Motivation Help! I need motivation! Mar 15 2009

Those were good tips.   Here's some more motivation.   Think about how great you are gonna feel when you get to your ideal weight, especially if you are including vigorous exercise in your weight loss program.   You will have more energy to do the things you love to do.  You will be happier at how you look in the mirror, and when you go to try on clothes at the store you will be ecstatic.   You will have accomplished something that is tough to do, but can be done with persistance.   You are young, so you are not yet thinking about long term consequences of being overweight, but your body knows the score.   Your arteries will thank you, your heart will thank you, and your joints will thank you.   So when you look at the delicious binge foods in front of you, just weigh the pros and cons carefully.   And if you just gotta have them, count the calories in them, eliminate something else, and stay within your limits for the day.  If you blow one day, go back to your limits the next.  Persist persist persist.  That is the main thing, especially when you are not that far from your goal, cause it seems to get slower and slower.  And keep on coming to calorie count, everyone here has similar issues and there are many successful healthy eaters here.

I am starting over too.   Lost 25 pounds last year but since may have been eating like there is no tomorrow.   Afraid to get back on the scale, think I will wait a week before I log my weight again.   I only had 13 pounds to go when I fell off the wagon.   It's gotta be more like 23 now.   Oh well, I will take it day by day and just keep trying to eat the right things in the right amounts.   Good luck to everybody.

Molly you are right about airfares.   We just booked to return to St. Maarten and the price for pet travel is up to 100 dollars per pet and we have two.  Might as well buy them their own seat at that price.  And you have to book on the phone to assure a pet reservation (limited numbers allowed in the passenger cabin--tho to be honest I prefer the pets to people as flying companions).  I don't even object so much to the price, after all, if I can afford to have a condo in st. maarten, I shouldn't grouse about getting there, but the reservation process took 45 minutes on the phone and the airline employees were downright rude.  I went out and pulled weeds all day to get over my anger at them, and came in and tried to log onto cc and they were down for database something or other.  And when I tried again it let me log in and then kept error messaging and saying contact customer service and when I did that it also error messaged.   So I went and ate everything in the refrig.   Dumb, huh?  Ah well, cc works today, and I am back on the wagon.  Have been at the same weight for 2 months but with all the travel we did, I am okay with that.  Still would like to start losing again.

Congrats, sujihime, on breaking that 180 mark.  Those 10 pound levels are very important.  For me they are the new level that I will never never let myself get above again.

Ranting today...or actually just sort of whining.   Made it to Boston from Flahdah, and after only 3 days in the car!   Went to Whole Foods.   Felt like crying, it was so beautiful!   Felt like crying again when I checked out.  $$$$$$$   Maybe I could just bring a cot and move in and live there, and then I would not ever have to check out and pay!   Anyway, why can't I have one near where I live????  Oh well, maybe it is better that I don't.  I am, after all, retired and on a fixed income.   Whine!

It really makes me nervous to hear everyone pushing more and more water....has anyone here heard of water intoxication?   Yes indeed, even a substance as innocuous seeming as water, when taken in excess, can be harmful to your health. It washes out your electrolytes, can cause brain swelling.    In normal people thirst is a great guide to water need.  I am trying to find scientific studies that show that drinking lots and lots of water is beneficial....if you know of any in respectable medical journals, I'd love to hear about them.  In the meantime, I will trust my thirst, and so should you.   Which is not to say you should not switch to water from other less healthful things like soda.

No trader joe's here in flahdah either.   But we head up to boston to see the kids on friday and they have trader joe's and whole foods....good eats, here I come.  I really think it is easier to lose weight when really good food is available.   It is just more satisfying.  Gosh, just read that corn may go up to $10 a bushel....maybe people will stop eating all those corn based snacks and junk food now.

There must be something very cat-tantalizing in the smell/scent of red and orange peppers, because we have at least two kitties who come RUNNING and then just go crazy when I am trying to slice or chop peppers! Then again, I have a different cat (McIntosh) whose favorite thing in the whole world seems to be cucumber peels ... which he fishes out of the sink and proudly carries around the house for HOURS.  Gosh, cats are weird.

My cat loves the grape stems after you eat the grapes....chases them all over the house.

Hi, y'all, back from the grand canyon and colorado river.  Neat trip but gained 3 pounds.  The food on the rafting trip was outrageously good and the guides lied...you don't lose weight trying to maintain your body temperature...at least not enuf.  That water was mighty cold, though.   Never thought I could sleep on the ground at my age, but it was not a problem.  Back on the cc wagon tomorrow.  Oh, if only it is all just water retention, wouldn't that be great?

Oh, Ophelia, I could not agree more about gas powered garden tools.  But just think how many calories it uses.  A nose twitch....hardly any!

So we are half thru the week without the Mollster.  Miss her miss her miss her!

Okay, guys, it looks like we have been falling down on the job since Molly is on her trip...c'mon now, we gotta keep up our end here!   I am falling off the wagon without everybody's rants to make me feel better....  HELP!   I leave for a trip down the colorado river in the grand canyon on Thursday.   There better be some good stuff here when I get back.   Cause even with all the hiking and stuff I am afraid I am gonna gain a few.

Ah, the Chico's rant!   Yes, the sizes are peculiar....and there are no petites!!! I may be chunky, but my legs are still short.   And doing hems is a pain in the place I keep my spare body fat.

By the way, we did the Holland America cruise to Alaska and it was terrific.  The smoked salmon at breakfast was sooo good, and not all that fattening.   We did a lot of walking the deck to try to keep the damage down, since we were returning directly to our daughter's wedding and the dress and the suit HAD TO fit.   Enjoy!

Whew, so glad  to hear from you, Molly, was getting worried.   To me it does not seem nuts to be depressed and anxious when someone you love is going into harm's way.  If you can just keep focused on how well trained and capable your DH is to deal with whatever happens, it might be some comfort.   And upping the thyroid may assist your mood too.   Your lab results look terrific, tho, what an accomplishment.   Wish you all the best, hope your clouds lift soon.

Been there, done that with the chips.   This week we went to a mexican restaurant and I made the mistake of eating one chip.   And then another. And then....the rest of them.   And then a mexican dinner.   Needless to say I did not lose weight this week.

On a positive note, I got out my trusty chain saw this morning and wreaked havoc on my yard for four hours......and I just looked up how many calories "gardening with heavy equipment" is.    Zillions!     Maybe I should clear my whole yard...

Hey, Molly, how about this.....when your DH comes back from his deployment, you could be even healthier and more gorgeous than you are now.   What a terrific surprise for him that would be.   And for you.   Just take that deep breath, set a new goal, and start over.   You can do this.  You have done it.  And we will all be here to help.   I know I will!   I can't seem to lose these last ten pounds, so it will probably take me until he returns to do it.   And I really can't seem to do it without checking in to cc every day.   Even if some days I only lurk.   HANG IN THERE!!!

THROW OUT THE SCALES!!!!  ALL OF THEM!!!  SCALE BOYCOTT!!!

RANT TIME:

I was all proud and happy about my wonderful workouts this weekend.  My mother was over and I joyously show her my biceps.  Yup, biceps from weight training Saturday.  She wrinkles her nose and says "do you really want to be all muscles?"   Yet another woman who believes that having muscles turns you into She-ra.  YES, I want muscles, so my underarms don't jiggle and I can be proud to wear a sleeveless shirt.  GEEEZ!  How about some support.

(to put perspective, my mother is a petite little thing who says things like "oh, man, I am back up to 110"; I obviously take after my father)

It is amazing how mothers have the unique ability to inflict hurt, isn't it?   Even when they think its in "your best interest".   Well here is some support for you from an old lady who is suffering with those creepy bat wing underarms.   Keep it up!   My arms are a little smaller since losing weight but still baggy flabby, and at this age it is really hard to add muscle (tho I keep trying).   And there is nothing wrong with being strong, it comes in handy sometimes.   But work on those triceps too!

My scale is not cooperating either but it is because my mouth is not cooperating.   Today is a new day....starting over with new resolve.  I will not return to being a sausage!   And even tho I have 2 lunch dates this week I will not let it put me off track.    Easy to say.....we will see.

Okay, so today we got a cheesecake delivered express as a thank you for putting our niece and her family up when they got stranded at the airport in St. Martin.  It was nice of her to thank us, but......HELP!

On a positive note, I tried on all the clothes I left in Florida six months ago and a lot of it is just plain TOO BIG!    Yaaay!     Omigosh, even fit into my old bikini (tho I would not wear it in public probably).   That was really a kick!  I think the exercise had a big impact because the stuff is even looser than it was when I used to be this weight, so my shape has changed some.

I am having a harder time with my diet here in the states tho.  Too much temptation everywhere.  The food in St Martin was wonderful, so good that a little went a long way.  Here it is good but not spectacular, and I keep looking for more.   Well, maybe I will go out and buy some shorts one size smaller for more motivation.  And I will keep checking in with y'all for help.   I would hate to blow this now, I feel so good.

Sort of like the dh who says "lets go for a walk"   and then he walks a block ahead of you.   Sometimes I just want to take a wrong turn and see if he misses me at all.

Oh my gosh, I am off line for 4 days and y'all have gone crazy!   Took me an hour to read thru it all.   The  questionaires are neat, but I am way too lazy to fill one out.  The highlights....got red socks on, am a retired pathologist, have a cat spookie (tonkinese) and a 4 pound toy poodle, called peanut.  And raspberries!!!   We are back in the states from the lovely island of St. Martin and dealing with 5 months of mail and an answering machine stuffed with political calls.   The pets liked the flight a lot better than when we used to sail back and forth (six weeks of rockin and rollin on a sailboat).   Just got a fast connection here and a new computer and it took me all day to set it up.   I am going blind from looking at a screen.  Gained a pound flying home (huh?)  guess the scales are a bit different.    Oh well, back on the wagon again, tried to put a little running into my walk this morning again.  Can run for maybe 80 seconds now.    Nice to see you all again, missed you.

Thank you to whoever it was who posted that runners world site, I went to it and got inspired to add some running to my morning walks.   I was kinda disappointed to see what bad shape I am in tho...could only run 1 minute out of 5, so that will have to be it for my first week.   We'll see how it goes.   I have always wanted to run a little because I don't know any overweight runners, it seems like really good exercise that doesn't take too long to do.   Don't know if my 61 year old joints will take it tho, we will see.   Back home to good old USA on Wednesday.

Cottage cheese???   Mix it with fresh fruit and have it for breakfast.   The protein in it helps breakfast hold off your hunger a little longer than plain old cereal.    Also not bad for evening snack.

Just click on the "start recording"   and then double click the first point in your planned walk, then the next point and then next.   When you double click a point a little marker will appear.  You need to put points at all the turns so you get an accurate plot of your path.  When you are done the meter in the upper left will show you the distance.

Oh, bummer, the gmaps pedometer doesn't have St. Maarten on it.  Oh well, we return to Florida next week, and it does have our area in detail there.   What a cool thing!   My husband is always underestimating how far a walk is....now I can know for sure.   In the mean time I am afraid I am pigging out on baguettes and croissants for a couple of days.    No French bakery in central Florida!   Only a half a pound to go before I am at a "healthy" BMI.   And then 14 to goal.   But boy are these last few tough to lose.   Very slow.   Oh well, keep on trucking!

I would really like to rant today but if I start I will not be able to stop.   We have a guest (one of the problems of living on a tropical isle when it is cold elsewhere) who shall remain nameless, but who is driving me nuts!!!   Let me just say that I will be serving dry lettuce salad for the rest of the week and there are plenty of restaurants he is welcome to go to and buy his own darn food for a change.   This guest does not know how to be a guest.   We actually have a guest rating system, DH and I, which goes from 1 to 10.  Depending on rating, that determines whether the person is ever invited back.    Minus two is this week's rating.  I feel like emulating my cat.....yowwwwl!
