Weight Loss Under counting calories? Feb 08 2009

Been there......

I lamented about how much exercise I was doing, and how little food I ate, and how unfair it was, and how I must have a dodgy metabolism......

When I carefully went back to weighing and logging every single thing that passed my lips, I started losing weight again - magic.

Don't feel foolish, we've all been there.  So now you know better, and you can start afresh - good luck,

Hi Kindal,

I don't know any alternatives to your syrup, but I would advise that perhaps you try and cut out syrup and other highly refined sugar altogether.  They are empty calories, and are quickly metabolised, making you hungry again soon.  The problem with using diet versions of sweet things is that you aren't re-educating your tastebuds, and you are keeping your craving for sugars going.

There are others here who are much more expert than I on these things, but I suggest that you investigate the Glycemic Index (GI) scale for foods.  Sugary foods and foods high in refined starch (high GI foods) metabolise quickly and make you hungry fast.  Foods that are high in fibre, complex carbs and protein (low GI foods) take much longer to digest, release energy slowly and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

I also second what has been said above, if you are serious about losing weight, a failure to plan is a plan to fail....(as the trainier in my gym says!).  Sit down and plan your meals for the next few days, and go and buy the ingredients you need.  If you know exactly what your next delicious healthy meal is, and when you are going to have it, you can live with an hour or two's hunger pangs.

Veggie snacks are also fantastic for keeping your hunger at bay.  I keep chopped carrots and homemade low fat hummus in my fridge for snack attacks.

Good luck,

A

Try upping your protein and try to have some with every meal.  Protein, fibre and water are my weapons against hunger....

And perhaps you can eat up to maintence calories, if you really are hungry - it's only one day, and life is too short to spend a day hungry and worrying about food.

Vegetarian 1400 Calories to lose weight? I will starve-HELP! Feb 03 2009

Hi Future,

I'm a pescitarian, and I'm also a runner, and I understand your alarm at 1400 calories!  I usually eat around 1450, but more on days where I exercise a lot.

I hate feeling hungry and deprived - here's a few tips I've picked up:

  • Protein fills you up - try and have some with every meal - you will feel fuller for longer - low fat dairy, beans, lentils, fish
  • Eat lots of fibre - again you will feel fuller for longer.
  • You can eat heaps of vegetables and fruit, and they have very few calories
  • Explore the GI index.  Low GI foods release energy slower and keep you fuller for longer
  • Avoid refined sugars - you will feel hungry again soon after eating them
  • Try eating 4 or five smaller meals instead of 3 big ones.
  • Tailor your calorie intake to your day.  For example, Sunday's I do a long run, and using the exercise tool here, I calculate that I burn over 1000 calories, so on that day I can eat a lot more and still have a defecit of 500 - 800 kCals.
  • Even on light exercise days, never go lower than 1400 calories.  The hunger isn't worth it.
  • And if you  are really hungry - have a maintenence day - it's not a race to the finish, and one day won't hurt too much in the grand scheme of things.

Good luck

Tofu is very versatile and it will take on the flavours of the food that you cook it with.  Marinades are a great way to inject flavour.  I use it in italian chinese and indian foods and it takes on the flavour of the sauces.

Fitness getting hounded by trainers at the gym....need to vent Jan 26 2009

I feel embarassed and singled out if a trainer approaches me, and had such a bad experience once that I had to leave and find a new gym.  However, if they are offering a free consultation, you just might learn something new and pick up a few tips.  You could thank the trainer for his / her interest and tell them that while you are OK for today, you would be happy to make an appointment to come in and spend some time with them at a more convenient time.  A shake up in your routine might be just the thing....

If they are simply drumming up business, complain to the management.

Congrats on your weight loss so far.

I think that riding an exercise bike is low impact on your joints and so it's a good exercise for you to start with.  I don't think it will do any physical harm to you to bike every day, but perhaps to add variety you might take a day or two off from it a week and go for a walk or something instead.  It will engage a different set of muscles, and prevent you getting bored with your routine.

A little word of caution - you might need a few more that 2000 calories per day to keep your weight loss going.

keep up the good work though - it seems to be working well for you

Foods Question about Avocado. Jan 25 2009

Hi,

I usually half the avocado and leave the stone in one half - that keeps that half from going black, and it should be OK for several days if you store it in the fridge. If you don't eat all of the half without the stone, try chopping it and squeezing a lime over it.  Keep in a sealed container in the fridge, where it will keep for a day or so without going black.

The leader of the opposition in the UK has recently been spouting about people having to take personal responsiblity for their weight problems (as well as drug / alcohol problems).  I am loath to agree with any Tory politician in principle, and I remember from the last time they were in power, the damaging effects their policies on "personal responsibility" can be when taken to extremes.

However, I know from my own experience, that there is only so much government, health systems and the food industry can do.  My obesity was caused my me sitting on the sofa and eating junk.  My obesity was cured by my taking responsibility for what passed my lips, and getting up off my ass.  If I had been hectored and lectured about it would it have made me change any sooner? The answer is no, I would have been even more miserable and depressed and had even lower self esteem.

I eat peppered smoked mackerel.  It's sold in a sort of vacuum package, and is found in the chilled cabinet.  It's delicious, it's so good for you, it's a natural source of the good type of fatty acids, and is a great protein source.  I have never tried canned mackerel, but mackerel is delicious fresh or smoked.  It's got a really nice strong flavour.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far.  What is your daily calorie intake and what calorie deficit do you have?

Calorie Count Adding New Foods Jul 23 2008

Most nutritional labels give data per portion and per 100g.  If you entered the data per portion of food and ate a portion - then the amount of grams that you entered doesn't matter, as CC will log the actual number of calories consumed.  There is an option to log data per 100g, and if you used that, then obviously it matters how many grams you consumed.

My advise to you is if it was yesterday, forget it, learn for next time and move on. It's not going to make a huge difference if you consider it spread over a week / or a month, which is how you should view weight loss.  You could go back to yesterday's log by selecting yesterday at the bottom of your food log, then delete the entry and add it again, but I personally think that life's to short to stress out too much over one portion of food.

Hope that helps you,

Ax

Thanks guys!  Orgainsing the move and getting everything finished here is quite stressful, so it's great to be assured that at least it will be easy to maintain my healthy lifestyle.  I guess I seem to associate Ireland with breakfast rolls, crisps, lucozade and chocolate!!!!!  Carol - thanks so much for the gym tips - I will definitely be checking both of those out.

I assume that possibly this "detox" system had a very low sodium content, and there was more liquid than just the water especially with the title "the amazing hydrating diet".  Lots of liquid and not enough potassium / sodium / electrolytes can seriously mess with your system.

This is just too sad.  I seriously worry about all those people who post on here about their "detox" plans.  The short and long term risks of messing with your body like that are frightening.  I think I'm going to tag this thread so I can direct the next detox question here to see the consequences.  Thanks for posting this.

I used to wear 3 bra's when I first started.  A really good sports bra with lots of support, adjustable back & shoulders.  On top of that one of those crop sports bras that you pull on (gives the uniboob look), and then the vest with the shelf.  Those puppies never budged.  I've lost 30kgs since I first started running, and (sob sob....) this is no longer a problem.  I still wear my 3 bra combo though, in a desperate attempt to keep the little I have left from sagging any more than they already are!!!  Happy running all xxxx

Weight Loss What am I doing wrong? Jul 22 2008

At 105kg - I think you need to be eating more, if you are very sure that you have accurately counted your calories (logged every bite, and weighed every portion). When you enter your stats into CC I'm pretty sure that it will tell you to be eating more than 1100 - 1350 per day.  This link is a pretty good alternative way to figure out what you should be consuming per day http://www.phord.com/cc .  You should keep your deficit to somewhere between 500 - 1000 Kcals per day.  Any more  and your metabolism will switch to starvation mode and begin to conserve energy.

I would also recommend that you try up your walking to every day if your knees allow it, you should try to incorporate as much daily exercise as you can into your life.  Swimming is an excellent form of exercise, especially with weak knees.  You might also investigate doing some form of weight training.

Motivation How does one igore those cravings? Jul 22 2008
08:14 (UTC)

If you crave something sweet, try substituting some berries or grapes.  A grape is incredibly sweet and is  approximately 2 cals per grape.  Blueberries are another sweet snack which is very good for you.  Fruit contains natural sugars, and is packed full of vitamins and antioxidants.

Processed carbs like donuts, breads, sweets, chips etc can be addictive, as the surge then crash of blood sugar that they cause make you crave more.   Perhaps investigate low GI foods which slow release energy and keep you feeling satisfied for longer. You could try subsitituting wholemeal bread for white bread, go for high fibre cereals, or avoid them althogether (way too much salt & sugar in most of them), replace sugary or processed carb snacks with fruit or nuts.

One thing that has worked well for me is when I am craving something full of carbs, I eat some high quality protein instead - a boiled egg, some smoked mackerel, a few nuts.  It makes me full and satisfied, instead of wanting more a half hour later.

Fitness I want to run but............... Jul 21 2008

When I first started running, that's exactly what I used to do.  I felt that people would laugh at me if they saw me.  I did that for quite some months, as it was during the summer, and, when my circumstances changed, and I had to run at other times, I was a lot more into my running, and cared a lot less what people thought, so it didn't bother me.  Go for it - that's the great thing about running, you can do it any time or place that suits you.  Good luck xxx

The Lounge Has anyone completely changed their career? Jul 21 2008
12:10 (UTC)

I have completely changed career in the last few years.  I have a B.Sc in Food Science and Nutrition and worked in the food industry for almost 10 years.  I rose to the position of a senoir technical manager, and while it was an interesting area to work in, and the money was excellent, I began to feel that I had exhausted my interest in the area and wanted to do something I felt was a little more worthwhile. Initially I took 2 years leave of absence to volunteer as a VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas).

I decided while working in the developing world, that returning to industry was not for me, and decided on a complete career change.  I returned to study a 3 year degree in therapy radiography (treatment of cancer using radiation), and have just finished my degree.  While I loved returning to academia, I found the subjects incredibly interesting, I enjoyed being mentally stimulated again,  financially, things were difficult.  I have also found during my clinical attachments  that the working culture in the health care industry is not for me.  So now, I have 2 B.Sc's, I don't want to return to the food industry, and am totally unsuited to the tight working teams required for radiotherapy.  I'm looking at taking an admin job in the short term, and doing a M.Sc. in public health over the next few years.

I would advise you that if you want to change career, by all means do so, just be very very careful that you will be able to adapt to the different working conditions in your new field.  It's one thing to be interested in the subject area, but another thing totally to be able to work in it.  Good luck xxx

Edit: I suppose what I am trying to say, is that I don't regret changing careers, I do regret what I changed to, and I wish I had paid more attention to the actual job at the end rather than just the interesting subjects I was studying.....
