I have asthma too (and arthritis), so I know how hard it is to get a good workout going.  I took up walking, and it seems to work for me.  This seems to be a good place for support and all that, so I hope you stick around.  I'm not great at the forum stuff, but I saw yours and figured I'd give you a welcome.  I'm new here myself so i know what it's like to not know anyone on the boards.

So, welcome from one newbie to another!

New Members Do you need to loose HALF of your body weight or more? Feb 10 2008

Sorry I'm late to this talk, but I didn't see it before now! :) I started out at 285 and according to all the charts, I should be at 135, so yeah, that's more than half. I'm down to 205 now - after plateauing at 220 for two years. There's light at the end of the tunnel! I'm actually aiming for 160ish. I think 135 is way too skinny.

Anyway, I hear you, and understand about the bad knees. I have arthritis in all my joints, but the knees are the worst! With my knee pain, back pain, and bad wrists, I can't exercise like a lot of people, but I can walk until the cows come home, so I do that. I started out walking to the end of my block and back - and that wiped me out! But eventually I was able to walk farther and farther. Now I can walk for miles. It just takes time, patience, and persistence.

I'll root for ya!

I have a specific fear of dead things (even bugs) coming back to life and somehow taking out their deadness on me.  Yes, it's strange, but there it is.  Maybe I saw too many horror movies as a child, I dunno, but I can't even sweep a dead bug off the floor, or vacuum it up.  Someone else has to do it, or it will sit there forever.

I fear being haunted too.  Yes, I'm afraid of ghosts.

I also fear making phone calls.  I don't mind people calling me, but I don't like calling other people.  I don't know why.  I just don't like to do it.  I'll put it off for days and days, even if it's urgent.  I'd rather talk to someone face to face or over the internet than call them up.

These are my favorite three:

I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire.

When you come to the edge of all the light you have known and are about to step out into the darkness, Faith is knowing one of two things will happen; there will be something to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly. (attributed to many)

Thanks for the welcome everyone.  Sorry if I don't answer everyone individually right away, I'm really awful about things like that so don't take it personally, okay?  I'll do my best to keep up with who is doing what though.

I'm gonna try to come online earlier 'cause it was one of my New Year's resolutions to have this silly thing off by 8pm, and I've been running over since I started logging on here.  I have to time this better or rework my resolution (too much time on the computer means nothing else gets done).

Anyway, will try and post back when I have more time, but thought I would thank y'all for the welcome.

Take care!

I don't count my calories as I'm eating throughout the day, but I've been logging them on here at night to get an overall picture of what I've eaten. Mostly for curiosity's sake.

Is it too late to join this little over 40 club? I didn't have a chance to read through all 62 pages of this forum, but y'all seem like a tight knit bunch. I just joined calorie count about a week back, and haven't really been active on the forums (I've been ill), but would love to make friends.

I'm 41, and while I don't diet per se, I do watch what I eat. Portion control is the name of my game. I eat whatever I want, just small amounts. I'm in college (yep, at my age), so right now, I eat what I can afford. How I got to be where I am (full time student with no job) is a long and detailed story.

So, I've been overweight for a long, long time - since puberty. I've been fighting genetics, medication side effects, and now, middle-age. It's a wonderful battle, and one I aim to win. I topped out at 285 pounds in 2005 because of anti-depressants and other various medications. My knees and back started to let me know that really wasn't a good weight to be at, so I dropped that down to 220 and have been pretty much stuck there for about three years. I'm doing my best to break that plateau.

So, if it's not too late to join y'all, I hope you'll have me. Let me know how it works, other than posting here, and I'll happily jump right in.

Foods Apple sauce Feb 05 2008

I never tasted the applesauce when I used it in baking, but I used to use it mostly for yellow cakes and such.  For brownies, I used strained prunes (baby food).  Couldn't taste that either.
Foods What is your personal definition of "clean" eating? Feb 04 2008

I eliminated high fructose corn syrup from my diet because I found that it was giving me migraines.  That cut out *a lot* of processed foods right there.  You'd be surprised what foods have that in them.  I was.  Unfortunately, a lot of veggies give me heartburn, so they had to go too.

I like caffeine. I've tried to cut my coffee back to two cups a day.  It works sometimes.  I still use sugar in my coffee because I don't use artificial sweeteners of any kind.

Normally (these last few days notwithstanding)  I try to stay away from foods with ingredients I can't pronounce.  However, since I was too sick to cook, I ate a lot of canned soup.

I guess it all depends on your definition of what's "better".

I would much rather have 1/2 cup of regular ice cream (that's the standard serving size) than any of the "light" junk they have out there because to me it tastes soooo much better.  Plus, it's usually cheaper, and heck, I know what the ingredients are! If I'm going to indulge, I'd rather have the real stuff.  It doesn't have to be organic, but I prefer to be able to pronounce it. :-)
