i know you think you just don't have the time for anything besides school, but consider joining a sports team in the fall.  i added sports to my already busy high school schedule my freshman spring, and i found that it forced me to budget my time better and schedule my priorities, in the end even giving me time to relax!

Foods yogurt vs ice cream May 27 2009

I love Greek style yogurt, and Fage makes a 2% yogurt with honey which is as good as any dessert I've ever had!  It's also a good any time of day food, which I don't consider ice cream to be.  If it was ice cream (even chocolate) versus Greek yogurt (even plain), I would pick the yogurt.

Foods Bone in Skinless chicken breast May 26 2009

Go for boneless skinless I think... just remember that the bone will affect the weight of the chicken breast when you're calculating how big it is/how many calories it has.

Foods Wheat?!?!?!? May 26 2009

You should see a doctor about your sensitivity to wheat/gluten... it could be a mild allergy or as severe as celiac disease.  Your doctor will also have advice for your diet.

One of my friends used to be severely allergic to gluten, she would substitute rice bread and rice cakes for the usual wheat products.  I've found a lot of gluten free cereals at Trader Joe's that are as good as wheat based cereals, so that would be a good substitute.

Recipes Breakfast Sandwich of the Gods May 26 2009

I workout with a team in the mornings, so I'm generally STARVING by the time I get to breakfast.  Then I usually make two sandwiches... I cut two pieces of rye or pumpernickle bread in half and each sandwich is two halves of bread, an egg, salsa, spinach, mushrooms, and onions.  I do not hold back with the amount of veggies that go on the sandwich.  They are epic in size but less than 200 calories each, also a great balance of carbs, protein, and fat!

I like how you made a sweet and savory sandwich, the cinnamon intrigues me.

I love onions. I put them in almost every cooked dish! I don't know why people don't like them... so much flavour for so few calories!

I totally agree!  Onions in EVERYTHING!

Foods Fiber deductions May 26 2009

I think the calories from fiber are already deducted from most packaged foods in the US, but this is not the case in every other country.  This is why Canadian and US foods might be exactly the same but have different calorie counts in the nutrition information.  The reason the calories are deducted is that you aren't actually absorbing any of the calories from the fiber, so it makes sense that a deduction is made, but in general if you deduct from foods when you're already receiving a modified calorie count, you'll have a lower than actual calorie count for the day.

igloogal, I think corduroy understands that mm are smaller than cm, and I'm also hoping you didn't mean 3mm... that is practically a crumb, and an entire cup of feta crumbles runs you about 400 calories.

Fitness Anyone do cario for 1 hr many days a week??? Feb 27 2009

i do a lot of cardio.  i'm a rower, so i spend about an hour on the rowing machines in the morning and then either do a cardio lift circuit, power yoga, or run later in the day.  i have really bad knees that get sore from running definitely and sometimes from the erg.  i do some PT exercises to target the muscles around my knees and that helps a lot!  if you're at school you might have access to a physical therapist or athletic trainer, be sure to check.  also, be sure to ice afterwards and heat beforehand, it will alleviate pain significantly.

you might want to look into orthodics to help support your arch.  to relieve the pain, do an ice massage after working out and whenever your shins hurt by pressing up and down your shin with an ice cube... really press hard!

I like either rowing 2000 (about 30 minutes) or 5000 (about 45 minutes) meters.  I'll do HIIT for 30 to 60 seconds every few minutes (rowing faster and watch the estimated calories burned per hour go higher). That way it varies the workout and gets your heart pumping.

The big number in the middle of the ergometer screen is your split... it tells you how long it will take you to row 500m.  The workout above is a really low intensity workout, which is probably why she likes to use it for a warm-up or cool-down.

However... I am a competitive rower and can say that the erg is a perfect cardio tool.  It takes me less than 7:30 to do 2000m on a good day, and in 30 minutes I can crank out about 6500m while not at full pressure.  Use it for what you will, but you definitely have options, you can get a really intense workout from the rowing machine.

i am taking seasonale... 4 periods a year is much better than 12!  it is an every day pill, and it sounds like you want something that you don't have to think about so much, but the benefit is you can stop taking the pills at any time and i haven't seen any weight gain at all.

Fitness A question for rowers Oct 14 2008
04:29 (UTC)

that is kind of weird... I've been rowing for 5 years practically exclusively port... and while perhaps a seasoned rower can tell by the way i hold myself which side I row, there is not a difference that great between my arms.  Maybe my back, but that's a different story.  You should be doing a slight majority of the pulling with your outside hand, so I guess it makes sense that that arm should be stronger, but I don't think it should be so much stronger that it is physically larger.  Try to even out your pulling is my only suggestion.

I like Fage best as well.  Oikos is more of a creamy texture like regular yogurt, but Fage is almost like a sour cream consistency.  Oikos makes a lot of great flavored yogurts... personal favorite is blueberry.

Foods Sandwich every day? Oct 09 2008

Nothing's wrong with a sandwich every day.  Just load up on the veggies and it'll be a big sandwich.  I also really like rye bread, and heard that it's easy to digest... it also tends to be a little lower in calories than the wheat bread I find.

I was excited to try the new starbucks hot chocolates because I thought they would be lo-cal.

Why would you think it was low-cal?

I agree... I wouldn't assume it was low-cal, especially since it's from a chain coffee house.
