, I suggest you do a bit of research as there are certain exercises that will help get that belly under control. Hope this is helpful. |

Aspertame never bothered me in the past but since I changed my diet, I have found that a teaspoon of it in my tea is no problem but a diet Coke/diet Pepsi will give me a raging headache. Personally I prefer the taste of Splenda, but I do wonder how can they make a sugar substitute out of sugar??? |

| Weight Loss | 150 cals every 2 hours? | Jun 23 2008 23:25 (UTC) |

I often eat all day long, especially those "munchy" days, just before my period when I just can't seem to stop stuffing my face, I stay at around 1400 calories per day so.... here are some of my favourites.... 1/2 chicken breast- 100 calories 1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese- 90 calories rice cake, slice of lean beef and laughing cow cheese-135 calories Stacies Pita chips (28 chips)- 90 calories ( delicious by the way) mushroom, onion and egg white omelette- 55 calories prawns grilled w. garlic- 100 calories for about 10 large prawns and of course lots of fruit and veggies to round out my diet. On those days when I eat every couple of hours I am usually cleaning house or working at the computer. On those days, I do not eat bread, pasta or rice at all because I find I then run out of calories too early in the day. I read somewhere that early man would eat every hour or so, because they were foragers and would just eat whattever they could find throughout the day. the article said that it is a "natural" way for humans to eat, that doing the three meal a day thing is not healthy for how our bodies are designed...but who knows for sure.

missfairfax, you asked how I feel... I feel beautiful..Oh, I know I am not "magazine beautiful" but I feel light and tiny and delicate and very feminine. I feel healthy and airy and energized. When my co--workers decide to walk the two blocks to lunch instead of drive, I no longer huff and puff behind them, I walk along with them and am now able to chat as I walk! ( I couldn't do that before... just trying to breathe man!) When I roll over in bed I no longer have to take two tries at it, I just simply roll over! I can go up stairs without stopping for air at each landing. My kids can get their arms all the way around me!!! I feel wonderful! |

Original Post by gingerkabureck: Oh boy gingerkabureck did you make the right decision! The ending of The Myst was so horrible I almost threw my shoe through the screen. Honestly, if you watch a 2 hour movie and then want to strangle someone during the last 30 seconds, you can call that a BAD movie! |

WOW, so many questions! As the lean meat, I eat anything that doesn't have visible fat. I know it sounds so simplified, but even if it has white fat , I just trim it off and feed it to the dog (or throw t out if she has had enough. ) I eat prawns, chicken breast, white fish, pork loin and lean beef ( roast, steak, stew, whatever) but only 3 ozs per day. I have stopped eating things like sausages and meatloaf etc because it's just too hard to sort out the ingredients and come up with an accurate analysis ( I'm lazy like that) Like I said before piles of steamed vegetables, with Becel buttery spray , (0 calories and tastes just like butter) I usually season my vegetables with garlic, chives, ginger and lots of fresh herbs, like thyme, dill , oregano ( if I add with stewed tomatoes) . Sometimes I will add black bean sauce and will cook a cubed chicken breast with the vegetables and add a couple of tblspoons of that and it is really good and low calorie , but high in soduium so I make sure I get my water that day.

Thanks so much for your good wishes I couldn't have done it without all of you and your words of advice and encouragement over the last 6 month Here are my "secrets" -I eat between 1400 and 1600 calories per day -I eat steamed veggies every day, up to 500 calories worth. -3 ozs of lean meat each day, no more and no less. -300 calories of fruit, any fruit I want each day. no bread, but either 1/2 cup of pasta or 1/2 cup of rice with a meal if it fits into my caloric allowance for the day. snacks- grapefruit, apples, pita chips, fat free jello snacks, and rice cakes. and lots of fresh water and herb tea. AND, I will take the stairs if given a choice, or park at the far end of the parking lot and walk to the mall. And I dance whenever I'm alone! Not lots of exercise- but every bit counts. |

thanks guys, I know I still look pretty chunky, but for the first time in ten years I can look at a picture of myself and NOT be disgusted. The before picture is just so embarassing, but I needed to keep it to remember how awful I felt and stay motivated. I will post pics again after another 6 months, will I be at my goal weight?? fingers crossed! |

My dog will eat apple cores, green tomatoes right off the vine, ( I gave her a smack for that one as she only eats one bite of each tomato and then moves along to the next one on the vine) . Weird, but she eats pebbles and then chokes them out on the living room carpet in the middle of the night. She loves the kids soggy cereal. She loves crackers and potato chips, ( they have been banished from my house now though) She also loves frozen food, like popsicles, ice cream, frozen mixed vegetables and frozen meat. In a pinch I'll give her an ice cube and she is pretty happy with that too. I once had a dog that ate the crotch out of my jeans and underwear, gross eh, the dirty little bugger. |

My daughter went to The Hells Gate Airtram Fudge Factory ( in British Columbia, Canada) and brought me a big bag of chocolate covered gummie bears. EVILLY delicious candy, I ate them all in one night and now I feel sick just thinking about chocolate. I suppose I won't want to eat any thing like that for a few months . So...as far as getting that out of my system... I'm good, how about you? |
