Really. I'm intrigued.

How can a pitcher record a win without throwing a single pitch in a ballgame?

And where'd you get all this baseball know-how?

I used to be a Yankee fan back in the good old days of Clemens, Chuck Knoblauch (sp?), Paul O'Neill (sp?), Bernie Williams, etc. And of course Joe Torre. I'm a huge Joba fan though so I'll definitely be following the Yanks this year

I'm not really sure what you're getting at... but I was looking for an answer to the questions posed in my initial post. Why would I ask a question to which I already have the answer?

It's been answered.  Over and over.  You asked for specific, personal experience.  Given.  You got medical opinions.

You are either a tease/troll jerking us around, or you have a real difficulty getting off the pot.

So which is it?  Do you need help with your weight/unhealthy habits?  Then be open to it when you get it.  If not, please stop pestering.

I'm done unless I see something more hopeful from you.

Sweet ultimatum but in case you didn't notice, I threw up the white flag way back on Feb. 13th: "I get it. Smoking is bad. Thank you, this thread no longer needs to be continued." (post 32)

So chill the hell out. Especially nsgardener, telling me I'm a disgusting person because I don't take responsibility for my actions. What if I actually did have issues with responsibility or substance abuse. Think you just helped me out?

One last time for the record so we can all move on: I'm 19, a 6'5" 200 lb. Division I college athlete in excellent physical shape who joined this site to try to eat a little healthier and gain a little more weight. I asked the smoking question because I was curious and I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE POSTING ON ANOTHER SITE. I don't have health or weight issues. I'm not a tease/troll. I don't need/want more responses on this post. I didn't get the responses I expected, but I DID get some useful information (alle0299) so thank you. I think overall everyone freaked out way too much, and then people started attacking me like you're still doing. Excuse me, I'm being defensive. I meant that people started trying to help me recognize what they saw as possible shortcomings.

So again: I get it. Smoking is bad. Thank you, this thread no longer needs to be continued.

Peace.

Sure there are still heroes... Ken Griffey Jr - THE best "Natural" HR hitter to EVER play the game!!!

I've loved Ken Griffey Jr since I was a boy. Throughout his days in Seattle he was the best player around. When he came here to Cincinnati, his hometown, he struggled with injuries and NEVER used the sauce or HGH... Look at him now, he's still doing it the right way. He's an inspiring ball player and I'm happy he plays for my team!

Yeah he's tremendously talented but he's practically a walking advertisement FOR performance-enhancing drugs! "Take HGH so you DON'T become the next Griffey.. unspeakable potential that we'll never see because he's on the DL half the time." He's done great things, he's a HOFer, but if he got injured at a normal major league rate, he would have shattered every single hitting record by now......

Sorry I had to say it. I really respect Griffey, and you know my stance on steroids. But still. Ironic. What we need is someone of his caliber who DOESN'T get hurt all the time and doesn't use PEDs. I'm thinking A-Rod?

Don't hate on the Mets just because they are gonna kick some serious butt this year!!!!!

I'll give the mets credit for landing santana, but the phillies' young starting pitchers just matured another year, we got brad lidge, and if ryan howard strikes out even 25% less this season..... peace ny.

and i'll have it be known that roger clemens has been my idol FOREVER. i've worked with the same pitching coach he has used in the past, our mechanics and pitching styles are almost identical, and he being the best living pitching (and possibly the greatest of all time)..... yea. he was my idol. i didn't let myself think less of him during all the congressional hearings, but now.. idk what to think. maybe there are no more heroes.

The absorption rate question was really directed at the benefits/drawbacks of Gatorade vs. water. How fast it gets into your system is part of the issue, but people have been giving a lot of info on what gets into your system too, which is great. I didn't know a lot of this stuff before, so it'll help me be smarter about how I drink during games and workouts in the future.

Here's a few things i'd like to mention....

santana to the mets: one more reason to hate the mets.

curt schilling needs to shut up and retire.

barry bonds is still the most damaging player in baseball history, but thank god we have a good white upstanding classy competitive media/fan-friendly legendary pitcher to focus the steroids scandal on now! (i'm being extremely sarcastic)

bud selig is an absolute disgrace and should be tarred and feathered.

the phils have brad lidge!!!

clemens did not seriously use steroids, but he probably did tiptoe the line with certain drugs and was definitely vocally theoreticizing with his CLOSE FRIENDS WITH WHOM THERE SHOULD BE ABSOLUTE CONFIDENTIALITY which led to the mistaken recollections of andy pettite. mcnamee is a liar. mitchell and waxman are snakes. don't even get me started. one more reason to hate the red sox. (almost as much as the mets)

college baseball starts this week!!!!! (our opening series is this weekend, wish me luck)

to be continued...

It's easy for you to accuse me of being defensive, because if I deny that I'm being defensive, then I'm being defensive.. right?

In any case, while I am now well aware that I set myself up for this, I'm confused as to how the fact that "this is a weight loss site" has anything to do with anything right now, or where you're getting the notion that I am looking for justification. Sounds like you think that just because I don't accept the first scolding as the final word, I have blinders on. And everyone's "valid reasons".. What are you referring to? Reasons for what? For quitting? My generation has had the evils of smoking drilled into us since we entered elementary school. No one said anything new in this entire thread.

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. Particularly at these newest posts by people now chastizing me for not dropping a few obligatory smileys and cheerfully thanking everyone for their input. Again, if you're wondering why I didn't gain anything from this thread, and if you're wondering what I expected cnjjeanmard, see my post #32.

I'm just looking for "any firm example or statistic showing that my particular smoking frequency merits completely quitting". Period.

If you want opinions, ask on a message board. If you want firm examples and statistics, do the research yourself. Sorry, but I don't understand why you post asking this question if you only want to hear opinions that agree with yours. OR why you think people are going to go out and do the work for you.

First of all, once again, thanks to everyone for all the responses.

As for feanor's charming comment: This entire website revolves around questions like mine. A site like this, and its message boards, are for a community of people to draw upon the knowledge and experience of each other, so that they don't have to do the research themselves.

And I'm confused as to where you decided I only wanted opinions that agreed with mine? Please remind me again what my opinion was?

Apparently no one has yet figured out what I'm asking. Here's some examples of what I was looking for: "Hi, I've smoked a cigar a week for the past 15 years. Here's how I feel." "Hi, I've read that this is what happens to people who smoke a cigar a week." "Hi, I'm a doctor and this is what you can expect if you maintain this rate of smoking."

Instead, I've gotten people comparing smoking to riding motorcycles without helmets, people telling me all of the horrific ways in which I might someday die of cancer, people discussing the value of life, and people repeatedly telling me that smoking is bad. (Really?) And my personal favorite: you. Telling me that I shouldn't even be asking this question since all I deserve are opinions.

Every time someone asks for tips on gaining weight, my opinion is that the answer is pretty simple: eat more and lift. But if they challenged me to give them more specific examples/tips/suggestions/methods than that, would I tell them to stop posting? Of course not. But you apparently would.

So for everyone else out there: I get it. Smoking is bad. Thank you, this thread no longer needs to be continued.

Trust me, ask any smoker if they ever thought that when they started if they would be addicted one day and they will tell you no.  Ask any smoker if they like to smoke, and want to continue to smoke, and they will tell you no.  Everyone starts with just a few, and the body rebels...think about it, didn't the first one make you sick?  It was your body's way of telling you that you are putting poison in it!  I am a smoker who did not start until I was 21, and at 38, have tried to quit several times.  If I could go back in time...

There is saying, that is so true..."one cigarette is too many, and 1,000 is not enough"

I know you are talking about cigars, but it is the same premise.  The fact that you are even asking the questions shows that you know what you are doing is not good for you.  Stop while you can, and good luck!

Ok while I greatly appreciate all the responses so far, I have a few of my own, particularly regarding this post.

I have asked your addiction question of several people who have smoked cigars for years, and they all actually said yes. Everyone today knows that if they continue smoking, they will become eventually become addicted to some degree.

All of these same people also said they still enjoyed smoking cigars. Hence.... they still smoke cigars. I didn't ask cigarette smokers. I will never touch cigarettes. Due to the risk of sounding elitist, I won't get into why. But one thing I will mention is that the culture of cigars is not terribly conducive to smoking multiple times a day. Many sources I've found online, such as one supplied by santonacci, say that occasional cigar smokers are at a much lower risk than daily cigarette smokers.

And no, the first time I smoked, I didn't get sick, I got very buzzed.

I probably sound like the close-minded teen scoffing at the advice of those who obviously have more experience, but I have thoroughly thought this through and have yet to see any firm example or statistic showing that my particular smoking frequency merits completely quitting. So far, it actually sounds like my incredibly typical college drinking habit is more detrimental to my health.

I just searched the internet for some information, and received a pretty mixed group of answers, much like this thread has supplied. Of course the bottom line I keep reading is that the best thing to do is to not smoke at all. But I certainly haven't gotten a unanimous position regarding the health issues of smoking a cigar 3-4 times per month.

I never have breathing difficulties.

hgielrehtaeh: are you saying that at my rate of smoking I could get cancer or hardened blood vessels?

i agree with those who say that after the michael vick incident, pro athletes should be especially careful to put on an animal-friendly image for the public. so martinez is an idiot. not to mention that i feel like cockfighting is wrong.

rmgarcia and stanbob are the only people so far to get what i was asking about a single action lol... anyways, in my opinion, the homerun stands as the greatest action in sports. it is the most sucessful rendition of the most difficult action in sports (hitting a baseball)

http://www.projectview.org/MathandBaseball/Mo stDifficultActinAllSports.htm

Hitting a baseball has been described as the single most difficult feat in sports.  And for good reason.  Imagine the quality of hand-eye coordination required to make contact with a little white sphere traveling at over 95 miles per hour, using a 2 ¾ inch wide piece of wood being swung at over sixty miles per hour.  Consider the intense concentration.  A batter standing just 56 feet from the pitcher's hand has only about 45/100's of a second to decide if he'll swing, predict where the ball will be, instruct his muscles to move, and bring the bat to a point of impact.  If all goes well, the bat and ball rendezvous a few inches in front of the plate.  The ball is crushed to half its diameter, springs back, and is launched on its return flight at speeds close to a hundred miles per hour.  Timing is essential.  The difference between a hit over second base and a foul near first or third is a swing mistimed by 0.01 second.  Baseball is the only sport where being a failure seven out of ten times is considered to be outstanding - only about a dozen players in each major league bat .300 annually.

vicereine: oh yes indeed. while the MLB regular season doesn't start for a couple more months, college baseball's opening games begin in February.

rmgarcia: hey at least ichiro's fun to watch. on the topic of losing, here's an interesting stat: the Phillies are the oldest, continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional sports. they are also the first professional team ever to reach 10,000 losses. lol they did it last summer. i love my phils.

jessikkaa_x3: yogi berra. interesting that u would choose a question involving a yankee lol.

and by the way, ur not allowed to ever mention the sport of soccer in this thread. :P

steroids steroids steroids.. u know what, on second thought, i really do not wanna talk ab steroids right now lol. it depresses me. i'd need a specific question or i'd ramble on for days.

rather, here's a question for anyone: in your opinion, what single action in all of sports most epitomizes raw power in its magnitude, awe-factor, and athletic/skill requirements? what single action makes you just stop, watch, and be like... "Damn."

You should ask around elsewhere for other people's opinions on this too, but I would say around 1,000 calories per day is a very good surplus. It can be difficult to eat that much food depending on how much you think you're burning each day, so just try it for a few days and see how you feel. Anything more than 2,000 calories over is probably going to be counterproductive. Regardless of how much you work out, there's a limit to how quickly your body can convert everything into muscle weight.

Again, that's just what I've gathered so far, other people might suggest something different.

I guess I should have been more specific.  Male, ice hockey, not currently playing.  I also had 2 specific questions: how big (calorie-wise) is a good breakfast for workout days and for off-days, and how many calories should i be taking in after working out for like 40 minutes at the gym?  Thanks.

Your breakfast, in my opinion, should be about a fifth of your day's total calorie intake. So for me, I'll get in a bagel w/ cream cheese, bowl of cereal w/ whole milk, glass of orange juice, a banana, and bacon/ham/sausage/etc. for about 1,000 calories.

I don't really worry about what I specifically eat before a workout as long as I have enough in me (i'm weird: i like to feel kinda full when i lift/run). And right after I can't eat a lot of food so I don't worry about calories. Instead I throw back a Gatorade and a protein shake (EAS Myoplex is good). The shakes are important to get into your system soon after a lift to help the flush-and-build cycle get going. Then within a couple hours I'm starving and try to get in my biggest meal.

Well I think I found the right thread.  I'm trying to gain for college hockey, but I'm unfamiliar with gaining weight, and of course every site/store/product out there is geared toward obese Americans, so it's kind of hard to figure out what exactly I should be doing.  I'm hitting the gym four times a week, but doing very little cardio, but diet-wise I'm not exactly sure what to do.  I've been told to just eat as much as possible, but I've also heard that gaining too fast will result in fat...any advice?

..guy/girl? ice/field? are u in college right now? are you in-season?

A few pointers I've gathered so far from this site and experience: - Spread your calorie intake throughout the day (3-4 evenly spaced big meals, and snacks); - Eat lots, vary your foods, but eat healthy (avoid fast food, lots of grease, lots of alcohol, candy, soda, bad stuff in general); - Try to set a calorie surplus goal (I try to eat 1-2k calories more than I burn, each day); - Take shakes right after lifting to get the most out of them (I'm getting a GNC weight gain shake loaded with calories in addition to the usual EAS protein shake I take after workouts). And don't expect to safely put on more than 2-3 lbs. per week.

yea i feel like im in the only person in the world like this.. but i need to eat a lot before i run or lift. if i don't, my stomach hurts and all i can think ab while im running/lifting is how hungry i am.. weird. i never throw up or anything no matter how much i eat right before exercise. but i'd take a shake like that afterwards for the whole reload purpose.

and the banned substances are all these random really long complicated names that apparently would turn me into josh beckett if i accidentally had like 2 mg in a protein shake....

and good luck with soccer!
