i understand what you're going through..
I am 5'2 and 112 now and I have a very tiny bone structure and feel terrible at this weight. I don't know when I will stop gaining...what is the right amount of calories vs exercise? what is my body's set point? everyone is different as you noted in the original post. as much as this makes me absolutly miserable to say-we both have no idea what our bodies will decide to do from here :/ but i believe you've been maintaining at 112 for a while right? maybe try and build a bit of muscle mass to burn extra cals. i am thinking about getting my rmr checked so i have a better guess what to do-but thats down the road as I am a bit broke...
if you can figure out how to make this terrible gaining stop please let me know too :) |

| Health & Support | Sudden Weight Gain and a Disturbing Doctor Visit... | Aug 29 2008 22:58 (UTC) |

some advice on the bloodwork-request a copy of it and either do research on your own or show the results to that doctor you trusted 30 mins away. i went to a terrible doctor and was suffering from refeeding syndrome after an ED. he told me to deal with it, keep eating and dont stop gaining. i went to someone who knew what they were talking about and they helped me get healthy again. the original doc said i was fine-bloodwork came back clean. however i requested a copy and i was anemic with all sorts of different issues another doctor helped me deal with. you paid for the bloodwork, the results are yours and its routine to get a copy faxed to you, or you can swing by and pick it up. i can understand how difficult it must be for you...those situations are tough.
i agree to add weight training if you dont already do it. it has worked wonders for me in terms of toning and keeping me feeling fit and healthy. good luck! |

i was bulimic for a few years (more EDNOS and recovering now) but never saw blood. It could be many different things-simply a broken blood vessel, scraped throat etc...but it could also be worse. In general if you see blood talking to a doctor is a good idea. And if youre afraid of telling them about your ED, if they dont know, tell them you ate something bad and got ill. the most important thing is making sure youre ok physically. Purging is terrible for your health all around, i know from experience...so if you can speak honestly with your doctor to discover the cause

i am an inch shorter then you and 98lbs last time i checked (up from 80). i took my own bikini shots today and i can honestly say you look a LOT thinner then me...so i understand where youre coming from. to me, my photos showed a girl with a lot of fat to lose. but i am usually a better, more realistic judge when i see others and you look amazing girl :)
how do we get past this..? thats a tough one. it does take looking in the mirror and accepting your flaws. if you can, do it everyday. look at the good and the bad and just do your best to accept and love it all. youre so pretty and look amazing in all the shots. im still working on it...and i am sure itll take more time. but you look amazing and its time we all try and accept who we are, what we look like and that weight doesnt dictate beauty, energy, personality or how you live your life. hang in there |

i agree with peaches... i was an underweight bulimic/anorexic...at 5'2 i was down to 80 lbs, or at least i think that was my lowest. i started eating how i should be, totally stopped purging, and gained 32 lbs in 6 weeks. i was pretty uncomfortable...but then suddenly my metabolism picked up and i dropped back down to around 100 lbs. now i go between 97-105, depending the day and im fine with it usually...i eat what i want but also eat for health. i chose foods and meals because i know my body will thank me for it. but then again i make a mean banana bread that isnt very healthy...heh...and i have a small piece with tea or coffee and am satisfied. for suggestions-make sure you get enough of all the nutrients in, as well as ample protein. i alswo took up yoga and weight training. id do weights 3 times a week, job for maybe 10-15 mins a few times a week, and do yoga whenever i had time. i found it eased my concerns and helped my body adjust to more food. the weight work is to help speed your metabolism and keep your body healthy. the cardio was because i didnt want to be sedentary and i wanted to stay physically fit. its a tough road. i found myself feeling huge the other day, but i did a 20 min tae bo workout last night (which i think are fun) and i feel amazing today. hang in there...you may gain a bit at first but eventually itll even out as your body learns to trust you again. try not to weight in for a bit if you can :) |

| Health & Support | rant- my nutritionist is useless!!! | Jul 23 2008 16:37 (UTC) |

i never saw a nutritionist but i did go to several doctors. make SURE you find one that has some experience dealing with EDs. The doctors I went too first didn't understand what I was going through so i got the same "eat more and youll fix everything" then when I got refeeding syndrome and was in constant pain they said I was fine...so yes it matters greatly who you go to.
I'm sorry you had that experience....give it a few months and itll fade (i know thats hard when we take this stuff so personally). try and maintain a positive attitude about recover-youre doing this for your health, your happiness, not theirs. obviously she does not understand and has a bad bedside manner...so switch to a different one. better yet, google some experienced nutritionists in eating disorders. maybe you can find a highly recommended one in your area who will help rather then hinder your progress. :) |

| Health & Support | boyfriend's comments | Jul 15 2008 16:53 (UTC) |

im recovering from an ED as well...I struggle with it daily but I am doing a lot better. my hubby is generally very supportive-he knows everything about the situation-but sometimes he makes comments about my still being too skinny. to me, that says "i'm fat". now rationally, you and i know that "youre so skinny" doesnt mean the same thing as "youre too fat" but the little pesky ED voice tells me otherwise. i sat down with him after he made one of the comments so the situation would be fresh in his mind and told him how much i struggle with everything, and that even a very innocent comment like "youre too skinny" could be construed as something negative. he, at the time, was trying to reassure me that even since i have gained a lot i am still thin. he thought he was helping...lol...silly man...but now he understands and curtails the commentary.
i did try to talk to my father but he doesnt understand how that could bother me. some men understand and some dont. its really us where the problem is, since our minds take things personally-the people who are saying the comments are not meant to be hurtful.
id suggest sitting down and talking with him and explaining how hard it is for you. ask him to help you stay at a healthy caloric intake so you can beat this once and for all :) good luck! (sorry for the essay lol) |

im recovering from an ED also and for a while my waist grew 2-3 inches, and every now and then it does it again when I get bloating badly...but I have settled at appx 22 inches but i am very small boned. i am 5'2 (or just under) and about 98-102 lbs you have to expect that during parts of recovery your stomach will get a bit bigger. maybe wear some slightly baggy tops for a while till it settles down. the 26 might be a more accurate measurmenet. then again everyones body is different. glad to know youre getting healthy. focus on maybe doing a little ab work to tighten your waist if youre ok to do exercise now |

a suggestion to help with your tongue- when ive had too many salty things i switch to blander things or creamier foods. like maybe have mashed potatos with dinner. make yourself a nice smoothie or milk shake and have ice cream/frozen yogurt. protein shakes can be so yummy and filling (choc or vanilla prot powder, banana, milk or soy milk and peanut butter for instance) theyll give you the protein boost and things you need plus give your poor tongue a break! id suggest staying away from things like chips and crackers till it gets better. that feeling is terrible, hope it gets better!

im not out the other side yet-but i feel things getting better. i took 2 steps forward, 1 step back, but im still positive a step, right? :) itll be slow but try and find something that makes you smile. maybe volunteer somewhere. it takes your mind off things happening to you (which i know i need) and quiets the constant concerns. |

i got night sweats after about a month of recovery and they lasted for about 6 weeks. not every night but most, and i wasnt drenched either, but def sweating... i love green tea so i drink regularly. eat frequently. lemon water is also wonderful and refreshing. i keep a bottle of water by my bed so i am constantly drinking even if i wake up so i stay hydrated. i eat withing 20-30 min of waking up, always something high protein like greek yogurt, honey and granola. i always eat within 20-30 mins of any workout-even just an intense walk. and again, i try for high protein to help with muscle recovery over all...just takes time :) |

i was warned when i switched from yasmin to yaz that it isnt a pill for everyone. its a lower dosage than yasmin so many people do get spotting. some get past that and some dont. i spotted a bit the first month then never again. but if its happening often talk to your gyno because you jmay need a different pill. or, if it doesnt bother you too much wait and see :) it shouldnt be harming you, only inconveniencing you really...so its your choice |

ive been on Yaz a while now (2 years?) and certainly didnt gain weight from it. It did help keep my skin clear. I never felt lathargic either. Get on it asap-it will help regulate TTOM so that you can avoid it on your wedding/honeymoon! my ob-gyn told me that I could take the active pills and when youre supposed to go off just start another pack right away. this skips your period that month, and if its during your honeymoon that might be a plus. its only recommended to do for one month though-and as always ask your gyn before doing that.
have an amazing wedding, congrats and a wonderful honeymoon :) |

| Health & Support | I need your opinion: how much fat do I have to lose? | Jun 21 2008 04:28 (UTC) |
9 |
in my opinion i'd say lose no more than 5 lbs. BUT also take up weight training and some light cardio. if you could replace some of the fat you gained 9as we all do in recovery) with muscle youll look smaller and more toned and appear to weigh less. plus youll be doing it in a healthy manner. remember to up cals slightly with exercise, and protein, so you can build the muscle mass. you may not see much of a shift in weight but use your body fat percentage as a guide. measure yourself once every 2 weeks maybe while weight training and watch the body fat percentage go down instead of the number on the scale :)

| Weight Gain | 20 pounds in 3 days | Jun 08 2008 00:51 (UTC) |
1 |
20 lbs in 3 days=totally possible. 20 lbs of fat in 3 days=not likely i have gained 15 lbs in one day. it is not fun. sounds like youve gained a LOT of water weight. for much of that to be fat youd have to seriously have overeaten was a lot of food processed? it probably had a LOT of sodium. let your body level out a bit, slowly ease back to the diet and try and aim for low sodium foods. |

| Health & Support | Concerned...please read | Jun 06 2008 05:34 (UTC) |

as soon as i started recovery i lost my period. a few months later i got it back...then i started exercising. i didnt get my normal mid-month 'symptoms' and was concerned, but its happened that way for 3 months now. i still get it-no problem! this is all a learning process. keep doing what youre doing and wait till the end of the month-see what happens. if you lose it, i am sure itll only be temporary, but i doubt it. at this point youre probably just seeing the relief of some symptoms. before my ED i'd get this when i'd workout (not excessivly) i think itll be ok :) just wait and see and if youre concerned ask your doc. but it doesnt sound excessive at all. maybe, if youre super concerned, take it easy on the exercise for the rest of the month till you know for sure |

im working on resetting my digestion now. itll take a while and you have to eat things that wont make it worse-finding the right balance of fiber is important. honestly i try and get a lot of calories from liquid sources-sometimes ill have a huge protein shake or a big smoothie. these things are easily digested, and wont upset your belly as much. if you dont want to go to the doctor then just eat 'easy' for your belly :) its re-learning digestion. it does get better with time :) |

| Health & Support | ED Recovery Club II (the REAL one) | Jun 04 2008 16:32 (UTC) |

I started eating 1200 calories-the healthiest calories i could balance out-a day. in 6 weeks i was 33 lbs heavier. i started at 5'2 and 80 lbs. after the 6 weeks...112 lbs. i was in agony. my muscles and joints didnt know how to cope with the extra weight. i upped my calories pretty quickly to 1600 (or so) a day. did some yoga, weight training and mild cardio, but not daily. i dropped about 15 lbs pretty quickly. i dont know how our bodies can gain so much on so little calories, but they want us to survive right? so if they think were still starving they will drop the body functions and pack on the pounds for a rainy day when it doesnt get any. im between 97-102 lbs now and i eat 1600 cals. upping my cals i saw a loss immediately. i know another girl from a support group online that did the same thing as me and gained 7 lbs. she stuck with it and lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks, then started to drop more (she was a high-normal weight from the ED) it also helped with her binging since suddenly she was allowed to eat more. (she jumped to 1800, shes about 5'5) this is so tough on us all. i wake up daily going through hell still but it helps to have more of a handle on it. we can get there. we can do this. i want you all to succeed and wake up in the morning and know youre beautiful and healthy and at a weight that is comfortable and sustainable. why should we be terrified of the scale? we can beat this! when i reached 112 lbs i thought my life was over. i was so depressed i was ready to do anything-so what the hell, i raised to 1600 calories. my hubbys very inspiring, realistic and honest words got me through. "whats the worst that could happen if you go to 1600 calories? you gain some water weight the next day? and if it bothers you, you drop to 1200 again the next day. YOU'RE in control, not the ED. and no matter what you can do this" thats what i want to say to you all :) give it a try. the worst that can happen is a temporary gain and then its up to you if you stick it out or ease off for a little while. we all recover at our own pace. im having a terrified-i-just-had-the-most-amazing-breakfa st day :) so i wanted to try and be supportive because really, it helps me. it helps to write out what i know is true, since the ED likes to trick me sometimes :) each and every one of you looks beautiful today. :) |

:( no health insurance? it could be anemia. do you get enough iron in your diet? make sure youre taking a multivitamin that has iron, or you could always get a seperate iron suppliment.
do you eat close to when you workout, or after? maybe try to have a protein/vitamin shake after your workout. this will help with recovery also. another thing you might try is drinking gatoraid or propel when you workout. maybe youre low on electrolytes. its almost 2 am here lol, so those are my half asleep guesses :) |

im sorry to hear what youre going through :( it sounds like youve been through a tough few days. binge eating is terrible-i hate the way my stomach feels after and how big i feel. most of the gain is temporary! youve been drinking a LOT of water also, so that does account for a good amount. what do you normally eat? if youre under eating normally it will make you want to binge. maybe try balancing out cals more so your body isnt craving things? and times when you know youre likely to binge, try doing something that will occupy you-go for a walk, get involved in something. hang in there, you can get past this! EDIT: i looked at your profile a second ago-my name is Rachel haha that was weird reading that. but you look thin in your photos and youve come a long way. :) |

i speak to a 'group' online that is in recovery from different ED's. it has helped so much. i never saw a therapist or nutritionist (no money, no insurance) and thus far peer support and family support has helped the most. yes, be careful of competition (thats why i like online support systems-theyre lack that easy-comparison problem. we just chat about all things that have helped us and support each other) but it sounds like an amazing group and id def give it a try if i was you :) |
