Weight Loss No weight loss after a fast and weight loss after a fruit binge? Jun 02 2008

You aren't going to see fat loss of any kind in a day.  More likely the loss the second day was water weight, and carryover from the fasting day.  Daily weight fluctuations of even 5 pounds are normal and shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

I would recommend you only weight yourself once a week, rather than every day.  That way you won't get confused by normal daily fluctuations.

Also, to go along with the brown bag trick, add an apple to the bag.  Apples give off a gas as they ripen that causes other fruits to ripen more quickly.  Some other fruits do this too, but I can't remember which ones off the top of my head.

They aren't good choices -- as vegetables -- for someone on a calorie controlled diet, however.  Beans and legumes have around 100-150 calories for a 1/2 cup, which is way more than even potatoes, corn, and peas.

And the food pyramid DOES consider them a protein source: http://www.disabled-world.com/artman/uploads/ pyramid.jpg

I guess what I'm saying is that while they COULD be considered a vegetable, it's stretching it, and they are far from the best choice AS A VEGETABLE.  It would be better to eat other, less starchy, vegetables for the 5-a-day, and fit beans in elsewhere in your diet.

You mean 5 fruits and vegetables a day?

I wouldn't really consider legumes of any kind a vegetable.  Nutritionally, they are much more of a starch or a protein, given their nutrient composition.  Green peas and lima beans, if prepared as a vegetable, are the closest.

The food pyramid puts beans in the "meat and beans" category, and that's where I would consider all legumes belong (although if eaten with meat, I can see an argument for them being a starch -- baked beans, for example).   Stick with fruits non-starchy veggies for your 5-a-day, with starchy veggies like peas, lima beans, potatoes and corn used occasionally.

Crazy week and I completely forgot to check in.  :c  Didn't even weight myself on Friday.  The last 5 days have been INSANE.

I'll weight myself tomorrow morning and post it!  Probably won't be great given how stressed I've been, but gotta keep on truckin'!

As far as stews and soups go, I try to cook the veggies minimally so they don't break down so much.

See, I think this might have been part of the problem.  I make a lot of bean soups, which are better if left to sit on the stove for hours on end.  I'm still learning that I don't want to let everything else "meld" like I do with beans.

Still, it was fine yesterday and unedible today.  Sometimes meat is just a complete turn-off for me.  Maybe I'm just having one of those days.

I agree with the first part of what dove said.  100 calories one way or another can be expected.  Notice that NOTHING was right on.  This is life, not a science lab, and real cooks rarely measure.  (and yes, you do find a lot of real cooks in places like Chili's -- it's not their top choice, but a job's a job, after all).

While I was upset looking at this at first, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it's just sensationalist media.  One of those foods was over the calories stated by six calories, yet it still was red and bolded.

As far as the items that are more than 100 calories off... those could be a problem.  But they are usually caused by employees not following policy -- grilling the chicken in oil, for example.  Why would an employee do that?  Simply because it's VERY HARD to make a decent product when you are cooking without oil, especially at the speed a line cook has to produce an entree.

Eating in is no more exact than eating out, with the exception that you KNOW what you put on your chicken breast.  But I dump oil in the pot when I saute veggies.  I don't measure, although I do have a decent idea of what a tablespoon looks like.  I was raised by a chef and have formal cooking training.  It's blasphemy to use a measuring utensil.

I think that what it comes down to is this: You will lose weight if you are trying.  Eating a slightly larger portion than the one used for the nutrition on the website isn't going to mess you up in the long run.  Eating a little more oil isn't going to kill you.  The media is desperate to make you THINK it is, though, because stuff that kills people SELLS.  Just keep that in mind!

Foods Cherry Season Again!! May 19 2008

My dad has a SOUR cherry tree in his yard that produces WAY more than my entire family can eat.  And this year I'm moving closer to him so I'll get a whole bunch.

Unfortunately, I CAN'T eat sour cherries plain.  They are just TOOOOOOOO sour!  Last year we boiled them with sugar until they were a thick sauce and ate them on ice cream and, strained, mixed with vodka as a cocktail.  Plus we made jam.  It was very very good, but far from low cal.  :(  I wonder how we could prepare them this year so that they are lower calorie?

Using an adjusted body weight, I calculated your BMR to be about 1500 calories a day. That would be the lowest you should go. Even if you are ABLE to eat less than that, it's not a good idea to do it on a regular basis.

When you up your calorie intake and can't really exercise... you ARE going to see a reduction in your weight loss at first. But the higher calories will help you maintain your muscle mass (you don't want to be losing muscle instead of fat, even if it DOES mean that the scale would go down!) and stay healthy while losing the weight.  And the plateau will end!

It may help if you were to look at this period of time as a "getting healthy," rather than "losing weight." If your goal is not to lose as much weight as quickly as you can but instead to clean up your eating habits and start exercising, then getting through the plateaus will be easier.

Also, the closer you get to a healthy weight, the harder it gets to LOSE weight. However, the benefits start showing sooner! For example, the difference in sizes gets closer. It may be 40lbs between a 26 and a 24, but only 10lbs between a 12 and a 10, for example (of course, every person is different, but you get the idea). That's probably not the slowdown you are seeing now, but just keep it in mind!

Good luck! See if you can find some friends to lose weight with you, and log every day at first to make sure you are getting 1500 calories! You can do it. :3

Wow, you've lost 45 lbs in the last 3 1/2 months!  That's fantastic!  I would celebrate that progress that you'd made -- that's a lot of weight you aren't carrying around any more.

What is your gender, height, and age?  If you give me that information, then I can get you a guess as to what you burn as your BMR (resting metabolic rate -- how much you burn just maintaining your organs and muscle, even if you aren't moving).  The BMR is your lowest you should go to keep losing weight.

You might see a plateau as your body gets its metabolism back on track, but you should start losing after that.

A plateau really isn't the end of the world, anyways.  Everyone sees them and yes, they can be frustrating, but just remember all the progress you've seen so far and keep that in mind.  :)

You're right -- it's not that important to watch sodium unless you have HBP or renal insufficiency or sodium sensitivity.  Quite a few people do fall into one of those categories, though, and I think that's why the website puts such an emphasis on it.  If you aren't worried about your sodium intake, then don't pay attention to sodium content.

Others encourage people to eat lower sodium because packaged foods are high in sodium, and they are encouraging people to eat fewer packaged foods.  My opinion is that if the food is healthy enough other than the sodium content, then who cares about the salt?  Some people don't have the time or desire to make all their own foods.

Me, I've tried to reduce my sodium consumption a little bit, but only because I'm a bit of a salt fiend.  I have no real health reason to watch it.

If you're going to drink an alcoholic beverage that is like a milkshake you really don't want to kow how many calories are in it, but you can find a guide for most common drinks, Daiquiri, Margarita, etc. online. Don't you really want to know how many calories are in a Cookie Dough Blizzard when you absolutely have to have one?

Actually, yes.

My weakness being Frostys, Frappacinos, cookies, and cakes... I do want to know how many calories are in them.  Because sometimes they surprise me, and I usually try to work them into my daily calories by getting a small one.

The particular time that made me post this thread was when we went out to Pizzeria Uno's for my friend's 21st birthday.  I saved calories ALL day and had quite a few for dinner.  I checked the website and picked out the foods I was eating beforehand (noticing then that the alcoholic beverages didn't have nutrition.)  I split an entree and only used about 350 calories.  I probably HAD the calories for the drink!  But I have no way of knowing, because labeling isn't required on alcohol.

I didn't want to drink anything really hard, as it was a weeknight and I had work the next morning.  But I wanted a celebratory drink, something SPECIAL.  And it probably would have fit into my calories.

This is why I got so frustrated!

u know, I've been thinking about this. and, I know its not an effective technique when you have business dinners or go out, but how about having a fun party with 'everybody' (that likes the fun milky drinks) and make them at home. You won't be able to avoid the calories in the alcohol, but you can use ice chunks, skim milk or vanilla soymilk, and add your own real fruit like strawberries, cherries, blueberries, or whatever then mix it all up in a good blender. don't add any extra sugar (or maybe splenda if your into it) and you can mos def keep your calories in check and still have the fun milkshaky drink.

plus, you won't have to drive home!! :)

I live right outside of Washington DC so we usually Metro around anyways when we plan on drinking.  XD  Another plus for public transportation!

Yeah, I love mixing my own drinks at home!  Tequila sunrises are my favorite -- simple, not TOO bad for you, and so so so impressive-looking!

Although I still wish that they required alcoholic beverages to have nutrition info!

My boyfriend makes a tex-mex marinated salad with tomatoes, corn, black beans, and edamame marinated in vinegar, sugar, lots of cumin and chili powder and garlic.  It's quite good, high in protein with decent fiber, and holds pretty well, especially in a cooler lunchbox.

And the old classic pbj is vegetarian and holds just fine, too!  Pack some carrot and celery sticks and an apple and you've got a great meal.

Before we started really watching what we ate, my boyfriend would bake a loaf every other day.  Problem is, we could (and often would) eat the entire loaf that day.  So we don't do it so much anymore.

He got an excellent bread machine recipe book that we make stuff out of.  We make a whole wheat challah that's really awesome.  We've also made pizza dough and naan and all sorts of other things and banana bread with yeast.  I love that book!

One of my only complaints is that we can never get pizza crust flat enough and it ends up being more like foccacia with stuff on top.  Which is good in it's own right... but not pizza.

I just wish I could control myself around bread.  :c  It's one of my VERY favorite foods and I could eat half a loaf in a sitting without even thinking about it.

Thanks for all the advice, guys!

Amen!

I'm of the generation that if I can't find their website, I don't call that company!  This isn't as relevant for restaurants, but lots of other businesses don't have any sort of website, either.  Even a crappy one is better than nothing.  If you have a crappy website, at least I know that your business exists!

I've been working for a construction subcontractor as a secretary and have learned that the construction trade is REALLY behind the times on this one.  Even the major, multi-national companies will have something that looks like someone pulled it together in an afternoon.

Or just eat them like candy... Innocent

I just posted this in another thread, but I thought you might like my take one this.  :)

Some things that helped me:

I don't like very cold water; I prefer it room temperature.  Other people are the exact opposite.  Try drinking water at different temperatures to find one that you like.

If I keep a bottle of water on my desk at work, I sip away at it all day and end up drinking around two BIG bottles (32 oz) a day, just at work.  If I had to get up every time I wanted a drink, you can bet that I wouldn't drink as much.

I'm not fond of tap water.  I've discovered I drink less if my glass is full of tap water instead of bottled water -- I fill up my water bottle at the water cooler while at work (Deer Park).  I'm looking into options that would let me get filtered water at home without buying packs and packs of bottled water, which is what I was doing.  But if the bottled water is what you like to drink, it's a whole lot better than soda!  I found it to be a good first step.

Weight Loss scared of losing weight? May 06 2008

My fiance and I have a philosophy: set your goal weight high, and see what you feel like when you get there! If you think you would like to see a few more pounds off, then set a new goal and keep chugging.

I'm 5'7" too, and am currently maintaining for a week to a month at 159 (it's going to be a very stressful month!). I started around 175 and told myself that I'd see what I felt like when I reached 150. Already I feel much better at 159 than I did at 175, but I know that I still want to lose weight. My goal is 150. When I get there, we'll see how I feel.

My fiance had been obese his entire life (280lbs, 6' tall), so when he first started losing weight he set his goal at 220 -- he felt like he'd be too skinny at anything lower!  He's currently at 195 and feels like he's still got another 15-20 pounds to go.  He looks FANTASTIC -- not fat any more by a long shot!  But still a little pudgy.  He's taken it very slow (it's taken him about 3-4 years to lose all that weight) and that's given him time to get comfortable in his new body.

Just out of curiousity, what size are you? I'm pear shaped and wear a M shirt and a 12-14 pants. I'd love to get down to a true 12 (or maybe even a 10!) but it may NEVER happen because of how stubborn my thighs are!
