Last Week: 169.0 This week: 167.4 It's nice to see the scale going in the right direction. The funny thing is that I barely worked out at all this week. (I have a medical condition that has bad periods and good periods. It affects my core, so during the bad periods, I can do very little. ) Anyway, it's nice to see the scale going down again. I'm feeling better, so I'm back to working out again. Congrats Brett & amayou82! |

I'm still here. It's been a rough few weeks. And I've been eating too much and working out too little. I finally got back on track this week, but there's plenty of damage to undo. June 13, 164.6 Today 165 For as badly as I've been slacking, the damage isn't that bad...... |

I know that it's not Friday, but I am moving today and tomorrow, and probably won't even be able to find the scale tomorrow. Rather than skip the weigh in, I figured I would weigh in early. Despite my frustration last week, I've just been sticking with things. Not working out a whole lot, because packing has taken over my life.....but here goes...

I'm quite sick, and unbelievably stressed right now, so please pardon my negativity... Last Week: 164.6 This Week: 165.6 So, I did all the right things this week: ate right, got back on track with my working out, and I'm fatter than I was last week. Sweet. I'm glad doing the right thing is working out so well for me.....
Kirsten- You will find the 160s, I know it. |

I went and had my RMR tested. I had it done at a gym, and it was free. I believe most places charge for the test, but I guess one of the benefits of having my husband my husband in the military is that we have excellent fitness facilities. Basically, you are supposed to be as lazy as humanly possible before the test. You shouldn't eat or drink for at least two hours before the test either. (If you are moving a lot or eating or drinking, it will make your results inaccurate.) When you go in, they sit you in a chair, ask you a few questions, and then they have you breathe into a tube for 5-10 minutes. The tube is hooked up to a computer, and at the end it gives you your RMR, and I was also given a range of calories to eat. The lower number is for days when I don't work out, and a higher number for when I do work out. I definately found it to be worth it. |

So, I've fallen way off the bandwagon. I've been sticking with the eating right, but not so much the working out. (It's nice that I don't even want to go back to eating the way I did before....)I haven't been logging my food or anything, and I've been eating entirely too much salt (and food, for that matter). Anyway, back at it. Previous weight: 167.3 Friday's weight: 165.8 Nice work Brett! You must feel like a completely new man! Kirsten, you'll get there this week! |

I know it's frustrating. (I was getting so frustrated with my own progress that I had to put the scale away. I only take it out once a week for my weigh in, and it feels good to not be so focused on a number). It sounds like your seamstress needs a kick in the teeth! |

| The Lounge | Were you adopted? | May 27 2008 05:08 (UTC) |
4 |
I am not adopted, but my husband's entire family is adopted. His parents are white. My husband, the oldest was adopted from the USA. Then, they adopted another boy, who was from El Salvador. Next is a girl, also from El Salvador; a boy from Guatemala; a girl from Chile, and another boy from the USA. The youngest was a foster child, whom they just ended up adopting after having him for several years. They were all adopted into NH, which at the time, had a population that was mostly Caucasian. The only issues that they have ever expressed were just a few things like name calling in high school. As for the relationship with the parents, they all consider their parents to be their parents. No questions asked. The only desire any of them have expressed in being connected with their birth families is just to obtain medical history. If anything, I have noticed a stronger loyalty between them then you sometimes see in other families. They all feel as though they were chosen by their parents, wanted, and given a better life as a result. Their parents did not have a strong focus on connecting the children with their culture, but all of the children, except for the middle son, were adopted at a very young age. They all identify as being American. The middle son, being older when he was brought to the states has been effected. Spanish was his first language, and he moved to an environment where nobody else spoke that language. He also had the opportunity to learn some of the traditions and things of Guatemala, and I do think that he misses that. Now that they are older, and live in more diverse populations, sometimes they are approached and spoken to in the language that people expect them to speak, and when they don't understand what people are saying to them, that can be a bit awkward. So, I guess, my advice to you would be to try and make their culture and language accessible to them if they want it, but I wouldn't force it. |

Leave the guilt at the door and start over today. You would have had to eat an awful lot to undo months of healthy eating. One pound is 3500 calories, so you would have had to have eaten 3500 more than what you burned. 17,500 extra calories to gain 5 pounds. Additionally, you have made some changes that stick even when you do slip. Your body has gotten used to eating a certain amount of food every day, and is going to send you some pretty strong signals when it's had enough. Not to mention, it sounds like you still made some healthy choices the rest of the time. So, yeah, you probably did a little bit of damage, but I'm sure it isn't as bad as you think. |

Original Post by amberwolg: At the risk of sounding like a jerk, from what you posted, it doesn't sound like you even attempted to do this the healthy way. Eating 600 calories a day means that you are starving yourself, plain and simple. Your body is going to hold on to every single calorie it gets because it isn't getting enough. As ridiculous as it sounds, try eating at least 1200 every day and you will probably break the plateau. Like the others said, drink lots of water, and limit your salt intake, especially the few days before the wedding. I know that it is crunch time, and you want to look amazing on your wedding day, but I promise you that you will not be thinking about 5 extra pounds as you walk down the aisle. |

I don't have an answer for you, but I've wondered the same thing. Fruit is low calorie, but really high in sugar, and sugar is not your friend when you are trying to lose weight. |

I spent three months on Ortho-Tricyclen lo, which is a lo dose tri-phasic pill. Prior to beginning this pill, I was losing one pound a week, every week for several months. When I started the pill, I did not change my caloric intake or my workout habits, except to workout harder. Once I started the pill, I stopped losing weight. I didn't gain anything, but I could not lose the weight. I went and had my RMR tested, to make sure that I was eating the correct amount of calories, and I was. I also continued to work harder during my workouts, but with no results. So, I went back to the doctor and switched my birth control to Lo-Ovral which is a mono-phasic pill. I've been back on it for about two weeks, and am back to losing weight, despite the fact that I haven't been working out much in the past two weeks. With that being said, I am not a doctor. I don't know if I had been losing weight on the first pill, but retaining water, or if I really just wasn't losing. |

| Weight Loss | Help with Stomach Fat Pouch ! | May 26 2008 23:06 (UTC) |
8 |
This is going to sound random, but I read an article that mentioned that the best way to get a flat stomach is to do lunges and squats. The reason is that the muscles that you work in those movements are large, and working large muscle groups will help you burn more fat over time. Additionally, if you have a layer of fat covering the abdominal muscles, doing lots of crunches won't get rid of that layer of fat. It can, however, sometimes make those muscles bugger, which will actually make your stomach look bigger. |

I have a condition called interstitial cystitis. Basically, it's a bladder condition where the walls of my bladder are stiff and scarred and full of ulcers. As a result, my bladder doesn't stretch much, but if I eat or drink certain things, it causes something similar to an allergic reaction inside my bladder. Well, prior to my diagnosis, I didn't know what things I should or shouldn't be eating or drinking, so my bladder was constantly having this reaction. Over time, it caused all of the muscles in my core and pelvis to be constantly in spasm as well. I couldn't do anything that involved my core or I would end up in the hospital. I obviously gained weight, not only from lack of movement, but also because I was miserable and eating to try and cope. After my diagnosis, I literally had to retrain all of the muscles in my core to function properly. I learned to take it very slowly. I still struggle with my condition sometimes, but it has gotten better. It has taken me two years, but I have lost 30 pounds so far. Just remember to take it slowly. This isn't a marathon. It's a journey, and if you have set backs, be kind to yourself. You are changing your life. |

| Weight Loss | Does birth control affect weight loss/gain? | May 19 2008 00:38 (UTC) |

I started a new birth control pill three months ago. Prior to that, I had been losing one poind per week. Since going on the pill I have not gained weight, but I have not lost anything either. (The only time I lose a pound is in the 4th week of pills, where you take the placebo pills, but that pound in back the next week). I monitor my calories on this website, so I know that I have not increased the amount that I eat. I have not changed the amount that I work out either, although I have increased the intensity. I do think that the pill has something to do with my inability to lose weight, but I cant say for certain whether it's real weight that I am holding on to, or water weight. |

Last week: 167.3 This week: 167.8 I've been having a relapse with my medical condition lately, and haven't been able to work out. To top it off, I lost my willpower and I ate like a moose a few times this week. I'm going to the doctor next week, so hopefully we can get it worked out.
Way to go Brett! And just so you know, all that heat you've been having in the bay area has migrated down here to the san diego area..I hope you hit the 220s soon! |

I started taking ortho tri cyclen lo three months ago. At the time, I weighed 168 pounds, and had been losing one pound each week. Right now, I still weigh 168 pounds. I log everything that I eat on this website, so I know that I have not been over eating or eating poorly since going back on the pill. I am still working out the same amount, although I have increased the intensity that I work out, but I am no longer losing weight. My skinny jeans that fit me fine once I hit 170, no longer fit. At this point it would be a safe bet to say that the bc pill is the cause of my weight loss stalling. I am thankful that I have not gained, but not losing is making me cranky. I have also had the pleasure of having every side effect possible with this pill. I had been hoping that once my body adjusted, I would be fine, but no such luck. I'm going back to the doctor next week to try another pill. |

I have not personally tried it, but I know several people who have. They all regained the weight once they stopped the plan. It seems to me that if you are just have food delivered you don't every actually learn how to portion food for yourself. You don't learn how to prepare things in a healthy manner, and learning those things seem to be critical in long lasting success. |

| Weight Loss | Will the real BMR please stand up? ... | May 13 2008 19:55 (UTC) |

If you really want to know for certain, you could always go and get your RMR tested. RMR is the number of calories that your body burns just existing (pumping blood, regulating temperature, heart beating..) It's essentially the same as BMR, but can be tested more easily. They offer this test as gyms, and some health centers. I had mine done, and basically, all you do is breathe into this machine for about 10 minutes. The machine then gives you your RMR, and when I had mine done, it also gave me a window for how many calories I should be eating. I found out that I was not eating enough at all, and since I increased my calorie intake, I've been losing weight again. Sometimes, the test costs money, but I felt like it was worth it just to know for sure that I was on the right track. |

I love my bread machine. I use it at least three times a week. I love to make bagels in mine. (You can add some dried onion flakes if you like onion bagels, or add poppy seeds or whatever in the mixing process). I have found that without all of the junk that store bought breads and bagels have, you reduce the calories by quite a bit. I made whole wheat pizza dough last night in mine. I have also added Italian seasoning in the mixing process of pizza dough before and it gives the crust a little extra flavor. |

I was doing well for quite awhile. I felt like I was making amazing progress. Unfortunately, my husband is in the military and with all of the deployments, I see different doctors all the time. Most of them have never even heard of IC. I went in recently to get another prescription for birth control. I requested the brand that has been working for me, without giving me any problems, but my last doctor decided to change my birth control and I think that this has been the cause of my flares. I've made an appointment, but again, with so many deployments, it's a month long wait to be seen. |

| Weight Loss | Anyone else a spouse of a deployed service member? | May 07 2008 19:56 (UTC) |

Hey! I too am a Marine wife. My husband is not deployed at the moment, but I lost weight during our first deployment, and the second deployment is right around the corner. The biggest thing that helped me curb the emotional eating was to think about him. When he left, I told him that I would try my best to stay strong. When I was tempted to throw myself a pity party and eat everything in sight (and trust me, I was tempted), I would ask what he would say if saw me doing that. He would have been so disappointed. It is hard enough for him to be gone, and to be fighting for our country, but to have me falling apart at home would have made it worse for him. Yes, there were days where I did fall apart, but the one part of the deployment that I could control was how I reacted to it. If I caved in to the emotional eating, I was letting the deployment control me. Plus, I didn't tell him that I was trying to lose weight, so thinking about the moment when he stepped off that bus was very motivating. Now, when he came home, we had lots of dinners out. We went to Hawaii for two weeks, and ate and drank everything in sight. I gained 5 of the pounds that I lost back, but it didn't even matter. If I could go back and do it differently, I wouldn't. I just wanted to spend that time with my husband, laughing and hanging out, having a good time, and being focused on my weight loss would have taken away from that. |

Nice work Brett and Kirsten! A loss is a loss, and although it might be a big as you hoped, at least it's going down. I went and had my RMR tested on Wednesday, and basicially the woman that did the test told me that I slower I lose weight the better. I've been frustrated at how slowly I've been losing, but she said that it's better to lose slowly, so I guess that's good. |
