New Members Hi! I am new. Nice to meet you all! I hear this is a great support system!? Nov 07 2008

Welcome, and good luck to you!  The people here are so nice and knowledgable; I hope you enjoy the site as much as I have. :)

As a suggestion, though - I think you SHOULD take a picture of yourself.  You don't need to show it to anyone, but once you've lost some weight you can compare photos to remind yourself how far you've come.  I find it motivating - you might too. :)

Health & Support Question?? Nov 07 2008

Am I the only one that feels irritated at this topic?  Loving your body is great, and I hope everyone can achieve what the OP has, but I think it's going too far to call people with body-image issues "downright pathetic."  Not all of us have gorgeous features or are complimented on our smiles often... and some of the girls and boys on here have terrible problems in their lives to deal with and their way of coping is through food.  It's not good, and I don't promote it at all, but honestly I don't think you should belittle the self-loathing and emotional pain a girl feels when she really does think she's disgusting at a size 4. We're all trying to help promote feeling beautiful and being healthy here, but don't go so far as to label those with problems "pathetic."

I know that was likely not your intent, though, so don't take that too harshly.  Your intentions were positive and there ARE a lot of beautiful, confident ladies on this site... it's just the vocal minority that you're getting overwhelmed by.

I don't know why anyone would pick to be "thin and unhappy".  You're unhappy, that's all there is to it.

While I would LIKE to be "thin and happy" I would DEFINITELY pick "fat and happy" over unhappy any day.

Weight Loss Breast size? Nov 06 2008

Honestly, there's pretty much nothing that you can do to change where the fat comes off.  I'm one of those freaks that has a 32DD / 34D breast at 106 lbs.  To tell the truth, I wish I had a C or B... but we all wish for what we don't have, right?

If you do end up losing from your breasts, the only thing I can suggest is investing in some flattering bras - push up, padded, etc that help to balance you out.  Pectoral exercises might help with perkiness, but only to a minor extent.

Good luck - here's to hoping you don't lose from the breasts!

perhaps as soon as you're feeling crappy and realize that you want food, get out a journal.  write out your thoughts and what EXACTLY is making you feel bad.  then write out how you don't want to hurt yourself more by binging - instead, brainstorm solutions to the problem or at least get your feelings out on paper. hope this helps

Don't fall victim to "wasting" food.  Saving leftovers from a dinner can be a good way to space out calorie intake over days, but not if it's too tempting to resist them!  Additionally, if there is food that is about to go bad in the fridge, don't rush to eat it no matter what it is.  Yes, try to be frugal, but don't get neurotic about it.  Think - yes, you're "wasting" food by not eating it, but isn't it an even worse outcome if you DO eat it?  Then you're essentially wasting it anyway - you're putting excess into your body that you never wanted to have to begin with.  Besides, it's all poop and fat in the end... better in the trash than in the toilet or on your thighs!

It's actually been quite easy for me... I don't really party, so I suppose that helps... but the best things are 1) i can plan my own meals and meal times; 2) i have a gym routine and go to fun active classes like kickboxing and yoga; and 3) i keep busy enough that i'm not too preoccupied by food.

I don't know what your lifestyle is like, but I am loving how easy it is to watch my weight in college and I hope you can have an easy time too!

Fitness yoga & other stuff that will help me gain a few inches? :/ Oct 22 2008

The only explanation for any height gain, I presume, would be from posture.  If your spine is stronger and straighter, perhaps you will be able to sit and stand to your maximum fight.

But really, height is just genetics and posture can only get you so far.

Young Calorie Counters Anyone else trying to lose weight during college? Oct 22 2008

I'm finding it easier than ever to lose weight.  The gym is only a short walk away, I can plan all my own meals and meal-times, and I have a budget to work with that assures I won't splurge it on too much food.

It's going home for holidays that I'm worried about!  Not only will there be a kitchen full of YUM nearby, but there will be thanksgiving dinner and christmas cookies and treats galore... eep.

Motivation Who in your life motivates you? Oct 21 2008

My boyfriend motivates me to some extent, but the rest... it's all self-motivation.  I honestly don't even know why I am so determined to lose weight.  All I know is that I can look BETTER and I have the means to make it happen, by counting calories and exercising.  I guess I'm media-influenced but hey, it's a positive change at least and I'd rather be doing this than scarfing down fried foods and ice cream all day on the couch...

Weight Loss 5'2''ers what size are you? Oct 20 2008

I'm a size 2/3, although I occasionally fit a size 1.

I'd rather not though.  I don't like having no hips!  I'm very top-heavy with measurements of 33.5 - 25.5 - 31.5.

Not to mention the muffin-top.  Yeah, I have slim hip-bones but then a lovely bunch of flab sitting right on top. xD

Young Calorie Counters Anyone around 5'1?? Oct 19 2008
16:59 (UTC)

Hi there.  At 115 and 5'1", you are at a healthy weight already!  However, I am not far off from your weight, height, and age (5'1.5", 107.5 lbs, and 18 years old) and I know I'll be stopping at 105.  For a girl my height (which is only 1/2 an inch taller than you!) 100 lbs is a BMI of 18.6... any more, and I'd be underweight.

For you, similarly, 100 lbs is a BMI of 18.9 - very close to the underweight "cut-off" of 18.5.  Furthermore, at 95 lbs you'd be VERY underweight and unhealthy... a BMI of 17.9!  :(

So - you're having trouble losing weight because you are very close to, if not already at, the point where your body is healthiest.  I urge you not to lose more than 10 lbs... if you are still unhappy with your body, strength training and muscle toning can help your body to look tighter and fitter.

Best of luck with staying healthy and reaching more reasonable goals.  Please do not undereat!  Teenagers are supposed to have 1500 calories a day at least.

Weight Loss Spin Class weight loss anyone? Oct 16 2008
18:20 (UTC)

I do spin classes twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  Like any exercise, it will help you to lose weight if you pair it with a calculated reduced calorie diet.  However, you get out of it what you put in - pay attention to your heart rate and your perceived exertion levels.  The harder you work at it, the more calories you will burn, the stronger your heart will be, and the more muscled your legs will get.

Have fun and good luck!

Young Calorie Counters College freshman---Is it okay NOT to drink? Oct 15 2008
13:45 (UTC)

It's my first year in college and I've barely done any drinking.  People don't seem to care too much.  Sure, you can't play beer pong, really, but you can still hang out with everyone and laugh and watch other people do crazy stuff.  You should be fine.  If you feel pressured, though, you could just walk around with a beer can in your hand and not really do any more than take tiny sips out of it or whatever.

Good luck!

Young Calorie Counters Increasing Calorie Intake Oct 13 2008
23:12 (UTC)

Well, since you're doing this in one day... you simply have to eat 2000 calories.  If you can't because you're too full, then eat calorie-dense foods like nuts, nut butters, dried fruit, cheese, red meats... and stuff like that.  900 is unhealthy so I'm glad , at least, that you see that you need to increase.

Weight Loss Are u a day eater or a night eater? Oct 13 2008
02:39 (UTC)

I'm a day-eater.  A morning-eater, really.  My schedule usually goes like this:

~500 calories by 10:30 am.

~900 calories by 2:00 pm.

~1300 calories by 5:30 pm.

And then I am done.  I tell myself not to eat, and I don't.  And that's that.

Young Calorie Counters anyone else more interested in inches than pounds? Oct 12 2008
14:18 (UTC)

I've always viewed inches and pounds as different parts of the same goal, but ultimately I just want my midsection to get SMALLER.  Whatever does that will be the best for me - so losing inches is my main concern.  However, it seems that measurements and pounds OFTEN (although not always) go hand in hand, so I use both as guidelines for the most part.

Young Calorie Counters do you want kids one day? Oct 12 2008

I would love to have one or two children, and I always have.  Yes, losing pregnancy weight will suck, but I feel like it's a great part of life that I wouldn't want to miss out on.  Sure, it won't all be wonderful and it will certainly be costly, but it will be a wonderful way to spend a good twenty years of my life.  Parenting is hard, I'm sure, and yet I know that I would like the challenge.

I've been losing for a while, not binging or overeating, and I still only lose 0.5 - 1 lb per week.  Oh well.  I guess it's because I'm close to my body's preferred goal weight. :)
