Fitness Trying to tone upper body using free weights - Advice please. Mar 07 2008

Toning is really a euphamism for fat loss and muscle gain.

Body weight exercises are great for accomplishing what you want. Chin ups, push ups, dips.

Foods Protein Bars? Mar 07 2008

I really like Zone Perfect bars. I know they are relatively high in sugar but they are also high in deliciousness.   The Chocolate Coconut Crunch is particularly amazing.  I eat one every night before I go to sleep. It keeps me from waking up at 3AM ravenous.

By writing the above, I am in no way advocating the Zone diet, or the ingestion of anything 'artificial'.

I'm not sure, but I saw a documentary about swimming the English Channel. The guy that did it, took 12 hours and lost 14 lbs of body fat in that time. Sick.

Its easy to grind in a cheapo coffee grinder---cheaper to buy bulk as well. In San Diego, we have Henry's Markets that sell bulk flax for 69 cents a pound.

The Lounge Tipping at restaurants...... Feb 06 2008

For the record: I have never had service lousy enough to consider not leaving a tip. It is highly offensive to me that anyone would consider not tipping at a restaurant. It's not as if you will get better service next time, because you left no tip this time. I promise.

I consistently tip 30% because the job sucks, there are no benefits, the servers don't make minimum wage and they are federally taxed as if they make 15% in tips.

It has happened to me a couple times(service so bad I didn't leave a tip), and I have never gone back to those restaurants. I consider the tip to be payment for good service, and I tip well when the service is good--heck I tip the standard %15 in spite of less than stellar service when the server can manage to get all the orders right.  But when the server is rude, slow, forgetful, patronizing, and missing in action for the majority of my time in their place, I reward them accordingly. I loathe incompetence.  It is offensive to me that a server would EXPECT a tip even though they are a terrible server and sad to me that a person would tip when given terrible service.

Oh, and I always let them know where they stand so they are not surprised. Most of the time they just get P.O.'d.

I have an Octoane Fitness Q35. It has a relatively small footprint and has several preprogrammed modes. It was a bit more than $500 though.

Well she said she doesn't need to lose weight or fat, just to tone up, so saying that she should lose belly fat isnt helpful.

And I 100% agree with the fact that you need to change/improve eating habits to get/maintain abs.  Some important things to remember are to lower the refined carbs, candy sugar bread pasta, you get the picture.

These days they make great whole wheat pastas and such, as well as fantastic wraps called "Flat Outs" that are delicious and soft but full of fiber and low in carbs. It would be helpful for you to increase your veggies and lean proteins while trying to gain that muscle.

I don't know how easily you gain muscle but some people find that they need to cut out high sugar fruits and veggies like corn, oranges, bananas, apples, carrotts, and stick to lower carb veg and fruits like any ind of berry, broccoli, spinnach, etc.

If you are trying to rebuild your abs for a certain event (this is a crazy thing bodybuilders do, so don't go nuts with it) don't drink anything but water, and only when you are thirsty enough to quench your thirst. Some of us (rightfully) get used to sucking down water while trying to lose weight, but for ab muscles (and any muscle really) to LOOK as pronounced as possible, having less water "bloat" is helpful.

Hope any of that helped!!

The truth is less helpful than telling her to dehydrate herself? In order to have your abs show, you need to reduce body fat.

Try a couple weeks of interval training.  I use an elliptical machine:  warm up at a slow, steady pace on a low level for 3-5 minutes. Up the level and pace for 30-45 seconds and then down the level and slow down for 60 seconds.  Repeat for 15-20 minutes followed by a 3-5 minute cool down.

2 tablespoons of regular JIF is 190, not 90, bringing your sandwich total to 340 vice 240.   Eat a PB&J--use sugar free blackberry or raspberry preserves instead of regular grape jelly and some kind of whole grain bread instead of plain white.

Always order sauces/dressings on the side so you can control the amount. Opt for vegetable side dishes instead of fries, baked potato instead of mashed (they add lots of butter).  Skinless grilled chicken or fish are good.
