| The Lounge | A very bold cat | Mar 20 2008 13:16 (UTC) |

We adopted our kitty, Leo, back in October. He's a 3 1/2 year old tabby but already weighed 16 lbs when we got him. We feed him 1/3 a can of Friskies in the morning, 1/3 at supper time, and then a couple scoops at bedtime. We also leave about 1/4 cup of dry food in his dish throughout the day. He barely touches the dry stuff but is also ravenous for the wet food! He acts EXACTLY the same way as Mike!!!! He starts attempting to wake us up at 4 am every morning and seems to use a different strategy every day....anything from getting a cold, wet nose in the ear to running his paws up and down the blinds (very LOUD) to literally jumping on the bed (like a 3 year old child) and/or attacking our feet. I have no idea how to get him to stop either. I grew up with dogs and will admit that I am clueless about cats! Our vet assured us that he is eating the right amount, so I don't think over/undereating is an issue. It is nice to know that Leo isn't the only one out there doing this though! Please let me know if you figure anything out! |

Good Job! 4.6 miles is fantastic!! May I ask how you built up your endurance? intervals? I used to run a few years ago and am trying to get back into it. I've decided to work towards running in the 10K classic on July 20th, 2008, here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada). I can only run for approximately 5 mins at a time (with walking inbetween), but I figure it's a good goal to work towards. Actually, does anyone want to train with me? Work towards running 10K by July?? hmmmm, might even post this as a forum!

Wow, I was starting to think that I was the only tall woman using this website!! I am so glad I found this thread! I love being tall and wouldn't change my height for the world, but I do get a little tired of the ignorant comments every now and then (especially from short men!!). But it doesn't stop me from wearing heels when I go out!! At my highest I was 180lbs. I am currently 5'10, 170lbs, and am aiming for 160lbs. I hit 153 lbs a few years ago, but I was playing ball 6 days a week, running 3-4 days a week, weighting lifting, and living off of fruit and sandwiches. I don't have the time to be that intense anymore and wouldn't be able to maintain that weight in a healthy way. As for clothes, I live in a small city in Canada and the only store that carries long dress pants (that don't cost $$$$) is Ricki's. You can check it out (www.rickis.com) if you want. I also have a fun time finding tops that fit as I have a long torso and a big chest. The seam that is supposed to run UNDER your breasts always sits too high and the shirts are always too short. Where do you guys buy tops? We have a Tall Girl here, but the clothes look like they came from my grandma's closet...lol. |

| Fitness | Athletes blood pressure and resting heart rate, what are your numbers? | Feb 13 2008 16:05 (UTC) |
19 |
Hey jillmenow, I am an RN and tend to come across many hypertensive patients. A resting heart rate of 62 and BP of 126/54 are wonderful numbers! I would not be concerned at all with these numbers. Many sources say that 120/80 is a normal BP for the average person, but there is a whole spectrum of values that we consider normal. We always look at the bottom number first (diastolic- pressure in your arteries when the heart is at rest) and don't start to worry until the bottom number is over 90. The top number measures the pressure when your heart is contracting and we usually don't start getting worried until this number is in the 150-160 range. If you notice a higher BP >140/90, document the numbers and what you were doing at the time. Book a check up with your doctor and try to monitor your numbers to see if they are consistently high. Your doctor may not treat your BP if it was high only on one occasion. However, if there is a pattern of several high BPs, then your doctor will most likely start you on a treatment plan. Low blood pressures are fine as well, especially if you are cardiovascularly fit. However, if you have a low BP and are experiencing symptoms such as dizziness and blurred vision on a couple occasions then I would get checked out by your doctor. In most cases it usually just means that you are dehydrated, but it never hurts to check! Sorry for the long reply, but I just wanted to let you know that you don't need to worry. I applaud you for monitoring your BP and your health especially if there is a family history. Keep up the good work!! |

| I am sooo pumped right now....I just need to share this good news!!! A personal trainer just opened a new gym across the street from my house and I went for a fitness test this morning. I thought I would would bomb the tests as I'm not nearly as in shape as I used to be. I scored good to excellent on everything (except flexibility...lol). He also told me that my goal weight of 155 (set by a previous trainer) is too low for the amount of muscle I have and I should be aiming for 160 instead....which means I only have 8 more lbs to go! I am so excited to find out that I am closer to my goal than I thought...definitely rev's up the motivation again! | |||

This is a short amount of time as well as an isolated incident. Your doctors and nurses will take good care of you to prevent any harm to your body. You will have an IV to keep your electrolytes in balance and to keep you well hydrated. Your doctor may even order an IV fluid with a little bit of sugar (but that is up to him and also depends on your health history...i.e. diabetic?) If this question is really bothering you, please don't hesitate to bring it up with you doctor/nurse during the pre-op visit. Take care and concentrate on getting lots of rest during your recovery. You are in good hands with your health care team and you'll be back on your feet before you know it! |

btw, went dress shopping this weekend. Normally I wear a size 10-12. They were sizing me as a 14 for my dress!!! I nearly fainted as I thought I lost all my progress, but today I saw that I lost a pound. Anyone else experience this?? |

Success!!! I did it! I did cardio and weights this morning! I am sooo excited. Btw, hip hop class is soooo much fun. We were even breaking a sweat during the warm up. I highly recommend it to anyone out there looking for something a little different. And, it's through the community association so it's affordable too (very NB since I am also a grad student). I even managed to follow the routine and the only training I have is doing the bird dance and polkas at family weddings with my great uncle Wilbert...lol. |

In response to your questions to everyone, undertherainbow..... People always seem to freak when they find out that I'm trying to lose weight. They start trying to convince me that I am beautiful just the way I am, I don't need to lose any weight, I'm heavier because of muscle, etc. I always thank them for the compliments but then feel the need to explain myself (which I shouldn't really have to, but I do). I am an apple shape so any weight I gain goes directly to my abdomen resulting in a little bit of a belly. People who tend to gain weight around their middles are more likely to experience coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes (just to name a few) later in life. I've seen too many people in my family battle these very preventable diseases and I will end up in the same situation if I continue to make the choices I have in the past year. PLUS, I am an RN and assist others to achieve their optimal health. Shouldn't I apply my skills and knowledge to keep myself healthy as well? I'm not really "dieting" but making better lifestyle choices and staying active. My height hides any weight gain/loss quite well so losing 20 lbs won't be a drastic difference for me. I will just be healthier now and in the long run. People usually agree with me after all that but I sometimes get a little tired of defending my decision to be healthier. |

Good job on making it to the gym, chris 1208! I am also proud of myself as I went to the gym with my bf last night and went through a killer leg routine with him. Not only did I feel fantastic afterwards (even though my legs felt a little rubbery..lol), I also feel motivated to go back!!! YAY! My friends and I have our first hip hop class tonight so I am not going to the gym today as we should have a good ab workout from laughing. We're not the most coordinated group of girls when it coming to dancing. |

Right now it is in the -20's but feels like -30 C with the windchill. We usually get one really cold week where it is -30 but feels like -40. It hasn't happened yet and I'm hoping Mother Nature has forgotten this year...lol. It is definitely a challenge to keep active in the winter time especially when all you want to do is cuddle under a blanket to keep warm instead of venturing outside to plug in your car to go to the gym! Broomball and Sno-pitch (softball in the snow) is always a blast on milder days. Any one else live up north? Any other suggestions for winter activities to keep active? |

Fantastic idea!! I am near the top end of the healthy BMI range and am wanting to shed some pounds and gain back some strength. I am female, 29 years old, 5'10, and 173 lbs. I am aiming to lose about 20 lbs but won't be heartbroken if I don't make it all the way. As long as I feel good and don't feel like I need an oxygen mask just to run a few feet...lol. I am getting back into the active lifestyle. My friends and I love to play sports like softball (indoor and outdoor), frisbee, touch football, and try to take a new dance class every winter. I go to the gym approx. once a week and would like to get into my old routine (running 3-4 x's per week and weight training 3 x's per week). My motivation just isn't there yet. I have good intentions and pack my gym bag at night, but just can't get out of bed in the morning (maybe cuz I live in Saskatchewan and it is beyond cold right now) and I'm too exhausted by the end of the day to go. Any suggestions on how to get my butt out of bed???? |
