Weight Loss Is it possible to go out to dinner and NOT consume 800-900 calories?? May 08 2008

The biggest thing that helps me is trying to look up the nutritional facts before I ever enter the restaurant and already selecting my dinner option. Most bigger restaurants have a website with nutritional facts for all the menu options available. That way I know exactly what I'm putting in my mouth and I can plan ahead for that day. Also, if someone orders an appetizer, and you know the nutritional value ahead of time, it helps resist the temptation. I have found that even a lot of salads and soups can be deceiving, even if they sound healthy.

If that's not an option, i simply make up my own meal. Most restaurants don't mind, and the manager is able to price it for you. My favorite is salmon or chicken grilled in olive oil and two veggies they have available. Ask them to leave out the butter or anything with which they may normally season the item.

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you about your goal being ambitious, but if you are burning 1800 calories in a day and only eating 1200... I don't know what your diet history is like, but your body could be in starvation mode and holding onto everything you give it. If I were you, I would up my calorie intake by 100-200 calories, and really jump up my activity level. Working out is something you can always control. Make sure you are eating 4-5 small meals throughout the day, and zigzag your calories. Try eating 1400 calories one day, and 1200 the next, then going back up to 1300. Keep your calorie deficit at 500 calories per day. This will keep your body from thinking it is starving and it will continue to burn. It will probably be really slow progress, still, for at least a couple of weeks. I hope this helps.

Woohoo Weigh In Day!

Starting: 247.5

Last week: 245

Today: 242.5

I've lost 2.5 lbs, and I'm so excited. And for the junkfood junkies like me, let me share with you... I weigh in first thing in the morning, every morning actually, because i can handle the fluctuation as long as I see the progression I can compare it to the big picture. This morning I was so psyched about my weight loss the first thing I think of is treating myself. So my friend and I are choosing a lunch place, and we both want Mexican so badly. I read up on the chicken fajitas, 851 calories, which i can have 1800 in a day so not bad.... yeah except they are 29g of fat! Ugh, no thanks, I don't think i've had 30 g of fat in a day since I started dieting. So I talked her into going to a little grille so I can get a veggie burger with asparagus (415 calories, 7 g of fat) and she can still have a Mexican dish, so I was soooo proud of myself for resisting the temptation and weighing the options. Once you start to see the pay off (and gosh, i've only lost 5 lbs total, so it's quick) you don't want to go back, it's just not worth it. And it really pays to do your research before you put it into your mouth! Use your food log!

Anyways, I hope everyone's weigh-in goes well, and welcome to all the new people!

Oh, and laurieellen, I wouldn't think that 120 lbs is unrealistic for your height, but honestly I would wait until I got close to my goal range and see if 120 is the best for you. Your body has a naturally healthy weight it will gravitate toward anyways, and it may be really hard and unhealthy to maintain that weight, or it may be just right. If it feels good to say you are aiming for 120, i say go for it.

I save about 200 calories for a snack(up to, i don't always eat the full 200), and I like to save that time for my sweet tooth, since that is when I tend to crave sweets. I usually do a piece of fruit, a 100 calorie pack, 100 calorie Jell-O chocolate pudding snacks, or a cup of yoplait yogurt with a little bit of Naked pure granola in apple cinnamon(roughly 130 cal together depending on how much granola you use). All of those are really satisfying for me and help me be ready to eat a healthy dinner. I also like the special K bars, and if I'm doing my workout just after work and before dinner, I eat one of those just before I hit the gym. It's the perfect energizer snack to get you through your workout!

OKay my first weigh in. Wednesday i was 247.5

 Today 245.

Yay! 2 lbs!

Congrats to everyone who lost this week, especially Brett, I bet that was a big hurdle to cross! This is really helping me keep up my focus, knowing i'm accountible each week and am telling people about it.

Unsupportive housemates... I've honestly dealt with that since I started college when i was 17 until even now, when i'm 24, my roommate THINKS she doesn't have to watch what she eats. Honestly, all I can say is, I know how you feel. I couldn't fight that battle until I was somewhat separated from those people just by growing into life. My current roommate and I don't spend a lot of time together. I've found one really helpful tool is to challenge them. Tell them they can't go for an entire month drinking just water and make a game out of it. Maybe that will take a little bit of the strain off if they take the bait.

So I just joined this site today, and wow lucky me to find such a great forum. A little about me, My name is Tara, I'm 5'8", 24 years old, and I have struggled with weight most of my life, going through fat periods and thin periods, so I know the feeling both ways. In college I was overweight but overall pretty healthy, just after I went through some major stressful times and my weight topped off at 267 lbs. I got going January 2006 and managed to drop 50 lbs by June 2006 doing a low carb (but in hindsight I think it was more low calorie) diet. However, more life changes, moving in with skinny roommates who ate their weight in food everyday, i gained back to 249 lbs, which is close to where i am today.

I decided the low-carb thing was iffy on health and temporary at best, and I really want to make a life change and stop yo-yoing. I want to feel whole, healthy, and feel my age. I have a very active life-style when you consider I work two jobs and manage to keep up with most of my friends, however, I need to make a healthy change for me, which is what I'm doing. Today I'm weighing in at 247, and would love to join the weekly weigh-in, so I guess I will see you all Friday. And thank you all for sharing your stories, it's really hard to for me to open up and talk about my weight, it's been a very sensitive subject for me my entire life. But I think that's just the change and accountibility i need, so really, thanks.

Mine are:

99% fat free Yoplait Yogurt, cherry and key lime

Kashi- cereal and wheat waffles

Organic Fat-free milk

Yogi fasting tea

Progresso soups- highly recommend minestrone, but typically the ones marked "best-life" approved, does the work for me (200 cal, can't beat that)

Ezekiel 4:9 sprout bread, plenty of turkey, baby spinach, tomatoes, and alfalfa sprouts for sandwiches

fresh strawberries, blackberries, oranges, apples, grapefruit, and pears (typically 2 of this list per week)

cabbage (love it)

orange juice

Slim fast optima bars in chocolate chip chewy granola or Special K meal bars

100 calorie snacks chips ahoy

Weight Control Instant Oatmeal

Canned or steam-bag veggies like broccoli, turnip greens, asparagas, etc.

This gets me through the week usually, if i have plenty of water. Most lunches I eat out at subway or get a nice grilled fish and veggies combo somewhere.

I agree. As long as you buy items that fit you now, and not your 20 lbs-from-now self, I'm guessing you are going to still feel great. And just think, it gives you another shopping experience to look forward to this spring when you do hit your goal weight! This is YOUR day.. don't let a few lbs ruin it for you... And Congratulation on getting married :)
