| Weight Loss | Low fat or low carb? | Apr 10 2008 21:39 (UTC) |

i was doing calorie counting for 3 months and i did not lose a lb. i kept it under 1500 calories a day and worked out 5 days a week and nothing. as soon as i went on south beach diet ( not atkins) i lost 8 lbs. and it was not water weight. it was fat. south beach is better than atkins. i has healthy proteins and "good carbs". white processed food, especially low-fat, is terrible for you. my body is extra sensitive to preservatives in food and just by putting ie: low fat yogurt or low fat snackwells etc into my mouth, i get sick. they replace that fat with something and that something is processed and chemical and bad for you. the reason people are so fat today and not back 50 years ago is because not only do we have convience food on every corner in america (mcdonalds convience stores etc) but we also live a very sedentary life. there is less manual labor being done by american workers and more sit down jobs where all a person does for 8-10 hours a day is sit in front of a computer and snack. also people have much more disposable income than they did 50 years ago. okay i know that went on and on. sorry. but i can't stand all these shows on tv and in the newspaper that speculate about why america is so fat. it's obvious i think. |

lucy i agree with you. she probably was fishing for a compliment. there a lot of girls out there who need to be reassured that they are hot. it's shallow i agree but if she was fishing for compliments then she probably feels badly about herself. unfortunately looks don't guarantee happiness or self esteem. i've known many people who would not traditionally be thought of as attractive but their inner beauty shines through. like someone with an enigmatic smile that is contagious. |

okay here's my question then, why do people take pilates and yoga to help build strength and muscle if only free weights will do? would i be wasting my time going to pilates and yoga class? and why do so many celebrities endorse or are fanatics about either of these? i wonder how they stay in shape seeing as their bodies are their livelihood and seem to always look so perfect if they are doing yoga and pilates and starving themselves of course? |

| thanks for all the replies. i will definately check out those websites mentioned. but do i started out with lower weights? i've tried like 12 lb dumbells and 15 lb's too and by the time i hit 10 reps i feel like i cannot lift anymore. i must mention that i spent 3 months in the hospital in bed after a couple of surgeries and no food except through a tube in my arm so my muscles completely atrophied (s) and so i am working my way back up to the same strength i had before i was sick. plus too i am on steroids for my crohn's disease so i gained a ton of weight in like 5 months. so i am battling both lack of muscle and tiredness from the prednisone as well as a 30 lb weight gain. i guess thats what happens when you can eat even a drop of food for months. lol | |||

| i have tried the atkins diet before with little success. the carbs were too low and my cravings were uncontrollable. i hope sbd will be the answer. i am a 28 year old female i weigh 160 and i am 5'6 i want to be 135ish. i am hoping i can stick with it. i workout as much as i can usually 5 days a week 1 hour of cardio and a couple of days with free weights. i so want to lose this weight and fit back into all my clothes. i have gained 30lbs in six months due to an extended illness let made me unable to eat except from a tube in my arm. when i could eat again i ballooned up really fast. i figure if i can gain it that fast i can lose it that fast too. hopefully!!! wish me luck. i sure can use it :) | |||

| thanks for the encouragment and the input. its hard for me to eat more than 1100 calories a day but i'm going to try to. my appetite isn't 100% back since my surgeries over the summer. i think starving for so long made me gain weight like crazy when i was able to eat again. that must be it because i've gained in places i never gained before like my legs and behind. i'll keep at it. just posting and reading positive replies helps alot. thanks again:) | |||

| Foods | IBS and GERD - Stuck In A Rut | Feb 13 2008 01:50 (UTC) |

| I don't have IBS. I have crohn's disease which has similar symptons but is actually an auto immune disease that cannot, as yet, be cured. Spicy foods do me in too. As well as most raw veggies and fried food and whatever my body decides it can't handle on any particular day. You might try smoothies (organic) as that is easy to digest, but not to acidic of fruit. Also you might try egg whites or the while egg yolk and all. boiled or scrambled. That is if you aren't vegan. My doctor told me that eggs are probably the most perfect food for people with stomach problems. They are packed with protein and usually go down and stay down. Also, different types of yogurt. I happen to love plain yogurt with fresh fruit. Berrys are also very good for you but with acid reflux anything acidic is going to get to you. Preservatives play a big part in stomach problems. One diet I might suggest is "The Makers Diet" by Jordan Rubin. I have alot of friends that follow his 40 day plan and feel like a different person afterwards. It can be a very difficult diet to follow. It is essentially a kosher diet based on the bible but that isn't what drew me to it. It was the fact that the author has Crohn's and was near death and rather than be medicated to death tried a diet based on what a typical kosher diet entails and he became like a new person. No medication. Just a strict diet. It is strictly organic though. So it can be pricey. Best of luck. | |||

| this comment is for the woman who said her husband is having vomit attacks for the past year. tell him to get checked for crohn's disease. that's how it started for me and not one doctor knew what was wrong with me. within a year i was 97lbs and i'm 5'6, i was in intense pain all the time and could no longer eat. i went to every er in northeast ohio and i was told i had everything from acid reflux to pelvic inflamatory disease (by the way that's an std and the problem was my stomach). then i was told to see a psychiatrist. finally i found a doctor who listened to me and actually believed me even though i didn't have insurance and told me i had crohn's disease. i almost died before i was diagnosed correctly. he could have crohn's or even something as simple as ibs. | |||

| thanks for the input. and thanks for the thread. you're probably right about the diet pills. this hospital stay was pretty long. it was a bad flare and i actually had a perforated bowel so that's why i was in there so long. plus i had two surgeries within a month. i think i'm gonna try vitamin shots and talk to my doc about some safe diet plans. | |||
| Health & Support | Can you lose weight with Crohn's Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome?? | Jan 28 2008 03:33 (UTC) |

| I so understand exactly what you're goin through. you could be telling my story. after my bowel resection it took time to be able to eat again and when I was able I ate so much because I was so starved plus I was drinking ensure, recommended by my doctor. Then I went on prednisone and ballooned up to 160lb's from 110lb's. I feel so depressed about it. I too have multiple sizes in my closet because I yoyo in weight so much. I've started working out again since I've recovered. (I had my surgeries over this past summer) Exercise seems to help. But the food is my issue. I have uncontrollable cravings ever since this last flare and I don't know why. I just can't seem to help myself. I just wanna eat all the time. I'm always hungry. It's just crazy because just this past summer food was repugnant to me. Even the sight of food made me wanna vomit. I think that this disease is different for everybody. I know that some people can eat veggies and other can't some can eat fried food and some can't etc. Also I think weight training helps if you've had any extended period of time bedridden from a flare. Your muscles start to atrophy within and couple of weeks when you can't be active so when you do get outta bed and start feeling better it's good to start with some light freeweights. It really helped me get my strength back. Anyway, I'd like to add you to my friends list. I think a lot of people don't understand how much this disease affects you and how difficult it can be to live with. Best of luck to you. | |||

| I do exactly the same thing and its because i don't eat often enough during the day. Also if you're anything like me you crave sweets all the time. I'm on a semi low carb diet. (no white food) I think thats why I crave sugar. Try to resist the urge and make certain you are eating often enough during the day. Another tip is to get on a regular schedule like going to bed at the same time every night. Maybe try doing situps in the evening or light exercise. But not too late because then you'll be too amped to go to sleep. Make certain you're not eating within at least 2 hours before bedtime. | |||

| I think I'll use that too. I always have an excuse. I'm a single Mom and theres a lot that I have to do everyday so I feel like the gym is just another thing i have to do. I should stop thinking that way and put a positive spin on it. Besides, just about the only time I'm doing something for myself is when I'm working out. Maybe you should think about getting a friend to work out with you. You'll end up motivating eachother. When she doesn't want to go you can encourage her and vice versa. | |||
