Glad to hear your parents are involved and concerned about your health.

You are battling a disease that really needs outside medical assistance before it gets more out of control. Could you talk to your parents and ask to see a nutritionist or a therapist on an outpatient basis? It sounds to me like they'd be happy to help esp. if they were so worried about you that they wanted to send you away for medical intervention. They would probably be relieved that you want the help even as an outpatient. That is, if you really do want help which I hope you do.

It sounds like you are having difficulty battling this alone. Get it under control with professional help before it totally wrecks your life. There are lots of people here that will tell you this from experience.

No one should have to live like this and you deserve a better life.

Looking at this objectively, if you go back to eating 200 calories a day which you MUST know is dangerous and extremely unhealthy, you'll also then be setting yourself up for more binging. Your body is going to do whatever it can to get nutrients and food back into your system once you've starved it and then allow it to eat again. Bottom line, you cannot live on 200 calories a day. Your body is going to fight back to survive and make you eat.

Are you under any kind of medical care right now? You need to find a healthy amount of calories to eat EVERY day (at the VERY minimum 1200 - probably more for you.) Not 200 one day and 5000 the next. I think deep down inside you know this and there's hope for you. Good luck to you.

Gotta agree. I have been a big exerciser for many years now. Always thought, "As long as I exercise and eat pretty healthy, that will take care of things." Well, it wasn't until I really buckled down this year and watched the calories that these final 8 pounds or so are finally coming off. Been trying to get rid of them for years.

Don't get me wrong, exercise is still important. I credit it with keeping my weight stable for many years even now into my forties. But it's amazing how many calories you can eat (even if it is healthly - or sometimes not) without  realizing it.

Congrats and keep up the good work!

Health & Support HELP: Loose skin, wrinkles and pain Apr 02 2008

Gotta agree with the other posters. Skin is just skin. People do not become ill or worse, die, from having flabby skin and wrinkles but they can have extreme health problems from too much weight.

I'll bet you're just as "gorgeous, sweet and charming" at this new weight as you were at the old one.  And I'll bet your family and friends would rather have you around for years to come, wrinkles and all.

Not sure how fast you are losing but as one person mentioned, make sure you aren't losing too fast to give your skin a chance to slowly regain elasticity.

As for your back pain, definitely leave that up to your MD. Hopefully it's just something a little core work may help. Take care.

Foods important question about WHEY PROTEIN Mar 25 2008

I've tried many different types of whey protein and most of them were not very pleasant tasting. Usually had to hold my nose to get it down and I could always detect it in my smoothies.

Someone here recommended Optimum Nutrition's chocolate (I think it was you dm84!) It really does taste good for whey protein. No horrible lingering after taste like others I've tried. I can even easily drink it mixed with water which is saying alot for me and whey protein. Tastes even better with skim milk.

Ditto here on the chocolate thing. I thought I could never give up milk chocolate but like many others here, have switched to other alternatives like the dark chocolate. I buy Ghiradelli 60% cacao squares (55 calories per square.) Remember, cocoa is an antioxident so it's good for you (and, in my book, it's a vegetable because it comes from a "bean" - LOL) I also buy the no sugar added fudgsicles (40 calories for one) and the diet hot cocoa. I, too, use chocolate protein powder for my protein shakes which helps, also.

Now I just have to keep myself away from all that darn Easter candy I have hidden in the house which will be stuffed into those plastic eggs. So far so good!

Have you ever tried home exercise videos? They make a ton of different ones from beginner to advanced to kick boxing to step aerobics. I used to go to a gym but with small children it became difficult, so I have used exercise videos for years with great results. You can do them when you want, wearing what you want (you don't have to worry that your exercise outfit doesn't match - lol.)

Try going to Collagevideo.com You can search for videos by your fitness level and by what type of exercise you want to try. You can even watch a preview to see if it's really something for you.

Once you feel more comfortable, you can move onto that gym.

First congrats on that weight loss!

I use The Firm workouts alot and I just love them. Not sure which videos you're using (I probably have just about all of them - lol) Some are cardio with light weights which it sounds like you're using but they also make some that are more circuit training with heavier weights with cardio intervals incorporated into them. I like Total Muscle Shaping.

Your cardio program looks great... Just a few suggestions, though: If you're really interested in toning, you'll need to do more strength training work with heavier weights (4 pounds just won't cut it for toning in the long run.) Don't worry - you won't "bulk up" (women just aren't built to get that way unless you're on steroids - lol) Also, to build muscle, make sure you're eating enough protein for muscle repair and growth.

I was a cardio junkie for years and as I aged (now 44) I couldn't figure out why I just couldn't drop those extra pounds and was actually gaining. I thought I'd never do weights but once I did it really helped. Muscle will make you more toned and is metabolically more active and will help burn more calories naturally thoughout the day.

I also thought I had terrible knees and never thought I could do all those lunges, squats, etc but once I started working with weights esp on the hamstrings, it really helped to balance and support the quads I had over used so much over the years during my beloved step aerobics. Now my knees rarely bother me unless I've done something very high impact.

Weight Loss more calories Feb 09 2008
16:20 (UTC)

I'm in a similar boat, at least with age and calories. 5'3" age 44 small frame wanting to get to about 112 to 115. Just weighed this morning and am at 118.5 to 119 (depending on how I step on the scale - LOL - probably need a better scale!)

After eating anywhere from 1200 to 1500 cals a day depending on my exercise, I'm finally seeing the scale move after a month. I am overall "averaging" maybe a pound a week but it didn't just magically reflect that perfect pound after each week. I've noticed my pants getting looser, though.

The 40 something really makes it tough, doesn't it? Coupled with the fact that we are both very close to goal.

How long have you been trying at 1200 cals? You may need to give it more time. Do you exercise alot? If so, increasing those cals might be needed.

Good luck!

I am right there with you. I'm 5'3" age 44 about 120# (give or take a pound). My last child was born over six years ago and while I have lost the weight years ago, there is still this nagging 5 to 8 pounds (admittedly mostly cosmetic) that I've been trying for YEARS to lose and I swear it's all happily living around my hips. I've maintained my size and weight for years through consistent exercise and decent (although not perfect) eating. The tape measure just does not want to move down anymore around the hips and I do cardio, weights, interval training, etc.

I decided this was the year I will tackle these last 5 to 8 pounds and, hopefully, it will put a dent in the hips. What heathersquared said, unfortunately, is probably right. Could just be the bone structure now :o( Also, as females, our bodies so generously deposit fat around that area (always seemingly preparing to protect another pregnancy?) (shesh) I did read that in order to lose hip weight (which is usually the last to go) your eating has to be very clean and you must watch every bite you put in your mouth (yikes.) So here I am on CC.

Foods Protein Powder Jan 27 2008

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I haven't tried any of those brands so maybe there's still hope of finding a whey protein I can live with. I'm going to start experimenting with those.

stilltryin...None of those are dumb questions. Personally, I use protein powder, (that is, when I'm not gagging on it Smile), as a supplement post workouts esp after weight lifting. You need enough protein in your diet to help repair & build muscle which is metabolically more active. I'm certainly not a body builder or looking to "bulk" up, but just be more toned. I usually buy protein in 5 lb containers.

I agree with dm84 that lean foods are your best protein sources. You can still make a good, quick meal replacement packed with nutrients using protein powder, fruit, milk, yogurt etc. and putting it in a blender (smoothies). Better than donuts like dm84 said and also better than skipping a meal altogether. Or you can sprinkle it in yogurt or in oatmeal, etc., to help increase your protein intake.

Weight Loss antidepressants and weight loss Jan 24 2008
16:46 (UTC)
12

I have been on and off antidepressants since the age of 19 (am now 44) and my dr and I have come to the conclusion that it is just something I will need to control a chemical imbalance. I have been off them for pregnancies, other short stretches but always find my physical symptoms returning which are panic attacks along with the depression. My mother had panic attacks and my dad had depression so I'm just one big genetic mess -lol.

I am probably one of the few people that take the older tricyclic antidepressants (Doxepin) which are suppose to be more notorious for weight gain. The newer SSRI's never agreed with me - those GAVE me anxiety attacks. My dr. told me, at least for the tricyclics, the reason they cause weight gain is they block certain histamine receptors in the brain which causes an increase in hunger. (Not sure if this is true for SSRI's.)

All that being said, it IS possible to take weight off with antidepressants and keep it off as I am living proof. I am 5'3" and have lost weight on them and have been at a stable 120# for years (give or take a pound) while on antidepressants. I exercise regularly and try to watch what I eat - more so now that I've joined here because I want to FINALLY rid myself of those last 5 to 8 pounds that I've been trying to get rid of for YEARS - lol. Can you say plateau? There are times, however, I do want to blame that on the meds!

Also, what helps me is I take a slightly lower dosage probably because I do exercise and that helps depression in and of itself. My dr. said, at least with my meds, that dosage has a direct bearing on weight gain. If someone can still get benefits from a lower dose of meds, it might be worth a try.

Good luck everyone. You can do it.

Edit: Spelled "histamine" wrong
