| The Lounge | What sex would you like to come back as? | May 08 2009 19:17 (UTC) |

Great question! Oh, how I would love to come back as a man. I've wanted to be male since I was a little girl. My brother ruined my birthday when I turned 8 by telling me that I could never be a professional football player because I was a girl. I was devastated when my parents confirmed this. To think that the Washington Redskins would turn me down because I was a girl made me so mad! When I was a child, I spent my days with the neighborhood boys playing football, baseball, climbing trees, racing bikes and spitting. As a teen and a young adult, I had a terrible time trying to understand the social aspects of being female. It didn't come natural to me. Things were different in the 60's and 70's for girls in my hometown. There was a template that women were expected to fit into and if you didn't, you were ostracized by others. The only thing I've enjoyed about being female is giving birth to my daughter. She has made being a mom the best part of my life. |

My parents taught me to work hard at every job or chore that needed to be done. To finish it, no matter what. I often hear people say, "That's not in my job description." To me...that attitude shows the person to be lazy and shallow. If something needs to be done, you stay and get it done. It doesn't matter if you make $2.00 an hour or if you own the company. I'm grateful to my parents for teaching me that. |

Congratulations Tess on your decision to become a healthier person. Changing your lifestyle will be easier if you take it one day at a time. Don't try to change everything all at once. Making little changes here and there will add up to make a big difference later on. Friends and family will offer all kinds of "diet" advice, some of it not so good for your body. It can be hard to determine which advice is the right way to go. Use the Internet as a tool to learn all that you can about nutrition and exercise. Go to the library and pick up some books on the same subjects. When I started (I was 48 years old too) I didn't know all that much about what to eat that would be good for me. I was surprised to learn that fats were healthy for me and that carbohydrates are what fuels my body. I stopped listening to the ads on TV and in the magazines that show drastic weight losses in 3 days. I'm an individual and so are you. Take it slow, commit to your new healthy lifestyle and you will become the person you want to be. Don't beat yourself up when you make a mistake. Just start all over again. I don't want to sound as if changing your life is a walk in the park, but you can do it Tess. Try your best to be consistent. Calorie Count is a great place to ask for advice, learn new recipes, or find a shoulder to cry on if you need it. I wish you the very best and if I can help in any way, give out a hollar! |

| Fitness | Bummed about my HIIT session | Mar 26 2009 19:11 (UTC) |

I just started HIIT last week using my recumbent cycle. It isn't as intense as those of you who are running, I'm sure. I warm up for 5 minutes at 13 mph on level 3, then every 3 minutes, I cycle at 18.5 mph for 60 seconds on level 5, then dropping back to my starting speed. I do this for a total work out time of 30 minutes. During the 60 seconds interval it's all I can do to make it to 1 minute. It feels like my thighs are going to shut down. They're on fire! Am I doing this correctly? Is it ok to do this more than once a week? I'm 49 years old and I've only been exercising for about a year. Any advice on this would be appreciated. |

| Weight Loss | How many grams of fat? | Mar 26 2009 12:04 (UTC) |
|
By the end of the day I usually take in between 50 - 60 grams of fat. Sometimes, it's more than that. However, I just try to eat good fats that are found in olive oil, nuts, things like that. And if the rogue piece of cake/pie jumps out in front of me? So be it! Have a good one! |

| Foods | what are your worst binge stories? | Mar 06 2009 20:53 (UTC) |
54 |
A meatloaf, the serving bowl of potatoes, and a pan of cornbread. 36 Ferrero Rocher candies and 4 slices of Meatlover's Pizza. A whole roasted chicken and a Chocolate Pie. 5 sausage/egg/cheese biscuits from McDonald's followed by a 1 lb. bag of M&M peanuts. On several occasions I have hit McDonald's, Chik-fil-a, Wendy's and the donut shop, then took it all home to chow down on. Just a few binge trips. During each binge episode, I ate as if I was in a "trance". Just mindless eating and it felt as if I was "high". Completely out of control. It was like I wasn't even there, if that makes any sense.

| The Lounge | Moving out? | Feb 25 2009 19:02 (UTC) |

Please think this through before making a big commitment like moving out. It sounds as if you may not be completely sure about your budget. Take some time to write down everything you spend money on, not just monthly but also yearly. Figure out what you spend on car insurance, car maintenance, hair salon, clothes, gifts etc. then divide that amount by 12, ADD it to your MONTHLY budget. That way, you can avoid any surprises. Just like the others have said, your ability to handle your finances by saving and paying off your debt while living with your parents, shows tremendous independence and responsibility. Staying put for a while is a golden opportunity for you. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
