Weight Loss tall club 5'10'' and over ladies who want to lose 20-30 lbs... join me for weekly weigh-ins and motivation!! Jan 18 2009

Hey ladies! It was a so-so week for me. Lost 2 pounds but was hoping for a few more. I keep having to remind myself that 2 pounds per week is the right way to do this.

It's just a little frustrating. I had gotten down to 188 after losing 88 pounds. After this Fall and some serious personal issues at home I bounced back up to 215. I think I'm just so anxious to get back to where I was...I want to get it done now.

Anyway...back on the right track. Weight loss feels so good! This time last year I was on blood pressure meds, getting ready to start meds for diabetes, and was suffering with PCOS, which causes REALLY irregular periods. Now, I am off all meds and my monthly visitor is always right on time. I feel good. Hopefully with the motivation from you ladies I can get to the goal I set for myself this time last year.

I've thought about trying zig-zagging. Sometimes I think I do it unintentionally. What is the reason behind its success?

Hey Ladies! I would love to join! I'm 5'11" and currently at 210. I started CC a year ago at 276, got down to 189 and then bounced back up this Fall after some personal issues at home. But I'm back on track and want to lose the rest to get to my ultimate goal of 180. My goal is a lot higher than some of yours, but I am also 38 with 4 kids, a single mom, and I teach full-time. (Teachers are the worst about bringing food into the break room! Aaahhh!)

Trying to keep on track, but it's hard when chasing kids the way I do. It's also frustrating when I hear people talk about losing weight if they are, like, a size 6. But I also realize different people have different goals for themselves.

Also, I am trying to find some "me" time in my busy day. Got any ideas about how I can recharge and spend at least 30 minutes each day for me?

Started with CC on January 4 of this year at 276. Now, 31 weeks later, I'm at 198 for a total weight loss of 78 pounds. I don't think I'd have done as well as I have without CC. I've learned it's not about dieting...it's about a lifestyle change. I've learned I can manage to squeeze in 3 or 4 days of exercise, even with 4 kids and a full-time teaching job. I've learned that I can substitute for a snack cake with strawberries and feel good about it. I've learned about starvation mode, and that you don't always have to be hungry to lose weight. I've learned that my body needs food and that withholding it isn't beneficial. I've learned that I need to take longer looks at what I eat.

For anyone like me, losing weight and being healthy probably won't ever be a walk in the park, but it can be done. I'm proof.

I also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I was diagnosed 4 years ago because of my irregular periods, excess body and facial hair, and numerous cysts on my ovaries. After much reading I've learned that for people like me, when we are overweight (to make a long story short), the pituitary gland starts to produce too much testosterone. This causes an imbalance with the hormones, and it disrupts a person's normal cycle. It also causes some of the other symptoms.

I can happily say that after a 78-pound weight loss, my periods are fairly regular and most of the excess hair has disappeared. As much as I like the regular periods, I think I like the loss of the hair the most. I know that from my perspective, every time that I've wanted an unhealthy snack and managed to not eat...every time has been worth it. It's been hard and I'm not done, but I'm definitely a lot healthier.

Take Care and Good Luck!

I'm 5'10'' and 37 years old. I started CC in January of this year. My weight loss has went in spurts, with some weeks being much better than others. I started out at 276, and now I'm at 198, with a total weight loss of 78. I still have 18 to go, so I'm not done yet.

My weight loss has increased my self-confidence, but more importantly it has made me healthier. I am no longer on my blood-pressure medicine. Also, my doctor was ready to put me on metformin because I was beginning to show signs of being diabetic. Now things have turned around and my blood sugar numbers are staying down. I am a classic, textbook case of what being overweight can do to your health, and also what a difference it can make when you lose weight and eat healthy. I credit CC for helping me to keep track of what I eat. I love the analyzer that looks at what I've eaten and breaks it down. It's been great.

Good luck and keep going!

Weight Loss Tall Girls?? Jul 15 2008

I'm another tall girl. I'm 5'11". I started out on this weight loss journey in January at a weight of 276. After 6 and a half months, I'm down 77 pounds. I've hit my first goal. which was 200, but I still have 19 to go to hit my next goal. I'm a little frustrated this week because my weight loss has slowed down to about a pound a week. I know I should expect his, but my biggest motivator so far has just been the weight loss itself. Whenever I would lose some, I would be motivated to keep going. Also, I am now off my blood pressure medication and metformin (to control my blood sugar). I need a new motivator. It's kind of hard because my husband's hours at work have been cut in half this summer, so money is tight. Most of the motivators cost money (i.e. a pedicure, new clothes, a night out). I've tried mixing up my exercise routine, but so far it's not worked.

I also agree with what everyone is saying here. Not only am I tall, but I have long arms and wide shoulders. I may be wrong, and if anyone out there disagrees, please let me know, but I've always felt that girls that are shorter (like 5'4" to 5'7") can be a little heavier and still look cute. Whenever I'm heavy, I feel sort of manly, or like a huge tree. I know that if I was shorter, and the weight I am now, I definitely wouldn't look the same because I am able to spread out my weight some. But I've always hated being tall!  Now that I've lost the weight, I feel a little better about it.  But I still have a long way to go.

Weight Loss Starvation mode myth Jun 19 2008

2

It may sound crazy, but it's the truth. I started out on this little weight loss journey eating around 1200 calories a day. I lost quickly for the first month. Then I hit a period of about three weeks where I didn't lose a thing. I started reading up on "Starvation Mode" here on CC, and increased my calorie intake to about 1500. It took about another week and a half, but the weight started coming off again. 50 some-odd pounds later, I'm still going. I realized I didn't have to be unhappy and hungry all the time.

Also, we started "The Biggest Loser" at work. Another of the ladies was complaining because she'd been losing quickly eating 800 calories a day, and then the weight loss stopped. I told her what I'd learned, she started eating more, and ended losing (I think) 37 pounds. She won the entire contest. (It was calculated using percentages.)

I have to brag. Our group of 20 ladies lost over 280 pounds. It was so great to see all of the ladies eating healthy and cheering each other along. It makes things so much easier to know you're not out there alone.

Weight Loss Is it just me, or does the burn meter overestimate? Jun 19 2008

I also thought it seemed off, but it's resulted in me losing 71 pounds so far, so I'm not going to argue. It told me I would burn 2500 calories a day. I ate approximately 1500 a day, and as long as I stuck to that, I dropped a pound every other day. There have been a few times when I've veered off the track, but as long as I kept the deficit around 1000, I would lose pretty consistently. Now that I've lost this much, I'm finding that I have to cut back the amount of calories I eat to continue losing. The burn meter will go down as you lose weight.

Just a side note...it amazed me that I can eat what I'm eating now (3 full meals and 3 full snacks) and lose weight. It's really made me stop and think about what I was eating before. It's horrible! How much was I eating that I put on that much weight?!?!

How do I update the goal on the calorie goal? I've lost 71 pounds so far, and it's updated the number of calories I burn in a day. However, it hasn't updated the calorie goal that I should shoot for each day. Right now, it has my daily calorie intake goal is 200 more than the estimated amount of calories I will burn. How can I update these things?

Any ideas?

Weight Loss Embarassing moments Jun 12 2008

I've been doing CC for about 5 months, and started out eating salads every day at school. (I teach 6th grade.) I noticed after doing this for about a month that every day during 7th and 8th hour I had this horrible need to pass gas. (I know...kind of gross, huh?) Well, if there's one thing you don't want to do in front of 28 11-year olds, it's let one squeak out. I had to teach most of these classes sitting down because I could not leave my class. After a while I realized it was because I was having too much fiber every day at lunch. After I started to vary my lunch somewhat, the urge seemed to go away.

So, I guess the embarassing moment never really happened...thank God!

I am 37, 5'10'', currently at 211, and shooting for 180. That would put me smaller than I've been in 16 years---after the birth of my first son. Before I had him, I was at 160. Reaching that would be a dream come true. I'm almost afraid to set my goal too low. I don't want to set myself up to fail and then feel bad, even though I've already lost 65 pounds.

Jeans are always a struggle. The fad that brought capris back in style is such a blessing! Try Eddie Bauer. They're expensive, but if you visit the outlet website, you can sometimes get them at a reasonable price--- www.eddiebaueroutlet.com.

you have lost 59 pounds since january?!?!?  that's awesome!! you go girl.  how are you doing it?

also, i'd like to hear more about the burn meter as i'm trying to figure out how to effectively eat and burn at the same time

I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, whole grain breads, and drink a lot of water. No more midnight snacks. I still allow myself a little treat (like half of a york peppermint pattie), but now it's done in moderation. I really watch portions. I still go out to eat. I just eat seafood or chicken and I always make sure I have a big salad. Also, exercise is something I do regularly now. I have 36 pounds to go. Wish me luck!

Hello from another amazon!

I definitely fit in with this group. I'm 5'11'' and right now at 220, down from 276. I, too, am looking forward to having that "1" at the beginning of my weight. I have a large build, so I will probably strive to get down to around 180. If I can manage that, I'll be the same size I was when I got pregnant with my oldest son (he's now 16). Slightly before that I was at 160. I don't think there's any way I can get that little, but who knows?! CC has been so great for me. I'm down 56 pounds in about 18 weeks.

I don't even try to compare to the ladies I work with. Most of them are around 5'6" or 5'7". It's like comparing apples and oranges. We're all working at losing weight and I'm so proud of all of us. We're currently in week 3 of The Biggest Loser at work. Counting all 20 ladies involved, we've lost a combined 134.5 pounds. Isn't that amazing! I only wish they'd started in January. I'd be leaps and bounds ahead!

mmdeam,

I'm down to 235 now as well for a total weight loss of 42 pounds.  I also upped my calories a little to around 1650.  Mine also seems to come off in clumps.  I lost 3 last week and none so far this week.

I guess we're more twinny than we originally thought.  Hahha!

LaughingCatch ya later!

Vestrea--How's it going this week? Last week was a slow week--only one pound. This week has been better--3 pounds. This gives me a total weight loss of 44, down to a weight of 232. I got so excited when I went shopping with my daughter today. When I started on this little endeavor, I was wearing a size 24. Today I tried on a size 18 and it was a perfect fit! My 10-year-old daughter and I did a little dance in the dressing room at our local Target. Someone at church this evening mentioned how good I looked. When people do something like that, it makes me want to just keep on going. I probably should put a sign on my back that asks everyone to say something to me about it. That would be the ultimate motivator!

I went to the doctor the other day. While discussing my PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) she suggested trying to cut some of the extra carbs out of my diet. I hate to change things because it's working so well. I think I might try to just keep it in mind from now on and try to do that whenever the opportunity presents itself (i.e. whole wheat spaghetti instead of regular, strawberries instead of bananas).

How's it going for you this week?

Vestrea--How's it going? Haven't heard from you in a while. Once again I am playing the clump game. What I mean is...I don't change my diet at all, but I go for a week or two with no weight loss and then lose 5 or 6 in one week (i.e. a clump). I guess it's OK. It just makes me uncomfortable when I hit those low points and am tempted to ease up. I have to make myself keep going. I'm up to 53 pounds lost.

Let me know how things are going for you.

I am cold a lot now too, definately will be useful in summer when I used to be SO hot all the time!

I've lost nearly 35 lbs now, just over 1/4 way to my goal weight, so I have a long ways to go and reading about other people's changes that they see along the way is very motivating, so thanks!

mmdeam: Alterations, what a great idea. I have a huge pile of clothes waiting to be sent off to SallyAnn cuz they are too big, some of them I am really sad to see go because I really like them and can't afford to replace them. I never thought to get them altered! Brilliant!

Alterations were the way to go for me. I'm 5'11", so when I find pants that are long enough that I like, I tend to stick with them. Besides, I paid $12 dollars to have three pairs of pants altered. I couldn't buy one new pair for that amount. I called the local dry cleaners and they put me in contact with a lady that did seamstress work. It worked out perfect!

I've posted to this forum before, but I've come up with a few more things, both good and bad.

Good: I can take things to the alterations lady and tell her to take them "in". I kind of feel like the lady in the commercial on TV in which the seamstress is having trouble understanding why she if having them taken "in" instead of "out".

It's nice to pack stuff away for a yard sale because it's too big instead of being too small.

Bad: I am always cold! I'd heard other people from CC talk about this, but with 53 pounds lost, I feel like I'm constantly frozen. I try to see the bright side...like not getting so hot this summer when it's 95 degrees. But right now I'm tired of being cold.

It's becoming winter soon (I live in the southern hemisphere) and I keep feeling cold even though it's only fall weather. Does anyone else feel really cold? I didn't really feel it when I first lost 10 lbs to get to 120, but since dropping to 112 it's been freezing.

OMGosh! Me too! I can't get warm. I'm in the Northern Hemisphere and Winter is s-l-o-w-l-y making an exit. I can't wait for warmer weather. Every time I get in the car I crank the heat up and my son starts taking his shirt off! LOL

Also, I like not seeing that roll that originally "hung out" below my breasts.

My nails are much healthier now that I'm eating better.

Actually, there are too many good things to mention!

Weight Loss Over 100lbs to lose have PCOS Mar 31 2008

I've had issues with PCOS for almost 15 years, only I didn't know what it was then. After my first pregnancy, I gained a TON of weight. After a year of no luck trying for a second pregnancy, I decided to quit trying and to get myself in shape. In three and a half months, I lost 30 pounds and was instantly pregnant. I really wasn't diagnosed until 4 years ago, after my fourth child was born. So keep the faith. It can happen with PCOS.

I also have close to 100 to lose--96 to be exact. (47 down and 49 to go!) Now that I've had my kids, I feel like I can focus more on my weight. And it's fun to see how involved my kids have become. I keep a chalk board in my kitchen that lists the number of pounds lost so far and the number of pounds left to go. My daughter gets such a kick out of helping me change the numbers. I feel like they are supporting me all the way. My husband is too! I'm hoping that losing the amount of weight that I want to lose, the symptoms of my PCOS will diminish. After the birth of my fourth child, I was 10 pounds lighter than when I got pregnant. (Morning sickness! All-day-long sickness! Uugh!) The best thing about it was that my PCOS seemed to have went away. Until I started to put weight back on. When I talked to my OB/GYN about it, he said that often times women focus more on taking care of others and not themselves. I think the difference between me now and me then is that now I realize I have to take care of myself FOR THEM.

Sorry to have gotten so long-winded. I just want every other PCOS-sufferer to know that there is hope. Keep the faith and keep praying!

Mmdeam: I agree with you on the costs of being healthy and I think that the fees related to eating well may be related to the high rate of obesity...it's way easier too to eat pastas everyday than to actually cook healthy fish...

On another note, I don't think that you're being fair about "thin people who have to complain about needing to lose 10 or 15 pounds" as you called them. Maybe you just don't understand that losing weight is not just a question of numbers but also a question of self esteem and for some people that 10-15 lbs is just the same as your 46! On top of that, you don't where these people started, so please don't judge, we're all on the same boat, just on different stops here... I've lost 37 lbs so far and for the last month I've been on the same 2-3 lbs that just won't go away, I'm as (or even more) frustrated as you can be! So close to the goal, but yet... Anyway, congrats on your loss and keep going!

roylucie92--

Please don't take what I said the wrong way. I didn't mean to offend anyone. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

I know of two or three women who are and always have been, like, a size 4. They eat pizza and whatever else they want. Then they complain that they need to lose weight. For me, struggling with my weight for the last 20 years, it's hard to not be frustrated when I hear someone talk like that. I guess I'm just looking forward to the day when I'm in their position.

Congrats on the 37 lost. I know it's hard, but try not to be frustrated.  I once battled against the same 2-3 pounds for several weeks also. I know that sometimes it doesn't make it any easier to hear it, but if you keep at it, those last pounds really will come off. Good Luck!

Okay...my turn...

Why is it that I can go to Aldi's or a similar (cheap) grocery store and buy food that is not good for me at a lower price? BUT! If I want to eat healthy, it costs me two or three times as much at another store? It's not fair. I've finally just decided that I'm going to have to spend more money on things for me to eat. The bonus to that is that on top of spending more money on food, I'm also spending money to have my pants taken in. Oh well...it's cheaper than buying new ones. With four kids in my house, every penny counts. It just doesn't seem fair that it costs more to be healthy.

Next...why is it that thin people have to complain about needing to lose 10 or 15 pounds? I am all for people eating healthy and taking care of themselves, but come on! I've lost 46 so far and am only half way to my goal. I know how hard I'm having to work at it. I would love to only have to lose 10 or 15. It seems like sometimes people don't know how good they have it.

I agree with korali. Any kind of whole wheat crust works. I just use tomato sauce with some garlic added. ( I love garlic!) I top mine with onions and mushrooms. That's almost no calories. I use either 2% or fat free shredded cheese and it's really pretty good for you. I would stay away from any meat toppings. They tend to be loaded with fat/calories. As long as you watch you portions and don't eat a whole bunch, pizza can be that thing you treat yourself with. Enjoy!

Vestrea--How's it going? Any change from the last time we 'talked'?

Hello mmdeam!

Down to 238.  It's going so sloowwwwlllyyyyyyy!  I wish I had more patience!

How about you!!!

Well, I haven't checked this post for awhile, so I'm hoping that you're still there. I am down to 235, with a total loss of 41. It feels great! My weight seems to come off in clumps. I lost 4 pounds last week, which is too much for just one week. This week, I've lost 1 pound, so I guess it's evening out.

Don't lose hope! Usually, those people that lose the weight slowly are the ones that keep it off. How many calories are you taking in on a normal day? After I raised mine to 1500-1600, it took about a week to start seeing results. After that, the weight loss was pretty steady. I would've never thought that I needed to eat more to lose weight! This has completely changed the way I think of "dieting". Maybe if your calorie intake is too low, your body could just be maintaining and/or going into starvation mode. Let me know if this is the case. You may just need to add a little to your diet.

Keep in touch and let me know how things are going!

Believe it or not, I have the best luck at Chinese buffet restaurants. I always eat a salad first, even though it usually isn't very big. Then, I stay away from anything fried. I usually look for something like crab meat and/or shrimp in a light sauce. Most of the time, it's just cooked in a little butter. As long as you can control your portions, it's not too bad.
