Weight Loss I'm 5'2 and want to lose 8-10 pounds!!! Apr 04 2008

Misty, you say you had to eat at least 1500cal to lose weight with all the working out you do... I guess it IS true what they say about eating more to lose!!! I'm short too, 5'1, and I work out 7 days a week. I'm not trying to lose weight but I definitely don't want to gain. I just get so confused about the calories I should eat to stay the way I am... it is very reassuring to hear someone else who is short eating a higher amount of cals (i was scared to go above 1200 for so long). Just curious, how much do you eat on days you work out a lot? Do you eat back your work-out calories?

Maybe it works for some & not for others, because I've calculated a total deficit over 7 weeks of 18,000cal, which means I should have lost about 5 pounds. Instead, I've gained 2... I've considered maybe that I'm not eating enough (I eat anywhere from 1200 to 1500cal a day), which has been the subject of many posts, but I find that hard to believe as well.

Have you tried massaging your scalp daily? I read that massaging every day stimulates your hair follicles to grow faster... could be bull but its worth a try!

I don't know if the Smart Start brand is available in Canada - I haven't seen it. But that cereal definitely sounds like something I would love if it were available here!

Thanks for that description sauvignon. I'm sure these ones are just as high in calories, if not more. They have them again in the cafeteria today... I am fighting the urge for them but I think I'm losing the fight. :P

I have fruit that I could have instead (some grapes, raspberries & blueberries) but when I think about eating it, its just not as enticing as that cinnamon bun!

Fitness Hip Hop Abs with Shaun T ??? Mar 02 2008
17:52 (UTC)

I've been doing Hip Hop Abs religiously for about a year and LOVE IT! I have pretty much a six pack now from doing that about 2x a week & combining it with cardio & pilates. It depends though, on how you like to workout. Sean T is a little... well he is very very talkative and can get annoying but he has great energy to get you pumped if you're looking for that sort of motivation. (He's also quite entertaining too!). As for the workouts, the 30 min cardio burn is not bad but very "dance-y". If you're pretty fit already, you may not find it much of a challenge. The total body burn is my favourite because it does target a lot of areas & incorporates a bit of cardio, but is not hard to follow. It also feels like it goes by really fast even though its 40min, in comparison to Turbo Jam's cardio party which is the same amount of time but feels like it takes forever. :P

In answer to your question specifically, I don't think its for the very young. It does incorporate more dance-type moves but they're simple enough so that anyone can do them. Hope that helps you in your decision!

Nice! I also walk a lot using the treadmill and the activity calculator was showing that I wasn't burning all that much even though I was on that thing for an hour and fifteen minutes. Thanks for the tip melkor!

Now...does anyone do Turbo Jam or Hip Hop Abs? I can't find anything that tells me my calorie burn for those activities.

Haha, good for you! Wish i felt the same way. Well its taken all my willpower this afternoon to NOT reach for one of those fudge squares! I've been trying to distract myself & went for a healther snack (I had pre-packed some non-fat yogurt with cut-up fruit slices) but go figure again - I'd left this in our department fridge, which is RIGHT NEXT to the table where the fudge squares are! BUT, I'm proud to say I did not grab one and shove it down my throat. My mouth is a little disappointed (can't stop salivating! LOL) but mentally, i feel good about it. :)

Fitness Green Tea Extract Feb 20 2008

Hey I tried the Mega T Green Tea liquid gels and all I found was that they made me super jittery & like my heart was beating too fast... I only took it a few times a week (not every day 2x a day like it recommended) because the effects were too much for me. I didn't really lose any weight either but maybe because I wasn't using the recommended amount...

Thanks. I guess I just want to substantially LOWER my cravings but I don't want to NEVER have the cravings because part of the fun of eating is getting that high from chocolate & desserts, you know? Well at least for me. I just don't want to wake up in the morning & the first thing I think of is cake or a brownie. But I want to be able to enjoy it just as much (as I do now) once in awhile without falling back into feeling like I NEED it.

Hey, I just read all these posts & it seems like Callinetics is a good body-sculpting program. Just wondering tho what specifically it works? Like, how much is better than pilates for body sculpting? I really want to get a super long & lean look, not bulk up at all. Does it have exercises to make legs look leaner?

elainemiller - you said that cutting out sugar for 3 or 4 weeks will stop the cravings...but if you start eating it again after that, will the cravings come back? And if they do, is it full-force or weakened? I'm asking because I too am addicted to sugary foods and would like this insanity to stop! Also, do you have to cut out ALL sugar - like ANYTHING with a bit of sugar in it (ex: fruits) or just those with too much sugar like cookies, ice cream, chocolate, etc?
Weight Loss is there anything i can do today and tomorrow to make up for the terrible weekend? Feb 19 2008
16:42 (UTC)

Hey, I totally blew it too... had about 8 slices of cake in 3 days & went out to dinner & dim sum on top of that... I'm feeling mighty depressed but I think there are a few things we can do to make up for it. My plan is to:

1. Increase my water intake - to minimize bloat (boy, am I bloated!)

2. Stay away from processed sugar, refined carbs (i.e. cookies, cakes, bagels & white bread, etc.)

3. Eat more fibre-rich foods (whole grain breads, cereal, fruit & veggies)

4. Go back to eating my normal calorie amount rather than restricting it to compensate for the weekend (so I don't shock my body even more)

5 . Increase my workouts by an additional 100-150cal burned per session

This is just a start but I hope it helps! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Weight Loss How did everyone do for valentines day? Feb 15 2008
16:22 (UTC)
25

Well I think I did the worst... I had FOUR pieces of cake. I have no self control when it comes to dessert & valentines day is sooo good but soooo upsetting. It started at work when someone brought in this gigantic strawberry coulis cake, which didn't seem overly high in calories (but probably was), and then my boyfriend cooked dinner for me which itself was healthy (salmon & mango salsa) but the dessert was DEFINITELY NOT. He knows I have a love affair with cake & chocolate so he bought me TWO cakes - TWO! One was a mocha Kahlua cake with layers of choc. chip cookies & whipped cream (which I topped with hot fudge and it was so good I had 2 pieces) & the other was an apple torte with layers of cream cheese icing.

And the thing is, I feel sooo gross today but I can't stop thinking about the leftover pieces!!!! I know I'm just gonna go back and eat the rest even though I don't want to. And he's so sweet I can't tell him to keep them away from me because he put so much time & money into my valentine's day gift....

As a side question - does sugar cause water retention like salt does? My consumption of all that sugar has made me feel really bloated today so I'm just wondering if it has the same effect...

Foods Calling all Canadian who might eat at Moxies. Feb 13 2008

OMG, its crazy you posted this! Moxies is my FAVOURITE restaurant & I've been trying to figure out the calorie count for their foods for awhile. But having no luck, I've been logically breaking down their menu items in terms of components to try to get the closest calorie estimate.

For instance, I always have the Grilled Salmon on Naan Bread with fries. I figure the naan bread alone is about 350cal & the salmon is about 3oz so approx 100cal. I get the sauce on the side to avoid excess so I figure that is about 100cal. So the sandwich in total is ~550cal. Then there's the fries, which we all know is high is cal so I figure thats about 350-400cal. Unbelievable, huh? Almost 1000cal in one meal!

Not to mention, i ALWAYS get the white chocolate brownie (its my favourite!!!!) and eat one WHOLE one myself - not the Bite of Brownie, but the WHOLE version. I estimate that to be about 900cal itself... so yeah whenever I go to Moxies I'm consuming almost 2000cal in a sitting!!! But you know what, I love it so much I really have stopped worrying about it. I do it actually once a week and have had no weight gain (as long as I'm good the rest of the week) and am one happy camper!

Weight Loss Question about Body Fat Percentage? Feb 12 2008

Thanks for all the advice guys. I know I'm underweight but I'm feeling pretty good and my body doesn't look overly thin (I think). I guess I'll just work on building more muscle and not worry too much about what that scale says. Actually, I'm wondering if my scale is a faulty one - at one point I weighed in at 94 lbs, and literally five seconds later it said I was 98 lbs! :P Maybe I'll return it and get a different one to see if there's a difference.

Thanks, its just that I was a little worried about whether 16% was very unhealthy and if so, how I should change my eating and/or exercises to bring it to a healthy range...

Fitness Do the squats/lunges in aerobic workouts count as strength training? Jan 30 2008

Weight Loss Cheat days...help or hinderance Jan 30 2008
18:50 (UTC)

I'm kind of curious about this "cheat day" thing... I mean, if say, you had a whole day of cheating - eating pizza, fries, cookies & whatever else comes your way, wouldn't that really throw off your healthy eating & calorie deficit for the week? Because all those "cheat" foods can really add up - and probably cancel out the deficit right? So wouldn't having a cheat day really just stall progress? I'm not really trying to counter it or anything, as I do have a day where I eat anything I feel like, but I'm just wondering if that's a good plan...

I guess maybe a "cheat meal" would work better, but it seems that would only be if you consume within your calorie range... because cheat meals can really add up too! I mean, a meal at a restaurant alone can exceed 2000 calories... but if you limit your "cheating", then wouldn't that take away the point of cheating??? And only having a little bit of the good stuff just make you want MORE of it???

sorry, just trying to wrap my head around this!

Fitness Exercise EVERY SINGLE Day?!? Jan 27 2008
16:42 (UTC)

I think you're all right about my situation - I just didn't want to truly admit it was a problem. It has affected all aspects of my life because I'm consistently trying to plan when I can work out. Even when I'm supposed to go out and enjoy time with friends at a dinner or something, I end up tuning everyone out to mentally calculate how long I should work out later to make myself feel better.

I'm glad I could share my feelings here - I don't think any of my family, friends or boyfriend are aware about this. They all know that I exercise a lot but are not aware to the extent that I obsess. I want to say something but am too scared - I don't want anyone thinking I am crazy or that I'm totally self-absorbed & need to be perfect...

But also I kind of feel like my family had a part in this - I know its horrible but I do feel that way. I used to be overweight as a kid and well into junior high. My family used to tease me all the time and called me things like Whale or Fat Girl. Because of this I struggled a bit with anorexia. I lost most of the weight in high school but then in university, I found that I was gaining a bit due to studying all the time and not being active. To counteract my eating, I would throw up -  not all the time, but every so often when I felt I'd overeaten. I realized it was screwing up my body so I stopped and started exercising like crazy. It worked and now I'm at the weight I want but I think my mind has become so hard-wired towards exercising, thinking its the only way I can keep off the weight (because I really really love food, especially desert).

Now, everyone says I'm so thin & skinny and although it feels good, believe it or not, I feel like that adds even more pressure to stay this way. My parents are always telling people how fit I am, how dedicated I am to staying active, etc. My boyfriend is always telling me how he loves my body because its so toned or that he loves that I'll eat anything I want but not gain weight - I  tell him that I WOULD gain if I didn't work out but he doesn't seem to get it. And I know he loves me for me, and not really how my body looks, but even so, I'm scared that if I gained weight & was chubbier, he wouldn't find me as attractive.... Plus, I work in the fashion industry and am bombarded by images of beautiful thin girls everywhere that I can't help but compare myself to them...

Ok, I'm sorry for writing a novel about my feelings but thanks for everyone's advice - I really appreciate it. :)

Fitness Exercise EVERY SINGLE Day?!? Jan 26 2008
17:16 (UTC)
4

Well typically I will tell myself it will be a light workout but it always ends up way more intense. For instance, one night after having a big dinner at a restaurant I decided just to spend 20 min on the Elliptical as I hadn't worked out that day (yet). I ended up staying on for 1.5 hours... I never really do "light" workouts... I guess I feel that if I'm in my workout clothes & ready with water, music, etc, I might as well do the most I can?! I really think I'm obsessed, but its related to how much I eat in a day too. If I eat bad foods or a little more than what I typically do, I freak out a bit & then go really hard exercising. I guess its the only thing that makes me feel better about not having self control when it comes to food... I guess I rationalize what I get to eat with exercise...

Anyway, I'll be trying to see if I can at least go one day without... Its the hardest when I'm going to bed, knowing that I didn't exercise at all during the day makes me not able to rest because I feel gross.... But thanks for all your help & dbackerfan, I'll try that pulse test to see if I am overworking myself!

Weight Loss frequent eating, frequent hunger! Jan 22 2008
22:11 (UTC)
1

Ive just perused the net a bit to see if the frequent meals thing IS a myth, and there seems to be conflicting evidence... One site said that the reason you should eat more meals frequently is to keep your blood sugar stabilized, which makes sense, but still doesn't explain why I would be hungry all the time.

Bekkie, you might be right about needing more food, but I guess it was just confusing because I never had a problem when I was eating 3 square meals a day. I'm not sure if I should stick to this and eat more, or go back to eating how I was?!
