oroweat makes a 40 cal/slice whole wheat bread without anything funky in it (i think)... you could see if its available to you. otherwise, find something to distract yourself from the bread. you can't just let yourself eat it because you want it - you don't NEED those 7 slices of bread every night. read a book, watch a movie, surf the web, clean, paint your fingernails.... do something productive that doesn't involve eating. |

| Foods | why do we all love food surveys so much? | Oct 11 2008 20:55 (UTC) |

i think we love foods surveys because.... a) they pass the time when we're bored b) reading other people's gives us food ideas c) we get to talk about ourselves so here i go.... 1) last thing you ate: some candy corn last night 2) last thing you drank: water. 3) the next thing you're going to eat: when my mom gets back i'm making waffles for breakfast and i'm going to eat them with raspberries and powdered sugar.... she just walked in the door! 4) the next thing you're going to drink: water 5) are you craving anything right now?: waffles! and water because i'm sick and unbelievably dehydrated 6) what's your favorite pie flavour?: that's hard.... i love pumpkin pie, berry pie, banana creme pie, and chocolate pecan pie (possibly the naughtiest of all pies...) 7) name a food you're tired of: soup 8) name a food you hate: there are very few and i can't think of any at the moment. 9) what's your favorite meal of the day?: i like breakfast and cooking dinner 10) what's your favorite vegetable?: broccoli! and sweetpotato.... |

a more accurate way to measure your sweet potato without a digital scale would be to cut it up into chunks and toss it in a measuring cup. |

friend 1 female, 5" 1', around 100 pounds, inactive she usually has a sandwich, a dannon yogurt, sometimes sf pudding, maybe a piece of fruit, chips... and honestly, she's not anorexic but she isn't active nd eats very little. she's super petite. friend 2 female, 5'7", probably 130-140 pounds, inactive she usually eats a deli sandwhich on sourdough or white bread (and picks off the cheese), some fruit, veggies, and chips or cookies friend number 3 female, 5' 3", 150-160 pounds, swimmer some of the things she eats... i hate feeling judgemental but goodness! bagels with tons of cream cheese or super peautbuttery sandwiches on white bread or soup for an entree, then she always has a billion bars in case she wants a snack and she usually brings veggies and ranch, and huge bags of trail mix (like probably 100 calories worth), and like 6 or 8 cookies, and yogurt. her mother is obese, and she packs her lunches. sometimes i really want to inform her... but i restrain myself... |

they also say that only 10% of your daily calories should come from fat. that makes me seriously question the credibility of this article... |

| Weight Gain | i don't understand! | Sep 05 2008 04:03 (UTC) |
|
yeah... the reason i posted here is because i'm really not interested in gaining weight. at all. i thought i would be mentally okay with it, but it scares me. i don't want to lose weight, but i want to maintain. because of this, i've been trying to eat only what i'm burning off, not more. obviously i'm failing at this... which doesn't make sense to me, seeing as i'm really not eating that much. *sigh* |

i love spicy and sweet (not necessarily together, though.) I love spicy foods - one of my favorites is to eat jalapenos raw or (even better) soaked in lime juice and salt. but i always like to have something sweet at the end of a meal - usually a piece of fruit or some yogurt. |

| Weight Loss | How big is your lunch??? | Aug 06 2008 22:17 (UTC) |

my lunches always end up between 400 and 500 calories. I always eat something from every food group at lunch. so for instance, i'll have a grain (bread, english muffin, half a bagel, crackers), a protein (usually deli slices or nut butter), a serving of fruit, a low fat dairy product, and assorted veggies (often with hummus for dipping.) and i always find myself, as i said, between 400 and 500 calories. |

| Young Calorie Counters | i doubt i'm burning this many calories just by being a teen... | Jul 28 2008 22:27 (UTC) |

i don't think it's unreasonable. we're teens. we're growing. our metabolisms are at their peak. we NEED lots of calories to help fuel our daily activities. alexmp911 - you're fairly active, and, being that you're a sixteen year old guy, you probably require between 2500 and 3000 calories a day. It all depends on your metabolism and your lifestyle. edit: grammar error |

i'm trying to maintain my weight, but we have a really crappy dial scale that isn't help at all. i'll step on it and weight 116, then it'll come out a little below zero, so i'll re-adjust it and step on again and it'll say 120 and fall right to zero, and then i'll step on it AGAIN and it'll say 115... and come straight back to zero. okay, so i weigh between 115 and 120 pounds??? what the heck. |

| The Lounge | what did you learn about nutrition in school? | Jul 28 2008 19:43 (UTC) |
6 |
i took a required semester of health as a freshman, and we did a week or two of nutrition. we had to write down everything we ate for three days, put it all into fitday along with all of our activity, and then look at our diets according to the food pyramid standards. we also had to go to mypyramid.gov and create a plan for ourselves. this was the first i had REALLY looked at health and my dietary needs - i didn't even know what a calorie was until seventh grade, when i began counting them and trying to lose weight unhealthily. that only lasted a year, but i didn't know much about what i needed diet wise, besides the basic 6-11 servings of grain, 2-3 servings of dairy, etc. i don't ever remember learning about the food pyramid in elementary school, and i remember grade school really well. i do remember that it posted in the gynasium, though. also, i suspect that everyone had significantly low intakes compared to what they really were. i've looked at my log now that i know more about nutrition, and i realize that the two glasses of milk that i used to drink a day weren't 8 oz. i probably drank 2 1/2-3 cups of milk a day between those two glasses. and i logged an ounce of doritos that was probably 2 or 3. i used to take big plates of doritos (or whatever other chips were around the house) and snack on them. plus, i remember that one of the nights i was supposed to be loggin my intake, i went to a concert where there were refreshments by donation, and i ate 5 or 6 cookies. hehe..... needless to say, those didn't show up on my log. so though we learned about nutrition, we weren't really taught portion sizes. |

| Weight Gain | "You're So Skinny." | Jul 28 2008 06:18 (UTC) |

i had this problem today - it's summer, and i've lost quite a bit of weight since january (30-35 lbs), and i saw a lot of people who i hadn't seen me in a while. i had a jacket on, but i took it off, and one of my friends was like "omigosh! where'd you go?" and then there was a little girl i know, who was like "you look way skinnier!" and i kind of awkwardly said "well, i am....." and then she kept saying it over and over, and THEN after i put my jacket back on i went to go stand in a circle with some of my friends and one of them was like "did you get skinnier again?"m all of this happened, no joke, within a span of 10 minutes yeah, i know i'm skinny. must you point it out every 10 seconds? at first, i kind of liked the attention i got for losing weight, but this is ridiculous. i'm dreading going back to school - everyone's going to think i have and eating disorder or something. |

really really really cheesy quesadillas yeah, i haven't eaten one of those in a LONG time i'm with you, ericainrecovery, about the melted cheese thing. i know it sounds disgusting, but osmetimes i used to melt cheese on a plate and eat it with a fork. i wonder if it would deplete some of the calories if you blotted off the cheese-grease with a napkin.... hmm..... |

| Foods | Mexican Restaurant Eating Tips | Jul 25 2008 02:20 (UTC) |

avoid: anything fried (i.e. chips, hard taco shells, tostadas, flautas, taquitos) go easy on: sour cream, cheese, guacamole tortillas aren't horrible for you, just don't overdo it - and as the above poster mentioned, corn tortillas are better than flour (corn tortillas are prepared without any added oil, unlike flour tortillas which traditionally are prepared with lard.) fajitas would be a good choice - you don't need to completely ditch the meat either - grilled chicken would be a fine choice, as would seafood, if available. beans, though they are healthy, are almost always served refried in mexican restaraunts, which means lots of oil. black bean soup, however, would be a good choice. soft tacos wouldn't be bad either - two filled with lots of veggies and a little meat would work well. quesadillas are probably not a good idea, nor are enchiladas (often made with lots of cheese and sometimes a cream sauce.) oh, and don't limit yourself salsa-wise - you can't beat less than 10 calories for 2 tbsp!

i often snack on whole wheat crackers and deli meat slices (watch the sodium thought) string cheese is good i second the bars - i LOVE bars. my favorites are luna bars (as earlier mentioned), larabars (all natural raw fruit and nut bars), and fiberone bars (the peanut butter ones are SOOOO good!) sometimes i snack on beans - either out of the can or refired, because i'm weird like that half a pita stuffed with a little hummus and a pile of veggies is super filling sometimes i'll eat a handful of cereal for a snack smoothies are good too - fruit, a little yogurt/milk a blender, and you have a yummy treat hope those are some good ideas for you |

mrs. dagle: i'm so sorry you feel attacked about the canola oil thing! i didn't mean to draw attention to it: it was just something i had never heard before and was curious as to why you would avoid it (and if i should, because we use it for our cooking oil....) also, i had heard that it was a good source of omega-3's, so that made me more curious. but yeah, you're right, it's definitely not hurting anyone, and i'm sorry if i drew negative attention to it. |

| Recipes | Let's make a list of smoothie ideas. *challenge -- lowest cal!!!* | Jul 23 2008 08:49 (UTC) |
|
i ate this the other day, and it was delicious: 1 cup of milk (i used 2%, but i'm sure you could use skim) 1 banana 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder the whole thing comes to 230 cals (190 with skim)- very reasonable, i think, for a lot of smoothie. the natural sugar in the banana is sweet enough for this smoothie - no added sugar needed! |
