Hahahaha I was just going to say that... SIX INCHES OFF YOUR WAIST IS AMAZING!!! The scale is just a number that no one but you will know, but EVERYONE will be able to visibly see how you lost inches. I do Turbo Jam too, and while I didnt lose a lot of weight on the scale (maybe 15 pounds at first), the inches I lost was INCREDIBLE, and some people at work thought I lost 30 - 40 pounds. I told them they were all nuts, LOL. GO FOR INCHES! SCREW THE SCALE! :) |

hahah I do the same thing. My roommate keeps a ton of candy and chocolate all in her room, and when she's not around, I find myself going in and taking like, one candy or chocolate from each bag/box that has already been opened so she won't notice. It's a HORRIBLE habit. But I know that when junkfood is readily available near or around me and it's FREE, then I just have to have it. There's a vending machine right outside 10 feet away from my room but it's not free, so I take tiny things from my roommate. I haven't done it in a while, thankfully. And it's almost time to move out so it will be over for good! |

Welcome chicklette! You'll find all kinds of support in this group, it's a great place to go to if you're feeling unmotivated. Haha this week is not going so great for me, I seem to be binging every other day. I went out for sushi last night for the first time planning to eat well, then realized that it was an "all-you-can-eat" place where you order a ton of different stuff and of course I had to try everything since it was my first time. Then I came home and got depressed that my plan of sticking to my diet during my sushi experience didn't work, so I said, "EFF THIS," and ate 3 fiber one bars, 1 chocolate protein bar, 1 huge bowl of cheerios, a ton of ice cream with peanut butter (I finished the carton off), and I think 3/4 of a box of wheat thins with 6 or 7 wedges of light laughing cow cheese. Ohh, and some alcohol. FANTASTIC. I totally regretted it and went to bed with a massive stomach ache. I did well to get back on track today, I'm sticking to 1200 calories for today and I had a great workout this morning (I know the calories are low, but I feel awful about yesterday and I'm not to keen on eating my regular 1600 - 1700 cals for today). Tomorrow I may keep my calories a little on the lower side too, it I feel like I should. Hope everyone is doing well! DAY: 1 |

| Weight Loss | Why add excercise? | Apr 15 2008 00:58 (UTC) |

Many people have trouble sticking to a low low calorie limit, such as 1200 calories a day to create enough of a calorie deficit, which is why they add exercise. Burning more calories requires eating more calories. In addition, it is reccommended not to eat under your BMR caloric intake for a long period of time, since your metabolism will eventually slow down and your body may go into "starvation mode." The metabolism slows down and begins to preserve fat because the body is taking in much less calories than it needs to support the vital organs in order to create that 500 to 1000 calorie deficit. By adding exercise, you can safely eat your BMR amount of calories or higher (depending on how many calories you burn through exercise), which keeps the body healthy and keeps the metabolism from slowing down and therefore keeps the body from going into starvation mode. And like you said, exercise has the added benefit of sculpting muscles and losing inches from all different areas. I have experienced starvation mode, where I was actually working out vigorously 2 times a day, every day, and barely eating anything... maybe 1000 to 1200 calories a day. I did this for 2 months and didn't lose any weight. I didn't understand it at all. My body was holding on to the fat because I wasn't eating enough to support my body or my acitivity level. I have since upped my calories slowly to 1600 - 1700 a day and exercise for about an hour 6 days a week and I am losing weight again. Hope this helps :) Good luck! Hope this helps :) |

A little popcorn and cereal is not a big slip up at all. You can't be perfect every day, you're human. I know what you mean about starting out with a "great day." I had the same experience yesterday, except much worse than just popcorn and cereal. I woke up super early and had an AMAZING workout. I ate a healthy lunch and sat down to start studying. Before I knew it, I was dowing tablespoons of peanut butter and ice cream, bread, candy, and then I decided to have some alcohol. LOL. I probably ate between 3,000 - 4,000 calories yesterday. The first half of it was just so on track, I don't know how I even blew it. |

Good job on day 4, Kae! hahah woooooooooooooo I am binging as we speak. I'm thinking of blaming this on TOM, which is coming soon... AND I exercised vigorously today. Ugh.. OK I'm done binging now... I feel sick lol. I had my breakfast, lunch, and two snacks today, and then WHAM! I was wrist deep in the peanut butter. I HAVE TO GET RID OF THE PB. I indulged on that a little and then stopped. Then I went back for more about 4 hours later. So far my binge has consisted of: - probably 9 or 10 tablespoons of PB - maybe a cup of organic strawberry ice cream - 4.5 slices of rye bread with LIGHT margaraine (LOL) - 1 box of smarties - 1 Aero chocolate bar - 1 cup of dry Alphabets cereal
I think I probably went over 3000 calories in total today. I hope I burned close to 2,600 with my exercise, maybe more. Ohh well. START OVER TOMORROW. Hahah. |

I didn't exactly binge, but I did overeat a little on the PB about four hours ago. I still have a stomach ache! It was only about 5 or 6 tablespoons (haha *only*) but I can't believe how ridiculously bloated I've felt all day now. |

I love the biggest loser because it's very motivational and sometimes they give some great diet and fitness tips... but I just HATE IT when someone steps on the scale and gets disappointed with a 1 or 2 pound loss... I'd be jumping off the walls with that, since I lose so slowly, almost being non-existent. And I never understand how anyone could think a 12 or 15-pound drop is healthy. Who loses that much in one week or 10 days anyway?? I agree much of it has to do with dehydration. |

I'm a university as well. In first year I had a meal plan that was a buffet-style and although it claimed to include "healthy choices," there was still all that crappy stuff available like fries and pizza. The salads were boring every day. I definitely felt it to be extremely hard to follow any type of diet with the meal plan, so I didn't. For the past two years, I've been living in an apartment-style residence with a full kitchen and NO meal plan. This means I have to go get groceries every once or twoo weeks, especially to get fresh fruits and vegetables. And yes, it does get pricey, but I feel much better about it than the meal plan. If you're looking for healthy choices, try and get some frozen vegetables if you have a freezer. If you have a fridge too, you can buy apples and grapes and oranges and tomatoes and they keep much longer stored cold. Frozen chicken breasts are great too, and whole wheat pasta and rice. It's hard being a student, but good luck to you!! :) |

LOL that cereal is DEADLY for me! Actually... almost all Special K cereal (except original) are deadly in my diet... the vanilla almond one, the red berry one, the fruit and yogurt kind, the chocolate kind and even the newest "satisfaction" I LOVE THEM ALL. But I can eat the entire box without knowing it, so I only buy them every once in a while and try to eat it in moderation. You'll LOVE Special K Chocolatey Delight! I know I do... |

| Weight Loss | weight gain but inches lost?? | Apr 09 2008 15:19 (UTC) |
|
I would take inches lost over pounds lost ANY DAY. In fact, I don't own a scale so I never weigh myself, but I do take my meausrements every week. I'd rather look thinner than have some machine show me some magic number that possibly represents weight loss. Anyway, your weight probably went up because of water retention. You are working out and your muscles are probably holding onto water. Plus, you can't possibly gain 1 pound of fat in one day, and the inches lost prove that your work is paying off. Keep up the good work! :)

Do you workout at all?? Adding exercise allows you to eat a lot more, since you will be burning more. So, if you're having trouble eating more food than usual to maintain, try to incorporate an exercise routine so you don't feel as guilty about eating. I exercise for about an hour a day and I get to eat 1600 - 1700 calories a day! |

I'm turning 22 this year and in my 3rd year of university. I definitely find it hard to be super social and keep a diet and exercise plan on track of my schedule. It's so hard when all my friends want to go to the bar or order pizza or anything like that. It's almost like if you want to be social, you have to be a total pig or alcoholic. lol. I've been doing my best though, and while I have to give up a lot of of the boozing and chowing down, I treat myself every once in a while. I've lost about 10 to 15 pounds and then went into starvation mode for MONTHS. Now I'm looking to lose the last 20 pounds!! |

| Foods | grapes confuse me | Apr 09 2008 00:10 (UTC) |

I am also confused by grapes. I use fitday.com to track my diet and it logs "Grapes, raw, American type, slip skin," which amount to 60 cals per cup. Then there's, "Grapes, European type, adherent skin, raw" and these are 114 cals?! That's a huge difference in calories and I have no idea what the difference is between American and European grapes. Also, it never says anywhere on the package where they came from, it just says "RED GRAPES" or "GREEN GRAPES." So, I have no idea. Can someone help me out? |

Hahaha I am the QUEEN of taking pictures of myself, in my binkini. Well, I was anyway this winter before I went on a cruise. I became obsessed. For me, it's my love handles and my thunder thighs, mostly the inner part of them. They just sometimes look ridiculously huge and unproportionate compared to the rest of my body. I look really skinny in my upper body actually, my arms very well-defined and you can see my ribs through my skin, especially when I suck in my gut... but from my waistline down, it's a different story. I've definitely got the pear-shape going on!!! |

Yup, everyone has the right idea here. Don't dwell on your mistake, even though it's hard not to. The only thing to do is pick yourself up and get back on track. I just had an over-eating/binge experience a couple hours ago. I got myself out of my apartment to prevent me from eating more, walked to the library, and brought myself a huge bottle of water. |

Blargh... I just blew it, yet again. It's the curse of the the Tuesdays or something, I swear. Tuesday is my day off from working out and I guess this throws me off or something, and I always binge. Last Tuesday I binged, but the next six days were fantastic. I wanted to try soooo hard to make it through today. I almost did. I can find two reasons why I binged today: 1.) I trained myself really well to eat breakfast and I always eat breakfast right when I get up. I fell asleep today, and as soon as I woke up, my body/mind was telling me I wanted to eat. I always get this feeling right after a nap. 2.) Emotional Eating. When I was napping, I had one of those horrible dreams where my dad was in trouble/possibly dead and I was jerked out of my sleep right after that and felt very very sad. There was a tear running down my cheek. I guess these are logical reasons why I binged. I got up and had two cups of Kashi Fiber cereal, a whole bunch of these sugary, gummy candies (130 cals for 5 pieces, I probably had like 15 - 20), 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (95 cals/tbsp), a lindtt chocolate (80 cals for just ONE!), one Hersey kiss (25 cals for 1) and THREE Fiber One bars (140 cals/each). I think that's all. I had breakfast and lunch today, and with my binge my daily calorie count comes to a grand total of 2200 calories. I'm scared I over did it on the fiber. I hope I don't get stomach problems tonight/tomorrow. I'm kind of hoping it keeps me full and not hungry for the rest of the night so I don't eat anything else today. It's almost 6pm and I'm still completely STUFFED. Anyway, today was a sedentary day so I burn about 1850 calories on these days. I'm going to the library though and I have to walk so maybe this will help me burn at least an extra 100 - 200 calories. That would be great. Then I could count this binge more as an over-eating day since it could have been worse. It definitely felt like a binge to me, though. I want to kill this "Curse of the Tuesday Binge." Next Tuesday... I HAVE TO DO IT. Tomorrow is a new day. Here I go, to the library, to walk off some of these calories. Good luck everyone!! |

The first time I saw the weight-control oatmeal on a commercial on TV, I thought, "Ohh boy, here's another food product claiming to be all healthy when it actually has a ton of sugar and not a whole lot of nutrients." My sister was the one who bought it, otherwise I never would have tried the stuff. I was surprised to see that it had a good amount of fiber and a good amount of calories. When I tasted it, it tasted great! Definitely a thumbs up to it. I'm still an old-fashioned steel cut oats kind of girl, mainly because it keeps me so ridiculously full all morning. That was probably the only problem I had with the weight-control oatmeal, it didn't keep me as full as my steel cut oats. |

OHH MAN... Okay, so I'm sitting here trying to write an assignment due tomorrow and it's not working. All I can think about is a binge. I mean, I'm not hungry AT ALL because I just ate dinner a couple hours ago, but I'm craving stuff like crazy. Stuff that I haven't tasted in a really long time it seems. I'm finding myself day dreaming and planning out a MASSIVE BINGE. Not just a little, I mean like, going in to Pizza Pizza and ordering up a couple pizzas just for myself. Then heading over to the grocery store to get some chips, philly garlic dip, ice cream, browines and cakes, peanut butter, oeros, cookies, Hershey kisses, bars of chocolate... ALL OF MY FAVORITE FOODS. Hahah, I can actually see myself go through the store and pick out all these things and then go to the cashier and see the expression on her face while she looks at the pile of junkfood. Then I can see myself bringing all of it home, and just rotating from pizza, to chips, to cookies, to pizza, to chocolate, to ice cream, and over and over and over and over... WOW. AM I INSANE, OR WHAT? LOL I've actually thought the entire process out in my head and almost feel like I actually did it. WEIRD. LUCKILY, I have nothing of that kind of stuff here in my apartment to actually binge on, except healthy stuff and I'd rather not waste a binge on healthy stuff right now. I would rather go all out. But, I have no access to the grocery store right now or the pizza place, so I really can't go through with it if I tried. I still have my nighttime snack of an apple and PB to complete my calorie count for the day. I just wanted to share with all of you my CRAZY day dreaming experience of an extreme binge (which would probably make me puke at some point). Thank goodness it didn't happen in real life. |

This thread actually just gave me an idea for lunch tomorrow... I love pizza SO MUCH. I made my own once before like this: I have whole wheat pitas that are only 90 cals and I'll put some tomato sauce on it. Then I'll grate some cheese over it and then put whatever toppings I want on top! Tomorrow I'm going to use some chicken strips and some green and red peppers. Then stick it in the microwave oven so it gets warm and the cheese melts! I LOVE IT. YEAH HEALTHY PIZZA. |

Oh my Gosh... don't even MENTION pizza. lol. I don't know what it is, I think for me it's definitely the crust, tomato sauce and cheese... and pretty much any type of topping. LOL. That really narrowed it down. I will eat any kind of pizza no matter what toppings there are. Sometimes at night when I'm trying to sleep and I have a craving, I think about eating a huge slice of pizza and try to think about the smell, texture, and taste. Sometimes if I think about it hard enough it can kill my craving! WEIRD. |

I drink anywhere from 8 to 10 glasses of water a day or even more (constantly drinking water). Interesting about the high water content of veggies or fruits... That might be it. I think I do pretty well with my diet, getting a lot of grains in there through cereal, whole wheat bread, whole wheat crackers, brown rice and cereal bars. But lately, I may have increased my consumption of fruits and veggies, since I try to have them at every meal and as snacks as well. How many bowel movements a day is healthy? I heard 2-3 is healthy but I usually have 1 or 2. |

| Weight Loss | fattening banana argument LMAO?? | Apr 06 2008 20:58 (UTC) |

My mom used to tell me that bananas are a "bad carb" but all other fruits like apples and berries and grapes were okay. I was young and gullable so I gave up bananas because I believed my mom and wanted to lose weight. I can't remember what diet she was following, some carb-sensitive one for sure, and she said veggies like carrots, peas, potatoes, and corn were also bad carbs. These are all some of my favorite veggies and I LOVE bananas. Now I know that nothing is really bad (especially fresh fruits and veggies) as long as they are in moderation and you don't go over your calorie count. My mom has never been into calorie counting though, she has always been one of those low-carb diet fad followers. I have one banana every day, either in my cereal, in a PB-banana wrap, or in some low-fat pudding or organic ice cream. I WILL NEVER GIVE UP MY BANANAS! lol. |

You do have a serious eating disorder if you feel like you are overweight at 93 pounds. This is underweight. And at 600 calories a day, your body and metabolism will eventually shut down on such little food if you continue this way. You are starving yourself. No female should go under 1200 calories a day to support the body and the organs and for growing teenagers, it should be significantly higher. I suggest you talk to someone, anyone: a doctor, a parent, a family member, a friend, a teacher, anyone who can help you get on the right track and starting eating right again. Please get yourself some help. Your health is very important. |
