It sounds like you are good to be rid of him! It is always a good time to start working out and getting in shape - but I wouldn't do it on his account! HE definitely doesn't deserve any effort at all. Do it for you! You deserve to be healthy and happy with yourself. When I moved a year ago, I started working out a lot too, mostly because I didn't know anybody and had more free time than usual. Wishing you the best! Message me anytime! |

gi-jane - you always inspire me, you're quote is so true. I don't know that I am as busy as you - but here is how I do it. As a result of "streamlining" the process for awhile, I have been able to fit back in a lot of my favorite hobbies ect that went by the wayside.
Have you ever heard the quote - I think it is "exercise doesn't take time out of your life, it puts life into your time". You can do it! |

My cat always follows me around all the time. It is EXTREMELY annoying - plus I am always stepping on him since he is underfoot which caused him to screech or bite me, but he doesn't stop following me. He obviously adores me, and will stare at me and purr - so I admit that I am very fond of him despite his obnoxious habits. |

| Motivation | Just feel soooo ugly and fat! | Dec 03 2008 17:17 (UTC) |

You are not ugly and fat! You are probably much prettier and fitter than you give yourself credit for. Don't worry, you will look gorgeous in your wedding dress. I tried to lose weight for the wedding and it just didn't work with all the stress. As soon as I was married everything worked much easier - so don't be too hard on yourself now. Dieting / Food / support is a sensitive issue and sadly many people break up over it. Don't overreact. You should let him know how you feel and that you would like him to be more supportive, but don't expect him to change overnight. He obviously has very strong feelings about health vs flavor and loves to cook, there is nothing wrong with that, just challenging for you. Eventually you should be able to teach him that it's not true - healthy food can be just as flavorful as non. One trick I do that helps is I take 1/2 of the portion my husband makes for me, save it for the next day and fill the rest of my plate with fruit (if it's breakfast) or veggies. This seems to be the perfect solution so that I can eat healthy while he still feels valued for his cooking and helping out. Also, maybe you can get him to add the butter/cream last and serve you before adding it. I have my husband add sausage to the eggs last so that I can take just some. Good luck!

I like the comforting theory (I don't know if it's true) that weight can be taken off in a third of the time it took to put on - therefore if I gained it fast, I can lose it fast. Good luck getting it right back off and more! You can do it!

1) I am a 27 year old engineer living in Washington. I am female, married for 1 year and have no kids yet. 2) After getting married and getting settled in washington I joined a gym and started watching my diet (again). I gained a lot of weight in the first few years of college (132 to 195) and have spent the years since trying to get it back off. My motivation is to get down to a "low health risk" weight and develop a healthy lifestyle and healthy relationship with food so that I can pass my good habits on to my future children. |

I particularly like this statement, “we say that the psychiatric symptoms – such as anxiety, depression and obsessional behaviour – are the consequences of the distorted eating rather than the cause”. I'm skeptical that it works for everybody. Surely there are more reasons for eating poorly than ignorance and body chemistry? I was insulted at first - I've been told many times that I'm fat because I eat too much (and I'm sure the reverse is true for anorexics), and it trivializes the fact that it is HARD to follow a "proper diet" - there are tons of emotions and social reasons there. However, the more I thought about it, there could be some truth. The more I don't overeat, the less I want to; the more I follow a proper diet the easier it gets. So I guess what to do is jump right in with a proper diet - and eventually your emotions will catch up.

I am actually doing great, thanks for asking. I had such a setback with october parties, but I am working out again and controlling myself on the weekends. I am not looking forward to thanksgiving and december temptation wise! I don't even plan to resist everything - but I would like to stay in maintenance at least.

Are you guys ready for the weekend? I have a treat in mind - there is a sewing fair in town saturday. Also, if we decide to go bowling saturday night, it can count as a situation where I normally drink. I still need to plan something social that doesn't involve food - it seems like EVERYTHING involves food. First, I thought of bowling, then remembered all the yummy apetizers, food and alcohol. I am going to church sunday, but even there they sell donuts and lattes and everybody gets them. I'll plan to get a sugar free latte and it will be awesome - however it doesn't count as not involving food. We are going to Costco saturday, but that involves buying food, free samples, and trying to resist the food stand on the way out. Looks like there will be lots of challenges (as usual) this weekend! Good luck everybody! |

I'm sorry about your family - that is really hard. People are very insecure when it comes to other's sucess. Be sure to encourage them and support them whenever you can. My strategy is to stop mentioning my weight or weight loss. I turn down the cupcake because I "already ate", or "I'll have one later" instead of because I am dieting. Eventually they will forget to be resentful and accept the new you. |

Not giving it enough time - I see this all the time. After 1 week of eating or working out a certain way, people immediately decide they aren't seeing the results they expected, so they conclude it's not working and give up. Unless you lose a lot of water the first week, you may not see results right away, that's just the way it is.

My friend started it, so I borrowed the book and read through it, but not in depth. Also, I looked through the recipe book. I also get, and read, Jillian Micheal's newsletter every day. From what I've read, I'm impressed. It looked to be a very sound plan, based on solid nutritional principles and I didn't see any red flags. I enjoyed the books and the newsletter, they have a very supportive and inspirational attitude. I feel like the focus is on "You can do it!" rather than "Our system works".

| Motivation | How to stop at my calorie level, instead of eating more and more. | Nov 11 2008 21:31 (UTC) |
2 |
I think I understand. Whenever I have a large deficit planned I seem to know subconsciously that I have "wiggle" room and then I end up eating all sorts of extras (more than I realized) and wiping my deficit out altogether. What helped a lot is now I log exactly my BMR in the morning - I keep adding healthy foods and snacks until I reach my BMR. This way as I go about my day I know that there are no "extra" calories hanging around - this seems to help. Since you are not trying to lose weight, I suggest logging all your food and exercise planned in the morning - keep adding healthy snacks or raising portions until your deficit is close to zero. This should help you spread your calories throughout the day, instead of just loading up on junk food after dinner. |

cellar-door - I totally drink when I am nervous too! It sucks. Hi all! I did so great this weekend, I am so proud of myself. Actually, I ate close to maintenance every day, but I logged everything and that is great for me. Motto #1: I went to TWO bars friday night, with tons of people I didn't really know and I drank just one beer. I had a great time, I don't think anybody even noticed that I wasn't drunk like them. Motto #2: I played frisbee golf with my husband. Motto #3: We went to IHOP and I really wanted a cheeseburger. Turned out it wasn't very good. I ordered a side salad, ate that, half my burger and half my onion rings. I felt I did pretty good. Motto #4: I played sims, it was fun.

It is definitely a solution to not participate in situations that are challenging. The real challenge, and I believe you can do it!, is to practice going out and clubbing with your friends, but being DD and having fun without a lot of alcohol. That is my goal for myself anyway! I don't want to sit at home just because I am dieting!

Members so far for this weekend:
Let's do this! Alcohol: For this weekend, there are no parties or social events to worry about, but we did just buy the yummiest hard cider in the world so that will be a challenge. Treat: My treat this weekend is going to be 1 hour playing "The Sims" guilt free. Social: I want to go hiking or play frisbee golf with Josh, but it is supposed to rain so I still have to think of something.

I would be jealous too. I would probably not be a happy person at that competition. Your sister sounds nice, sounds like she is not doing it on purpose. Congratulations on the weight you've lost. I'm in the last 15-20 pounds too and it is agony. I feel the same way - that I've made leaps and bounds in improvements, and I know I'm not perfect but I struggle nonetheless.

I'd tell myself that you're not actually fat - that the scrawny girls I compared myself to were not as pretty as I thought and were really just underdeveloped. If thinking about something causes you to be depressed or unhappy or feel even worse about yourself, then DON'T THINK ABOUT IT! It's not your job to solve all the world's problems, it is not "deeper" to be unhappy. Just because you are different doesn't mean that it matters! You have lots of similarities with people if you look for them. It wouldn't kill you to be friendly! You spend so much time expecting people to reject you - really, most people are decent people and they probably won't mind if you talk to them. Assume the best from people. |

It sounds like your trainer has very aggressive goals for you - and 1300 calories is probably the bare minimum you should be eating. 1300 calories seems to be the default amount that trainers recommend for all women of any size and I find the calorie count tools much more accurate. You will get much farther on 1600 calories a day. Drinking on a weight loss plan is tricky, but it's good that you are honest with yourself. Drinking is very damaging to your body - but here are some tips on how to have the most fun while mitigating some of the damage.
I have never had any luck trying to "make up" for any alcohol calories by eating less that day. Your best bet is just to count them as "extra" calories and calculate your planned weight loss accordingly. Doing a light workout the next morning is a good idea though, it will help you recover faster. |

I have lost 42 pounds since January 2007, and 31 pounds since January 2008. I did it with a lot of hard work and a lot of plateaus. I constantly had to rework my entire plan every time it wasn't working anymore - sometimes because I stopped losing sometimes because it was too hard to follow or it didn't fit into my life. I think I owe my sucess to knowing when to back off - but never giving up. |
