| Foods | Anyone hear of Himalayan salt? | Nov 12 2009 20:57 (UTC) |
3 |
My bf is pretty much a salt aficinado (sp?) and he got the Himalayan salt. He has worked in restaurants all of his life and was partially trained as a somelier so he has a really refined palate. He says that it is less salty and much more subtle than table salt. He says it is a good finishing salt because table salt has a tendency to have a punch of salt flavor and then fade when it is sprinkled on food. He says that the Himalayan salt is more mellow and consistant and will stay with the food until you are done chewing it. He says it is better at enhancing the flavors whereas table salt seems to cover them up more. He is a salt-a-holic and I can tell that there is a difference, but I don't know how accurate his description is. He might just be trying to sound cool.

I might have missed something, but maybe, in a weird f'ed up way they think they are helping you. They know you have anxiety about taking the bus, so they give you no other option than to take the bus and deal with the issue. Maybe they think that by forcing you to do things that your anxiety disorder will magically go away (instead of getting worse). I agree with lilsammi23, get some help and even medication to help the short term anxiety. I know it made a world of difference in not only my little sister (who can now drive on the highway during the day, got her first job and can go out by herself to places like Target). |

Oh and I forgot to mention that he has a Michelin star . . . I doubt that you eat food prepared by chefs who are Michelin rated all that often. So my advice, again, is just go and eat and enjoy yourself. |

Ok, you are eating at Wylie Dufresne's restaurant. He is one of the most innovative chefs out there and is the leader in molecular gastronomy. So I say go for it and eat as this will be a once in a lifetime event . . . unless you go there all of the time to eat. |

Collard greens and kale. I used to hate this stuff when I was a kid, but now I could eat it a couple of times a week. |

I'm pretty sure that they have lactose removed milk called Lactiad. My stepmom is lactose intolerant and she uses Lactaid pills everytime she has milk and she says it works perfectly. |

I believe the browning is caused by oxygenation. I don't know if this will work, but what if you got one of those vacuum sealer things with reusable bags (less waste) and tried vacuum sealing them? I have a reynolds brand one and it works pretty darn well for meat. I think I'll try it for cut avocados. |

I drink water straight out of the tap in the winter, but once it gets to be warmer, the water starts to taste like Lake Erie which is pretty gross. I usually filter my water during the summer to reduce the algae taste. |

I don't think anyone has said this, so I will: You will remember the first time for the rest of your life. My little sister had sex for the first time with a friend (they had been friends for about 1 1/2 years before they started dating) after they had been dating for about a month. He broke up with her and came out of the closet three weeks later. So really think it over because it will affect your friendship and you will remember it when you are 60. |

Wouldn't you be a little happy if you were paired up with a hot guy at work? But would it mean that you loved your bf any less or would even think about cheating on him? And, maybe the colleague he was talking to is one of the isn't she hot type of guys and your bf knew this and responded accordingly. So, basically I wouldn't mention anything and just try to do something fun with him to remember how much you love him and he loves you. |

| The Lounge | Is Shampoo Bad for Your Hair? | Apr 27 2009 14:11 (UTC) |

I stopped using shampoo around a year ago and it is the best thing I have ever done for my hair. I have pretty curly hair and my sister gave me The Curly Girl book. I ended up tweaking the method a little, but conditioner only washing works wonders for me. My hair is less frizzy and I don't have problems with oily hair. I get stopped at least once a week by people who compliment me about my hair. Even people with curly hair want my hair. If anyone wants more details, feel free to PM me. |

In the wise words of Trent Reznor (NIN), love is not enough. There is so much more that goes into a relationship than love. He could love you more than anything else in the whole world. But if he is a controlling a**hole, then there isn't enough love in the world to make his actions and words acceptable. And ask yourself this. Can you imagine dealing with those type of comments and his jealousy over your friends, especially male friends for the rest of your life? If you feel bad now, imagine how much worse it will be in 10 years. Not only will the abuse and control be worse, but it will be so much harder to leave. If not, then it is time to move on. He won't change unless he admits he has a problem and is willing to seek professional help figuring out why he is the way he is and how he can change. And reading about how you talk about him, I'm guessing that you would be pretty scared to talk to him about how he is controlling and he needs help. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. My sis went through some bad relationships, but she got out. And guess what, she just got proposed to in Hawaii over looking a beautiful volcano by someone who is caring, sweet, supportive, the list goes on. You deserve better and he is out there. In the meantime, can you move in with your mom for awhile so you have some support to deal with getting away from him and dealing with the abuse he put you through? And if he starts harassing you, get a restraining order immediately.

Go to an Apple store and tell them what happened. They should be able to get the current songs off of your iPod and give them to you so you can reload them into iTunes and then back onto your iPod. If you don't have an Apple store near you, call their customer support line 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273). |

I think a lot of this could be cleared up if people just stopped saying gay marriage. Civil Unions (or whatever you want to call them) are something completely different. They are a legal contract that is regulated by state governments which should be open to any consenting adult without discrimination. If we called it something other than "marriage" then the churches would have no right to stick their noses in state business where it doesn't belong. And if someone wants to get married in a particular church, then it would be up to that individual to prescribe to that church's doctrines and beliefs. |

First, I am so sorry for your loss. It is going to be hard, but with support you'll get through it. Please seek help in whatever form you think will help you. Whether it be talking to a close friend, getting therapy or even writing in a journal. It will make it so much easier. Is there a school conselor that you can talk to? They can help you find a grief conselor. They can also help you deal with the guilt you are feeling about his death and help you realize that it was out of your control and in no way your fault. The first couple of months are actually kind of the easiest in a weird way, at least for me it was when my stepmom passed. It hadn't actually sunk in yet and I was kind of mentally numb. It wasn't until a couple of months later when things came crashing down. The first christmas was the hardest. |

| The Lounge | Should they be forced to seek help? | Apr 16 2009 16:48 (UTC) |
3 |
No, they shouldn't be forced. No alcoholic or drug addict is going to give up their habit unless they want to. And the programs that are out there for people who do want help are seriously lacking. My bf had (I guess always will, one is never really an ex-alcoholic) a serious problem with alcohol. He went through detox, but was not in a position to go to inpatient rehab. But he is finding it hard to stay sober even with the BS group sessions that they recommended, so he is trying to get into rehab. He may not be able to go in because he has been sober for 4 months instead of fresh out of detox. It is getting to the point where I'm ready to tell him to drink for a couple of weeks so he can go back to detox and get into rehab. Seems like a pretty backwards way of getting help. So instead of wasting money on people who don't want to change, the current system should be completely overhauled so those people who do want help are able to get the support and treatment they need. |

| The Lounge | eyebrow and cartilage piercings-- advice | Apr 14 2009 20:27 (UTC) |

I've had my rook, conch, anti-tragus and both tragi (in order of decreasing pain, the rook is supposed to be the most painful piercing and I might agree) and I guess what everyone is calling "cartilage". First, make sure you go to a reputable piercing studio! Even if they are more expensive. Second, the piercing itself doesn't hurt that much. It is over in a couple of seconds. What does hurt is cleaning it the next day, and hitting it with the phone, and getting it caught in your hairbrush/comb, etc. I would say the worst pain is the next day cleaning, but for cartilage, it isn't that bad. Similar to an ear lobe. If you have any questions please ask a professional at a piercing studio. They will be able to tell where the least painful cartilage piercing is located. |

Please don't use heat on your back without consulting a doctor. I used to put heat on my back when I would throw it out and it turns out that it was only making my problem worse. My doctor told me that heat can make things worse, but that ice never hurts. Also, I would definitely stay away from exercise until you feel better. Would you exercise if you sprained your ankle? |

My bf and I never plan on getting married. But we both don't really believe in marriage. If I wanted to get married and he refused, I would leave. Marriage is too big of a thing not to have if you want it. It isn't like you want a fish and he doesn't want one. This is something you will think about for the rest of your life. I even asked him if he would get married if I wanted it and he said yes, without a doubt if it was that important. If he really loved you and wanted to stay with you he would get married. Maybe he just doesn't want the big, traditional wedding. Can you just sign papers? Would he be more comfortable with that or a really small ceremony? |

| Weight Loss | Wake up at 4:30am for Cardio? | Apr 09 2009 18:06 (UTC) |

My rule of thumb is if it is never light at that time of day during any time of the year, then it is night time. And I only wake up during the night for emergencies and to catch planes (and to potty). I am not a morning person though. I'm forced to wake up at 5:45 because they moved my job to a little town 65 miles from where I live and the people I carpool with want to leave at 6:45 in the morning so we can get to work at 8:00. |

I don't wait. I like sex . . . a lot. And if he isn't good then I usually end it because I don't want to spend time training him. Cruel, I know, but at this point in my life I like a guy who knows what he is doing. And as for my current bf . . . I picked him up in the bar and he knew what he was doing. |

I actually heard about brown fat on NPR this morning. According to the NPR segment, you have to sit in a 60 degree environment for the brown fat to start burning a significant amount of calories. Basically, I think, brown fat starts burning 15x more calories when the body has to produce a significant amount of its own body heat. If I heard it incorrectly (I was half asleep), then please correct me. |

You took an important first step, you realized that you have a problem. And don't feel bad about living at home. I live with my dad as well. He had a lot of extra room and offered it because he knows how tough it is out there right now. Also, my bf is currently battling his on going addiction to alcohol and other things. He has already gone through detox and is getting ready to go into rehab. He just got so sick of it controlling his life. And he knew he would never have the kind of life he wanted unless he did something about his problems. He is doing so much better. So please, check yourself into rehab and start getting some professional help. You don't have to go through this alone. You would be suprised at how many people are and have been in your situation. |
