Foods Good, lean sources of calcium? Jan 23 2008

try unsweetened almond milk (Almond Breeze).  it's got a good amount of calcium, only 40 cals per cup.  great in smoothies, or whatever.

either way, i'm sure it's somewhere w/in the average of it, and that would be at least 500 if not 600 per hour.  i'm not gonna worry about how exact as long as i know it's at least 500 cals.

Joanne, just work your way up to 10, it'll be a piece of cake. =)

i'm wondering the same thing and i've heard their inflated too.

when i do 60 mins on the elliptical, w/ the ramp at level 10 and resistance changing from levels 6-13, it says i've burned ~600 cals.

when i was in high school and didn't want my parents knowing that i was exercising (don't know why, didn't want the embarassing encouragement, i guess), i would sneak out the front door and walk for 30-60 mins.  maybe leave a note in your room so they don't freak.

I've been doing Taebo for several years now, i think it's probably my favorite...Get Ripped, BootCamp, Circuit-something-or-other.  Also do Slim in 6 (w/ Debbie-something, i think it's got "Burn" in the title).  Get Ripped w/ Jeri Love.  The Firm (w/ some chick that has a crazy southern accent).  All those have held my interest.  really hated this 20 pilates DVD someone gave me - i understand the concept, but if i'm gonna devote 20 mins to exercise, i want to work up a sweat!  Same w/ yoga.

i could suggest getting NetFlix and ordering all kinds of them, burning (shhhh!) the ones you like.  that's how i've gotten a lot of mine.

Very easy one.  i tried dipping the fish in egg/milk first once, the crust just slid off, so don't!

1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
4 boneless rainbow trout fillets (or Tilapia)
4 lemon wedges

Spread cheese in a flat-botomed dish large enough to hold a trout fillet.  Dredge each fillet, flesh side down, in the cheese.  Arrange the fillets, flesh side up on a clean dry work surface and coat with additional cheese.  Heat a heavy nonstick skillet sprayed lightly with nonstick cooking spray over medium-high heat.  Arrange the fillets, flesh side down and not touching, in the hot skillet, cook for 3 minutes.  Turn the fillets once; cook for 2 minutes longer.  Serve hot with lemon wedges.  Accompany fish with a green vegetable, rice, or potatoes.

this recipe is a favorite.

Red Snapper,Veracruz Style

1 28-ounce can diced tomatoes in juice, well drained, juices reserved
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup finely chopped white onion
3 large garlic cloves, chopped
3 small bay leaves
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano
1/4 cup chopped pitted green olives
2 tablespoons raisins
2 tablespoons drained capers
6 4- to 5-ounce red snapper fillets
3 pickled jalapeño chiles, halved lengthwise

Place drained tomatoes in medium bowl. Using potato masher, crush tomatoes to coarse puree. Drain again, reserving juices.

Heat oil in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and stir 30 seconds. Add garlic and stir 30 seconds. Add tomato puree and cook 1 minute. Add bay leaves, parsley, oregano, and 1/4 cup reserved tomato juices. Simmer until sauce thickens, about 3 minutes. Add olives, raisins, capers, and all remaining reserved tomato juices. Simmer until sauce thickens again, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)

Preheat oven to 425°F. Spread 3 tablespoons sauce in bottom of 15x10x2-inch glass baking dish. Arrange fish atop sauce. Sprinkle fish lightly with salt and pepper. Spoon remaining sauce over. Bake uncovered until fish is just opaque in center, about 18 minutes. Using long spatula, transfer fish with sauce to plates. Garnish with pickled jalapeño halves.

Makes 6 servings.

Foods Smart choices for pizza? Jul 31 2007

i agree w/ the south beach suggestion.  the crust is kind of sweet in a weird way, but overall they're good.  i like the chicken/vegetable one.  also, the Ultra Lean Pockets pizza flavor isn't too bad.  200 cal, 20-something grams of protein.  i'll warn you, there's a lot of empty space in that damn pocket, but it'll satisfy a pizza fix (and you could probably stuff extra stuff in the pocket...fat free cheese? veggies?)

i've been sampling different bars for the last 6 months or so, mainly for breakfast-replacement, rather than snacks.  my main requirements were at least 15 grams of protein, or i didn't want to waste the calories on it (hence, i ruled out Luna bars).  my favorite, due to the variety, is Zone bars (15 g protein, ~200 cals).  any chocolate ones (esp. coconut, raisin, peanut butter) are tasty.  i also like the South Beach meal replacement bars - 19 g of protein, ~200 cals.   they tend to be the bigger ones, have a rough Rice Krispie treat texture.  The peanut butter/chocolate is a favorite, but the cinnamon creme is good cinnamon-roll-like option for a breakfast replacement.  most Balance bars sucked ass, but i DO like the Balance Gold Crunch (peanut butter, cookies&cream) and the Trail Mix version (those are awesome).  and the SlimFast High Protein Chocolate Granola bar is pretty tasty.  i did have a buy-1-get-1 free coupon for some Pure Protein bars, the Blueberry one was pretty good, they were just a little smaller and cost a bit more (coupon clinched it for me).  Clif bars had more calories and less protein than i wanted.  For snacks, the Pria 110 cal bars are good.  and South beach snack bars (140 cals, 7ish g protein).

my guess would be that the scrambled tend to have butter or cooking spray.  fairly negligible, but still not as low fat as plain water used for poaching.

spray a coffee mug w/ cooking spray.  crack a few egg whites or some egg beaters, season w/ S&P,  and microwave for 30-45 seconds (nuke it 15 more seconds if it's still runny).  you end up with super quick scrambled eggs that are round shaped, perfect for english muffins or mini bagels.  throw on a wedge of laughing cow light or a fat free single or a microwaved morningstar farm "sausage" patty.  screw egg mcmuffins!

my brother is a server there.  he avoids eating there if he's trying to watch his cals, because just about everything is "bad" for you.  but the menu does have...veggies burgers (supposed to be good).  grilled fish sandwich, w/o the sauce/dressing.  a salad (Sashimi Tuna Salad...mmmm....).  Seasonal Vegetable Plate + couscous.  Seared Tuna.  Side - black beans w/ brown rice.  and take some of whatever you order home w/ you.

Foods anyone eat frozen dinners? lean cuisine etc... Jul 07 2007

south beach pizzas ARE good, especially if you add your own stuff to them (fresh herbs, low-fat feta, etc).  on the other hand, the south beach frozen entrees i've tried SUCK.  i like that they usually have actual vegetables, but the protein part is so flavorless.   lean cuisines and smart ones are good, but it's hard to find any with a decent serving of vegetables.  really like Amy's frozen food too.
Foods Plantains - Green Ones! Jun 18 2007
21:29 (UTC)
if you're doing something sweet with them, you'd REALLY be better off letting them ripen for a few days or a week.  they are the sweetest when they are turning black.  one of my fave ways of preparing them was this:

MASHED PLANTAINS WITH LEEKS AND FRESH HERBS

This slightly sweet mash tastes great with roast pork or lamb.

7 cups water
1 cup low-salt chicken broth
4 unpeeled large semi-ripe (yellow-black) plantains, ends trimmed, each cut crosswise into thirds

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, divided
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 large leek (white and pale green parts only), finely chopped
2 tablespoons minced fresh thyme
1 tablespoon minced fresh Italian parsley

1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons chopped pecans

Bring 7 cups water and broth to boil in heavy large pot. Add plantains. Reduce heat to medium; cover and simmer until plantains are very tender and yellow-orange (some may begin to come out of peel), about 20 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 cup cooking liquid. Cool plantains 10 minutes. Remove peel using hands or small paring knife. Transfer plantains to large glass bowl. Add 1/2 cup of reserved cooking liquid and mash plantains until smooth, adding more liquid by tablespoonfuls to thin mixture, if desired. Set aside.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter with olive oil in medium nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add leek and sauté until tender but not browned, about 6 minutes. Stir in thyme and parsley. Add leek mixture to mashed plantains; stir to blend. (Can be made 1 hour ahead. Let stand at room temperature. Microwave on high until heated through before continuing.)

Mix sour cream and cumin into hot plantains. Season with salt and pepper. Cut 2 tablespoons butter into small cubes. Scatter butter and pecans over; serve.

Makes 6 servings.

i think DEFINITELY everyone's different, and you can't really gauge this topic on other ppl's perspectives.  maybe somewhat, but it's gonna be a bit different for you personally.  still, it's good to hear about the other possibilities.

i've been on Ortho Novum 1/35 for ten years (as i stated before), partly generic, partly...uh...whatever they call non-generic.  for the most parts, periods are REALLY light, except for the occasional "normal" one (i.e., actual cramps, bleeding for a couple days).  sometimes it skips.  otherwise, little spotting.  i THOUGHT maybe i had decreased libido.  but my doctor pointed out that i've been on it for a long time, yet the libido issue is only a couple years old.  perhaps it has to do with job/marriage/needing a vacation.

regardless, hubby and i never want children, so i love it, mainly cuz periods are so bearable.

when i went on the pill (10 years ago - yikes!) they told me that when going on it, 1/3 of ppl gain weight, 1/3 of ppl lose weight, and 1/3 of ppl stay the same.  i didn't gain any weight from it.  in fact, 10 years ago, i was 60 pounds heavier.  (but the loss had nothing to do w/ the pill, just diet and exercise).
