Weight Loss What's your weight loss success story to date? May 14 2008

CONGRATS EVERYONE!!!

Highest Weight: 308 lbs

Start date: January 7, 2008

Start weight: 260 lbs

Current weight: 217 lbs

# of weeks of healthy lifestyle: 18.5 weeks

# of lbs lost since start: 43 lbs

Goal weight:150 lbs for starters and will go from there depending on how I look/feel

TIP:  WRITE IT DOWN, BE ACCOUNTABLE...I started out writing every single food/calorie down for about 3 months & logged it on CC too once I found the website (1 week in) I still log everything on CC, and log my weight on my pad right where EVERYONE can see it!  Do you think I want to write a higher # on there?? NOPE.  I have a magnetic pad on my frig. and I wrote everything down!  Having to write it down kept me from eating something I didn't need/want.  ** Make sure to work your fav. foods in to your lifestyle change in MODERATION...for me it's Pizza I LOVE Pizza and refused to live without it...it helps to know, as long as I work it in, I can still have my very favorite food pretty much anytime I want!!  To me deprivation of your favorite things is setting yourself up for failure in the LONG run, after all this is a LIFE CHANGE, not a DIET!!

* Walking in to a crowded, public event and a friend of mine (God bless her I know she loves me) says "Well, HEY SKINNY" at the top of her lungs while all eyes are on my and thinking the same thing I am thinking...Ummm yeah at 220 lbs. I am by no means anywhere near SKINNY...yes I have lost almost 40 lbs., but not skinny...

* SIL being on what she thinks is a "weight loss clinic approved* crash diet and proclaiming that she will lose 40 lbs. in one month and trying to convince me it is healthy...whatever!!!

* Having to buy new clothes, while I LOVE that I am a smaller size, I plan on being a lot smaller (70 lbs. to go) so I am seeing that I will be spending a lot of money in the next few months.  While I am not "rich" by any means, I just can't justify wearing clothes that are 2 and 3 sizes too big...it totally makes me look frumpy and I can't stand that!!

Weight Loss How do you celebrate? Apr 11 2008

For me I chose to eat whatever I really want for celebratory reasons...however, with that being said I am very strict on myself the rest of the time and when I do eat out for a special ocasion I eat in moderation.  Now that I have been trying to lose weight and been so strict about my eating lifestyle my stomach has gotten smaller and I very, very rarely even finish a full restaurant meal.  I will order whatever entree with a salad and veggies as a side dish, most of the time I will take 1/2 of the entree home and DH or the kids will have it the next day.  I have thus far lost almost 40 lbs. since January so obviously this isn't hindering my weight loss.  I would say special ocasion eating out happens at least twice a month for me.

Again, the rest of the time I am very STRICT as in I NEVER go over my calories, work out etc. I think being able to eat a "normal" meal of what you really want actually helps you in the long run.  Even if you are trying to lose a lot of weight (my goal to lose is 110+ lbs) you aren't going to want to sit at a table munching on carrot sticks while everyone else has pizza or wings for the rest of your life, or at least I know I don't want to.  If I thought I could never have a meal out with friends/family and eat what I wanted to (in moderation) it would make me depressed and hurt me in the long run!  Not to mention having a meal over your calories every now and then will HELP boost your metabolism and trick your body up a bit!!

I say, enjoy a dinner of what you really want in moderation and don't worry about it

Tomorrow night is my sister's bachelorette party, we are going out to my favorite place (her's too) to eat and I already know what I want hee..hee.. my big thing now is to decide if I will have a drink or not, I haven't had alcohol period since January, but not being a big drinker it hasn't really bothered me.  I am pretty sure after the week I have had (Husband sick, baby teething, older kids driving me INSANE) I will WANT a drink tomorrow night LOL!

It could be the B vitamins, I had a reaction of BAD headaches when I was taking extra B vitamins.  Too much Iron also tends to give me headaches...

Weight Loss TOTM and plateau Mar 27 2008

Vent away girl, becaus I OH SO feel your pain!!  I have lost 35 lbs. and am so proud of myself, BUT every month when my "Not so welcome visitor" shows up I get sooooo out of sorts.  I feel like I haven't lost a pound!!  Me, I'm one of thoes that HAS to step on the scale EVERY day!  It's my routine, first thing in the morning, get up, pee, strip, step on the scale and for 3 months now I have a mini party in the bathroom bec. the scale has continuely gone DOWN!  Except for TTOTM!  For an entire 7-9 days I have to steer clear of the scale and it just KILLS me!  However, I learned the hard way that my weight goes up anywhere between 3-7 lbs. for a week and there is NO use in getting depressed every morning.

At least there is a break in the clouds, because as soon as the days are gone so is the weight & once again there is a loss and my weight continues going down.  It is such a TOUGH week though and really works against my good feelings!  TTOTM SUX BIG TIME!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Weight Loss Plateu or TTOTM??? Mar 26 2008

Same thing happens to me, I go about an entire week with no loss or what looks like gain (water weight) then once TTOTM is over it takes about 2 days for the scale to go back down and the weight loss shows for the week.  Don't be discouraged and stay away from the scale for at least a week!!!

Weight Loss What should I have for dinner...family not supportive! Mar 20 2008
16:36 (UTC)

Use Ground Turkey Breast or Ground Chicken Breast instead of Hamburger for the Sloppy Joes...whole wheat bun & slice up some Sweet Potatoes in fry sized slices/thickness spray on some pam and bake in the oven. YUM!!!  My family LOVES Sloppy Joes (especially my 4.5 year old) and they don't even notice the difference when I substitute the meat!!  If you can't sub for the whole family...make your own meat and ask Mom, Dad, whoever to save you a tad of sauce for it!

Justin,

Put those Doritos DOWN dude!!  Hee...hee...is it a nice day where you live?  Can you go outside and have some sunshine & fresh air??  Get out of the house, even if it is a nasty day and go for a short drive, down a back road (as to not pass any Fast Food joints).  If all this can't work...go ahead and put all the lovely snacks your wife has hidden and put them in a garbage bag and lock them in a room...out of sight out of mind!

You can do it, you can control yourself, you have the will power in your...not reach down...grab it and let go of the junk!  I have faith!!!

Weight Loss fustration with the "fat free" generation Mar 20 2008

I have a friend whose MIL is a PRIME example of this "Fat Free" means "Free Food" mentality.  She will no exaggeration eat an ENTIRE BAG of Tootsie Rolls, Pretzles, Licorice, Circus Peanuts, Jelly Beans etc. and Claim "What they are FAT FREE" she is VERY over weight and not healthy at all.  She will also eat a HUGE jar (Think Sams, Costco,BJ's size) of Almonds while saying "What?  They have GOOD FAT" OMG, yest Almonds have GOOD fat, but geez everything in moderation!!!  It is crazy to watch this woman consume her "healthy" foods and wonder why the heck her "diets" NEVER work!!
Weight Loss My scale is dead. What type and brand do you prefer? Mar 20 2008

I have the weight watchers Brand Digital Scale...it is accurate (matched with Dr's office), has the ounces & has a 2 user save setting.  In other words you can save your last weight and someone else can do the same.  It is reliable, but doesn't have tons of bells and whistles you CAN get for a lot more $.  I do tend to take really good care of it...I put it up on a shelf every morning after I use it LOL the last digi scales I purchased my kids got wet during bath "Let's see how much water we can get OUT of the tub" time.  The WW scale I now own cost about $25.00...the original one cost $19.99 at Walmart, it was comparable, but was totally fried after it got wet the one time.
Weight Loss as if PMS wouldn't make me cranky on its own....... Mar 20 2008
13:25 (UTC)

First off BIG (((HUGS))) Girl, PMS SUX and you just mentioned walking with your son in a front carrier, so he must be pretty small MEANING you just had a baby!!!  Don't beat yourself up so much THIS TOO SHALL PASS!!!  Trust me, I have only been doing CC since Jan 14 and TTOM is DEPRESSING if you go anywhere NEAR a scale for an entire WEEK!!  I learned this the first month, when my scale went up more than 4 lbs...I kept on my program and sure enough within a few days after TTOM was gone...wala the scale went back to normal - the loss of the week!!  It's just a fact of life us gals have to go through.  Compound that with the hormones, emotions etc. of recently having a baby and No wonder you are feeling so down!!

I think you need a nice, relaxing soak in the tub & a nice cup of hot teat to relax with.  Just hang in there, this week will be over soon and you will be FINE and the scale will go DOWN I PROMISE!!!  Keep up the good work you are doing an amazing job!!

Weight Loss Are we obsessing? Mar 20 2008
13:12 (UTC)
11

I think the first month I would have probably been considered obsessed, BUT for me, at 260 lbs. that isn't really a bad thing.  I needed to really kick myself in to gear and the tools here, counting etc. was exactly what I needed.  There for a bit I probably started to annoy friends/family with it, but it has tapered off  a lot.  I am still seriously fanatical about counting, logging etc., but now I keep it more to myself vs. sharing it with anyone that stands still for 2 seconds.  Also, I think the beginning I seemed obsessed because I was really learning soooo much, and I am all about learning new things and sharing what I have learned with others.  I know there are some here who have had problems "breaking" free of the counting and have had to taper off the site or drop out completely, but to me that is probably just part of an "addictive" personality & most of us here with HUGE amounts to lose obviousley have that addictive thing going on with food.  I think you will find after a week or two and actually getting in to the groove the obsession feeling will taper off a lot it will just become normal "habit".

Weight Loss Too much H2O? Mar 19 2008
13:47 (UTC)

I aim for a gallon a day, most days I succed...I go by the 1/2 oz per pound of body weight or the 1/2 your body weight in ounces "rule".  I find that I get less bloated and have very little water "retention" since drinking the 1 gallon a day.  I was really AWFUL at drinking water (Confessed Diet Pepsi JUNKIE) I have now cut my Diet Pepsi back to 1-2 servings a day and an ocasional Tea (usualy when I am out to eat I don't like "city" water haha yes, I am a country girl on well water).  I try to finish my water by 7:00 pm (normally I finish the 1st 1/2 gallon by noon and then sip the 2nd 1/2 gallon througout the day) as to keep myself from having to get up all night to pee haha!  I don't know what the "right" amount is, but I know what I am doing is working so I will keep it up.

Sarah, You are not alone in your PRAISE for CC...CC has been such a BLESSING to me and it has helped me so much in a total change of lifestyle eating/excercise etc.  I have found the tools here invaluable!  I joined CC on 1/14/08 and since then have had a steady 1.5-2.5lb (more often the 2.5) loss since.  I actually feel pride when I log my food intake and get my score (Very rarely below a B-) for the week/month etc.  I find it beyond helpful that everything is right there in print for me!  Of course watching the scale go down, down, down almost on a daily basis does a lot for me too HAHA!!  I started here at 251 on 1/14 and I am currently 226.6!! My goal is to lose 100 lbs. (putting me at 150) in 1 year!  With CC's help I am WELL on my way and meeting my "mini goals" on time!!

I lost 50+ lbs. 2 years ago before becoming pregant with my 3rd baby and even though I lost the weight and basicaly maintained (only kept on about 10 lbs over pre baby weight) I lost it in a very unhealthy way.  Basicaly I starved myself and my hair was falling out etc.  Of course being 300 lbs. when I started no one really realized (including myself) what I was doing to myself.  Now that I look back on it becoming pregnant (TOTAL SURPISE) probably saved me from getting ill and maybe even getting an eating disorder (Funny to say that considering how over weight I still was).  Anyway, not to hijack your post, but I FEEL YOU GIRL!!!  CC is amazing and I plan on being a member here for a very long time.  Feel free to add me as friend!

I used Slimfast religiously when I lost 50+ pounds before becoming pregnant with my 3rd baby.  I found it to work, but as I have learned more about calorie counting, eating healthy etc. I have found I can actually eat something more filling with as many or less calories and that is more appealing to me.  With that being said I always keep a few cans around for those morning when breakfast is impossible (due to rushing around to get to work etc.) because breakfast is probably the hardest meal I have found to have time for and the most important to actually have ;)  I think Slimfast is a good way to help you out, but I bet as you learn more you will find as I did that actually eating something healthy that you enjoy will satisfy you more!
Weight Loss VitaminWater=evil or good? Mar 19 2008

iheartjesus2727  You are MUCH better off to add Crystal Light (or something comparable) to your water.  If you drink too many Vitamin Waters the calories & Sugar are going to add up FAST.  While they might be "good" for you because of the vitamins the calories and sugar will go against you too.  So, if you are having a hard time drinking plain water, try adding crystal light (store brands are just as good and cheaper too).  I think the Vitamin Waters (ones I have checked) have 50-100 calories in them...you would be better having calorie free additive (Crystal Light) and eating a piece of fruit for the same or less calories & taking a multi vitamin for the vitamin part!

I am pretty sure that 1,500 is the bare minimum a man is supposed to eat just to maintain healthy bodily functions (heart, brain, etc.) so I am sure you need to up your calories.  There are MANY different opinions as to the accuracy of the meters here, but I have found them pretty accurate as have a lot of other people.  I can't imagine that 1,500 is anywhere near enough for you, but that's just my $.02  There are exact calculations for figuring out your calories, and people here that know them.  Hopefully one of the will post the actual equation for you so you can recalculate.  Good Luck

I started counting 1/7 and lost 9 lbs the first week, however since then I have leveled off to a steady 1.5-2.5 lb. per week loss.  My starting weight was 260 and my current weight is 227.8.

I agree with pp that you are probably eating too few calories, I was allotted 1550 calories 5'6" 251 lbs, wanting to lose 100 1bs in 1 year.  My activity was set at "Light", but I have since lowered it to "Sedentary" as I have a desk job.  You may need to up those calories (by a lot actually) maybe check your STATS/Calculations again!!

Weight Loss Looking for my CC twin! Mar 17 2008
00:45 (UTC)

Hi, welcome to CC you will find this site to be an AMAZING tool, I am sure!

I am Heather 5'6" currently 228, my inital goal weight is 150, but I intend to get a little lower than that as 150 is near the top of the healthy BMI.  Anyway, my highest weight has been 300 lbs. (you can read my profile for more info).  I am a 30 year old mother to 3 kids and an AMAZING, SUPPORTIVE husband who has loved me through THICK (literally) and thin!!  I joined CC January 14, but started "counting on my own" January 7.  I have lost 32 lbs. so far, I am FANATICAL about counting and really take this life style change seriously.  So far I haven't had any real obstacles, my will power is surprisingly, SHOCKINGLY VERY GOOD!!

You can do it!!  I will add you as a friend, feel free to do the same!

Weight Loss 35, 5'5 and 70lbs to lose. Looking for someone to say on track with (closed to new members) Feb 26 2008
14:28 (UTC)
34

I'm all for the motivation!  I'm 31 (almost 32) 5'6" with 85 pounds to go until my goal weight (150)!  I am currently 234.8...I started January 7 at 260 pounds, started CC January 14 at 251 (big loss first week, due to water weight etc.) I have had a pretty stead 2-2.5 lbs loss a week & followed my plan religiously!  My hope is to have lost or very close to lost 110 pounds by January next year.  In the past I have been as high as 300 pounds, counted calories (on my own, didn't know about CC) and lost about 60.  Then I got pregnant (I have 3 kids) SURPRISE and quit counting during pregnancy and for the next year.  I did pretty good and only started out about 15ish pounds heavier than when I quit counting (and eating crap LOL).  So, I am back at this and I am LOVING this site! Feel free to add me to your friends list(s)!

We can sooooo do this!!!

Foods What about Lay's Light or Pringle Light????? Feb 17 2008

I eat the Pringles Fat Free/Light Sour Cream and Onion chips (14 crisps = 70 calories) at least 2X a week either with a sandwich at lunch or as a salty snack.  I LOVE PRINGLES and am sooo happy that they have attempted a more healthy option.  It probably saves me from wanting the regulars.  As with all "light/fat free" foods there is a slight taste difference, but in my opinion they are still yummy!  I have NEVER had any side effects from eating them..I am happy to have my "tastes like I'm being bad" chip to fall back on!
