I haven't tried all of the Larabar flavors, but the ones that I keep leaning toward are Ginger Snap and Key Lime and Lemon. I also rather enjoyed the Cocoa Mole one. Many of the others are a bit cloying, or not appetizing/unique enough for my tastes. As far as Jocalat goes, I've tried a variety of them but my favorites are the regular chocolate Jocalat and the Chocolate Coffee. The Chocolate Mint one was good, but not awesome, and the orange one was way too orange-oil-y. It resembled a bitter rind. I wasn't too impressed with the hazelnut one, either, or the chocolate cherry (blasphemy, coming from me, the chocolate-cherry fiend!). If you like mellower, less sickening flavors, I'd suggest the chocolate coffee one. The coffee balances out the sweetness and still tastes like a dessert. The plain chocolate one is quite dark as well, like a very rich, lightly-sweetened brownie. NOM. Good luck! You have a tough decision on your hands. xD |

Ooh, let me know how your experience with the hemp ice cream goes. ^_^ My boyfriend was teasing me as I was eating it, saying it was just gonna make me hungrier (heh, munchie humor and all that). Just a fair warning, maybe my freezer is set too cold, but it's a sonuvagun to get out of the carton. I actually had to nuke it for about ten seconds at half power just to get my scoop in there. o.O Other than that, though: mouthgasm! I've had it the past three days in a row and I'm doing my best to ration it. -twitch- Must...resist... Once my period starts, I'll be fine. It's the PMS that's killer. Oooh, speaking of truffles! My fella was given a couple of pounds of these gourmet French truffles for Christmas, and while we were cleaning his office this weekend, he found a bag hiding in some files. OMG. He was going to toss them! Sacrilege! Those babies came home with me. >D There's now a pound of dark choccy truffles beckoning to me from the pantry. Oi vey...at least it's just water weight, right? x) |

1. favorite leafy green Probably just spinach, since it purees so nicely into my green smoothies. 2. favorite veggie meat product I can't eat soy. =( 3. favorite veggie breakfast food Oat bran with all the fixins: bananas, blueberries, pepitas, and a liberal drizzle of coconut milk. 4. favorite veggie appetizer Crusty bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. 5. favorite way to have tofu Again, no-go on the soy. 6. favorite beans? Black eyed peas. 7. milk preference Coconut milk. Nom! Or, just plain almond mik. 8. favorite veggie recipe PB & banana sammidges. <3 9. have you ever had meat? Yep, but I've been veggie about 14 months now. 10. do you occasionally eat meat? Nope. 11. if you were a prior meat eater, what food would make you most likely to go back...not saying you ever would actually do it, so i guess your favorite meat. No meat, but I'm sorely tempted by marshmallows. 12. does your romantic partner [if applicable] meat? if so does it make it hard Yes, and the only difficulty I have is prepping it for him. Touching meat -- even cooked -- makes me slightly ill. He's a very respectful, encouraging even, about my eats though and will taste whatever I'm eating when proffered (even if just to humor me). =) Thanks, Chrissy, for the survey! =) |

So I trekked out to the co-op today and found the Coconut Bliss! However, they didn't have any of the flavors I was pining for, and so I chickened out. xD Yes, I chickened out. How the heck does someone chicken out from an ice cream purchase, I do not know, but that was me: the chicken. Gah! I did find a couple other things though, and I admit, the price is what sucked me in. I tried a different rice cream -- Good Karma brand -- and it promised a taste of coconut and mango. Bleh. Basically resembled pancake batter. o.O Not awful, better than the other gunk I bought, but not worth it. HOWEVER, the star of the show was the hemp cream I got! Yeah, hemp milk non-dairy awesomeness! It was coffee biscotti flavored and actually had little cookie bits in it! I'm thrilled, and it had fantastic stats (140 calories for 75g). The texture was spot-on, and it was delish. I highly recommend it. I think it was called Tempt or something. Aieee! -happy satisfied-craving dance- Yeah, I'm kinda a Lindt junkie, and I've even turned my fella into a choccy snob. He'll reach for a Lindt milk before a Hershey's nowadays. xD Their 85% dark is just the stuff when I have a craving for pure, unadulterated chocolate taste. Eh, it's our periods. Indulgences like this are exactly that, and therefore have no calories. Fact. -nods- I think that, if doctors were smart, they'd just write a Rx for it when our cycles rolled around. "Moody, irritable, and crampy? Here, here's a 'script for some dark chocolate and ice cream. Your insurance should cover it." >D Hehe. Angel_26, thanks for the suggestion. I truly love bananas (I go though a dozen or more a week, no exaggeration, by myself) but it's just not the same. However, I might just take you up your suggestion and make some banana soft serve, then hard-freeze it and pack it into a cone. Thanks for your input! ^_^

According to the Coconut Bliss website, our local natural food store has it. I must've just glanced right over it. Yay, I'm hopeful! XD The chocolate-peanut-butter flavor, as well as the cherry amaretto, seems downright decadent. I may have to take a drive down tomorrow to check it out. >D I ate another scoop of the Rice Dream tonight, and again, it disappointed. Blech. T.T Heh, what candy bar did you buy? Mine was this 70% dark Lindt bar with a mousse filling and cherry-chili /goo/ in it. Z0mg. O.O SO worth it! I don't even really care for chocolate, but I have a chocolate-cherry fetish, and I only crave chocolate during my cycle, and yeah. I was helpless to resist its five-dollar siren song. Ellabella89, you have piqued my interest! Do you have a recipe? Thanks! |

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. The frozen fruit idea is a good one (especially for when I'm wanting a cold snack), but when I'm craving ice cream, I want ice cream. xD My brain is stubborn like that. I haven't seen any Italian Ices at the grocery store, but I'll keep a lookout. I can't find any sorbets at my usual grocer, either! The closest I've found is sherbet, and the first or second ingredient is always skimmed milk. How frustrating! We have a couple of health food stores out here, though, and that's where I found the Rice Dream. I'll take another peek soon, though. I know they had the coconut milk ice cream, but I balked at the price. I used to buy the So Delicious soy creams and /loved/ the taste, and I think it's the same company (Turtle Mountain?) that makes the coconut milk ice cream that I spotted yesterday. I'm not sure if I saw Coconut Bliss there, but I'm going to check their website like you suggested. However, if it's as good as you say it is, I'm definitely willing to fork over the money for it. It's not like I buy ice cream that often, so it's a splurge and a treat. (Yeah, just don't ask me about the 5$ chocolate bar I bought last night -- priorities, right? ^^;;) Thanks again for the insight and suggestions. If anyone else has any input, I'd be happy to hear it. =)

| Vegetarian | almond milk drinkers...quick question | Jul 16 2009 02:22 (UTC) |

It sometimes takes me a week and a half or more to go through a carton of almond milk, and I've never noticed any ill-effects. I don't drink from the bottle, either (not implying that you are, heh), which I think helps curb the proliferation of bad bacteria. I guess it boils down to what you think is best for you. Mine always seems to pass the 'smell' test in the period in which I use it, and it hasn't curdled or gone funky on me. As for veggie slices, I can't eat soy, so I'm not too sure on that one. Before I gave up soy, though, I used some ground, refrigerated veggie sausage several weeks after opening it and didn't get sick. Hope that helps! =) |

| Foods | How much fiber do you eat per day? | Jul 14 2009 07:09 (UTC) |
29 |
Looking over my averages, it looks like I get around 45ish grams a day. o.O I really had no idea I was such a fiber junkie. I don't actively /try/ to get that much fiber, but it seems like all my favorite foods are high fiber (tons of fruits, veggies, oat bran, whole grain sprouted bread, etc). It's actually kinda funny, but "added" fiber makes me sick (like when a company adds chicory root or something to boost the fiber content) but I evidently have no trouble consuming naturally occurring fiber in my common eats. xD K-loo, the amount of fiber you eat is impressive! How do you manage to achieve that, if you don't mind my asking? |

| Weight Loss | Anyone else have a gnawing, empty feeling a hour or so after eating fruit? | Jul 09 2009 18:57 (UTC) |

I love apples, but I've had to stop eating them for this very reason. I get that very same gnawing, empty, COLD feeling after eating them and it is almost painful. Bananas, however, do not do that to me, but many fruits do. Pears, for instance, leave me ravenous. Grapes do, too. Sigh. =/ |

Just so you know, I'm at a healthy weight and quite slim, but I can't fit into anything smaller than a 13 junior's and probably an 8 or a 10 in women's jeans (unless it's horribly vanity sized). I have 39-40" hips, though. It's just how I'm built. It makes jeans shopping a real pain, but I personally love my curves. |

| Foods | Grilled cheese sandwich? | Jul 08 2009 05:28 (UTC) |

I had grilled cheese for dinner tonight. It was brilliant. Bloody delish. I smeared horseradish on two slices of sprouted grain bread, slapped a quarter cup of cooked egg white in there (I nuke it in a saucer), layered up onion, red peppers, and tomato, and finally put a piece of muenster atop of all of that. I preheated my Foreman grill, pam'd it up, and grilled my sandwich for a couple minutes and it was fantastic. The horseradish *makes* the sandwich. It's also awesome without the pepper and onion, but I was short on veggies today and was trying to sneak in as many as possible. xD |

Original Post by santonacci: Unfortunately, I can't answer that, because so often crime goes unreported. You are correct that these statistics represent only the parallels between reported incidents rather than ALL instances of abuse. The link I had posted previously only includes fatalities, as well. I have found some other links that involves abuse that did not result in death of the child. http://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/statsinfo/ni s3.cfm A summary of the findings noted above can be found here: http://www.findcounseling.com/journal/child-a buse/abusers.html, but the basic gist of it is that 65% of the abused children were abused by females, and of children being abused by birth parents, 75% of the abuse was by mothers. Amongst all reported cases, however, only 50% of the abuse was caused by mothers (indicating that mothers are as equally likely to be abusive as fathers). 60% of reports of physical (versus emotional, and neglect) abuse was also committed by mothers. Again, these are only for reported cases. According to the NSPCC, 49% of all reported cases of abuse was by the mother. Summary can be found here: http://www.nspcc.org.uk/inform/resourcesforpr ofessionals/statistics/keycpstats/5_wda48743. html, and the full report that supported these findings can be found here: http://www.nspcc.org.uk/Inform/publications/D ownloads/childmaltreatmentintheUKexecsummary_ wdf48006.pdf. And finally, this link offers evidence that mothers are more likely than fathers to be involved in child maltreatment:http://center.americanvalues.org/?p=70.

In regards to the maternal bond hypothesis, these statistics may be informative:
http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm04/ figure4_2.htm
I would also hypothesize, therefore, that a man willing to harm his own child is, anthropologically and biologically speaking, unusual. |

Yep, it's pretty much peanut flour. I purchased a huge 5-pound bag of it from a company called Byrd Mill, and it was quite reasonably priced compared to buying the PB2 -- and the peanut flour I bought had no added salt or sugar, so I could sweeten it to taste. I love the stuff. ^_^ |

The nutritional information lists chicory root, which always wreaks havoc on my belly. Perhaps that's the same issue with your tummy? I also can't eat Fiber One bars, or anything else artifically augmented with added fiber. Bleh. I hate my sensitive stomach. xD Maybe you can just buy a tub of quick oats and pick up some maple syrup and cinnamon? Good luck! ^_^ |

I guess I'm a little confused by your question. Is it like, John Doe, MD, or is it like, John Doe, drop a few lines and there's more letters? I've never seen a patient's initials on a doctor's letter before. Usually it starts out on the very top, with some sort of note, like, Re: John Doe. If it's /immediately/ after the doctor's name, that's his "title" -- like, if he signed it John Doe, OD, then he's letting you know he's an optometrist. Let me know if I understood your question and properly explained it, or if I'm terribly confused as well. ^^; |

I had the most brilliantly awful s'more today that clocked in at about 450 calories. It consisted of two large chocolate graham crackers, several heaping tablespoons of marshmallow fluff, and three blocks from a chocolate caramel bar. I wrapped it in foil and broiled it for about five minutes, until it was melty and the graham cracker was soft. It was bliss. Ambrosia. Oh my gosh. No regrets. None. Was it nutritionally void? Heck yes, but it the taste and how it made me feel was so worth it. =) If I ever have that many calories to play with again, I'd eat it again in a heartbeat. |

Thank you for sharing that idea! I went out on Saturday for Chinese food, and had leftover crepes from my meal and was about to pitch them when I read your post. I pretty much did what you did, but broke up a chocolate bar instead. I folded it and Pam'd it, and baked it at 350F for 10 minutes (didn't bother to turn them, though) and they turned out lovely and remarkably low calorie. I estimate mine to be around 150 calories, which includes a half a banana and a dark chocolate square, and a generous squirt of whipped cream. Again, thanks! ^^ |

I had a wonderful salad tonight, and I'm not even much of a salad-eater. I first froze 4oz of tofu, and last night when I transferred it to the fridge to thaw, I put about two tablespoons of light Italian dressing in its baggie. Tonight, I drained the marinade in a pan and added enough water to cook about 1/4 cup of tri-color couscous (easy grain to make; add boiling water and fluff!) and in another pan, I seared the tofu. When it was cooked, I added about an ounce each of onion and tomato, and cooked until soft. THEN, I added about another tablespoon of light Italian dressing to that with enough water to make it sauce-y (like a vinaigrette). On my plate, I put a heaping serving of baby greens, dumped the couscous atop that, then poured the tofu-veggie mix atop that with the dressing remnants from the pan. I then sprinkled it with about a tablespoon of Parmesan. Oh my. It was...yes. I hope you try it and enjoy it. =) (Note: I'm sure you could use chicken in place of the tofu, but I don't think it's safe to reuse the marinade to cook the couscous. Just use a small splash of Italian in the water you boil your couscous in.) |

I add blackstrap molasses to my morning porridge, and that helps. A tablespoon of it has about 20% of your daily iron. Alas, I have iron issues, too -- I'm so tired of being told that I can't donate blood. I've also started having iron-fortified breakfast cereals, too, and I recently discovered that just a tablespoon of cumin adds 23% of my daily iron. Seeing as I love me some hummus, I go heavy-handed on the cumin. x) I hope this helps. ^^ |

I'm in love with something called San Sucre mousses, and when made with water, they're only about 50-60 calories per half cup. It's basically a dry powder mix that you add milk (or water, or soy milk, or almond milk -- whatever suits your fancy) then whip it for a good five minutes. It really does turn out "mousse"-y. Have you ever had something called Dream Whip? It's just like Cool Whip, but it's dry and you add the wet ingredients and beat it until it's fluffy. I think it's the same concept. ^^ |

I had a very delicious dessert that involved peanut butter. Yum, just logged on to log it and I shall share the recipe with you. =) 1/2 a banana, sliced down the middle length-wise 1tbs peanut butter 1 block of chocolate (or a couple of tbs choccy chips) Preheat the oven to 400F. Place a square of aluminum foil onto a small baking pan, and put your banana on the foil. Smear peanut butter over it, and sprinkle with choccy. Seal foil packet and bake about fifteen minutes, or until gooey. I served mine with a scoop of (soy) ice cream and a cinnamon-ginger cookie, and a couple of crushed meringues on it. ^_^ For just the banana, peanut butter, and choccy (using 55g banana, 14g peanut butter, and 10g of choccy) it came out to about 180cal. It was...wow. x) |
