I thought I was the only one to work out to Pink Floyd!  I also love Metallica (Black album or And Justice for All).  I will have to get The Who in my i-pod.

Fitness Runners: words of wisdom? Feb 27 2009

First of all--Yay You!  Just signing up for any race is an amazing feat that most people will never even try.  I have been running for several years and started at about the same pace as you.  My first race I was passed by both a race-walker and someone with a brace on his leg, so I know where you are coming from.  I've increased my speed but am still on the pokey side.  Since you only have two weeks don't change anything now--you don't want to get hurt!  Just enjoy the race.  And don't worry--there are always people on the sidelines cheering you on and many of the faster runners will be there to greet you when you cross the finish line.  They know what determination it takes just to finish.

I was feeling rotten about myself until I saw moonikins post (thank you!).  I'm 39 and my number is around 40.  I've been married for 7 years so hopefully this is my last!  But yeah, I had my fun in my earlier days!  Started at 16.

Pregnancy & Parenting Did anyone take a lamaze class? Oct 21 2008

I had a read a ton while I was pregnant, but I still felt that my lamaze class was valuable.  Also, my husband read NOTHING prior so this was a way for him to learn what would happen.  I did use the breathing techniques that I learned and since I had back labor the positions came in handy for pain control.   I think there is no such thing as too much information before labor--but no matter what you can't possibly be totally prepared.  It will be unlike anything you've ever done!

Fitness Pulled or Strained a muscle in my bum!! Can I exercise? Sep 03 2008
20:26 (UTC)

Ugh!  I feel your pain, literally!  I hurt the same area about 1 month ago and have still not returned to prior activity level.  I was having radiating pain, though, so I think it was my piriformis muscle (under the glut) that was tightening up and pressing on my sciatic nerve.  I have been stretching more than ever, getting massages, icing, and above all--very light exercise!  That is killing me because I've lost 20 pounds and reached my goal weight but I'm afraid that I will gain.  So far I haven't, but any time I try to run more than 15 minutes I pay for it for days.  Take it easy and gradually increase your exercise.  Not sure how old you are, I'm 38, so I know it will take longer than it would have at 16.  Good luck!

The Lounge Are you watching the RNC? Sep 03 2008

I'm trying to watch it.  I'm a progressive Democrat but I think it's important to hear all sides.  I agree that the Republicans look "programmed"--yes, they do look like they are square dancers!  I think it's hard to watch when you know you won't agree with most of what is said because I had no trouble watching the Democrats last week.  I doubt the convention wins any votes--I'd hate to think that Americans are so dumb that they believe the hoop-la of either party, but I'm sure many are.  I'm looking forward to the debates--that's where you really learn what the candidates are about.

I started this website in January because I had trouble sticking to anything longer than 2 weeks.  My original goal was to get to 135 (I'm 5'4") because I hadn't weighed that little since college.  I'm now at 127 (lost 20 pounds) and plan to stay right here.  I took it very slow, allowed days where I could eat more, and just tried to find some way I could stick with a "diet".  I am now maintaining easily because I didn't do anything drastic.  I allowed myself anything I wanted, but just had to eat reasonable portions and "make up for" the calories--either by eating less or exercising more.  I still consider whether the calories are worth it when I eat rather than just shovel in food because it's in front of me (my old way of eating).

Any of the Moosewood cookbooks are good and I find the recipes fairly easy.  I especially like the "Daily Special" on which is mostly soups and salads.

Fitness Sprint Triathlon Anyone? May 29 2008

I am doing my first sprint tri in August (I couldn't swim very good and have been taking lessons since January--now I just need to practice).  I'm trying to follow the schedule in "12week Triathlete".  Tonight I'm going on a bike ride with a group--this is forcing me to work out with others, I usually just like to go it alone since I'm pretty slow.

Weight Loss Comfort eating at night... May 21 2008

I was a night binger for years!  Now I tell myself that if I'm really hungry, I can eat a grapefruit.  They are so sweet and juicy and take a long time to eat (I peel them and eat them in sections, but you have to remove each membrane).  The taste doesn't make you crave something else when you are done.  Then I make a cup of tea and I feel pretty satisfied.

Foods What food do most people adore but you dispise? Apr 27 2008

Oatmeal, tapioca pudding, cream of wheat all disgust me.  I think it's the texture.  The other thing that I don't like are donuts--the combo of grease and sugar is just too much!

Foods How often do you eat dessert/get take-out? Apr 05 2008

I only eat dessert at home if I have a dinner party (maybe once a month).  I try to go out to eat or get take-out only once per week, but sometimes it's none and other weeks it is more.  I try to cook healthy meals at home as often as possible because I find it very easy to overeat other people's cooking!

Foods regular better than diet? Mar 21 2008

I just read an article about sugar in Women's Health magazine.  Aspartame doesn't "turn" to sugar, but studies have shown that when your body tastes something sweet it expects calories and when it doesn't get them from the diet soda you will make up for it elsewhere.  I also think that sometimes people drink diet soda so they can pig out on other foods.  I drink an occasional diet soda because I like the taste--regular soda is disgusting to me--but I have tried to limit myself to 2-3 per week.

You need to eat 3500 more than you burn to gain 1 pound, so relax! You are on vacation!  Try to eat things that give you pleasure--don't eat just because it's in front of you.  Try to get a little more activity into your day--go for a walk instead of just lying on the beach.  And remember that when you get home you can resume your healthy lifestyle!

Foods Going to Gourmet Burger Kitchen, which is lowest calorie choice? Mar 12 2008

Oh my god--they all sound so good!  I wish we had a place like that around here!  Anyway--pesto is usually a bad choice--lots of fat and calories.  The satay sauce probably is peanut--so high calorie.  Any of the cheeses will add more calories, too.  I would guess the lowest calorie would be the curry sauce and pineapple.  What is rocket?  But get something you would really enjoy--sometimes I get something higher calorie and just eat half of it.
Weight Loss 3 weeks and only 3 pounds Mar 11 2008

I started 9 weeks ago and have lost 9 pounds--I now weigh 136, the lowest I've been in 16 years!  (I'm 38).   I have never stayed on a "diet" this long before, and although I've lost more weight faster, it's always come back (and then some).  I'm trying to look at this as a lifestyle change--something I will do the rest of my life to maintain when I do reach my goal.  Just keep at it, gradual loss is the best way!
Fitness workout program question Feb 13 2008

It's good to mix it up.  You won't get bored as easily and your muscles won't accomodate to the exercise--and that makes them work harder.  You might want to try adding some intervals in with the glider, or do your own intervals by jumping rope for 1-2 minutes, then marching or jogging in place.  Intervals help burn more calories.  Maybe try doing strength training with body weight--pushups, squats, etc.  Good luck!
Fitness Weight training speed question Feb 06 2008

If you aren't able to complete all 12, but can do at least 8, you are probably lifting a decent amount of weight.  Normally, a fast pace with light weights is more for toning rather than strength building.  You might want to slow down a little to see if you still can't complete 12 reps.  When you are going very quickly you are concentrating more on fast twitch muscle fibers and may just be fatigueing these quickly.  I usually can finish my free weight workout in about 30 minutes by switching muscle groups so I need less rest between sets.
Weight Loss Overweight Waitresses? Wait... I don't get it!!! Jan 16 2008

I think it also depends on your age.  When I was 18 I waitressed at a pizza joint and ate that fattening food every day, drank lemonade with sugar my whole shift, and still lost weight.  I'm sure that now, 20 years later, I'd gain!  So enjoy it while it lasts!
