Stef, How can you switch a black and tan for a Amstel? You know you're not going to be happy with the switch so maybe order a B&T and a glass of water. The B&T will last longer.  Eat celery all night, but please don't take the lite beer path!

Fitness At-Home Exercisers: What Does Your Gym Look Like? Feb 15 2008

I work out at home if I lack the ambition  to go to the gym(which is often). Here I have dumbbells in 15, 25, 30 lbs. I find those good for quick home workouts(doing lunges and such) An exercise ball as well It's great from abs and back exercises as well as playing dodge ball with the kids!

My road bike is up on a resistance trainer and I have a few of the Spinervals DVDs. They kick my butt. I try to do those twice a week.

I'd rather be outside than in the gym or working out in the cellar.Looking around my house though, I have a mountain bike , snowshoes (on the wall), x-country skis stacked with the alpine skis and snowboard in the hall, Road bike on the trainer in the living-room, hiking boots in the kitchen (the canoe and kayak are in the garage)...I know they are not "home workouts", but they're not the gym either!

I think I'll check out Netflix for the Total Body Workout, but I'm not sure yoga is my thing...I'd like to find a workout tape that has lunges and some upper body stuff so I have some company at 5:00am when I'm most likely to workout here at home. Any suggestions?

Working out in the  hard zone burns a ton of calories in no time, but the % from fat may be less, but because you burn more cals it sorta washes itself out.

To add a comment here - your boddy only burns fat below your AT - not above.  Calories are always burned with increasing quantity at higher heart rates (ie level of intensity).  If you want to train your body to burn fat you need to know you AT and the zones that are associated with this.

I am not trying to be difficult here - I have been learning how to do this for 2 years, it is not easy and there is a lot of misleading / confusing information.

Good luck.

I think you both are right...At lower intensity HR training, you do burn more fat calories than a greater intensity workout, but the more intense workout will burn more calories over all. Studies have shown that lower intensity workouts will replenish the fat calories first(you'll have to find and read the studies to find out why)...I learned the Anaerobic  (AT)really should be called the Lactate Threshold, but whatever you want to call it, not too many people train for long once they cross into the darkside! I've been there a few times and it's like quick-dry cement pouring into your legs...

Your best bet is to get yourself a heart rate monitor and with the help of a trainer find your max Heart Rate. I tried several of the "calculate your heart rate" formulas and the one derived at Umass Amherst (in Ma.) came the closest to my real MHR the others were quite a bit off. Once you do that, shoot to stay in the 65-80% zone-with closer to 80% better. If you want more info, head to Boarders and look for some books on cycling. They seem to have the most knowledge about heart rate training.

Weight Loss Elliptical for weigh loss? Feb 06 2008

Do whatever workout makes you feel comfortable to push yourself with. You'll do it more if you do!

I prefer the elliptical trainer to a treadmill (feeling like a gerbil on a wheel aside) mainly because if I'm going to spend an hour doing cardio in a gym, I want it to be at least a bit interesting. I like to set up for a hills type program and do intervals. You can't really do them on a treadmill...I also don't have to worry about falling of the darn thing when I'm going for my "uphill finish"! I don't know if I burn more calories than those on the treadmills do, but I'm a bigger sweaty mess when I'm done!!

Another thing I like about the elliptical is it does mimic some of the motions of cycling and hiking (with poles) I'd also say X-country skiing as well, but I'm usually just hitting trees and I haven't experienced that at the gym yet!

PS if you're going to try to figure out how many calories you burn, you're much better off with a heart rate monitor from a company like Polar or Suunto and having a trainer help you find your max heart rate.

Fitness Gatorade - Need your advice Feb 04 2008

I think any drink that has High Fructose corn syrup in the top three ingredients is a soft drink and I'd bet the difference between chugging a Gatoraid and a Coke  is negligible. I like this stuff http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_shot_ele ctrolyte/  for an energy drink.

I'm not really sure what the experts say, but my general rules are:

Weight Training : A homemade smoothie with dairy, fruit, and whey powder after the gym

Cycling less than two hours: Water (in hot weather were I'm sweating just being outside, I'll drink an energy drink as well.

Cycling more than two hours: water and a real energy drink...really anything I can eat as well!! snickers and bananas are my favs though

Hiking: water and salty snacks

Skiing: Beer and burgers

Hope this helps...

Weight Loss I want a cheesburger!!! WARNING: Do not read if you are easily influenced by the insanity of others...lol Feb 01 2008

I say you plan a trip to Carl's for your big fat greasy cheeseburger! Planning one crappy meal a week will keep you on track for the long haul and will prevent you from spending a week later gorging at every burger joint down the strip!.

Myself, I've been planning a trip to Five Guys Burgers near work for the past week. They have the best burgers around so at lunch today, I'll be there with grease dripping down my chin :-) And no, wrapping the patty in lettuce won't work and substituting a Bocca burger(while not bad) won't satisfy the fat craving...We are carnivores after all!

I agree with Toastyboots. I get so sick after eating at those Chinese buffets, that I can't even walk in those places anymore. The burgers I order are also smaller than they used to be as well.

The key to remember is it has to be planned and not on a whim. That's when you'll get into burger trouble.

Weight Loss How do you handle the weekends? Jan 30 2008

I found I don't eat many more calories on the weekend, but where they come from is much different. I take in about 2200 calories of crap on my weekend days.  Well, except Sunday where I took in 6000 calories!! That's insane!

I try to set aside one meal on the weekend to eat whatever I want and not worry about it. On Sunday I skied all day then ate hot wings, nachos and a whole lot of incredibly good Long Trail Ale. I broke the calorie counter on here when I tried to enter the data!! I still managed to lose two pounds of fat and 1/2 inch off the waist for last week.

I think you'll stay on track during the weekends if set aside one meal to go a little crazy with...Just not triple of daily calorie count!
