Weight Loss Coffee for Breakfast...ok/not ok? Dec 08 2008

Ohh, now that is BAD! If you only drink the coffee in the morning and then don't eat anything again until 2, you are not getting the most out of your metabolism.  Your body can start to go into "Starvation mode" if you go too long with out food and it'll actually hold on to the food you do finally put in your system.  The best is to eat every 3-4 hours, just small meals.  I have just been cutting out my first meal and replacing it to coffee and then I start my meals 3-4 hours after that.

Thanks to all of you for your advice! After losing 95 pounds, the "normal weight loss routine" can get kind of old... so I'm changing it up a bit!

IF you space your meals to about 3-4 hours between each meal and eat small 250-350 calorie meals, you keep your metabolism going and you digest your food better.  I know that for sure.

I have always heard to try to stop eating about 2 hours before you go to bed to give your body time to digest before you put it in "sleep time mode."  But, I've also heard to eat a little healthy snack before bed as to keep your metabolism going as much as you can.  Personally, I'm not sure hwat is more true! lol  If I have a late night snack, I try to make it yogurt or veggies, something light.

In my experience, eating late at night HAS affected my morning weigh in....but, just don't weigh the next day! ha ha ha

I'm sorry that I don't have the definitive answer, but maybe that would be a good one for the nutritionalist just to be certain!! I'd like to see her answer!

Thanks for your responses! This was helpful.  I've lost 80 pounds, so I know I've been doing something right... but I know these last 30 that I need to lose will be much more tough and I'll have to pay attention to all the little things like this!

Thanks again for your suggestions and help!

Weight Loss Can i get myself out of starvation mode without gaining back the weight i lost? May 19 2008

I wont even comment on the calorie in-take... ok, I will... Girl, you have to care more about yourself than to starve your body of the necessities!! You losing weight is never as important as you staying alive!!

On that note... I really don't know how your body will respond, but my guess is you will have some days of fluctuation until you get it back into "whack"... As a woman, you should never go below 1200 calories in a day! If you are physically active, you'll need to add on some calories.  I know there are crazy crash diets and going WAY low on calories that can get your body to give up some calories... but slow and steady wins the race and you'll feel great along the journey!  Take it from me... I'm 75 pounds down, 35 more to go... but I've done it over the past year with just eating about 1200-1500 calories each day and working out atleast 3 times a week...

Good luck and I hope you're able to jump up to your healthy calorie intake with out worrying about what the scale says... no matter what it says over the next week... over the next month, you WILL lose weight as you exercise and stick to your 1200+ calories!

My "Must Haves"... are:

Quaker Weight Control oatmeal.... the Maple & Brown sugar flavor.

Quaker (I really don't love the company, just these two things! lol)... 90 Calorie chocolate chunk granola bars.

Fiber One (the original kind) 1/2 cup a day! 14 grams of fiber baby!!

When I am going to be out and don't know if I'll have a healthy option for eating, I'll put a slimfast in my cooler bag with ice and bring it along to make sure I still eat every 3-4 hours and eat healthy!

For dessert, I have recently found Weight Watchers ice cream... the chocolate fudge brownie is TO DIE FOR and I have NO IDEA how they keep the calories/fat so low!!

Those are my trusty staples and stand by's for a consistant day or for a day when I need my favorite snacks!  I have just found the book Hungry Girl at costco and it is the best $9 I have spent in a while! The recipes are fun, different and even close to some of the old favorite "bad" things! =)

Thank you for all of your responses!  I am doing much better today.  I allowed myself a pizza splurge and got it out of my system! =) It is hot here in southern CA today and I have a bathingsuit on... now THAT has to make a girl feel good after losing 70 pounds! lol  I can't say I'll take my shorts off, but heck, atleast I'm half proud! LOLOL

I know I will make it through everything on my plate because I can't just sit down and give up... I push on through each experience and God is good to carry me when I'm feeling weak!

Thank you again for your responses... it is very encouraging to not feel alone in the weight loss process and just the processes of "life."

First things first, make sure you have new and good work out shoes!!! That is paramount.  My cousin is a personal trainer who could run miles and miles, but he said if he puts a bad pair of shoes on, he can't go a 1/2 mile with out cramps.

I was 265 11 months ago.  I'm 200 right now.  I have been doing the elliptical for 30-45 minutes each day (with a change up to the treadmill at an incline and decent speed, but I don't enjoy the treadmill as much.... I do find that I like a brisk walk but to get my heart rate up, I have to add in the higher incline).  After I am done with that cardio, I go to weights.  It is very important to add weights into your routine because muscle burns more calories than fat (fat burns almost nothing)... AND, your body burns calories reparing the muscles that you've worked out that day (that's called the "After Burn").

When I used to get cramping in the beginning... I would slow the speed and up the incline or resistence... My lungs had to get used to working out too or I got sharp pains... I also got sharp pains in my side.

Just know that the pains will go away as you continue to give it your all and train your body into exercising!  Make sure you have good shoes and make sure to work out within your ability.... but, don't wimp out! =)

Hope that helps!

Weight Loss It's been 2 months...I must be doing something wrong... Apr 13 2008

To me, it does not sound like your diet is bad... unless you are not getting enough calories.

A couple of things come to mind... if you do the same thing day in and day out, your body knows the routine and doesn't lose... Try changing it up every few weeks... maybe tweak the diet, maybe do different exercises.

Other than that, I might have my thyroid checked if I were you... Or get a physical done to make sure you don't have any health problems keeping you from losing weight.

I have lost consistently for the last 4 months... all I do is write down everything I eat (every bite and finger lick counts!), stay around 1200-1500 calories depending on my activity level that day, eat every 3-4 hours, and exercise!!  I eat Quaker Weight Control oatmeal every morning and then have meals that are about 250 calories every 3-4 hours after that.  A lot of times I have a bulk of my calories left for dinner time so I can enjoy it with my husband when he gets home.

Don't know what to tell ya... At this point I would probably see a dr if I were you.... that is, if you're truly being honest with yourself about what you're putting in to your body!  I had a roommate who would have listed a healthy diet, but she was always sneaking cookies and other snacks with out putting them on her list of things eaten that day! =)

Good Luck!

Honestly, I would probably pass my entre over to one of the willing guys at the table and just eat whatever veggies they offer.  I would bring a slimfast in the car (I have a cooler bag with ice for these types of occassions) and I would drink the slimfast while driving from the wedding to the reception so that I would not feel hungry at the reception.  I'd eat the veggies just to be eating while everyone else is.

Consider this... it's one meal. =) I have completely skipped a meal my family has prepared before because it just didn't fit into my diet... I get my own stuff on the side and just spend the meal time in socializing.  Find a dance partner and burn some calories! ha ha ha

Good luck!

Weight Loss What is DEFICIT?! Apr 07 2008

It sounds like you're getting the right idea now!  I was one of those people who did more than a 1000 calorie deficit and stopped losing weight... as I ate a bit more, I lost more weight... It's odd, but true!  Good luck with your goals!

I have heard not to eat within 2 hours of going to bed... to give your body a chance to digest the food before you go to bed.  I don't really know if that is accurate either... I am pretty sure I heard Dr. Oz say it though... just to help your body get that done before you go put it in sleep mode =)

Wouldn't it be nice to just have someone we could ask all our questions about this "stuff" to and know they were right all the time??? ha ha ha

Weight Loss What is DEFICIT?! Apr 06 2008

Since nobody has answered you, I'll do my best to describe it as I know!

Each pound is equal to 3500 calories... If you want to lose 1 pound a week, then you need to be down by 500 calories each day... 2 pounds a week and you need to be down by 1000 calories each day.  You don't want to go more than that, or your body can go into starvation mode.

Your BMR is your Basal Metabolic Rate... this is how many calories your body would burn just to exist, if you stayed in bed and rested all day long..... to pump your blood, contract lungs, ect.

You take that number (which you can find out in the tools)... add on the amount of calories you burn in a day... and then take away the amount of calories you eat... you'll have to have 500-1000 left over... which equals your deficit.

There is also a tool called the Burn Meter (I think that is the name) that asks you about yourself and the amount of activity you do in a day typically... then it tells you how many calories you burn in a day with your activity... then you just create whatever deficit you want out of that.

I hope that helps!  Good Luck!

Weight Loss Feeling Cold, why? Apr 06 2008
05:41 (UTC)

I can't answer the question as to why you are cold... but I can tell you that I am sometimes very cold as well.  I have lost 65 pounds so far.  I have a friend who also lost about this much and said she is very cold often too.

When I am feeling that cold feeling coming on, I will do one of two things.... Either sit on the couch with two blankets if I'm feeling lazy... OR... sometimes I'll get down on the ground and do some exercises and that tends to help too.

If being cold means I'm losing weight... BRING ON THE COLD! ha ha ha

Good luck with your goals!

This is definitely me.  I was bigger when I was younger and while I don't quite see myself as that big I feel it every time I try on a pair of pants.  I'm 5'6" 145 size 10.  I'll try on a size 10 sometimes and the legs are way too skinny.  I try to convince myself that my legs are bigger because I run...I don't know.  I see girls that are so much smaller than me and get a little jealous.  You know the ones that can wear those half shirts and fit into anything!  I try to tell myself that I'm a good size for my age, but it doesn't always work.

Hmmm... I'm 5'6" and my goal weight is 150... Everyone's body is different, but I think you should be proud of 5'6" 145lb... If you have anything to lose, it really can't be that much!  I'm 5'6" and 202... Let me worry about the thighs ok? lol

Shock Window Shock Therapy.... TOTALLY... our church has a lot of glass windows on the outside... my husband and I were going to get our boys on Sunday and THAT TOTALLY HAPPENED TO ME!!! How weird it was to look over and take a double take because I ACTUALLY LOOKED GOOD! ha ha ha... It is those moments when I have to just say to myself, "I'M NOT A FAT GIRL ANYMORE!" lol... I'm still overweight, but I look good.

Funny thing... I actually contemplated asking odd strangers if they see me as fat... just to get it through my head because I KNOW they will say no, but I still see me that way.

I was at the gym and we were all having a discussion in the sauna... I happened to say how much I weighed and this guy totally stopped me and said, "THERE IS NO WAY YOU WEIGHT OVER 200 POUNDS!!!"... (I am 202)... It felt SOOOO good! =)

Hey Ladies...

Ok, so I have the husband troubles too... Not that he is not supportive, but that he burns A LOT of calories in a day, so he can eat much more than me and "Indulge" much more than me.  I have lost 63 pounds now and I'm down to 202 from 265!!  Here are our compromises:

1. I don't want him to "Suffer" because I got fat and have to fix that... so I don't ask him NOT to eat what he wants to... I just ask him NOT to put it in my face!  He has bags of candy, but he hides them in his office so I don't see them every time I walk by.  Most of the time he'll eat them when I am not around.

2. I get Fudgesickles that are sugar free and only 40 calories each... They are really good and they satisfy me while we are on the couch and he's having his ice cream.

He actually does enjoy healthy dinners/food so that is not as much of a struggle... My problem is just that I could sit around and eat chocolate literally ALL DAY and he could have one thing of chocolate in his desk for 2 weeks... He has self control with sweets and I just don't... so he has to hide them from me so I can have success.

The more he saw my weight coming off, me feeling better about myself, and me looking a lot better... the more supportive he has become.  Just keep "doing it" and showing your husbands that you mean business and you care about yourself... they will get more supportive with your success!!

Good Luck!

Nicole

Foods What snack/food do you turn to, in order to head off a binge? Mar 15 2008

First I have to tell yo uthat I WAS the queen of stuffing my face! =) I'd make a batch of brownies and cut them up nicely before my husband got home (only so he wouldn't see I already ate half of them!)...

Something that has made a HUGE difference for me is that I eat every 3-4 hours.  Not only does that give my body the opportunity to digest my food, it helps my metabolism to continue, but one of the biggest benefits is that I never feel that "GIVE ME FOOD" hunger... I can actually think about what I'm eating instead of just devouring whatever looks good!

When it comes to snacks though... The Quaker 90 calorie Chocolate Chunk granola bars are very satisfying to me... Also, the Sugar Free Fudgesickles are AWESOME... only 40 calories in each one! I typically have 2 at night when my husband is pigging out on Ben & Jerry's! ha ha ha

I hope that helps.... being able to think about what you're eating before you're just HUNGRY truly helps!!!

Good Luck,

Nicole

Weight Loss Ladies, I have a question. Feb 07 2008

I Know you have enough answers to know.... but I'll let you know it also affects me!  It's super annoying when I've been doing so good and the weight has been coming off and then I come to a stand still so my body can get the whole womanly episode over! ha ha ha... But, as long as you stay consistent and don't grab for the comfort period foods (chocolate, mmmm)... It will come off just fine when all is said and DONE! =) Good luck with your weight loss!

With weight loss, the amount of calories you need also goes down.  You need to find out your Basal Metabolic Rate.  This tells you how many calories your body would burn if you just stayed in bed all day.  It gives you an idea of how many calories you should be eating depending on your level of activity.  I'm not sure if there is a calculator for that on this site, but you can go to: http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators /basal/basal.html

 I hope that helps!
