Fitness Lower than normal heart rate when exercising.... Apr 07 2009
00:05 (UTC)

Thanks! I never would have figured that at all. I thought they either worked or didn't work with no grey area. I am going to check that and get back to work! I must say, I was very nervous that something was wrong with me and I was never going to burn major calories again! And that is depressing!

Weight Loss Day 6 of ongoing binge-HELP!! Feb 14 2009
00:37 (UTC)

That's exactly it! The carbs have totally taken hold of me! I usually keep it pretty low. Last week was my birthday and I over-dosed on cake...I'm pretty sure that's where it all began. It's hard to keep them as low as I like because I eat a ton of vegetables but I will try it out. Don't know if I could handle the tuna thing though...Thanks for responding.

Weight Loss Early 30's - Mom, wife looking for support to stay on track to lose 20 lbs! Feb 09 2009

Hey there! Welcome. I am just like you. I am 32yrs old, a single mom. I work full time and am trying to lose that brutal last 15 lbs. I recently started falling off the wagon but am still exercising. I am 5'4" and now at 137 (although I just got a new scale so who knows if that's accurate. I think the key is (and I learned this when I started here) you will be much more capable of handling all of the stresses of taking care of everyone else when you are healthy and happy. Losing weight, eating right, and exercising not only makes you look better but you begin to feel amazing! You have a lot more energy and your family will thank you for it. Of course, you have to do the work but it is worth it! I am here if you need support-god knows I always am looking for someone to reach out to when I start to fail (sort of like the last few days). Good luck!

Weight Loss Happy Birthday and thank you for the new scale!!!!!!! Feb 06 2009

I really am going to take all of that advice and not listen to my scale too seriously. I think I might go back to my old scale that said I was lighter! We were just becoming friends. Thanks everyone!!

I started this site about a year ago. I am faithful to logging everything in, I am faithful to my exercise. I never really hit my goal but became happy where I was at. Maybe my goal was a little out of reach for my body. Anyway, because of the exercise (I like weight lifting), I fell about 10 lbs short of my goal. I could lose about 5 lbs which I work hard at most of the time but because of the noticeable gain in muscle over time, I don't think my original goal makes much sense. All that being said, this site is what got me to where I am. I consider myself a success. Every aspect of my life has improved because of the changes I have made. I know that you can find the support you need here. Weight loss doesn't happen overnight, so if you can stick to what you are doing you will get there!

Fitness I need running shoe help! Jan 21 2009

Here is my advice (although I am by no strectch an expert). If you go to a sport-specific store they can measure your foot correctly, they will have you walk around to check your gait. Everyone walks differently so everyone's shoe needs are different. They will recommend the proper shoe for you. I started running last year and had ridiculous shin splints. After going to one of these stores and getting the right shoe, the problem eased. It can make an entire world of difference! Word of caution: the shoes at these stores can be pricey. See what they recommend and try to find it somewhere else for less money, if possible. Hope that helps!

First of all, congratulations on your decision to become more fit! I think your calculation sounds pretty good. What's important is your heart rate, that's what kills calories. If you are normally inactive, that amount of activity was probably a pretty good workout. I usually underestimate my activity if I am unsure. I think you are right on the money. Each time you get your exercise- try to improve in some way...(more  strenuous, increase time, etc). Maybe next time you could clean the house for 3 hours and then everyone could have dinner on your floor!!! Congratulations! Keep up the good work!

Weight Loss How do you do it Jan 07 2009

I have to agree with the previous posters....you have to plan ahead! I do most of my meal planning /cooking on Sunday night, too. I have a job that puts me on the road a lot. One of the biggest problems I face is hunger with no good options. So, being faced with the choice of fast food or hunger pangs, I have learned to pack lots of small snacks that I can eat while driving (cheese sticks (fat free), fruit, baggies of turkey or roast beef, box of raisins). It works out pretty good. In the instance I forget-I can stop at a supermarket and pick up 3 oz. of lean meat at the deli. Sounds a little weird but it keeps me away from the chicken cheese steak.

Your will is your key to success. How bad do you really want to change? Each time you are faced with adversity, think about this before you make a move. The food choices can become easy ones after a while. It's the exercise piece that trips me up sometimes....Good luck!

Weight Loss Just starting Jan 01 2009
01:26 (UTC)

Hey Nilap!

WELCOME!! If you stick with this for even a short time-you will love what changes come about. I have been here for I guess almost a year. I am not at my goal weight but I also learned a lot about what that means. Once you start paying attention to what you are putting into your body when you eat...big changes will happen!

As far as motivation, I believe that when the first few pounds melt off, it is a lot easier and more motivating to move it off the couch and towards some activity. My advice would be to peruse the site and read some Q&A. You will begin learning very quickly. But like spoiled candy said: you need to make a plan. Develop some goals. Do you want to weigh a certain amount or just fit into a certain size? With strength training, I learned that you can't really go by pounds. At one point, I was actually smaller than I had expected but weighed more than I thought I should have...I was building muscle and losing fat. Beginners tend to drop weight very quickly in the first few weeks. Just stick with it for that long and I think you will love your new life!!!!! Good luck!

I lift weights too. But I do not go to the gym. I have a bench at home. I did, however, start boxing this week. WOW!! I know what you mean about intimidated! Not only do I feel like the guys look at you funny but I am the only girl...period! I have not seen a woman in there yet! You know what? Just lift your head up high and be proud that you are doing it! Maybe they are the ones that are intimidated. Keep up the good work!

Susiecue-very lnterseting!I did not know a body could only burn a certain amount of fat in a day. Does that apply to all people? I mean, super athletes and the like? Does it depend on anything or that is just the way the body functions? You learn something new everyday!

I don't think you are eating enough. I know, that's what everyone trying to lose weight does not want to hear. You have increased your exercise and therefore need to increase your caloric intake. Your body will begin storing fat as fuel thinking that you are starving it....(starvation mode). Also, it does not matter what time of day you eat. It's calories in- calories out. I have pretty much the same stats 5'4 - 131- 21% BF- 31 yrs old. It would probably be helpful to figure out your RMR. That is what your body burns simply by "being", now add any activity onto that. To lose weight, you can decrease that number, maintain-eat that amount. DO NOT go below 1200 calories a day. The more you exercise, the more fuel your body needs. You do not want to lose muscle, just fat. If you don't give your body enough fuel that is what happens. Good luck-hope that was helpful to you!

Well, here is the deal- in case anybody is still paying attention to this post. I don't typically go by the scale (although I do step on about once every 2-3 weeks). I go by the way my clothes are fitting. I definitely have more fat on my belly now as I can no longer see my muscles, just chub! It's not water weight, etc because I don't get my period anymore (I haven't for 3 years now- medical reasons- not because I'mm grossly underweight....I think we all got that)

My diet is all organic vegetables, tofu, lots of fish and chicken, 2 pieces of fruit a day and lots of protein (at least 80 grams a day). I do indulge the ocassional starbucks coffee (black w/sweet & lo). I eat 6 small meals a day but make the last my biggest because I have a nighttime eating problem.

I lift weights M,W,F with 30 minutes of aerobics/strength training on the other days with one day of rest. I am telling you that I am doing this by the book. I cannot understand why this is happeneing. I can only assume that the calories are too high.

Thanks Moonbay! You took the words right out of my mouth. When I woke up this morning, I actually felt like I was hung over. I don't drink anymore but that feeling came back after eating all that candy (BTW- not one trick-or-treater!). I still can't shake that hideous feeling. I've been drinking water hoping it would do something.....ugh!

Before you invest money in any skin care line, do your homework!! There is a book called "Don't go to the cosmetics counter without me". It's long but you can kind of go through it pretty quickly. The point is there are cosmetics companies that advertise certain qualities in their products that may or may not have positive effects on the skin topically. Also, expensive products (La Mer) have the same (sometimes less) of the active ingredients of inexpensive products (Clean & Clear). I think after you read this book you have a better understanding of some of the marketing tricks out there vs. what you really need in a skincare line. Good luck in your search!!

I got a great recipe in NROLFW for spaghetti squash. Throw some ground turkey,  chopped zucchini, some canned tomatoes, and garlic into a saute pan. Cook about 10 minutes and put over the squash. It's delicious!!

pinkchubbymonkey is right! Don't beat yourself up over a few bad days. I know, easier said than done but a couple of weeks ago I was doing the same thing. I don't know what brings it on but....it happens. Just pick yourself up and move on (like the good people here on CC told me). Best of luck!!

OMG, I just had my first experience with this cool vegetable the other day. I bought it specifically for a recipe and was so amazed at how it really looks like spaghetti! Anyway, there is an awesome recipe in New Rules of Lifting for Women. It has ground turkey with tomatoes and zucchini over spaghetti squash. It is delicious...(and very healthy!).

I guess I am going to read through that again. It's not really a bad hurt, it's a muscle sore thing but I really didn't think that I was supposed to use my back at all. If it's not a safe exercise (especially for beginners...is there a recommendation for an alternative that will provide the same benefits?

Amethystgirl is so right! I got the book and started the program. Granted, I'm still in stage 1 but it is fun and very challenging. In fact, they talk a lot about challenging yourself in the book. Every time you do a new set, try to increase your weight or reps. It's like a game! You should give the book a shot- you might not so bored...

You don't necessarily need weights to build muscle. There are some regular activities that will work muscles too. I don't know what type of climate you live in but you can hike, tennis, swimming, rock climbing, martial arts, kayaking, etc. Most of these you can do for free- again, depending on where you live and the time of year. If something bores you, you might as well throw in the towel because you probably will lose the motivation to keep at it. Good luck, I hope you find a fun way to get that muscle!!!

Again, I am no professional but I don't think you are eating enough! The rockstar is my weakness too and I was told to give it up. Same thing with the fake butter. The chemical and processed stuff in those things are no good for you. They will also encourage sugar cravings. Try adding a little more lean protein to your diet. Chicken, fish, etc. The protein helps keep you full for a longer period of time. I really think breakfast is a MUST for anyone trying to maintain their weight or a healthy lifestyle for that matter. All of your nutrients is coming from really lunchtime on. Even out you eating schedule a little bit and it might make a huge difference. Hope things return to normal for you.

Congratulations! I know it takes dedication and hard work to reach goals like that! I thank you for your feedback. I do agree that I am pretty fortunate to have a child intersted in fitness considering the obesity rate in this country (oh yeah, I mean the US). Thanks again and keep up the fantastic work!!
