Fitness Wii Fit for exercise? May 12 2009

Forgot to say, as with any exercise program or piece of equipment, it is only as good as you use it. I can say I have gym membership and people will clap, but I don't use it so whats the point? Wii fit will only work as well as you use it and the effort you put in. If you work hard at it, and encourage yourself to do that bit more every day, it will work. If you hula hoop for two mins and slide it away, it won't!

Well I have been using my wii fit for over a year now and I still use it more or less every single day. I got my wii fit last April here and have lost about 60lbs since starting it. I started weight loss in January 2008 and from January to April I lost about 10lbs, got my wii fit and the weight dropped off me. I was totally sedentry and had no confidence to go to a gym, so the wii fit seemed perfect for me.

Now I do 20 mins step areobics, but use 3lb weights for each arm, I then do 10 mins of hula hoops, 15 mins of muscle workouts and 15 mins of yoga every morning and I have also toned up lovely.

Thanks to wii fit, I now play badminton, I bought a bike and go cycling regular and I enjoy walking. It has certainly been a great gateway for me. I don't think I have ever been so fit, and have never been as slim as this in my adult life.

I had tried lots of "diets" before, joined gyms, took up swimming and always got bored and gained back more than I lost in a short space of time. The wii fit has tracked my progress and kept me interested. I love it. I have never had any problems with it what so ever. At the end of the month, EA sports active comes out and I am getting one!!

Weight Loss When in flippity %@*# did a BMI under 20 become considered underweight?? Nov 10 2008

Original Post by allnaturalgirl02:

While CC uses the BMI cutoff of 20 for underweight, the majority of doctors, health organizations in the US use 18.5. I'm sorry but when you say "because we WANT to be the fattest nation around" how is that really fair to say? yeah, all Americans except you are just stuffing their pieholes hoping and praying to go down in history as the fattest nation ever?

I think the people on this site who wear a size 6 will probably disagree with you that they are "obviously overweight." I wish you could hear the tone of this post to know how offensive you're being.

I sooooooo agree with you. A BMI of 24.9 is considered "normal" That is not fat or over weight. It does not matter what a BMI reading says, everyone will have their own healthy BMI. If you are active and fit, your BMI may well fall into the over weight catagory, and if what the OP is saying is correct, that would be obese to them! That is offensive. I have been recomended that my ideal BMI is 22. That is far too low for me. I have never had a BMI of 22. I am currently working towards BMI of 23. My BMI is under 25, so I am not "fat"

To me BMI of 20 would seem very thin to me. My husband has a BMI of 22. He is 6ft tall and weighs 154lbs and people call him skinny!!

Yes I do!!! I love my wii fit. Wii fit has been out since April here (uk). Today marked 200 days of me using it. I have lost about 50lbs since then :O . I don't care what anyone says, Wii fit DEFINATELY plays a part towards fitness. I do a minimum of 30 mins a day on it. The past few weeks I have upped it to an hour most days doing a combination of muscle exercises, yoga, free steps (which I now use weights with to work my arms and increase the areobic benefit) and hulahoops. My legs, tum and bum are getting very well toned now, I have muscles!!. Just need to lose a little more on my arms, inner thighs, and tiny bit on my tum. I have gone through obese to over weight to having a normal BMI. I am just losing those few pounds now to get me well under a BMI of 25. I am aiming for BMI of 23. (currently at 24.3)

Wii fit has enabled me to get back into exercise. I now do more exercise in addition out of the house. I either walk for an hour, bike ride for an hour, or play badminton for an hour every single day. I feel great.

If anyone has anything negative to say about Wii fit. I invite anyone to see the results. This is me 2 years ago

Wii fit has given me exactly what I needed to get fit and enjoy other exercise. I would recommend it to ANYONE.

And, the telling off you get isn't that bad! It only asks if you were busy the day before!! TSK!!

Weight Loss The real story - Fad Diets! Nov 03 2008

I could not agree more. I have done faddy diets and pills in the past and I have failed. Slimfast was one of the worst, followed by this other one where I had to take pills and drink shakes. Slimfast leaves you needing to actually eat something, in fact anything. So whilst in the short term slimfast has one benefit that lasts not more than a week or two, and that is losing about 3lbs fair enough, BUT you will gain that and some once you just HAVE to eat something and you don't stop!

The other bad one I thought was a good idea at the time left me feeling very sick and depressed. The ONLY way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise, and plenty of it.

This is a great motivational thread!! For me it is smaller clothes and more choice of what I can wear, compliments, feeling much more confident, to be able to run around with the children, loving exercise, enjoying my food, to appreiciate treat foods for what they are.....TREATS not staple diet! I can feel my bones and muscles I didn't know I had, and my tummy is almost flat without 4 spare tyres! My favorate thing is knowing if I have to see the doctor or nurse, they are not going to tell me my problem is weight related or even if it's NOT weight related, them telling me I need to lose weight. To be able to look in a mirror and like what I see. To be able to feel worthy of spoiling myself with a good haircut or clothes. I am going to buy my first bikini for next summer! To feel alive and energetic. To feel confident in letting my husband see me in the noddy and not to cringe when he hugs me. So lots of things there, just off the top of my head!

Have plenty of salad and fruit in the house! A nice fresh fruit salad with low fat or fat free bio yogurt is delicious and filling low fat/calorie snack and helps to curb those sugar craves. Also mixed salad with some turkey breast or lean ham is another low fat meal. You don't have to skimp on the salad because there is barely anything in it! If you want to bulk it out a bit, get some mini baby new potato's, just 3 or 4 of those is only about 60cals. Preperation is the key. Having plenty of fresh fruit and salad in the house helps. It does not take long to whip up a real healthy treat.

Motivation MOLLY'S DIET RANTS! (ranting, raving, motivating & more) Oct 25 2008

Right! I have a rant as well!! Why is it that when I was obese, I lost 15lbs compliments, lost 30lbs compliments, lost 45lbs compliments, 60lbs and now the negative comments have started? My BMI is 25.1 now. So still a little over weight. Most people say "If you lose much more you will disapear down a plug hole" or "Are you sure you need to lose more?" or "I am not talking to you anymore, hmphh I need to lose weight" Or the worst from people who where always skinnier than me, who seem a little preturbed at my rapidly toning figure "you may be slimmer than me, but you are short" Undecided

When I was obese, I never got comments one way or another about my appearance. Since I have lost a ton of weight, all of a sudden I seem to be part of the catty club. More and more woman are letting me into their vain secrets and catty natures making comments about other overweight woman!! I am not sure if I like it!!! Am I alone in this?

Laughing So funny. Just wanted to let you know, that back in the summer I went to France for a week. I walked and walked over that week and kept busy but no other exercise or gym. My diet that week was really poor, because I didn't know what I was ordering! So we ended up in the healthy eaters biggest sin bin..macdonalds! Traditional breakfasts in France are high in fat, so are their baggettes and icecream whoops, but yummy. When I came back I fully expected to have gained 3lbs at least. To my surprise I had actually lost 1lb!! All that fresh air and walking did it!! Go and have fun. We all need that once in a while!!

Health & Support trying to recover from bulimia - support/partner Oct 25 2008

Hi there. I just wanted to introduce myself. I have Bulimia. The reason I don't say recovered from, is because I have had therapy and I have learnt that Bulimia is always there whether it is has control over you or not. At the moment it does not have control over me, but occassionally I battle against the "demons" but I am winning. You can to, but being really honest, you need that support and therapy.

Bulimia was not something I could fix on my own. Having a therapist helped me make sense of the thoughts and feelings I was having, and helped me to repair the unhealthy relationship I had with food. He also gave me strategies to help me over come the strong urges to binge and purge. He also helped me to understand the emotional link that goes hand in hand with it.

The first step is the hardest and that is telling people around you that you have this so you can get support from them as well. Part of Bulimia is thinking you cannot tell anyone. The guilt and shame of it all makes it incredibly difficult to tell someone. BUT you have nothing to feel guilty or ashamed of. Bulimia affects so many people. It is very common. The first step to beating it is ignoring the thoughts that prevent you from telling your parents and just blurt it out, write a letter if it helps explain things better. Or show them this thread of yours. Be prepared for an overwhelming emotional time, because the first time you tell someone you love, you will probably cry buckets and have feelings of relief, fear, sadness, worry etc. It is so up and down but it is worth it as it is the biggest step on the road to recovery you can take.

You can beat this and come out the other side. Some of those thoughts and feelings do stay, but it is how you handle it that is the difference between being in control of it or not. My therapist gave me permission to have a bad day and taught me actually it's ok to have a bad day and deal with it in other ways than binging and purging. I have suffered Bulimia on and off for about 15 years. Once I started seeing a therapist I got control over it in a matter of weeks. You can to, just seek that help and speak to your loved ones. Smile

I like this thread as well. In my life it is my husband. He has been sooooo supportive. We have been married 15 years and I have always yo-yo'ed. He has never thought any worse of me no matter what. Since I started this lifestyle, it has not been easy for me. My confidence and self esteem was rock bottom in the beginning. I have always found it difficult to join exercise classes or gym as I am not really a social gal. So my husband, despite the fact he is 6ft tall with a BMI of 22, has committed to help me. We go on long bike rides together and we play badminton regular. He always compliments me, and he is always loving towards me. I get gentle encouragement from him all the time. He even eats the more healthy food along with me (but has his seperate treats) I couldn't do it without him.

The other's are my children!! They don't really know it, but this summer I was able to run about with them and had so much fun!! That in itself was worth a lot. My eldest son is 14 and he has been really sweet. He compliments me quite a lot which is nice!

Weight Loss I'm tired of the ignorant comments Oct 07 2008

I have had this happen to me as well. A friend of mine who is very over weight said to me "You know what, since you lost weight, I can see more wrinkles on you, I think I would rather stay over weight than look old"

I think sometimes people say things out of their own insecurity. I have even had people telling me to stop now before I get a hollow looking face!! I still have about 4lbs to lose before my BMI is below 25! I am 5ft 5" and weigh 153lbs, so I still have weight to lose for sure!! Sometimes it is out of concern, and sometimes people say it because they knew how big I was before I started this, so I guess to see me having lost so much weight, they think I should stop, but it is a lifestyle change not a diet and my body will stop losing weight when it is ready!!

Most people have been supportive, few have been envious might be a good word, one or two have been spiteful. I would try not to bite, but nod in all the right places and just think, that the people who make the worst comments are often over weight and do so out of their own issues!!

Weight Loss What made you fat in the first place Oct 06 2008

It's a good question!! For me it was a combination of lots of things. My mother was an emotional abuser. One minute I was "fat" and should be ashamed of myself, then the next, I was under eating, losing too much weight and "anorexic" Even as an adult, I looked up to my mother and hung on to every word she said. Que the classic yo-yo pattern and an eating disorder which kind of dealt with my confusion in the mix. Add to that, I was very young when I left home and had no idea about cooking and healthy eating. More so I did not understand that eating what I wanted made me gain weight.

Anyway, 4 years ago, my mother disowned me. I got depressed more and more. I ate loads, became sedentry, then eventually did not want to go out of the house. I gained a whopping 55lbs+ and then started suffering the health problems. Sore muscles, fatigue, increasing depression and PMT, sore knees, oh the list went on.

In January I took the step and went to the Doctor for help. I have lost the weight I gained and some! I exercise and enjoy it, my eating disorder and depression has gone, Igo out every day, I have reclaimed my life and am now happier than ever!!

Fitness Wii Fit...Awesome, or what? Sep 29 2008

I SWEAR by my wii fit!!! I have had mine since April and have lost tons of weight since then. 40lbs +!! Years gone by I went to the gym, swimming, circuit training etc, and my weight yo-yo'ed as I was never consistant. The past three years I got depressed, and in January this year I decided I need to lose weight. It took me from January til April to lose about 15lbs and realised I needed to do more exercise. My self confidence was rock bottom, so gym was not an option for me. So I bought wii fit. I fell in love with it. It's something I could do in the privacy of my own home and it tracked my weight and BMI etc, it kind of helps to stay on track. It is so motivational and it encourages you to do the 30 mins a day. I would get cross if I didn't get chance to do my 30 mins!!

Now I have lost so much weight, and am so much fitter, the Wii fit is not much of a challenge for me now. However, I bought a bath step to put the balance board on to increase the steps work out and does it ever! My confidence has gone through the roof now, and I use the wii fit to continue to track my progress, but I now have a bike I try to ride 10 miles a day at least 5 times a week and I go swimming once a week. I still use the wii fit for work outs on days I can't get on my bike so at least I am doing something. I also use it for the muscle workouts to concentrate on the areas I want toned, and use yoga which is fab as well.

I don't care what anyone says, the wii fit worked for me and is brilliant for those needing to start off exercising. My legs bum and tum have toned LOADS. Absolutely everyone I see comments on how well toned I am. It's money well spent if you ask me!! Since January I have lost 56lbs and I am toned. It's amazing.

Fitness I have Plantar Fasciitis...no gym membership an exercise ideas? Sep 21 2008

Original Post by dbackerfan:

Check your local community college if they have classes.  I take a weight lifting and a cardio class at my comm college and for 12 weeks of classes its only $50 a semester hr per class -- lots cheaper than a gym membership plus no long term commitment.

I to have PF and had to stop walking - I say go to a podiatrist get custom made orthotics - ice the foot ( get a water bottle fill it 3/4 full of water freeze over night and run foot over it)

I also purchased an elliptical for $300 at Walmart that has lasted well over 3 years with no problems.

Also not to offend your doctor - but (s)he hasn't a clue about weight lifting.  You can burn a good amt of calories in 45 minute workout of heavy lifting reshape your body and not to mention the "afterburn" and higher metabolism you get with more muscles.

I have to agree with the above. I have PF and was told not to exercise in weight bearing exercise. I took up yoga and do muscle work outs concentrating on my calfs and ankles. The yoga stretching really helps. I also used TENS in the early days of exercise. Weight is a big factor of PF and once you loose weight and exercise and build strength in your legs and feet, the pain disapears.

Don't be afraid to exercise, that was my problem in the beginning. I also had substatial ankle rolling inwards, and I was advised not to do exercise that involved weight bearing, However in reality I had to do some gentle weight bearing exercise to start making any difference. For about 3 years I sat about grumbling in pain and gaining weight which made things worse. In the end even walking caused my foot to swell up like a balloon and in terrible pain, and I convinced myself that was it for me. It's a vicous circle, but in order to get out of that, you have to push yourself a little to start and gradually do more. Yes in the beginning it will hurt until you start to build up strength and loose weight, but the pain will get less and less and eventually the problem will go away!!

I know I am no medical expert, but I believe that sometimes professionals advise not to exercise to protect themselves in case you did injure yourself. After my personal exerience, I decided that in order for me to really improve things for myself, I had to push myself. It worked for me.

Motivation I was wondering... Sep 21 2008

You need to look at whether you are actually hungry or just think you are! If you exercise hard in the day, but don't eat enough you will feel hungry in the evening. The best thing is to drink water and see if the pangs go away, as like someone has said, sometimes the brain confuses the hunger signal when actually you just need to drink! Cerial I know is not only convieniant but also a fairly balanced snack so it is easy to get caught up eating it!

From one evening snacker to another, what I have found to work for me is to eat little and often through out the day. I cut back slightly my evening meal, drink plenty but hold off having anything after I have eaten like a fruit or yoghurt until 1-2 hours after I have eaten. I then enjoy my snack with a big glass of water and that holds off any hunger before bed. It might just be bordem, so chew gum and get up and do something or relax in the bath, you won't eat cerial in the bath Laughing

The other thing to ask is, what are you doing in the evenings? If you are working out, you will probably need something eat. Stick to lean protien if thats the case, but eat a peice of fruit before you work out to give you energy. If you are sedentry in the evenings, then eat big in the mornings, a good lunch, a lighter dinner and a small snack in the evenings.

I wish they had an extension for the Wii fit that allowed your "steps" to be harder (for the step aerobic free style routine under aerobics). I find myself lifting my knees really high just so I raise my heart rate.

I think its great that it has an extremely accurate scale.

I agree with you. On the steps I now make sure I make much bigger steps. I must look really weird on it. Laughing An extention to make it higher would be a good idea. I was wondering if I could get my clever husband to make me a step for it to sit on just for the steps. I am not sure how accurate it would be, but it might be worth a try. I have taken up other exercise now, cycling, walking and swimming. I still use the wii fit to top up on days when I am not doing other things. It's really helped me to stay focused!! I would still recomend it to anyone starting out on the exercise road.

I upped the strength exercises and my weight loss has slowed right down as well. Thing is, I have lost 37lbs now through just cardio and healthy eating, and I am now concious that I need to tone up as I have lots of little loose wobbly bits. I still have at 25lbs to lose before I am at "ideal" weight for my height, so I don't know whether to up the cardio and slow up a bit on the muscles for now!

I have been using wii fit for 2 months now with a combination of wii sports training, the boxing, working the bag. I have lost 21lbs on there and have clocked up 40 hours exercise and have a gold fit piggy Laughing I have lost 5" off my waist and 5" off my hips. I must say that this has been fantastic for me. I do 30 mins hulahoops and steps first thing in the morning followed by 15mins boxing on wii sports. I do 20mins hulahoops in the afternoon and 10mins boxing. I never enjoyed exercise as much. My thighs, bum and tum have toned up lovely and everyone comments on it. The hulahooping really gives a good work out and although the steps do not really, I just take bigger strides and that increases the impact. A big thumbs up for me!!

The only downside is, it encourages you to do a body test every day, even though the experts tell you to weigh no more than once a week. Everyone knows that weight can fluctuate from day to day. It does tell you that if you weigh at different times of the day, for example if you weighed at 9am one day and 3pm the next. However it does not mention that if you weighed at the same time. It is not always possible to know why you may gain weight from day to day, so the options it gives are not really good options. So when you tick the option "I don't know" it gives you a little telling off. For someone who has suffered ED, this is not a good thing to hear, and weighing everyday is not good either, made worse by rewarding the body tests with a stamp!!

Just to say, I rate wii fit and wii sports as a way to get into fitness. I have had my wii fit for 5 weeks now and I have lost 13lbs since. I have been healthy eating in the mix, but I have a routine now with wii fit that I do my wii fit every morning before breakfast. I now only do hulahoops for 15mins and steps for 15 mins. I certainly work up a sweat doing the hoops. So that is my 30mins of exercise on there.

I now add wii sports in there and do 10 mins working the bags on boxing, my record now being 44 bags I smash down in the allotted time, then I do 15mins of boxing in the ring, which now I am unbeatable. If I got strength left I put on 1lb wrist weights to enhance the effect whilst boxing.

Now, the biggest change. Since doing wii fit and boxing combined, I have started adding in more activities. I now aim for my hour on wii in the mornings, plus I set myself another mission for the day. Whether that will be an hour + good old hard housework, or playing footie or rounders or trampolining with the kiddies, or even a long walk.

Wii machine has DEFINATELY enhanced my fitness and combining it with the weight loss I have more energy than I have had for years and my waist and butt is shrinking!!

You HAVE to stay disaplined and focused, and gradually increase the exercise you do for maximum benefit. Doing so much activity allows for more "treats" so occassionally I eat out and I still have a takeaway once a week. I find allowing that treat a week helps me to stay focused for the week ahead.

what motivates me is concentrating on one part of my body I want to change the most. For me it's my arms and legs, more so my arms because summer is coming up and I want toned arms in t-shirts not bingo wings! Everytime I do a workout I feel like I am melting it all away and I am imagining my lovely toned arms.

Also I always feel so much less anxious and more relaxed after I have worked out. So even when I don't feel like it, I get off my butt and do it and concentrate on those feelings of relaxation and wellbeing afterwards.

Have you got anything to work out with at home? At least if you do some working out at home you might find that's easier than making it to the gym as you have not actually got to go anywhere.

Definately drink more water. Do you have any caffine drinks like tea coffee diet cokes or anything? Because those will dehydrate you. Fiber swells when it gets in the gut, and you need to drink loads of water to help it pass through. Cooled boiled water with a drop of lemon juice in it helps to as does figs or fig syrup.

I was like this to!! I still am to an extent, but all healthy! You have to break the habbit. I used find myself wondering into the kitchen and into the cupboards and I would think, what am I doing here??!! Also, I believe, inbuilt into most adults is this thing where you just have to empty the plate or cant bear seeing food go to waste! This is our parents fault lol. Well it was in my case. My mother would never let me get down from the table unless I had eaten everything on my plate, and then I was rewarded for eating it all by sweets, cakes, biscuits!

For me it was a case of just breaking that habbit. If it's really bad, alarm the food cupboard so when you dip in, it will make you "think" when someone asks "are you really going to eat that" Have that as a no no trigger. I plan my meals and my snacks, and just routinely go and get my snacks when I am supposed to.

Thats all I can suggest to be honest. That's what I had to do, well break the habbit anyway!! Good luck!!

There is no one single thing but a combination that has helped me!! So I shall do a list!!

Seeds! Number 1 super food. Full of goodness and great for snacking and adding to breakfast cerial.

Salad! You can snack all day on the stuff! It can accompany anything, and full of goodness.

Fruit! Again, I snack plenty on fruit. Instead of jelly babies, I now snack on grapes!

Chicken! A versitile meat low in fat that can make a meal of anything. My favorate is seasoned diced chicken breast, fry off with extra virgin olive oil spray (so you use very little but still get benefits!) add in different spices, I like red and black pepper, garlic, chilli's, seseme seeds. Then put in wholemeal or wholegrain pittas and fill it out with salad. yum! Tongue out

My extra virgin olive oil spray! I use it every day to flavour salad and to cook with!

Plenty of water! Obvious benefits!

Having breakfast every day!

Exercise! I ALWAYS feel better for working out and it keeps me motivated!

My spice rack!! I come up with new flavours all the time! Having it by my cooker lets me experience a whole range of different tastes to stop me getting bored!!

Regular snacks!! No need to starve, no need to eat 3 square meals a day. In fact it's better to eat snacks of fruit nuts and seeds, I have set snack times (well roughly) and I take the opportunity to drink a glass of water at every meal and snack and extra's when I exercise.

Enjoy your food! Chew every last bit. Eat slowly. Have a short break whilst eating. Eating slowly allows you to enjoy your food, and allows you to stop eating before you have over eaten. Eating until you are uncomfortably full is not good for you!

No secrets really just common sense, and everybody is different so what works for one won't work for someone else!!

I have just worked out as well and I am amazing myself how I just push myself that little bit harder each day and feel like I can do it!! Right now I feel awesome and the KFC is a distant memory. I feel glad now I kept it all down and survived. I did not wake feeling THAT bad, rather more determined to keep at it.

I can't get over how much better I feel in a day for eating regular and healthy, and working out to. I feel more motivated as the days go on, and my determination to beat this horrific ED is so high. I have to eat this rubbish occassionally to show myself that actually, it's ok, but right now I just feel more confident that I can make that healthy choice and NOT feel as though I am missing out!!

Thanks guys for your support, I really needed that. Kiss
