8 years ago when I was studying abroad I lost 10-15 pounds in Germany. I ate smaller portions and walked everywhere and spent my weekends traveling all over Europe.  I ate plenty, drank more beer than a should, and never felt deprived, but because I was burning so many calories, not eating college dorm food, and eating the smaller portions that were given by restaurants and the people I was staying with I lost weight.  I kept a bar of chocolate in my pocket at all times and it would last over a week, a square here and there, and it would keep me going in between meals.

When I got back, my doctor told me to gain 5 pounds.

Motivation dealing with other non dieters? Feb 05 2008

I am glad I nearly always insist on paying for myself (unless it is an explicit treat), so I don't have some guy watching me like a hawk spend his "hard earned money."  If a guy has a problem with how a woman eats, then why is he even offering to pay?

My money is "hard earned" and I can order what I want, graze, eat it all, take half home, or leave it on the plate.  That way I can get what I want and not have to feel obligated to clean my plate.  My parents never made me be a member of the clean plate club, so my date shouldn't either.

Foods Why the heck are nuts so high in calories? There's nothing to them!! Good Gracious!! Feb 01 2008

I just ate an oz. of nuts as my 3 pm snack.  I measure them out and then stick to it. With a cup of tea with one sugar packet it makes a nice snack that tides me over til dinner.  A container of nuts can last me weeks and all the fat content satisfies me so I don't binge.  Check out different types of nuts -- some are lower in calories then other.  I love Brazil nuts but they are the worst, so I buy other types.

Also, try half a serving of lightly salty nuts with half a serving of raisens.  It is a nice sweet and salty combo and high in fiber and protein.

Foods Campbell's Golden Butternut Squash Soup? Jan 31 2008

I love all the select soups!  They are very tasty and with a piece of fruit or green salad they susually stick with you.  The only downside is all the sodium, but if you don't eat them everyday they are worth it.  Try the Corn Chowder (approx 400 Cal for the whole box), but very tasty.  The portabella mushroom is really creamy tasting and only 180? for the whole box.

I have tried to make homemade butternut squash soup, but it was a nightmare and super time consuming (at least the receipe I had was) and then it didn't taste very good.  I am a good cook, but I don't think I would make it again.

Maintaining growing hips...? Jan 31 2008

I am 28 now, but I remeber my hips getting wider until 21 or 22.  At my toned, best weight I can still fit into pants and skirts from my senior year of college (out of style, so I wouldn't really wear them, lol), but anything I have left from my sophmore year that is fitted (sheath dresses, pants etc.) won't go over my hips.
Motivation Already fall within a healthy BMI and looking to lose those last few pounds and/or get in shape? Jan 31 2008

Hi!  I am new to calorie count.  I am 28 and 5'5" and 134.   I want to lose a few pounds, but mostly I just want to live a healthy life style and get toned up.  My weight number and what size I wear doesn't matter much, because I know when I am toned I look really great.  I am really out of shape.  I like jogging, but I live somewhere where ice and snow cover the ground 4-5 months of the year.  I really can't afford a gym right now.

See! I keep making excuses for not exercising.  No Excuses!

I have been trying to do some exercising in my living room, but lack of space make it hard to do more than crunches and pilates (the coffee tables edges are my current Nemesis).  I have been trying to do little things to make up for my sedentary job making.  Taking the stairs, walking to the store, etc. instead of driving a couple of blocks, and (lol) making multiple trips to the copier, reorganizing my file boxes to require some lifting.

Weight Loss Vent: weight loss advice from my DOCTOR!!! Jan 30 2008

I recently had my thyroid removed, but prior I had hypothyroidism.  All the symptoms you are describing are classic.  I was lucky and it got caught early on before weight gain,  however a girl in my office had all the same problems and gained weight and doctors just ignored the problem for years, until it was finally diagnosed.  She was playing college sports at the time and it didn't make any sense for her to gain so much weight at once in such a short period of time.

Women have to be so proactive in their medical care. I've read some articles about how doctors can be very dismissive of women's complaints and under-diagnose things like heart problems as indigestion and thyroid problems with weight gain and fatigue as the patients fault for not eating right or exercising.  It isn't fair and needs to be addressed in the medical community.

Find another doctor and pat yourself on the back for standing up for yourself.  Maybe your thyroid isn't the problem, but at least you did everything you could to rule it out.
