When I was in high school, I played both football and baseball.  In football, I started as a junior and lost my starting position (but had significant playing time) as a senior -- I'm glad I didn't miss out on that season.  I was a better baseball player, actually and started on the varsity team my sophomore & junior years -- I quit just before the season started my senior year due to a "disagreement" with the coach.  Looking back, this was one of the worst decisions I have ever made and one that I have regretted.

I realize that my decision hurt a lot of people:  First, and foremost, my Father.  My Father played professional baseball (St. Louis Browns) and it was a game that he loved.  He never, ever, pushed me to play ANY sport, but attended not only every game, but most of my practices when he could.  He never tried to "mold me" and only gave me advice when I asked.  When I told him I quit the team, he only said "Well, that's your decision."  but I could see the disappointment in his eyes.  Second, it wasn't fair to the team -- regardless of how much playing time you have, each person on the team plays a significant role.  Making a decision to quit affects everyone.

Your son's future aspirations and intellect have nothing to do with quitting the team.  I have 2 graduate degrees and teach at a local university, our starting qb from high school is now an orthodontist, our starting TE is an architect and my best friend who was a back-up safety is an anesthesiologist.  My advice would be for him to remain on the team and honor the commitment that he made.  No one, in future employment, is going to care that he quit, however, his friends and teammates in the here-and-now will care.  He needs understand teamwork and commitment.  I would make this recommendation regardless of whether it was the football team, the band, the drama club, etc...

Good luck and I hope he understands.

Yeah, we're tricky like that.

Speaking Italian cancels out the mullet, so you've gained back some percentage points, 'Bama.

Actually, it enhances the mullet!

One does not expect such complexity in Alabama...are you sure you just don't have some bbq sauce on your face?

Alas, I am a sophisticated Northerner who has admired the Tide from afar since the age of 10...  I assure you my face is clean.

Actually, the thought of Brandon Spikes and his partner-in-crime, Urban Meyer are what make me sick.
