I was reading in one of my textbooks today that dieting (unless you are obese) before you finish puberty (around 18-19) can cause you to be more obese as an adult, because you train your body to survive in starvation mode. Therefore, as an adult, your body grasps on to every ounce of fat it can in order to protect itself should you starve it. Therefore, restricting your calories at your age may set you up for more problems with your weight later in life. Also, the 1200 calorie minimum is for ADULTS. You need to keep in mind you are still growing, and therefore your body needs more calories. There was a website someone posted awhile back that calculated the number of calories teens need according to their weight and height, however I cannot find it. I know that at 19, 5'3'' and 128 pounds (note: I am nowhere near being overweight, and I weigh seven to five pounds more than you and am a whole five inches shorter. While I'm not basing my conclusion on any scientific measurement, I'm pretty sure this lends itself to the idea that you are very probably underweight.) Basically, establish a healthy relationship with food now, one in which rather than counting calories, you make it a goal to eat nutritious foods, in order to avoid weight, mental and health problems later down the road. |

| Well, lots of people are telling you to stand up to him, but aren't giving you what you asked for. I assume standing up to your dad isn't an option. Try any of the "Curves" gyms. Last I knew, there were all female, relatively cheap and being that I've gone to one in Sumter I assume they have them in Columbia! | |||

I was about to start a thread about this! It's SO FRUSTRATING. I hate that everyone tells me I shouldn't diet and tries to act like I could have an eating disorder for even MENTIONING counting my calories. I'm 130 pounds and between 5'2'' and 5'3''. I can relate to the "bones and fat" predicament. I have an incredibly small bone structure, so while I may not look fat, that's all that's hanging off my bones. I would like to get to around 115, as that's where I was when I was cheering last year. |

Ahh, I'm in the same predicament. SOUP. Soup is my best friend. It's pretty high in sodium, but low in calories and relatively good for you. Along with everyone else, I eat a lot of oatmeal. You can also find a lot of single-serve microwavable vegetable bowls and packets. As for non-microwaved foods, I'm a huge fan of turkey on wheat bread. When I want something sweet, I go for a piece of toasted wheat bread with peanut butter and honey. (It sounds a bit weird, but trust me, it's AMAZING.) |

I must agree...I love my heels, they make me feel confident. Let's also throw in that I'm around 5'2'' though. I will attest to the fact that they're horrible for you though, I've been having to wear them for work, and I bounce back and forth between work and class. My knees are KILLING ME right now. I decided to switch over to my Uggs for walking. |

| Weight Loss | So I am overweight on one site but not on the next? | Feb 03 2008 07:05 (UTC) |

| I agree, the formula immccarthy used said I should be under 115, since I'm a little over 5'2'' and have an extremely small frame. While I'm definitely not happy at my current 132, I don't think I NEED to lose about 20 pounds. So basically, don't pay too much attention to BMI calculators, as everyone has said, they're incredibly outdated. You basically need to eat healthily and exercise regularly...your ideal weight will come. | |||
| Weight Loss | So, I've been messing up pretty bad every now and then...? | Jan 24 2008 02:39 (UTC) |

You know, I know it sounds weird, but I had been doing really well on my "diet". Then I had a three day weekend this weekend and ate/drank at LEAST 3,000 calories a day.....I got back on the scale tuesday, and had lost TWO POUNDS. So I guess messing up some is okay, it won't throw you off too badly. But 600 calories a day is nowhere NEAR enough. If you're yo-yoing on your diet like that, you're going to wind up gaining weight, because your body thinks it's starving one day, so the next it holds on to more calories than it normally would. You need to get at least 1200 a day of healthy things...I'm a small girl, so I need to only eat 1200 if I want to lost weight, and I find it hard to eat 3 decent meals plus 2 snacks a day. I cannot even imagine how little your eating if you're only consuming 600 calories. Also, losing 15 pounds is 3 weeks is not a reasonable or healthy goal. You have to set reasonable goals or else you're going to get discouraged and be more inclined to mess up your diet. As far as tips, it's high in sodium, but soup has been my life-saver. It's pretty filling and really low in calories. Pair it with a grilled cheese sandwich on wheat bread and some protein and you've got a full meal for about 300 calories! |
