Hi Everyone....I was on this site about a month ago and it seemed like the South Beach diet wasn't working for me. I just wanted to post that it wasn't the diet. My thyroid medicine was way too low so doctor is adjusting it and it appears as though weight is starting to come off. That was the reason why I wasn't losing when I was on this diet. I may try it again in a few weeks after my levels stabilize but glad I found out the reason why I wasn't losing weight and wanted to share it you.

Hope you are all doing well and are making it through your Memorial Day weekend without overindulging. :)

Foods Eating right in NYC? Apr 22 2008

I buy lunch out everyday. I pick it up and bring back to office. There is a deli-type store on every block and about 80% have mixed salads and some sort of seating. These places do not usually have waiter service....just wait on line, buy your food, take it with you or carry it to there seating area to eat. I almost always get a tub of lettuce, mixed with grilled chicken, some added veggies and half of scoop of any dressing that I want. They also usually give a free piece of bread to eat with it. If weather is nice, you might be able to find a park nearby and eat outside.

Bryant park is a cool place to hang out for lunch and there is a Zeytinz Deli right across the street on 40th Street. Salad will run you about $8.00. Figure another $2.00 for a drink. Oh....also fruit vendors on street usually sell 3 bananas for $1.00....can't beat that! LOL.

Hi All - Glad to hear that SBD is working so well for BigDee and Molly. I did buy the book and am still reading cause I must have done something wrong. :(. Today is Day 14 on Phase 1 and I am at 165. Only down 2 pounds and I really stuck to what I thought were the rules. I did cheat a little but not enough to only lose 2 instead of 8. I had about 12 oz of Sangria last weekend. I had one glass of wine (6 oz) this weekend. I ate out many times but only ate what was allowed.  I need to get back to the book and read some more. I jumped around looking for a section about why people would not lose on Phase I but couldn't find one. I didn't track my calorie count each day but when I did it ran around 1400-1800 calories. Ugghhh.

Since starting this thread, were there any others who didn't lose on Phase I? I kept thinking that okay....weight not down but that's okay cause tomorrow it will be down a lot but tomorrow didn't come :(

Hey...weighed this morning and came up with 166...yeah...wouldn't dare hop on scale again to see if a different came up...could be much worse and i just wouldn't want to see it.

That stinks about the fence but we all procrastinate...I guess if we didn't, we would only need to lose one or two pounds.

I decided at lunch that I would walk to Barnes and Nobles and buy the south beach diet book. I've been putting it off cause i think I could fill a room with books and literature on how to lose weight! -- jenny craig menus, weight watchers journals, weight watchers point books, atkins books -- you name it, i got it....but decided to buy SBD cause I am not really seeing any difference b/t SBD and Atkins except that I am a little more salad...I have my beans......and I can have nuts doing the first phase. i think on atkins you can't have that stuff. Anyway, I was hoping I would lose more than I had. I am always so optimistic when I start something new but reality sets in very quickly :(

Have a great day everyone! Beautiful, beautiful weather up here in NJ/NY this week. I hope I can enjoy just a little of it during lunch. Oh -- Pope is here today so it will probably be madhouse at lunch but I will see. Barnes & Nobles shouldn't be too crowded unless there is a mad rush on selling Bibles. LOL

Sarah - Sorry to hear lousy day. That sucks and I hate the dentist and had an abcess (sp?) in my back tooth and actually popped it myself...I HATE THE DENTIST! LOL...Its time consuming, I hate the music, I hate that I don't have a clue what they are doing (even when they show me an xray!) and I just hate that darn drill! And....I definitely would not be in the mood to deal with the neighbors! When having dental work done, you should be able to wear a shirt saying 'don't mess with me, I have a tooth ache!"

Anyway, I can't get a reading on my weight. I weighed 167.5 when I woke up; took a shower and weighed 166.0; immediately weighed again and it was 166.5, again 166.5, and again 167.0. Whatever, I know one pound this way or that way will not make a difference in my shape but would like to think it was 166.0.  I hate dieting. I also stopped tracking my calories last week when I started SBD but think it is time to start again. Also, its just about that time of the month so hoping that will shed about EIGHT POUNDS. LOL. have a great day.

Hi ladies -- I have been so busy lately....swamped working very, very long days. There have been two pages of posts since I last posted so I have a lot of catching up to do! I am glad to report that I survived the weekend! I cheated a little and had some sangria -- couldn't resist cause was in a really good Spanish restaurant. And the best news is......SBD is working for me! I am down 2.5 pounds! YEAH!!!!

Have another question and would love to get your advice....A week or so before starting SBD, I started on Crestor cause my cholesterol levels were very high. Now.....I have to go for the 30 day blood test to see where we are...I am afraid that eating this way will not show that my cholesterol levels decreased and it might actually show that they increased and will cause him to increase my dosage. Do any of you have regular blood tests? Did the SBD have an effect on the results? Do you think I should go off of it before I go for the blood test?

Thanks and sorry I haven't been able to respond to any of your posts this time. I will go back and read them once things settle down for me  but I know I need to have this blood test done soon cause I am running out of meds.

Yeah....I agree. Harping on it is probably not a good idea especially if it causes you to eat too much. LOL! Okay....it is only 7:35 on Friday and this is supposed to be my first weekend on SBD. It feels like I have been on it FOREVER already and really could go for a treat. I went out for lunch today and had a steak spinach salad and it was really nice but I am dying for CRUNCH!!! I know I always, always struggle on weekends and when I'm at home. And to make matters worse, I haven't finished my taxes :( so I can't even get out and get my mind off of it. I have to do that and about 3 other people's returns b4 the weekend is done. Luckily the 3 other people have very simple returns. Mine is more complicated this year. Anyway, you will know if I didnt make it, if I am back on the main forum searching for yet another way to lose this weight....LOL.

Decided to plan a vacation soon to Florida. Guess you guys got me thinking about it. :) Trying to coordinate with my kiddies cause they are both semi-grown and both have school and work to deal with.

Jayne - You can see A LOT of changes. You can see definitely see that you have lost a lot of weight. Wow....I am so inspired by you. Your weight loss chart really is so impressive. Did you do it all with the SBD? I weighed again today but I still haven't lost anything. :)

Sarah - what did you decide to do? I can feel your pain of your situation with your neighbors. It is definitely a no-win situation for either of you. I'm not sure how I would handle it either. I understand that legally there is no responsibility on your part but we do things all the time just cause we feel like it is the right thing to do. Just do what feels right to you. If you offer to pay some, your neighbors may still not be happy. Do what makes you happy. :)

OMG Molly -- You crack me up and put a smile on my face first thing in the morning. Oh, how I can so relate and would just die for a bagel these days!!! And you described the event in such detail I could practically chew the bagel myself!

Getfitgirl (so sorry-I can't remember everyone's name) - You must have had some horrific wind last night to move the trampoline....wow....must have been close to tornado winds! I've had my grill and patio furniture move around but a trampoline! And it went OVER the fence onto a ROOF! Holy Moly!

I am same weight as when I started SBD and up about 4 lbs from when I started CC back in January. Trying to remain optimistic so on the positive side, I haven't smoked a cigarette since 1/2/08 and have definitely gotten myself into an exercise routine. I will hold out on SBD for another week and see what happens.

Have a good day! Its suppose to reach SEVENTY DEGREES today  - so excited! ~~ SueSmile

Wow...I thought you left for vacation this morning. There is nothing better than coming home to fresh clean sheets. That is definitely a great feeling.

Looks like you guys all weigh in tomorrow. Let me know how much you lost overall, it will motivate me! Smile I'm having crunchy food withdrawals but also feeling great that my cake cravings are disappearing.

Sun - I don't mind if you buy all the SB dinners now cause think the stores will have enough time to restock them before I finish up with Phase I.   :)

hey -- I found a cheese cake recipe I can eat while on Phase I. Think I'm going to try it but am afraid that I am eating too much. Maybe over the weekend. I'll try it. I'm reallly not hungry, I just have a terrible habit of eating and feel anxious cause I'm not eating! LOL.

Lucky Rachel going to Florida! Hope she has a great time.

I'm having a crazy day today. Busy at work and wish I could eat anything and everything but so far hanging in there. My hand keeps grabbing the nut jar out of my desk drawer. I wish I had some celery around here to munch on. I weighed myself today and am down 1 pound. LOL - not quite sure what that means cause my weight always fluctuates but hopefully it means that the diet is working. When you guys did Phase 1 did you count your calories? I am counting mine and am reaching my deficit limit but am eating more snacks than I think I am supposed to. I am worried about that. Embarassed

Hi - I think the 5K is 3.2 miles and think the mini-marathon is probably a lot more! Congrats to Entersandlady for committing to that! I still walk and run the 5K. I haven't been able to run the total length without stopping but hoping to run the whole race and not walk in between. Anyway, that's my goal so I will keep trying and if I can't do it in May, I will do another one a few months later. i may not be making too much progress with this weight loss but definitely hoping to feel good about the exercise.

What part of Florida are you going to that has the good-looking greek waiters?

Okay...it's 3:51 and am still holding strong on this diet but had two servings of nuts. I still crave things especially when they put out left over trays of cookies in the pantry and I have to walk right past them to get my coffee! That stinks.

Okay...not going directly home after work so need to figure out what i can grab on the run..maybe in a 7-11? something quick as i have to visit a friend in hospital and no time to swing by home. any ideas?

If you don't mind me asking, where do you guys live? I'm in New Jersey.

Hi All -- Thanks for all your suggestions about the beans. I am going to mix some in with my salad today and hope to get them down. I actually tried the SBD about 3 years ago and swore I would never do it again cause about 4 days into it, i became severely constipated....had to go to the doctor and evrything! I think I even took off from work. It was awful and I never knew how much pain constipation can cause. It's kind of funny to think about it now but believe me, it wasn't funny back then.

Anyway, I feel great. I survived my first day of the diet, stayed around 1200 calories, and feel like I am breaking my carb addiction. Although, I have to say, it was kind of odd, when my boss walked into my office to see me eating slabs of luncheon meat and celery for breakfast this morning.

Bee - I also work out in the morning and know that when I don't do it first thing, I will push it off. This way, I don't even think about it. I go to the gym when I am half unconscious and don't fully wake up until I am already on the treadmill. I 'm doing the 'couch to 5K' program now and plan on running my first 5K race on 5/11. Pretty cool for me cause I couldn't run more than 3 minutes straight two months ago. have a great day. ~ Sue

Hi Guys - I have another question about beans -- I read how important it is to have those beans in your diet during Phase I so I went and bought a can of red kidney beans.....now, my question is......what are you guys eating these beans with? I've had beans in burritos and in chili and I've had baked beans but never really just ate plain beans....do you just heat them up and eat them 'as is' or do you toss them into your salad? Thank you all for helping me to get going with this diet...I am really hoping this one works for me. :)

Oh - Thank you. I have been to so many websites reading about this diet and now I can't seem to find where I saw that you can have juice. Maybe I was reading the wrong list (things you cannot have). I'll toss the orange out and pick up some meat, eggs or lettuce. LOL.

What's your thoughts on eating only at meal times? Do you think it matters? Oh - also, can I put lowfat milk in my coffee?

Anyway, i am so excited now cause I just read that during week 1, not only will you lose quite a few pounds, IT WILL COME FROM MY BELLY!!!!!! EmbarassedSmile

thanks for the advice :) I didn't start with measuring myself so not sure if I lost or gained but clothes are getting tighter which is never a good sign.

I did some reading on this site and think I'm going to try the South Beach Diet and maybe mix it a bit with Paul McKenna's Stop Eating ideas. Wish me luck! Laughing

Question about Week 1 - it says I can have juice but no fruit - I have an orange with me today at work -- i can have orange juice but not an orange. Do you think having the orange is okay. Also, I have another question.....do you think its important to stick to meals or will it work if I just eat protein and vegetables whenever I feel like eating and not specifically 3x a day?

Thanks for the help.

Storm - I'm thinking about starting this South Beach Diet tomorrow (4/7) if I can manage to get it started without going food shopping. I'd love someone to bounce ideas off of. I am 5'5", 165 lbs, 44 years old, and hoping to keep calories to about 1500 per day. I do not have a menu for tomorrow but will be at work and hoping that i will be able to wing it. I just boiled some eggs and know that I have some cold cuts that I can bring to work tomorrow. I'm still looking at the list to see what I can eat. Email me on this site if you want to provide each other support. Good luck!

Are there any staples that I should definitely have in the house to survive the first few weeks?

Weight Loss detox? Apr 06 2008
18:29 (UTC)

Hi - Dr. Oz who has been on the Discovery Channel and Oprah did a special on tv on detox diets. You can probably google him and detox and find out what his tests found. If I remember correctly, he basically took two groups of girls and had one group do the detox (with gross foods and shakes!) and the other group just did a regular diet with moderate amounts of a variety of food. His results indicated that detox diets do not work. But... google him anyway and read about his results to get more accurate info about his test.

Congrats on getting married!

I don't think it really matters what you log into the activity log as long as you are consistent. If you are consistent, then you can look back over your weight loss history and adjust your intake and burn accordingly. Good luck!

Fitness Starting Couch-to-5K...anyone want to start with me? Feb 25 2008

MANTA & LIL.....Thanks for the welcome and advice. I will definitely try to include an incline on my treadmill runs but think I will have to wait until I can run for a longer period of time. Right now I am still at 3 minute intevals. Way to go with dropping below the 160 mark!

GRANDSOPHIE...I am just starting out too...when I set treadmill at 4.0, my heart rate is around 117-123...when I do my short little jog at 5.0, it climbs way up to 145-147. As soon as I drop back down to 4.0, my heartrate is back in line around 120. When I need to increase my duration to 10 or 15 minutes, I am not sure if my heart rate will go higher or if I will just be sustaining it at 145. I like doing these 3 minute jog intevals because I feel like i am burning the most amount of calories with the least amount of effort. Once I increase my duration to 10-15 minutes intevals, I will be working much harder and am not too sure I will be burning a lot more calories but guess I can't run a 5K if I walk every 3 minutes...lol.

Hi. I think it is so great that you guys got this group going over a month ago and you guys are still in touch.

I started the program 3 weeks ago so am still a novice and am only up to 3 minute intevals. I would love to do a 5K run this summer. My question is that I am doing the program on a treadmill, not out on the street. I think running on the street is harder. I am thinking that for me to be able to do a 5K run on the street, I would need to be able to run about 6K or 7K on the treadmill. Do you agree?

Weight Loss gaining weight while quitting smoking? Feb 21 2008
14:29 (UTC)
3

Hi. I quit on 1/2/08 with the patch and on the same day began journaling everything I ate. Main goal was to quit without gaining even though I am 20 pounds overweight. I ended up losing 4 pounds but it has been up and down over the past six to seven weeks. I still have an urge to have a cigarette once in a while (especially on weekends). I keep niccorette gum around and a low dosage patch for days that i am feeling particularly weak. Even when I was on the patch, I would eat a piece of nicorette gum during the first few days - not a lot - just one or two here and there to prevent me from lighting up. Each day gets easier and easier. My suggestions: --move your calorie intake to a maintenance level for a few weeks, --focus on becoming an overall healthy person (boosting up my exercise routine also seems to help me.), and --track and journal and tell the world how many hours and days you are smoke-free and how much money you have saved during this time.

Your baby will be very happy that he/she can go home to a smoke-free house! Best of luck!
