Hi Pinkrose (and everyone else who has these concerns), I am now living with my bf of 2 years (we moved in together last march and I actually lived in a different city an hour away until last sept), but up until March, I too was a single mom and have done the weight loss battle for many years. I am pretty lucky, my son wasn’t picky and tried pretty much anything. Now at the age of 12 I have to demand he eat salad or a piece of fruit and he will but I have to push it. Its not that he does not like those healthy foods, he just rather have cookies!! (so would I heehee) Here are a few things you can try to hopefully get your child (and this goes for anyone) to eat healthier: 1. the old "you eat what is in front of you or you don’t eat at all" can work for most kids, but not all, but this may be worth a shot. If they are hungry enough, most kids will try anything. 2. Cook healthy without them knowing! There are tons of tips, tricks and recipes out there that cut out fat and high calories but dont cut out the taste! I for one now make chocolate chip cookies with using at least 50% whole wheat or chilli, meatballs, burgers with turkey or chicken rather then beef. There are tons of other things you can do to "healthen" up any recipe 3. Make it a game.. a theme night like - lets try a new veggie night or something fun. Get your son involved. Tell him when you go shopping its up to him to pick a new fruit or veggie to try that week. EVen at 4, if a child feels involved its amazing what they will try. I don’t know if any of this will help, but hopefully it does! But please, keep strong and good luck! Maybe if he sees you eating better he will to! Good luck and stay strong!!

I love the Recipe analyzer too. And you can tag the recipe if it is something you will make again. I keep all of my favourite recipes in the tagged section including desserts, main courses, salads and breads! That way you can cook and bake to your hearts content (I love to do both) and enjoy your own efforts! And it helps you decide if that treat or special meal is really worth it in the end and helps make your favourite recipes even healthier! Good luck!

If you are really concerned I would go see a Gynecologist. Some times GPs' are just too general. Maybe someone who is more familar with the female system can help. Good luck. |

I think 1 cup works out to about 187 calories. 1/4 cup would be about 46.6 cals each so 140 + 46.6 = 187ish Did I do that right? LOL

Hi jrenaldo
First of all, congrats on your weight loss. That is amazing and you probably feel amazing. I am no expert, but I think that since you were not getting in your min caloric need for the day your body probably started to hit starvation mode. Now that you are getting in the proper calories, your body is clinging to them for dear life just in case you drop your intake again. The only thing I can suggest and it is probably not what you want to hear its "give it time". Your body needs to readjust to the new intake level and realize that its not going to be starved. Once that happens I think the last few pounds will come off slowly. But dont look at the 2 lb gain as a failure. It is just your body adjusting and fending for its self. Just keep up the exercise and proper calorie intake and maybe add more strength training in to help build up muscle. Also remember that muscle weighs more then fat so maybe taking measurements is a good idea as well. Good luck and keep up the great work. I hope this helps.

Hello Ellawog and welcome!!
I had gastric bypass almost 3 years ago (Sept 2005) and have had some battles as well. I lost about 140 lbs, gained back 30 and now am down a total of 160lbs. Now I am having some issues right now where I cannot eat much at all without pain (dont let that scare you for we are still trying to figure out why and have no idea if it has anything to do with the by pass), so I a, dealing with a lot of issues too. I understand your fear of gaining weight back. That is why I joined this site. It will be great to have someone in a similar situation to talk to and give support to as well as get support from. If you want to add me as a friend please do, it will be great having a fellow by-passer on this site. Good luck and I hope to hear from you. |

Scott and Jane
Thank you for your responses and may I saw how happy I am to hear you are healthy Scott. I have to admit, this does weigh heavily on my mind but I am hoping for the best outcome. For me its a matter of them finding "something" after struggling for so long with no answers. I get my blood work checked very often, especially when they are continuing investigations. My creatinine and Kidney functions enzymes are all normal and I have now had 2 bladder infections in less then a month that have caused more pain then child birth, but the tests are only showing moderate infections around 2 weeks after the pain increases. So I am at a loss and maybe reaching for straws, but hey, if this promts me to fine tune my eating, then why not. I have lost a lot of weight but hope to lose about 40 more pounds, my diabetes is very carefuly controled and my blood preasure has always been excellent so I have that going for me. So l have that going for me. I guess the main purpose of my post was to see if there were any triggers that may cause more harm then good. Like, should I limit/exculde coffee or teas? Increase citrus fruits? I am just looking for way to boost my current diet to help me in this battle. Thank you both for your responses. I wish you both happy health!! Rachel

I dont have anything to post right now, but I do have a trick or two up my sleeve to make some great recipies lower calorie.
One thing I often do when making cakes or loaves, is replace the oil with apple sauce. It keeps the cake moist, but not all the fat. I have even done this with brownies. For lighter cakes, you can also omit the yolks in eggs and just use the whites. This helps make a lighter, lower cal recipie as well. I will have to dig in my book and see what I can find but maybe this will help. Good luck.

Original Post by vmcbutterfly: I love all my breads toasted pretty well. Even my pizza dough has to be really crisp as well as any tortilla's I just cant handle "soft" breads. I also eat my yogurt with fruit or cereal stirred in. In fact, I never eat cereal with milk, only when its tossed into some yogurt. I am one of these weird people who love plain rice cakes with cheese or jam on top (not weird really but I love rice cakes) When I make up my tuna filling for sandwiches, I mix an oil based salad dressing (sundried tomato or the Greek feta dressing are my faves), then I add chopped pickle, tomatoes, black olives, feta cheese, pepper and garlic salt and eat the filling on crackers.

| I dont think it will hurt your cold at all. It will probably soothe your sore throat and they are usually low in calories so I wouldnt worry about it too much. But I dont think anything in them will hurt your body. Just enjoy the coolness on your throat and get better soon! | |||

Congrats!! And I agree with wendy, talk to your doctor. If he is not alarmed about your weight gain it may be normal for your condition. But losing weight while pregnant is usually not a good idea. Good luck! |

| I dont know about working out postponing weight loss, but if you feel bloated, perhaps you are dealing with water retention. A sudden change in diet, or an upcoming menstral cycle always pack an extra 4 - 8 lbs on me. Could this be the case? I would suggest to keep doing what you are doing this week and see what happens. Good luck! | |||
| Weight Loss | now, what is starvation mode? | Feb 14 2008 22:51 (UTC) |
|
| Starvation mode is when your body is not getting the bare minimum of calories and nutrients to keep it going. When this happens, the body's natural survival mode kicks in and begins to store away calories as fat in order to prepare for when enough nutrition is not being consumed. This is why it is so important not to under cut your daily calories or have too big of a caloric deficit. The body is a survivor and will do everything it needs to do to keep alive. Hope this helps.

Princess, I can relate what you are going through as I have been on both ends of the spectrum and right now, eating enough is an issue due to current medical problems. One thing I do to help is to sip on Peppermint tea. I find it calms my tummy and decreases bloating, but it doesnt increase calorie intake. Maybe sip a cup of peppermint tea while nibbling on a muffin or sandwhich. It can calm the tummy and wash down a few calories. I dont know if this will help you, but I find the tea is good to calm a tummy regardless of the problem.
Good luck and good for you for fighting through this!! I am proud of you!!

| I am terrible for recipes, I just kind of throw things together in my crock pot. I love making chili and often I will replace the beef with ground chicken or turkey. That hleps making the chili much more healthy. I will see what other things I have/do and sit down and try to write them out in a more recpie type form, but I love my crock pot and do just about everything/anything in it. Looking forward to seeing others post! | |||

| Not sure about frozen pizza's but does Weight watchers or other "health" brands make pizza for a family? I often use the frozen pizza shells (you can get whole wheat ones but not sure what the calorie value is) then you can control the toppins. Also I sometimes make pizza's on english muffins. That way each person can make their own and they are fast to make. | |||

I havent tried them, but weight watchers has carrot cake and chocolate cake out that come in boxes of individual cakes (6 a box i think) and I know cal wise, but I think they are between 50 - 100 cals each? (guessing 100 or so). May help the craving and this way you can have one, and freeze the rest until a new craving hits. But if I really "need" cake, I love doing a lemon cake with light cream cheese or cool whip topping. And my son loves it too so he helps eating it. |

Eating is very important when working out and trying to lose weight but I do understand where you are coming from. I get that way too and am in a similar situation for very different reasons and I too worry about the consequences, but in my situation it cannot be helped. One thing I have done and try to do that will help with calories and with maintaining healthy muscle mass for work out's is protein drinks and smoothies. I buy a Vanilla flavored Whey powder that I create smoothies with (so many ways to do this) or even add to "foods" like home made fat free/sugar free puddings and jello. It helps boost your calorie and protein intake. I hate the bars and if your "drinking" it may not feel like your forcing yourself to eat. If you check out your local health food store, you can even find fruit flavored whey powders you can add to water and feels like your drinking juice. Maybe replace a bottle of water with one of these? (GNC has a good line called "koolers" and have small trial packs to help you find flavors you like). Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but it may help. Good luck

Take a close look at your calories. High fat content? Not enough lean protiens, fruits and veggies? How active are you? And how much weight have you "gained"? Also, are your clothes getting smaller? or bigger? You could be gaining muscle and not fat and there for the lbs go up but your size goes down. And for your height, that is not a bad weight I think. I am 5'10, but much older and my "ideal" weight is around 156 lbs. Let me know a little more and maybe I can help (not that I am an expert with all my dieting and research, I should be!! laughs) |

| I know how hard it is. Another suggestion is planning. I am an avid planner. The night before, plan your meals for the day including snacks and take everything into account. Plan activities if you dont have classes and dont let your self go hungry. Eat when you need to but plan it out, it mayhelp. Have a free day? Go out to expolore a book store or small shop you heard abouat. The walk will keep you busy and be great to burn off calories. Keep busy, its hard, I know, but once you get into a routine for a few days, it will be easier. Just never give up!! You are a wonderful, beautiful person and never for get that, but keeping busy and planning is a good thing. Oh and if you store junk in your house or room, clean it out and dump it! Harder to eat it if its not there!! | |||

| The work out plan sounds great, but I am worried about your caloric intake. The bare min for a woman is 1200 cals and a woman breast feeding needs more even if weaning. Look under Tools, and calorie target and i think that may help determine what you should intake. I think that 1400 or 1500 cals a day esp with the exercise is more realistic. There is another spot I think they ask about breast feeding or pregnat, but I cant remember right now. Look through the tools and diet profile section, I think you will find a lot of help. Good luck!! | |||

I know what it is like to binge. I did it most of my life and am very much an emotional eater. I deal with my feelings by stuffing my face, and its not an easy thing to stop. I do have a few suggestions, but they are not easy to follow (at least not for me when I feel my lowest, but if you try, it can help). 1. Keep a daily log of everything you eat, including your binges. Keeping track makes you aware of what you are doing and if you stop to think, it may help you stop those binges. 2. find a hobby you enjoy. Walks, knitting, reading, something that you can enjoy that will get you away from food. Its not easy, but keeping busy helps me. 3. as hard as it may be, bring friends in on this. Or come to the site and post in your journal when you feel a binge coming on. Its all about being aware of what you are doing. I am bad for it too. I am not hungry but feel "bad" so stuff myself then feel ill after wards. Its not easy to stop, but it can be done. Just take it one step at a time. Self awareness is key!! I hope this helps and good luck. If you like, use me as a support, email me any time and I will try to help as I am sure many others will too!!

| All suggestions so far are great. I love smoothies too and add yogurt and or protein powder. I also add a small tsp of no sugar sweetener and a flavoring like vanilla or almond. One of my fave smoothies is a Pina Colda - milk, protein powder, some canned or fresh pineapple and a little drop of almond extract (add a tsp of sweetener if you need it a bit sweeter). Another one I like is the Vanilla protein powder, 1/2 c skim milk, 1/2 c cold coffee and sweetener to taste and you have yourself a latte!! Just play with berries, flavors and have at it. Be creative, I love it!! | |||
