| Weight Loss | BMI seems totally ridiculous.... | Feb 29 2008 15:11 (UTC) |

| I've found the BMI to be a pretty poor measurement tool. It says I'm in the mid to low end of my weight for height, but I'm still borderline obese according to the body fat %. Just take it as a guideline and try to get to a weight you're comfortable with, or if it's something that really concerns you talk to a health professional about what is healthy for you. | |||

I don't know about cellulite but I just finished my tom and I lost a solid inch off of my thighs, so yeah, the increased size can definately be water weight and as every woman has experienced, water weight can just jump on in a day or so. Dunno about long term effects but it's certainately not fat over night. |

I feel it's up to the parent to decide how to discipline their child BUT make sure you're not using antibacterial soaps that include triclosan. They've just begun the effects it has studying it but so far it doesn't look too great- some research has indicated that triclosan can mimic hormones and do really frigged up things to you, so ingesting even a little is probably not a good idea. So far they've done the study only on frogs, but there's a pretty good chance it effect humans too since the way the hormones are used in both organisms. And not even trace amounts are okay, "the study found that as little as one-millionth of a gram per litre of triclosan interferes with thyroid hormones and their ability to direct the genes responsible for frog metamorphosis." ((btw this stuff is sometimes in toothpaste too, ick)) note- edited for tired typing (the first version was less lucid) |

| Renee, I don't know if part of that last post was aimed at me-- I know that anorexia is as much a mental problem as it is physical, however I do feel that if you are harming yourself physically through your eating habits, that it would be a form of disordered eating. Though obviously not anorexia- because some of the psychological symptoms are missing. Perhaps there ought to be another kind of eating disorder defined which shares the physical symptoms -weight loss, obsession with calories etc.- with anorexia but which has a different set of psychological symptoms. Instead of lack of emotional control, the cause here would be insecurity and the need for validation. I guess what I was trying to get across is that even if these girls are not anorexic, they should not just be criticized and set aside. They're still doing lasting harm to themselves. And I'm arguing that anyone who does intentional, lasting damage to themselves is disordered. Or that there is something else wrong, perhaps in their culture, which urges them to do this, maybe by altering their body image. | |||

I understand what you're saying about girls who are "anorexic for a week" but many of these posters are complaining about girls who, they admit, look sickly and skeletal. If they look that way, are honestly drastically underweight, and keep posting threads about how they haven't menstruated in months I find it hard to believe that it's a harmless bid for attention. I think perhaps we're talking about different situations, with different sorts of girls. Either way I take the general inclination to want to be anorexic and to want people to think that they are mentally ill is a negative sign, even if they aren't successfully hurting themselves. If they're not crazy then the culture in which they live must be. These would be the other issues you referred to, and was exactly what I was talking about, if they try and do it for a week to be cool, that's messed up. If they actually starve themselves to this point for compliments, that sounds like an eating disorder to me-- though perhaps not anorexia (because they do not exhibit the psychological or sociological symptoms associated with it) still it seems clear there is something disordered about their self perception and their eating habits if they're intentionally causing themselves harm. |

I do Today I had 1 cup cereal for breakfast, a banana and slice of pizza for lunch and a tomato sandwich for supper. Perfect, not the healthiest day but around 1200. Oh, and then the cravings hit. I had 8 pieces of chocolate, vanilla ice cream, pizza (again!) crackers, chips, cheese and pepperoni. Oh and trail mix. Ouch. At least I moderated portions, I figured I'd cut my cravings off at the pass and have sample sizes of everything I wanted (except the chocolate, that was out of control). It sure was tasty though... and now I'm oddly craving pickle chips. |

Uh, I understand that eating disorders are a very, very serious thing. And so do all of you I'm sure. Not eating does horrible things to your body, and to your mind, and with all of the obsessing and self loathing that must be attached to such a life style must be unbearable. I've seen the pictures too, and it's a scary thing, especially since the people are not deprived by circumstance, they do it to themselves. I'm somewhat surprised then, that I seem to be the only person pondering these two questions: If obsessing over your weight, what you eat, hating the way you look, and starving yourself isn't a "genuine" eating disorder, just a cry for attention, then what is "genuine" anorexia and how is it more harmful? And also, if these girls are willing to do this to themselves, genuinely starve themselves in this hurtful and hateful way simply for the validation, attention or pity of strangers, just how is this normal or healthy? It's not "mental illness"? These girls are intentionally hurting themselves-- some will die, some will never have children, some will lose massive amounts of bone, it might not be "real" anorexia but I promise it will have real consequences, and they're doing this so that some stranger on the web will tell them they're "too skinny". You may disagree, but I think that a willingness, or in this case and eagerness, to do oneself harm is a sign of some kind of disorder, I especially if they're willing to do it for the validation of strangers. |

| I'd hate to say I'm trying to look like miss 2 here, but I'd definately love to be skinny. Not that skinny of course but I'd rather be underweight than look like I do now, and I don't/ wont ever have the curves for lady 1. I guess the biggest appeal for me for wanting to be thin is looking "right", I'll never be all sexy and curvy but if I lose enough I can look skinny. Which is at least a look, right now I look lumpy... | |||

I'm pretty ashamed to post that I've gained two pounds. I'm almost back to where I started. I went on vacation for a week and during that time I ended up going from 1200 calories a day to around 2400 calories a day. The day I left, I ate a whole pizza Do you guys think it's advisable to try and "double up" to catch up? Normally I aim to lose a pound a week but if I added another half hour of exercise and made sure I made the most of it, I could go from a 500 to a 1000 deficit. If I did do that I think I'd have to wait a week, my body is pretty much in shock, my mind too. On top of randomly doubling my exercise habits and eating habits, I'm so jet lagged, I switched timezones twice this week, and got about 8 collective hours of sleep in the past three days. For added pleasure next week is daylight savings time, so I lose another hour (making 6 am 2am). Do you think exercising will make the transition better, I'm so tired I thought I'd take it really light this week but would that just make things worse (and lose muscles?) |

I would love to fill anything out, right now I can't even fill out my bra. To be honest, if I could put some of my thighs where my breasts ought to be I wouldn't be trying to lose weight.
| Weight Loss | Newbie with a question. | Feb 20 2008 22:54 (UTC) |

| The "total estimate" is how much, at your weight and hight, age, and activity level your body should burn on it's own. To lose weight, you want the burn meter (the estimate plus exercise) to be higher than the amount you eat (eat meter). If it's 500 calories higher you're losing about 1 pound a week, if it's 1000 higher you're losing about two. It's not generally healthy to eat less than 1200 for women and 1500 for men or to have your burn meter be any more than 1000 over. In short the "total estimate" is what your body burns by just doing what you do and that, plus any extra exercise, is what your burn meter should show at the end of the day. | |||
| Weight Loss | why is it harder to lose when your weight is lower? | Feb 20 2008 22:40 (UTC) |
2 |
| One thing to keep in mind, when you're losing weight, is that the more you lose, the less you need to eat. For example, at 5'2" and 135, 20 years, and moderately active you need 2198ish calories, But at 5'2" and 115, 20 years and moderately active you need 2063. That's more than 100 calories less a day, so your nice 500 calorie deficit has turned into a 400 calorie deficit, at least according to the calorie counter I found... | |||

| Gah! Talk about indulgence. I'm visiting my boyfriend in California and we've eaten out almost every day, which results in me eating about 600-700 calories more than I ought to :( Especially since the time difference means that I'm eating three hours later than I should and am starving. Fortunately he has a gym and with the exercise I've been hitting around my maintenance level, now I just gotta get back on track... | |||

that's pretty crazy. And wrong, very, very wrong. People who have gastric bypass have to be very, very, careful about what they eat. My ex's mom had it and she had to make every bite count, cheeseburger, please, more like liquefied protein with vitamin supplements. If she didn't get the perfect amount of everything her hair would fall out. The good news is that that diet is so ridiculous that it would be hard for anyone to stick to it for long enough to kill themselves. |

| I read an article a while back in a magazine that compared Chinese food in terms of calories, I don't have it any more but I remember that the general gist was nothing breaded, nothing fried and it's not too terrible. Probably chicken or shrimp is the best, since those tend to be low cal, as long as they aren't covered in butter/oil/deep fried it shouldn't be too bad... | |||

I'm hoping to get down to a five, someday, maybe 108 will do it (if they're really big pounds)). Maybe toning will do it, I hit 110 the easy way last time (a month and a half of the intestinal flu) so hopefully exercise will make the difference.

| I try to drink a lot of water, especially when I exercise, because it helps keep me feeling full. I keep a count down list in my day planner so that I can actually see my weight going down every week. I filled in approximately what I should weigh each week from February until May (when I'll meet my goal), I know if I lazy out of this I'll have to see, every week, where I would have been if I hadn't. I'm also using clothing as a motivator, I've decided I'm not allowed to get any new clothes (even though mine are old and quite worn) until I hit my goal weight, every time I see a cute new something it reminds me (this is a really good one for me because I work in a clothing store.) Uh, unfortunately most of my motivators are negative, so I wont list those, but the ones above help too. | |||

my goodness, my scales (I have two) are ancient, one is an old, old, doctor's scale that you zero by hand, not the most accurate, and the other only has one fluctuates pretty badly--depending on how you stand on it can add or subtract two pounds. So, to everyone with the wicked nice scales, where did you find them, and were they worth buying? |

Man, today is not a good diet day. Tuesdays are my earliest days, so I didn't get to the gym and I feel all gross because of it. I'm also retaining water (I hope) for some reason, and yet again my pants don't fit! Just when they were starting to loosen! It doesn't seem like I've gained actual weight though, doesn't make any sense-- maybe my thighs inflate? I'm also pretty bummed that I've been using the wrong program to tone my thighs (the weight loss setting on the elliptical doesn't do inner thighs, as i discovered Monday-- that's my trouble zone too) Overall don't feel like I'm doing enough. I feel like I ought to be eating pocket lint and running for hours to lose weight, this feels normal and I get paranoid and count my calories repeatedly because I don't feel hungry like I ought to if I'm "dieting". This fat, bloated feeling isn't helping at all, it feels like someone injected crisco into to my thighs and stomach. It might be salt-- I eat a ton of salt, salted, but that's not something I can change, my all time high blood pressure was 90/60 so I'm pretty sure I need the sodium to keep my blood pumping. I don't get this, I'm eating right, exercising and losing weight, so everything should be wonderful. But I feel gross and look exactly the same! Bah! I've lost about 14 pounds since January-- 5-7 on this site and I look exactly as I did before! I took pictures, I compared them, nothing has changed. |

| Weight Loss | How long does it take for you body to adjust to drinking water? | Feb 13 2008 03:13 (UTC) |
10 |
Umm, I think the water flushing water out has more to do with sodium intake than anything. If you've had too much salt that can make you retain water and the best way to get rid of that is by flushing the salt water solution out. (I'm going on biology not nutrition but the body is not a petri dish so I might be getting this wrong) Drinking extra water might flush the salt out, if that's your problem but I don't know what it will do to the water (probably nothing). If you want to know how much water you need I would refer you to the sticky up top, I'm guessing they've covered this. I wouldn't worry about the poundage though, it's not fat it's good old H2O and it's perfectly natural for your weight to fluctuate some with the amount of water and food you've got sitting in your stomach (some people seem so stunned to find they gain weight right after they eat-- it's not fat, it's your sandwich it has mass and it hasn't gone anywhere yet). If the weight hasn't gone down that's either because you keep drinking water at a continual weight (yes, you've flushed out the 32 oz but didn't you use another 32 oz to do that?) or it could be from you're TOTM, girls tend to gain a bit of water weight before-- two pounds sounds about right for that too. |

| Weight Loss | How long does it take for you body to adjust to drinking water? | Feb 12 2008 21:37 (UTC) |
14 |
| er, yeah, that's the water. 16 oz of water equals one pounds so it's likely you gained those two pounds from drinking. It should pass through relatively quickly though, unless maybe you're dehydrated? Though you do get a lot of water from the food you eat so you don't have to drink 8 glasses a day. Every time someone mentions putting on weight quickly on these forums people tend to say watch your sodium intake, because that can cause water retention. Or maybe you needed the water and are using it? | |||
