Well, actually, I'm not going to college... I'm going to boarding school (I'll be in 10th grade)

But anyways, I am trying to loosen up a bit about food and nutrition... I need to start acting more like a "normal" teenager!! haha. I'm going to challenge myself to eat a couple cookies now and then... or maybe go out for ice cream every once in a while. I still want to be healthy, but I hate being so "weird" about food. I need to show myself that chowing down on a burger isn't going to kill me!

Thanks pilgrimdude:) (i like your name... haha)

I really should ween myself off of them. When I go away to school, I'll try my best to eat larger meals in the dining hall so I don't need/want to snack as much at night. Maybe I can make some peanut butter sandwiches during dinner to take back to my dorm for a late night snack...

I'm also bringing nuts, beef jerky, pop-open cans of tunafish, and oatmeal packets to school.... those should be good

Hey dekkos,

I totally understand how eating so much can be hard... But you have to realize, it's truly NOT THAT MUCH. I have teenage brothers and teenage friends (girls and boys) who eat at least 3000 calories a day and maintain their weight.

When I was in the hospital, I was on a 7000 calorie/day meal plan. No joke. It was pretty painful. Have you ever had Ensure Plus? It's a nutrition shake that comes in really good flavors... strawberry, vanilla, butter pecan, chocolate, mocha etc.  When I first entered IP, I LOATHED the stuff because a can of it racks in 360 calories. But I grew to love it as my meal plan increased...

You can pour it in a styrofoam cup, freeze it a few hours, and it turns into ice cream! MMMM.... It's delicious and super healthy. I felt more comfortable eating "ensure ice cream" than regular ice cream because it had more nutrition. Right now I'm gaining slowly/maintaining, but I still eat it occasionally because it's so good!

Some other ideas:

Protein Bars! Some of them have over 500 calories!

Peanut Butter IS YOUR FRIEND.

Steak or Burgers

Drumsticks!!(The ice cream cone kind)

Why don't you make a batch of brownies and sprinkle nuts on top, or coconut? Hey, treat yourself! The faster you break your comfort zone the sooner you'll be ED free!

Weight Gain Mass constant hunger/appetite - what to do? Jul 28 2009

Hey,

I know how you feel. Im always starving. And my BMI isn't even that low! (I'm 16 years old, 5'4, and 108 lbs. )

I've kinda been this way my whole life. My appetite is monstrous. I feel like i could eat 3 large pizzas and still have plenty of room for desert! It's crazy.

I'm eating 3000 a day right now, trying to gain. I burn about 600 through exercise/ day. I don't think im gaining much though. I dont weigh myself because i don't want to freak myself out... I should probably bump my intake up to 3500...

ANYWAYS, since you're 10 inches taller than me, I'd say you need over 4000 to gain anything. Probably more like 5000, honestly. I was in the hospital for a few weeks when I dropped down to 103 pounds... they worked me up to a 7500 calorie/day meal plan! On 7500 calories, completely sedentary, I gained about 4 pounds a week.

Good luck! And listen to your body... eat! I know it's hard... But I've tried listening to my body recently, and it's getting easier and easier. You're body craves food for a reason... it needs it!

Weight Gain Anyone else hesitant about gaining weight because they LIKE to eat alot? Jul 26 2009
16:23 (UTC)

Something that helps me a lot is trying to approach recovery as if i DIDNT have such a compulsive eating problem.

I think about gaining weight like, say, one of my friends would. Most people dont count calories or watch their nutrition like a hawk... To them, gaining weight is simply eating a lot more, and making sure to eat plenty of protein. Gaining weight shouldn't be scary or nerve-racking. It shouldn't cause so much anxiety because it really ISNT a big deal. In the big picture of my life... if i gain 10, even 20 pounds, it just wont make a difference.

Just try focusing on getting healthy and strong. The faster you gain weight, the sooner you can put all this behind you and get on with life. The more you eat, the better. You dont have to have exactly the right amount of calories every day... every body is different!

I literally say out loud "I have better things to do with my life than worry about calories. I'm going to eat this damn *peanut butter, for ex.*, and go study my *flying book/practice piano etc.*"

ANYWAYS, It may help for you to get away from your home town... who knows. But try not making gaining weight so somplicated. Believe me, I know it's hard. But I tried taking a much simpler approach and it's helped me a lot.

Wow. I feel the EXACT same way. Id really love to be in a perpetual weight gaining mode.... i LOVE food! And i always have loved eating. That's why i used to be chubby:)

I also have this habit of not eating much during the day, and eating a lot at night. I love being able to eat WHATEVER i want at night because i have so many calories to eat... its sorta fun! but i know its such a bad habit. I typically eat 7-800 during the day, and 22-2300 for dinner and snacks at night! I know... its terrible.

I want advice on this too! Anyone?

Weight Gain Question about eating back calories/activity level? Jul 25 2009

Its great that you ate 3300. You definately definately need to eat back anything you burn. Remember.. .the aim is the gain! Heck, it would be even better if you challeneged yourself up to 4000 calories!

Im sorta in your boat. Im 5'5 and eating 3000 calories with exercise to gain. I really have no idea how fast im gaining because im NOT weighing myself. Ive been in gain mode for 3 weeks now... it definately feels like ive put on weight but god knows how much. Im relying on my mom to tell me when she thinks i look healthy and fit enough to stop gaining weight.

Anyways, continue to eat more with your new job! You will probably need even more than 3300...

Weight Gain Are you counting your calories like crazy?! Jul 25 2009

Hey,

I dont think I was ever quite as obsessed as you are... But I definately went through a period when I was obsessed to a certain extent... thinking about food, counting calories over and over etc. I've gotten much better these past few months. I think a big reason for that is I'm at a much healthier weight now, and my body doesn't "crave" nutrients/food as much.

It was really hard to stop thinking about food so much. Counting calories had become a sort of lifestyle for me. I really had to FORCE myself to NOT think about food or worry about portion sizes. Even now, I'm so tempted to measure my cereal at breakfast, or my peanut butter, or count my nuts (haha no pun intended), but I FORCE myself to put down the measuring cup. At first I was extremely anxious about not knowing the exact calorie count of things... but it's gotten SO much easier. I realize now that I'll look the exact same and everything will be totally okay if i dont eat exatly how many calories i need.

Last week, I challeneged myself on monday and tuesday to eat 600 calories more than what i need. I didnt gain an ounce. it made me feel so much better.

good luck!

tessa, thanks for the advice:) I really needed that extra motivation right now.

I'm 108 lbs now, so I've gained 3 pounds in less than a week eating 3000 calories a day. I hope the weight gain slows down soon. Im gonna force myself to stick with 3000 calories though, no matter how fast I gain, because Im truly still hungry for the full 3000.

As soon as im done gaining weight, Im quitting calorie counting. Ive tried several times in the past to quit, but havent had any luck. This time is different though. Im going to make a whole-hearted effort to stop. (Ill tape up nutrition labels, throw out the measuring cup etc. ) You're right, I really do need to kick this food obsession now.

Your welcome, Tessa. I always feel better when I "hear it from someone else," too.

I'm 16 years old, 5'4 and around 105 pounds. Im pretty athletic. I always stay moving and productive... I do a lot of running, swimming, tennis, and bike riding. Over the summer, when Im most active, I usually run in the mornings (3-5 miles)... then swim at some point in the day (~1 hour). Ill also take a short bike ride... walk my dog... or have tennis camp or something.

Im active because I ENJOY exercise, though. Everyone is different. If I didnt like to run and swim and play sports, I would do minimal exercise. Im not trying to make you feel like you should work out or something. (Ed's so strange. I know if my Ed heard that some other girl exercised more than I do, my Ed might get a bit restless...)

Good luck with everything!

p.s. how many calories do you eat?

Why dont you wake up, eat, and go back to bed?

I have the same sort of issue. I am litterally ALWAYS hungry. Nothing satiates me. I've had a huge appetite my entire life, and now that I'm underweight, my appetite is EVEN BIGGER... if that's even possible. (I'm 105 lbs. and 5'4... trying to get up to 110. Im eating 3000 or more calories a day with exercise, btw)

I used to wake up hungry, and just lie in bed awake. Now I go downstairs and get some food in me! If your hungry, it means your metabolism is reved up and your body NEEDS food and nutrients. Feed your belly! Kick Ed's butt!

It's hard for me to listen to my hunger cues because Im afraid I'll gain too much weight, or won't be able to stop gaining weight once I reach my goal. But Im trying my best to listen to my belly anyways. Some days I top 5000 calories, but it's all good, healthy food....   So dont worry about eating too much! Its not possible to eat too much when your trying to grow, gain weight, and get healthy!

Thanks so much you guys! I seriously dont know what Id do without this forum...

I was planing on skipping the snack I "planned" for myself this afternoon. Some friends randomly told me I look really good, and my mom agreed that I look good. I guess I interpreted that as "Ok, I look good so I dont need to gain weight." But I know I AM still underweight, regardless of how I look or how my friends and family think I look. I just need to get to a healthy weight again.  It'll be hard at first, but Ill get used to it, and in the long run it's what's best for my body and my future.

Anyways... I did have the snack, and I increased it a lot, too. I had a bagel with peanut butter, a banana, and some vanilla wafers.

By the way... to anyone else out there suffering from an ED: A couple weeks ago I read on this forum that some people "talk" to their eating disorder, Ed. They treat Ed as someone seperate from their true selves who is sabotaging the real them... I thought this seemed ridiculous at the time, but I decided to try it these past few days. When I make my food, I laugh out loud "hahaha, how do ya like me now, Ed?" It's empowering, it really is. It makes me feel so much stronger than my eating disorder, and makes me feel a whole lot better about how much I'm eating. I feel so much more rational and in control when I seperate myself from my eating disorder.      Just a thought. Everybody suffering from an ED should give it a try.

figet, thanks so much:) I really needed to hear that from someone. I just made myself a bagel with peanut butter, and a parfait thing of 3 yogurt, 2 cups of cereal, a banana, and crushed granola bar:) Im hungry for it, damnit! And I just had a clif bar 30 minutes ago... and Ill still eat a big dinner at around 8 PM.

Baylily- Thanks for the kind advice, but unfortunately I cant tell a doctor... My parents dont know I struggle with eating/exercising... Actually, they asked me what I weigh, and I lied and told them 110 pounds. (Im only ~103!) That's why I need to get up to 110 ASAP.

Mikifizzle- I've heard that when you gain weight, it DOES go mostly to your stomach. That's where your body needs it most. With time, the weight should balance out over your whole body. Just dont start restricting. The most impotant thing you can do is KEEP gaining weight, and your weight will redistribute itself. Good luck!

The Lounge Evolution or Creationism? Which do you believe, and why? Jul 19 2009

I believe in evolution. I can't bring myself to believe in creationism, or in the Christian faith at all for that matter. I really truly wish I could believe that there is a God who plans on granting me eternal happiness in peace after I die, ...but the whole idea seems a bit ridiculous.

There have been hundreds of religions throughout history. Most have grown and faded in cycles... some have completely died out. For example, the ancient Egyptians believed in lots of Gods and an afterlife. But their religion has gone "extinct." What makes their religion worse than the Christian religion? The Egyptians had no evidence to back their beliefs, and neither do Christians....

If someone could shed some light on me that would be great. Id honestly love to be able to believe in Jesus Christ... but the whole story seems so made-up and implausible.

Thanks for the reply:)

Yes, I am currently underweight. I am 5'4 and 104 pounds. I was 110 pounds 3 weeks ago, but went on a 3 week trip and lost 6 pounds unintentionally! I promise!

I guess you could say I have a "form" of an ED. Im compulsive about being healthy... I dont care about how much I weigh, though. I love to exercise and eat well.

Im 16 years old...

Ok, so my sedentary maintanance intake is 16-1700. If I am lightly to moderately active, it's about 2000. If I eat 3500 a day to gain, would that be OK? Could I gain 3 pounds a week? I really need to put on the weight fast, unfortunately. Since Im eating so much though, will all the weight gain just be fat, though? Can I still gain mostly muscle?

Here's a sample 3500 a day meal plan I could follow:

B- Bagel with Cream Cheese, 2 hard boiled eggs, Orange (550)

S- Banana, Almonds (300)

L- Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich, Fage Yogurt, Luna Bar (600)

S- Vanilla Wafers, Yogurt  (200)

S- 2x waffles, Fage Yogurt (300)

D- Large Sweet Potato, Grilled Chicken, Corn, Green Beans, Roll x2, Tuna Fish  (900)

S- Vanilla Ice Cream, Luna Bar, Whipped Cream (450)

S- Peanut Butter, Multigrain Cheerios (400)

S- Fiber one Bar, Oatmeal (300)
