I would suggest getting a heart monitor that counts your calories and stores the information about your workouts.  I looove my Polar heart rate monitor.  I use the elliptical also and my calories actually burned are always different from what the machine tells me.  I usually burn MORE calories according to my heart monitor.  I don't trust the accuracy of the machines.

And hopefully we are all experiencing the mental health benefits of exercise.  When I come home after a run or a good workout, my mood is lifted, I am excited to cook dinner and hang out with my husband, I am chatty and full of energy.  I also sleep so much better when I am working out regularly.  It helps to alleviate the day to day stress of life!

Fitness Thinking about getting a personal trainer....any advice? Jan 23 2009

I have been working with a trainer at a small gym that is strictly for the trainers and their clients.  I am not sure how the pay is structured, but I feel that because the focus is on personal training, the trainers have a lot of experience, and personal training is their only job function, that I am getting the most for my money.  I can also use the gym when I am not with my trainer, it is never as crowded as the "big" gyms, and the staff really takes pride in the facilities and everything is always clean.  I have seen great results and am always challenged.  Do it!!

A suggestion for running...I was not a runner until about 6 months ago.  I hated it and always got the side cramp or was gasping for air.  I did this program called "Couch to 5K" and now I can run 5K with no problems.  Just google "Couch to 5K".  It gives you week by week workouts.  I had to repeat a few weeks, so don't get discouraged if you can't move to the next week when you are supposed to.  It sounds like you are really into goal setting - and this plan helps you set goals.  Good luck!
