Foods three foods you hate? Aug 30 2008

Mustard and Pickles.  I am the least picky person I know (at least I was until I stopped eating pig and cow...) and these are the only two things I can't stand.

If you bring interesting foods then maybe someone will ask to try them and you can start a conversation that way?  You should try to look at this with optimism.  You have nothing holding you back.  You get to be whoever you want, nobody's opinion has already been made about you!  Act confident and special and people will believe the same.  Stay true to yourself.  Use this as an oppourtunity to learn who you really are.  You and God and your family are what will remain constant and real in your life right now because you can be postitive about what these people think about you.  You are you and YOU ARE AMAZING!  Know this.  Things can change easily so even if the first week or month doesn't go as well as you want, that doesn't mean the rest of high school will suck too.  It is totally okay to be scared.  Hell, I'm usually nervous just going to parties where I'll know only one person, and if you feel like you might throw up and can't sleep the night before your first day that's totally normal.  Life will be just peachy.  Give your worries to God and you will be a-ok.  Hope everything goes fine for you!

Apparently if you sleep too LONG you can wake up feeling more tired.  For a week try getting only 7-8 hours of sleep a night and see if you feel more rested.  I know it probably sounds like the opposite of what you should do, but I think that this is what researchers have found.  Google it and see what you come up with.  Also, right before you wake up do you seem to have weird dreams?  Apparently that is your body telling you it is time to wake up...  Crazy, huh?

Vegetarian Flexitarian?? Aug 17 2008

On wikipedia "flexitarian" is basically the catch-all word for people who choose to not eat some meats and eat others or who have their own special set of rules.  I eat fish and poultry and call myself a flexitarian but that's only when I must explain it to other people.  I just eat what I want.  Pure vegetarians probably do find this "marketing friendly" and that's so true.  I don't think I'm a vegetarian, it's just complicated to explain.  No flexitarians have the exact same set of rules probably, because they are flexible.

Vegetarian Why are you Vegetarian or Vegan? Aug 17 2008

I'm what is technically called a "flexitarian"

This basically means I have my own set of rules which are somewhat vegetarian.  I eat poultry and seafood.  People have asked me why I eat poultry but not red meat and I don't really have a good answer except for that pigs and cows are way closer to being human.  The fact that they are mammals and super-smart animals makes me view them not as meat.  When I see ground hamburger I see a cow, not a yummy cheeseburger.  This flexible way of being a vegetarian is ideal for me because I don't have to worry about not getting the correct blend of proteins and such since I do get some animal proteins.  Also cows raised to provide humans with meat and cheese and milk produce a TON of the methane that is released into the atmosphere and they use up so much energy.  Red meat is not an energy-efficient or environmentally friendly food.

6 grams of sugar is not a lot.  With the good fiber and protein you get from the kashi bars (LOVE THEM!) without all the crazy calories, the 6 grams of sugar is a balanced enough.  In most bars like this there is a LOT more sugar.  Eat up that KASHI!  Laughing

I used to work in a smoothie place in a mall.  One quite memorable customer came up to me and asked if the smoothies were high in fat.  I said no, but that they were kind of high in calories.  She said, "Aren't calories fat?"  SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT CALORIES EVEN WERE!  I had to explain that they're the energy in your food that your body uses to run itself.  She seemed dumbfounded.  She was mid-twenties and I am 16.  I think she was a little embarassed as she well should be.  OMG!

jolie_fille-way to look towards the future and not back at the past.  You've set a lofty goal and I'm sure you can reach it.  Keep working hard!

alexwilliams-I would say a binge is in the way you look at it.  If you're not upset with yourself for going over your goal because you know you worked it off (which I totally agree you did), then it wasn't a binge.  The way you talk about it seems like you had it under your control and that's another reason I agree you shouldn't count it as a binge.

Today is Day 8 for me, but my problem is that even though I haven't binged hard-core, I eat over my daily goal.  This is just going to keep me fat.  I can treat myself once in a while, but it feels like I'm becoming complacent and going over my goal every single day.  I must change my mentality.

Good luck everyone with this holiday weekend, and remember the reason we celebrate on Sunday!

Thursday is always a high calorie day for me.  Not because I plan it that way but because on Thursdays we have hot lunch at school (pizza, subs, chicken sandwich, etc.) and I tutor at my church so we have lots of variety and tons of good yummy hot stuff (last week it was meatloaf, coleslaw, potatoes, grapes, you can see how I went a little overboard (1000 calorie dinner does not equal a little...) and this week it was pasta with breadsticks and salad, and there's always DESSERT).  Since I went so overboard last week I decided to try something different today and make sure that I wasn't ever really hungry, especially around dinner, because last week, even when I got full to the point of pain, I still had an unbelievable urge to gobble up everything in sight.  So this week I made sure to eat at 8:00 (my usual breakfast time), 9:30 (my usual snack time), 11:30 (my pre-lunch), 12:00 (lunch), and a big snack at 3:00 to stem off uncontrollable hunger urges.  It definently worked.  I could control myself better at dinner and although I ate too much chocolate pudding and a little too much pasta, I didn't go wacko overboard.  This is my brand new plan.  If I could control not going crazy for dinner and still being full now (8:17) so I don't feel the urge to snack, my plan for next Thursday is to even stay around 1400-my daily goal.  This is my new plan for all days because I always feel super-hungry right before dinner.  Since I eat what my parents are eating I think that I have to save lots of calorie room for dinner, but then I end up snacking before and after because I'm not maintaining my hunger level, I'm letting it teter-totter up and down.  If I'm not uber hungry for dinner, I won't eat way too much and need to save the calorie room!  This is my lightbulb moment.  Hopefully this works out and my bulb doesn't burn out.  Does this sound smart to anyone else?

Today:

Breakfast -Meijer brand Special K (Essential M), it tastes better than Special K.

Snack -Pea Pods

Snack -Nectarine

Lunch -2 slices Hungry Howies Pizza

Snack -2 slices Wasa Crispbread with 1 Laughing Cow cheese wedge

Dinner -1.5 servings pasta with marinara sauce, one breadstick with no butter, 2 servings salad with 2 tablespoons french dressing, 4 meatballs, and chocolate pudding

The day will end up being about 1700 calories.  Not TOO bad.

Daily Goal: 1400

Daily Burn: 1890 w/ no excersize

DAY 6!!!

Unfortunently I feel extremely hungry today.

Hopefully this all works out.

Which reminds me I'm going to go work out to try and negate whatever happens tonight and to get my mind off of food.

Update: I just wanted to eat and eat all different sorts of things, so I did, but I didn't eat very much of any one thing and it probably only ended up being about 200 calories and I had 100 to spare.  I also did bench aerobics so all in all I consider this a successful binge-free day.  Although I'm not happy with my noshing, I'm not beating myself up about it.

Those super-delicious tortilla strips from Costco made with mediterannean sea salt.  9 Chips=140 Calories.  Not worth it.  So impossible to only eat 9.  And you need them with salsa.  Whenever my parents buy them I eat them.  ARG!

Cookies.  If they're in my house, I'll eat them.  At least 4 of them.  The weird thing though is that I only eat them the first day they're in my house.  We had vanilla oreos and I ate 9 in one day (450 calories), haven't had any since and they're still in my house.  We had homemade cookies, I ate 4 in one day and then only one the next, it was easier to control.  We had chocolate oatmeal cookies, ate 4 the first day, none since.

Also chocolate and pretzels.  We have a bag of milk chocolate chips in my house and a bag of pretzels.  I will get out both bags and take some of both.  The sweet to salty ratio never gets right and so I will keep eating more of each in an attempt to achieve the right ratio.  Yes.  Definite bad idea.  Yes.  I should measure out one serving of each.  Yes.  I should throw these foods away.  Yes.  They are both not filling enough for their calories.  But boy oh boy is it good.

If you're excersizing too close to beddy-bye time then your heart rate will keep going and that could prevent you from falling asleep.  If your mind is constantly keeping awake thinking about what you're going to eat or do tomorrow, right before you turn out the light write down your food and other schedule plans for tomorrow.  That way your mind will turn off better.

You seem like you want us to convince you that it's wrong and that you should skip work.  Because of this I'm led to believe that it does make you feel that awful and that you really hate it.  Here is what I would recommend.  First off, what time of the day is it at?  If it's around lunchtime, go out for lunch.  If it's there the whole day then think about how gross it is getting sitting out there with so many people picking at the frosting.  Choose one.  Either ice cream OR cake and allow yourself to eat it; this way the rest of the day you won't just be thinking about it all the time.  If you really feel like you can't control yourself.  Schedule a doctor's appointment or tell your boss you have a doctor's appointment and go out and take a walk.  This way you won't be around it.

I had 3 cookies today, but it was within my calorie goals and I knew that going in.  I didn't say I'm not gonna eat these, I said I will eat these but only because I can because I jogged today and it will still keep me under 1400 because I ate well today.  This is okay.  So days without bingeing: 1 and I'm proud of it.

I feel as if I binge every day.  I plan out all the healthy stuff I'm going to eat during the day, and so I eat that, and then some.  Whatever I feel like eating.  Pretzels and Chocolate a lot.  My dinner always feels like bingeing too because I eat MORE than what I really want to.  The beginning of the dinner I'm like, "I'm only gonna eat this portion plus a salad" and by the end of the meal I've had twice that portion plus the salad.  I always want to eat dinner that my parents are eating because dinner is the only time we have to eat together but it always ends up being higher-calorie food.  I'm so mediocre at this being healthy and losing weight thing.  Make that bad.  Yes I am bad at this and I don't know how to be good.  Yesterday I ate 4 cookies.  Today I had 1000 calories for dinner.  1 big slice of meatloaf, potatoes, green beans, grapes, a crunch ice cream bar, and coleslaw.  It hurt my stomach I ate so much.  I need to learn how to help myself.  My motto is "Don't become complacent." but I'm AWFUL at it.  Cry

It's hard to find the balance of enjoying yourself while being healthy, but what I would recommend is eating really healthy for 2 meals and all of your snacks except for one and then eat whatever you want for the third meal and snack but really watch your portion sizes.  That way you'll still feel and be healthy while being able to enjoy your vacation and have fun.  Good luck!

Young Calorie Counters Super frustrated... calories for teens? Mar 05 2008

I figure eat healthy foods and if 1400 feels fine and good to you that's probably a good idea.  Even if it's less than you're "supposed" to have, I don't think it's that bad.  Everyone is different and these generalizations just make everything difficult.  SO MANY teens eat all crap all day or eat basically nothing and they aren't doing all that bad.  I know you want it to end up right and know what kind of deficit you're getting and everything. but it's hard.  I'd stick to 1400.

it looks pretty healthy, but if I ate like this I would end up cheating every day with chips or chocolate or something because I would be craving that crunch and good flavor.  I would recommend adding turkey or something "protein-y" to your lunch salad, maybe some croutons for extra flavor and yumminess, maybe some dry yummy cereal or a granola bar or something.  Don't worry about the extra calories, it won't be that many and you'll be happier with extra yumminess.  I tend to overeat on weekends too, but if I'm busy and having fun with friends without food around, I tend to eat less than on the weekends.  I would recommend the meals you can plan (i.e. breakfast and lunch without plans, etc.) do and plan them SUPER healthy and I would recommend telling yourself you won't eat after 9 o'clock.  You won't actually be hungry if you've eaten enough during the day and then you won't eat just because the food is in front of you and tempting you.

The zig-zag method works for some people but for me it is a copout.  If I eat badly I'm like this is my high calorie but the next day it's the same and I'm like it's okay because my body is working harder today.  I simply end up gaining weight.  Just a warning.  Check out the other threads about this though, they're helpful.  You just have to plan it all out correctly.
